GIMP :: Layer Mask Feathering / Blending
Nov 6, 2012
I have a picture of a black dog which I want to merge into a black background as seamlessly as possible. I created a layer mask and blacked out the photograph area behind the dog so that the black of the layer beneath shows through. What I want to do now is somehow feather the edge between the dog and the black background to melt the two together rather than having a sharp crisp edge. Can I somehow feather the edge of my layer mask to do this quickly and easily or do I have to do it manually using the smudge tool etc?

In the section "5.8 Practical Uses of Blending Modes" of the book "Grokking the GIMP" (see, e.g.,URL.... there is an example of how to use blending modes to alter the colour of a cat.
Specifically, I refer to Figure 5.29(a) where the re-coloured cat does not appear to sit naturally on the person's shoulder (cf Figure 5.26(a)). How can the defect be overcome? But would the bucket fill also be feathered?

I was looking at a Photoshop tutorial, it's for building a galaxy and mostly works for gimp, but there was a mention of "layer blending mode to colour." I was wondering what the equivalent is in gimp, or even if there is one.

Long time gimp user, but for basic tasks only. Now I would like to get my hands dirty a little more. I'm trying to setup a workflow that involves CAD, Inkscape and GIMP. Basically I did some architectural drawing in CAD, used Inkscape to clean up and convert DXG into SVG, so that I can use paths into GIMP. I did a script that for every path creates a new transparent layer with a layer mask using the path, so I can add fills and textures quickly. Now to the problem: say I want to add a texture from another image, i paste the image into the appropriate layer, then I want to transform the texture a bit (scale, rotate and perspective). the result is that the layer mask is transformed, too. I tried to disable the mask during transform, but didn't work.
Is there a way to workaround this? maybe some layer mode instead of layer mask?

How would you take a layer mask, and make it its own layer? If you try copying and pasting a layer mask, you can only dock it to another layer.

I am trying to add a grey scale mask to a layer so I can alter some game files .But I must be missing something blindingly obvious. Here is how I create a mask in PSP6.
-First I duplicate the base layer.
-Then I adjust the saturation to -100%(grey). Then I adjust the lightness to +100%..This gives a grey scale image.
-I then increase the brightness by 25% and the contrast by 50%. This gives a grainy bright and high contrast grey scale image.
-I then create a mask and then add the mask to a blank layer.
This allows me to spray away to my hearts content and leaves the main detail on the original image untouched. By this method I can add mud effects to tank tracks in games and still see the original link details through the mud.
But I am having major issues trying to achieve this effect in gimp.At the moment this hurdle is stopping me getting to grips with gimp.

I've had gimp for quite awhile now and ive never come across this problem before. im trying to use the layer mask with greyscale and inverted image just as i always have. but when i go to edit my color i get grey! ive always been able to change colors this way! i know that the mode is set to rgb. im on the correct layer. ive closed it. ive restarted my laptop.
If i click on the transparency part i get a big blob of color as i should. but on the mask it does what its supposed to but in shades of grey. i dont understand whats wrong! it always worked perfectly. . .

Only thing that i have changed is i have a new tablet but i still have the problem without the tablet

I am trying to develop an animated GIF to use as a web-ad, I have readthe docs and googled but still having problems :-(
The ad (portrait format) is very simple: a background logo at thebottom of the ad, and three different text messages which rotate. Ithus created a bottom layer with the logo covering the bottom third; asecond layer with nothing but the first text message on the upper2/3rds, another layer with the second text message also in the upper2/3rds and finally a layer with the third text message in the upper2/3rds. While the logo at the bottom should be displayed at all timesthe three different text messages are shown one at a time.
After reading the docs I then expanded each layer with a text messageto be as large as the ad itself. My next step was to try to create alayer mask - for each of the three layers with the text messages, saidlayer mask to cover only the lower 1/3 where it would be transparent.
This is where I ran into problems, no matter what I tried, I could notaccomplish this. There must be something very basic I have yet tounderstand!
Last, in order to create the animated GIF, I exported all four layersusing "replace" in the dialog box. I also experimented with "combine"to no avail. No matter what I tried, I either ended up with an animatedGIF where the logo and the three different text messages over timebecame overlaid, or, an animated GIF where only one thing was shown atone time.
What have I missed?

I have 2 layers and I want to mask one through the other. I've attached a png showing what I want. I tried to attach an .xcf file, but it won't do it, which seems strange for a gimp forum. Anyway, one layer is the text (black outline) and one layer is a colorful background. In the xcf, the background layer is entirely filled with the colorful stuff, but I want it to only show through the interior of the letters (as shown in the png).

I have been using Gimp for awhile (love it!) and have always used layer masks with no problems. But for some reason when I create a layer mask by filling in an area with black it isn't 100% opacity. Everything seems to show 100% opacity, but I can see the layers underneath (the mask is maybe at 90%??). If I "show layer mask" it is black where it should be and white where it should be, it doesn't look transparent. All my layers are set to "normal" mode. I'm at a lost as to what setting I must have changed?

When you try to rescale a layer using the Rescale Tool with a layer mask active, it scales of the mask, likewise if you select the layer it will scale the layer. Can I select both the layer and layer mask and scale the layer, thus it keeps the layer mask showing the desired masked area only. As the only way I can see currently is by applying the layer mask on the layer and then you can see the layer/s below to get the scaling that is desired. But I would like to keep the layer mask active for editing after scaling.

I'm trying to create 1 pixel wide borders for some web buttons. I've tried to use the GIMP path tool to do this but I can't figure out how to get it looking right. See attached image.
1 - copied from a button I found on a web-page. This is what I want - single pixel horizontal and vertical lines with feathering on the curved bits.
2 - path that I used to generate the images on the right.
3 - 'Stroke Path' with 1px brush size & no antialiasing. Corners are not smooth.
4 - 'Stroke Path' with 1px brush size & anti-aliasing. Straight lines are too fuzzy as they are 2 pixel wide rather than 1.
Is there a way to do this with the path tool or any other way with the GIMP?

I have some round PNG icons where the pixels are either fully opaque or fully transparent. They look fine on a white background but are no use on a dark background.
E.g. see the orange icon attached. Ideally, the edge of the round icon would be semi-transparent orange so that it would merge nicely into either a light or dark background.
So, is there any tool in the GIMP that can correct the feathering? I.e. subtract the white from the pixels to leave a semi-transparent orange.
I.e. convert...
pure-white -> fully-transparent
light-orange -> semi-transparent fully saturated orange
fully saturated orange -> leave unchanged  Â

I have some white text which spans over white and red backgrounds. Where the text is over the white (white on white) I would like it to show as black(or dark colour) but to remain as white over the red background. I have been playing with blending modes to get this to work but the closest I get is with diiference mode but the text over the red turns green.

Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?
Â
And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?
Â
I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.
Â
So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.
Â
I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)
Â
However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??
Â
So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.
Â
I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.
Â
I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it because I am not getting behind the Mask?

In CS6 I created a clipping mask with an image above a type layer, and when I lower the opacity of the image layer, it starts turning the color of the text green? Why is this?
Â
1. How could I lower the opacity of the image inside the text?
Â
2. The same thing happens when I try to change the blending of the clipping mask with the text layer beneath it. Why is turning green?

My subject line pretty much sums up what I want to ask.
The thing is I've learned how to do both of them, but every textbook exercise I've done regarding one I found out that I can pull off with the other too.
Are they simply two different mechanisms for doing the same thing?

I'm having trouble getting the edges of my eyes to look like they are part of the chair, which got me wondering. Is there a way to feather my edges with increased intensity closer to the edge? To be specific, I'd like to start the feather 100px inside the border with 60% opacity, all the way to the edge (border) with 0% opacity. I tried doing this manually a couple of ways and it just didn't look uniform.
I have also tried with the eyes seperated (without the middle area), but I still have the same issues.

(CS3) I have a raster layer that has some semi-transparent pixels.
I'd like to make the layer itself fully opaque, and move the contents of its alpha channel into a layer mask.
(If possible, merging the alpha channel with what I have already placed into the layer mask.)

Is there a difference between selecting your layer and clicking Add Layer Mask Icon versus having that layer selected, hold down ctrl and select Add Layer Mask Icon?
Also regarding working in Lightroom, if I modify a jpeg, select another image from filmstrip to work on and then go back to the first image for more work, are those actions degrading image even though I never physically save and close.

I have used Photoshop for years, but never in the capacity. I'm trying to blend layers together and then have the ability to save the top layer with the effects as its own layer. I'm sure that is not too clear so I have attached a screen shot.
Basically, have a B/W raster as a layer. Then I placed a smart object from Adobe Illustrator (a bunch of line vectors) on top of the raster. I then used my layers panel with a Screen option and I get the effect that I want. Where the line crosses a light area on the background it becomes light, and where it crosses a dark area it becomes dark (See Screenshot). Now what I want to be able to do is save my line layer as PSD document and not have the background layer on there.
If I flatten the layers, I obviously get the background layer. If I turn off the background layer, then I loose my screen effect.
This may be an easy fix, or impossible. I'm not sure.

I have 5 images [in PSCS2] I want to subtly blend. I dont have the skills [yet] to get it right. I know how to make a layer mask, the eraser, how to use the lasso with feathering etc but I just cant get it right. What i want is to have one image dissolve [progressive transparency] into the next, not just a bland erasing of the sections, which is all i seem to be able to do.
I've attached 2 frames - one with the original images unprocessed and my attempt at merging in frame 2. I'm nothappy with it. I want some of the images to be moved closer together and have much more partial transparency smoothly merging these images....
