Illustrator :: Blending Between Objects With Effects?

Jan 14, 2013

Applying an effect, such as a blur, to a blend seems to disable the "Smooth Color" option.  I can use "Specified Steps" or "Specified Distance" to correct the look of the blend, but I am just curious as to why this happens with "Smooth Color."

Illustrator :: Improve 3D Effects When Blending With Many Steps?

Feb 27, 2014

I am recently having a lot of fun after I discovered the power of blending. So here is my "protocol": I create two similar shapes, I make sure that they have a colored stroke, I use the blender, then I modify the path with the pencil, and I get this kind of results

I am quite happy with this, because of the fake 3D effect that it generates. I kind of understand that the "3D- shading" effect comes from the stroke color. However, this method has its limitations because:

- it only works with a stroke

- it gives different aspects depending of the number of steps.

Is there any way to smooth the effect created by the strokes to avoid the segmentation seen of the picture above?

Ideally, the best tool would be some kind of "extrude+blend on free path" tool, but it doesn't seem to exist in Illustrator yet...

Illustrator :: CS5 - How To Stop Selection Tool From Selecting Effects Around Objects

Jun 20, 2012

If I have a number of shapes on top of each other, with, for example, a drop shadow on the top shape, whenever I try and select the shape below it (it is peeking out from beneath the top shape, so I click on this 'peeking' section of the shape to try and select it) I cannot - it just selects the top shape as the top shape's drop shadow is 'blocking' the shape below it. Make sense?

How do I go about about remedying this? I seem to recall being able to tell Illustrator to ignore 'effects' when making selections in CS4, but cannot work out how to do this in CS5. And is there a way to refine the 'sensitivity' or selection radius when clicking to make selections?

Illustrator :: Transparent Bits With Effects And Underlying Objects / Strokes

Jan 25, 2013

In the image above, the blue needs to be transparent. BUT the white strokes, white space around the example top left image,  and the drop shadow effects all still want to be there. (i.e. the blue areas should `punch through` everything to transparency). Whilst keeping the drop shadows rendered in these areas which will darken parts of the transparent areas. Make sense?

The purpose is to export the image as a .png with transparency where the colour should be, which is used in a seperate application which sets a background colour behind the .png image - this allows real time changing of the image colours to whatever we need rather than being stuck with the colour in the image

Attempts with the above though usually end up with me loosing the effects, or they dilute and look different when the blue is removed, or things don't layer up propperly.

Photoshop :: Blending Options, Fx, Effects, Copy, CS4

Jun 16, 2009

In PS CS4 In my layers palette, I used to be able to have an effect (ex. drop shadow) on a layer & drag that effect onto another layer so the layers would have the exact same effect. In CS4 when I drag an effect, I lose that effect from that layer & it is put on the layer I dragged it to only. It will not let me copy it anymore. Is there some key I should be holding down now? I am wondering what else I will be running into with CS4. Maybe that wizard will pop out & yell at me.

After Effects :: Blending Mode (Multiply) Not Working?

Apr 3, 2013

I am working with CS6. I am attempting to add shadow to my text, which is a simple enough process. However, it doesn't appear as though my blending modes are working. Putting it on as a Multiply doesn't do anything to the solid shadow catcher. I have seen in the forum that some have had luck by changing the solid color, but this does not work for me.

Illustrator :: Lines Appear At Each Blending Step

Oct 5, 2012

I am having issues with the 3D Extrude & Bevel Effect.  Lines appear at each blending step, and there are missing sections that move around the graphic based on rotation. I did reduce the blending steps to keep them small enough for everyone to quickly view them, but the problem happens regardless.  The outline view is below to show the actual build of the vectors.

I uploaded the files so they could be viewed as a PDF, which is how I prefer to export my images; please follow the links. uRL....

Illustrator :: No Blending Options In Layers

I recently upped my opinion of Illustrator and was really impressed with how I could change the appearance in the layers panel.

Now unable to find it. Using a mac and CS5.5 when selecting drop down button it is not there any more. Layer options only gives silly basic options like the name of the layer etc. I just don't know what's happened.

Created a brushed metal effect and unable to save as graphic style. This layers blending options was excellent and I can't really use much of the program without it.

Illustrator :: Blending Colors Of Multiple Strokes

Feb 27, 2013

I would like to know, whether is it possible to make soft blends between all objects of the person in the art I am creating. The problem is, that I want to make very smooth transition between all paths(brush strokes) in the file. I tried the blend tool, but it didn´t work good for this purose. Then I tried to blur or feather all objects, but the result wasn´t good as well. Opacity masks would be too complicated for all those strokes. Is it possible to make this work for all brush paths in the file?

I have read that the 3d import is no longer available from CS6 onwards so I have downloaded Cinema 4D lite plugin for affer effects. I have managed to get the photoshop 3d object into Cinema 4d as I would expect but now I am struggling to find a way to export that object and import it into After Effects?

Illustrator :: Blending Stroked Paths From Big To Small In Both Directions

May 17, 2013

I want to blend two similar paths. Both paths have dashed lines as strokes, and both dashed lines go from big to small dot, in decreasing direction. I want to blend both paths, so the blend goes from big to small, in BOTH directions. The ideal ending image would show the biggest dot at the top left corner, and the smallest, at the down right corner (the final project involves two spirals, but for the sake of simplicity, I attach two straight lines).

I try to blend them, and the blend only goes in one direction, as seen in the attached samples (in the sample, it goes from top to bottom, but it doesn't go from left to right). It seems that Illustrator takes only the first dot size, and applies it as if all the path has the same dot size.

Illustrator :: Blending Complex Shapes - Location In Middle Of Path

Aug 28, 2013

I'm trying to blend 2 complex shapes together to give a 3D appearance but I keep having issues with the edges that choose to blend together. The image below shows what I want it to look like (small square on the left, smooth color blend) and what the shape looks like (shape on the right). The paths have the same number of anchor points and the white shape on top is an expanded offset version of the green shape on the bottom. The purple lines show what anchor points should be blending together.

For some reason it is blending to a location somewhere in the middle of the path and not to the corners. I have gone over the two paths and made sure that there are no points that shouldn't be there, as i know that can cause issues with blending.

3ds Max :: Composite 3D Objects / Effects Into Scene (Video)

Mar 16, 2011

I'm starting to get into video compositing a bit and I was wondering what your opinions are on the best program to use - 3ds Max or After Effects? Basically I'm shooting some live footage, solving for the camera motion in PFTrack, and I want to composite 3D objects/effects into my scene. Of course all of my modeling and animating will have to be done in Max, but which is the better program to use for actually Compositing it all together? Is it better to import the camera track into Max, set up the whole scene with lighting and cameras and everything, set the environment background as the original footage, and render it all in one shot? Or is it better to just render the models as an image sequence in Max (with alpha channel) and actually put the layers together in After Effects?

So far I've done a few test shots in 3ds Max alone, but it seems like most people prefer to composite in After Effects. What are the advantages/ disadvantages to each? It would be great to hear from people who have actually done this before.
