After Effects :: Setting Blending On A 3D Layer
Sep 4, 2013I want to set the blending mode on a 3D layer so that I remove the layer but keep the shadows. How do I do this?

Photoshop :: Make A Layer Selection Include Its Blending Effects?
Sep 1, 2013For creating masks I'll often select all visible pixels in a layer (cmd+click the layer) but if the layer has any blending effects, e.g. a stroke or drop shadow, then this won't be included in the selection. Is it possible to include these in the selection?

When I assign a multiply blending mode for example it takes the white background out of one of my images. When I place the image in indesign the blending mode is no longer applied and the white background is on the image.

Jan 14, 2013Applying an effect, such as a blur, to a blend seems to disable the "Smooth Color" option. I can use "Specified Steps" or "Specified Distance" to correct the look of the blend, but I am just curious as to why this happens with "Smooth Color."

Jun 16, 2009In PS CS4 In my layers palette, I used to be able to have an effect (ex. drop shadow) on a layer & drag that effect onto another layer so the layers would have the exact same effect. In CS4 when I drag an effect, I lose that effect from that layer & it is put on the layer I dragged it to only. It will not let me copy it anymore. Is there some key I should be holding down now? I am wondering what else I will be running into with CS4. Maybe that wizard will pop out & yell at me.

Feb 27, 2014I am recently having a lot of fun after I discovered the power of blending. So here is my "protocol": I create two similar shapes, I make sure that they have a colored stroke, I use the blender, then I modify the path with the pencil, and I get this kind of results

I am quite happy with this, because of the fake 3D effect that it generates. I kind of understand that the "3D- shading" effect comes from the stroke color. However, this method has its limitations because:
- it only works with a stroke
- it gives different aspects depending of the number of steps.

Is there any way to smooth the effect created by the strokes to avoid the segmentation seen of the picture above?

Ideally, the best tool would be some kind of "extrude+blend on free path" tool, but it doesn't seem to exist in Illustrator yet...
After Effects :: Blending Mode (Multiply) Not Working?
Apr 3, 2013I am working with CS6. I am attempting to add shadow to my text, which is a simple enough process. However, it doesn't appear as though my blending modes are working. Putting it on as a Multiply doesn't do anything to the solid shadow catcher. I have seen in the forum that some have had luck by changing the solid color, but this does not work for me.

Apr 3, 2012I have used Photoshop for years, but never in the capacity. I'm trying to blend layers together and then have the ability to save the top layer with the effects as its own layer. I'm sure that is not too clear so I have attached a screen shot.
Basically, have a B/W raster as a layer. Then I placed a smart object from Adobe Illustrator (a bunch of line vectors) on top of the raster. I then used my layers panel with a Screen option and I get the effect that I want. Where the line crosses a light area on the background it becomes light, and where it crosses a dark area it becomes dark (See Screenshot). Now what I want to be able to do is save my line layer as PSD document and not have the background layer on there.
If I flatten the layers, I obviously get the background layer. If I turn off the background layer, then I loose my screen effect.
This may be an easy fix, or impossible. I'm not sure.
Photoshop :: Multiple Layer Blending
Sep 11, 2006I have 5 images [in PSCS2] I want to subtly blend. I dont have the skills [yet] to get it right. I know how to make a layer mask, the eraser, how to use the lasso with feathering etc but I just cant get it right. What i want is to have one image dissolve [progressive transparency] into the next, not just a bland erasing of the sections, which is all i seem to be able to do.
I've attached 2 frames - one with the original images unprocessed and my attempt at merging in frame 2. I'm nothappy with it. I want some of the images to be moved closer together and have much more partial transparency smoothly merging these images....

Specifically, I refer to Figure 5.29(a) where the re-coloured cat does not appear to sit naturally on the person's shoulder (cf Figure 5.26(a)). How can the defect be overcome? But would the bucket fill also be feathered?

GIMP :: Layer Mask Feathering / Blending
Nov 6, 2012I have a picture of a black dog which I want to merge into a black background as seamlessly as possible. I created a layer mask and blacked out the photograph area behind the dog so that the black of the layer beneath shows through. What I want to do now is somehow feather the edge between the dog and the black background to melt the two together rather than having a sharp crisp edge. Can I somehow feather the edge of my layer mask to do this quickly and easily or do I have to do it manually using the smudge tool etc?

Jun 7, 2012I have found that when I use the Layer Styles on one layer and then make a new layer or select a shape that creates a new layer that when I go to add Styles to the new layer/new shape the previous layer is affected by how I set the Bevel & Emboss, Direction, Altitude, Drop Shadow etc etc.

BG > New Layer > draw an ellipse and then add a Bevel with an > Angle of 89 and an Altitude of 30 and then I add a New Layer > open the Styles and go to change the Angle to say +89 or whatever and the Altitude to say 45 ... the first Layer/Shape Effects change.

I have found that if I Rasterize a Layer Effect that I can add a "double" effect on the same layer but I haven't tried the to do this with separate layers. However, for most of the work I am doing I cannot use the Raster because everything needs to be true vectors.

Feb 8, 2007For some reason, even though the preview button is checked my blending options for one file aren't showing the changes to my image as I make them. In addition, when I exit the blending options screen, the options I've chosen are automatically greyed out--not visible.
It's only doing this on 1 file.

I am designing a website and when I apply a drop shadow or inner shadow to a layer through layer style/blending options in the layers tab. It applys the same angle etc.. to all the other layers I have done styles too...

I will have 5 + layers done with styles and I will make a new layer and give it a shape, open up blending options and when I do a drop shadow and change the angle I literally can see everything on my layout change angles also when I move it around for just ONE layers style... What on earth is going on? This makes it impossible to make unique designs unless I keep flattening my PSD and transfering stuff over which destroys workflow.

Jul 26, 2007I am trying to create sort of a rounded box, except with one corner only. I am quite new to photoshop and am running into trouble creating the top left corner, (the only corner I want to show). I have created the background set as transparent, then used the rounded rectangle to create a round corner, then created another layer and another rounded rectangle over the first one, so now I have a thin line, with a rounded corner.
The problem is, the middle section is still white, so I have to manually use the eraser tool to erase that layer to get the transparent background to show through instead of the white background.
I am sure there is a better way to do this. How can I set an entire layer to be transparent ?

Aug 19, 2013I'm using PS CS4 and I've been using actions for years now. However, about a year or two ago they started acting oddly. All my custom actions follow a similar flow: open file, size file, make transparent, add layer style, export to PNG, and, finally, close the file.

Once upon a time, the last time I recall it working flawlessly was in CS 2, I had to do nothing other than start the action on a directory of files. Now I have to click OK when the Layer Styles window pops up. Here is the exported action file. After clicking on a directory that may contain up to a 1,000 files; it gets tiresome and finger sore.
