3ds Max Modeling :: Normals Are All Messed Up On Detached Object

I think I started noticing this problem in 2013, but not sure. It's definitely happening in 2014 still.Basically I import an obj file. It looks fine, but there are a few parts grouped together. I grab them by selecting element, and detach. Boom! Now the normals are all messed up on the detached object.
and the same thing happens often when attaching other objects. Sometimes the normals just get flipped completely around even.

Is it possible to create two normals per polygon, one for each side in 3dsm? I need to export a .obj with normals on both sides.
I know how to flip, unify and use the "2 sided" materials in 3dsm but thats not enough unfortunately.

can I snap an object/vertex/edge to another object straight in one axis?

Any way to control the rotation of the normals of splines or single segments?
I'm creating a 3d spline cage (like a box made with splines) and need to make it renderable with a rectangle profile.
the rectangle is pointing in different directions depending on which line inside the spline.

After you you click on view normals to see them in the viewport, is there a way to export that information in some sort of text format that tells you the exact angle of each normal on a mesh? I need this information for the average normal information.

I do need to display the correct surface side to varify if any surface normal is wrong sided. But all the time surfaces are displayed in the force 2-sided mode, although the setting is off. I use the Nitrous driver but tested it also on all other drivers whithout success. Older 3dmax versions doesn't have had this problem on the same machine. See the attachment where I added the renderer where the object is displayed correctly. How can I get the result within the viewport?

The Tool Options Palette which normally resides in one of the bars along the top of the screen in the Edit Mode becomes detached. Basically undocked and positions itself somewhere else.I can drag and move it around but I cannot reattach it. It appears like a separate tool bar or palette in that it has its own status or title line across the top with the X to close at the right edge.
It responds normally as to all of the tools on it which correspond to the specific tool selected. The palette floats on top of the screen so finding a place to put it where it will not intrude on the image or other pallets or tool bars is a challenge. When the palette becomes detached like this, the line where it had resided above the work area no longer exists.
I don't recall conducting any particular task or operation which caused this to happen. I just noticed that it was no longer in its place and was now floating in a spot on the right side of the screen.

I know the difference between attach and overlay for reference files.
The problem here is that the xref IS attacehd as an overlay and I am still not able to detach it.
I am working on WisDOT transportation plans. For those that are not familiar with these projects, certain reference files must plot black in some plan sections, but grey in others. When we submit the plans to the utility companies, all utilities must be black. but are grey in everyother submittal. I changed the xref level attributes to plot black with the intensions of detaching the xref and reattaching to revert back to the orignial grey level attributes. Is there anyway that changing the level attributes is somehow not letting the xref be detached?

I have a problem docking the windows. The tool options window somehow detached itself and I just can't figure out how to dock it again.
There are a couple of very light colored lines which are used for docking. I don't see any lines on the "Tool Options" window or any other window for that matter.

While working in a drawing, I noticed that my leaders looked a little odd. They had ALL lost their verticies and upon further investigation I realized that the mtext is no longer attached to the leader (i.e. when you select text and grab the grip and move, the leader, text end, does not follow). Start a new leader command, and all is well with the new leader and text but the old leaders remain disconnected.
This is a new file originated in 2013. Audit was 0. Restarted AutoCad, checked a bak file and auto-save, no changes to mleader settings or attachments. I do no recall executing any out of the ordinary commands or changing settings.

Our office recently moved all of our project files to the dropbox. Now when I open files with xrefs I have to attach them back into the file. However, this doesn't happen for my coworker. She can see all the xrefs. How could I solve this? The file names or directory has not changed.

how do i completely flatten an object to determine its true dimensions. I have a door for a car lets say is 1 meter ,yet with the complexity of the curves and angle of the panels on the door if it was to be made completely flat it would be say 1.4 meters. I want to achieve something like the iron man pic but for the door. I tried sticking it in Autocad and converted to 2D but the measurements where of.

I am trying to do a simple retopo modelling. In many other soft you only need to turn on snapping to get your retopo model vertexes/edges following a surface of a hi-res reference object.
Seems I can't do so in Max because it tend to snap to faces of the same object I am working on.
Is it possible somehow to snap to faces of other objects only so the currently edited object faces would be completely ignored/excluded/invisible for snapping?

I was creating a gun on 3DS and everything was fine, I started with an horizontal Cylinder but since I wasn't happy with the final result I wanted to restart.
Now when I create that Cylinder again it's created vertically, not horizontally, probably I pressed something that I didn't want to, I want every object to be created in an horizontally way, how can I do that?
PS: I don't want to use any modifiers and/or mirrors, I just want every object to be created horizontally!

I wanted to start learning how to use 3DSMax by first making a sword model that could later be used for a game like Skyrim. But rather than making some simplistic, blocky sword, I wanted to jump to something more complicated to speed up the learning curve.
I was editing existing models in Blender before, so I already know more or less how to operate a program like this, and everything else can be covered with tutorials. But there's one thing I can't find a tutorial for...
Let me explain it on an example. I want to make a model of this sword:

The idea is that it's symmetrical and identical on both sides. I saw somewhere a video where a guy was somehow creating a model, and while he was working on one half, the other half was automatically updating and creating a perfectly symmetrical shape.
For this sword, I would be basically making only 1/4 of the sword, while the rest would be appropriately placed mirrors. I want this process of mirroring to happen automatically. How do I do that?

I am trying to use conform, but when I pick the wrap to object, it inherits the material of the wrapper object. I am using active viewport and I am aligned directly over the object to be wrapped to. What am I doing wrong?

I just switched from max 2011 to 2012 yesterday. when i am poly modeling, pressing 1-5 changes the selection from vertex, face etc.. , but re-pressing the number key doesn't de-select the sub-object lvl, i have to click the icon to deselect all. Is there some option i'm missing?

Script to clone an object along a spline so that if i modify that spline vertices all the clones are repositioned automaticaly?
I use to apply a Path Constraint to initial object position and then i call Tools|Snapshot to clone it, but this works just for distribute the clones. The path is relationed just to original object, not to the clones...

Is there a way to select either vertices on a polygon or points on a curve and create an object at those points?
The snapping of objects to curve points isn't very accurate, so if possible, the above would greatly speed up my workflow.
