3ds Max Modeling :: Edge Is Locked On Axis

Using 2010. I'm trying to move an edge on the Z axis, but for some reason it refuses to go that way--nothing happens when I try dragging it down, and dragging it up causes it to go forward on the Y axis. This happened when I pressed something wrong on my keyboard I think. Resetting, restarting the program, etc doesn't work.
A few questions:
- How do I fix this?
- How did this even happen? When I Google ways to lock vertices/edges/etc, people are saying it can't be done.

can I snap an object/vertex/edge to another object straight in one axis?
I'm coming from Rhino 3d, where this is possible by holding the shift key.

I've been using maya since 8.5 and there's a notorius bug that will probably be never addressed by maya developers. I just upgraded to 2012 and am getting this again: // Warning: Could not find an appropriate startup camera: side. A substitute will be used.
And i took all the preventive actions: window size and position are not saved with file, i always go back to four view before saving, etc. Still no joy.
In fact the side camera is not missing, it's right there and fully functional. What happens as a consequence of this error is that one of the rotation axes in perspective view are locked, i can't rotate my scene around the Y axis.
It doesn't work either if i export my object and import it back into a fresh scene. Axis remains locked. I'm losing my scenes that i've put insane amount of work into. No hope to restore them.

Struggling with an Educational version of 3ds Max 2013, and all of a sudden I can't seem to draw a vertical line (or shape) up the z axis in the perspective view -- I seem to be locked to the x/y plane and am loosing my mind...

Is it possible to lock some polygons in a object and when e.g. twist it a little bit? I'd like those polygons to keep their shape while rest polygons deforming.

I am trying to rotate 30 degrees along an axis.
In Rhino, it is simply using Rotate3D -> pick your axis of rotation -> type degrees -> enter
In Max, how do I pick an axis rather than world XYZ?

I'm trying to find a way to have an object's rotation axis match it's parent's. In Softimage, this can be done with Freeze Rotation Transform (or some similarly named command), and it will reorient the pivot axis to the parent's. Trying to find Maya equivalent.
It's not important that it match it's parents transform. If there is a way to have an object match any other object's rotation axis, yet maintain vertex positions in world space, that's just as good.

None of the axis point and direction is not showing. Perhaps I may have clicked some shortcut to turned it off or something?

I am currently following the getting started guide for Maya 2011 and I have come to a portion where it is required to use the Extrude tool to extend a part of the helmet.(page 100 : Polygonal Modeling / Lesson 1 / Extruding polygon components)
Everything is fine up to this instruction 5 Click the large circle that surrounds the manipulator to display the rotate manipulators and then drag the green circular manipulator to rotate the angle of the extrusion to match the angle in the reference sketch (see image) and then drag the arrow manipulator a second time to extrude a second section of mesh.
The actual problem: On my scene, when I click the circle that surrounds the manipulator, the 3 axis' rotate handles appear,but they disappear as soon as I release the mouse button (It is the same behavior if I move and if I do *not* move the mouse before releasing).

I have read that this feature was removed(??) in 2011. How to do it in 2012?
Use Axis Constraints is ON in the Grid and Snap Settings but when i hoover over the vertex the snap goes away and a small circle shows up. When i click the vertex and drag it the axis constraints are turned off. I use the vertex snap all the time.

Is it possible to automatically project the x-axis, z-axis or z-axis onto the sketch plane?
I.e. every time you open a new sketch the corresponding lateral and vertical axis will be projected onto the sketch.

The move handles can be selected independently but when the snaps toggle is on the selection is locked to the center box handle. Rotate and scale gizmos are uneffected.

Take a sphere, transform it in both location and rotation. Now you want to make it's new transform and rotation zeroed out so so that it still rotates around it's local axis but all its base values are zero. If you just freeze transforms, it puts everything to zero around the world axis not the local axis. This is not what I want. I want to be zeroed around the local axis.

I'm trying to get use to it.But I just have the problem that somehow the axis are all very small.
Like the axis when I want to move, rotate, scale,... sth.
And the size stays, no matter if I dolly, therefore it's sometimes difficult to click the right axis.

how do I scale a group of polygons in their local axis? I have seen people doing this fine in Maya.
I have attached an image that explain this clearly. It's a simple cylinder, extruded and when I scale the extruded polygons in local x axis, they get scaled in crazy different axes.

I'm running MAC OS X (10.6.8), PS CS5 extended (12.0.4 x64) and LR3 (3.6). I've opened a DNG file in LR and then opted to edit it as smart object in PS. I've then used the quick selection tool to select an area in the photo. When I then attempt to 'Refine Edge', I get a circle with a diagonal line indicating that the action is locked out.
I can make changes using an adjustment layer (but not to selection).

My rotate tool in maya seems to be "locked" i can't freely rotate whenever i left click hold the center and it only rotates where my viewport is looking at so if im at the X axis I can't rotate the Z axis. Tried setting my preferences to default and nothing. I've also set my rotate tool to default.
Whenever I move my camera say to the Z axis the Z handle gets selected and same when I move the camera to the X axis.

Is it possible to change the display size of the local rotation axis?
I'm trying to visually align the local rotation axis for joints with geometry that isn't always world axis aligned. I've searched on different forums as well as searches on "topeka" (google ), and I've come up with nothing so far.

When I try and move a corner of my open document with the hand tool to the center of the document window in CS5 when zoomed out, it stops at the edges and will not move inward any further. It is sometimes more convenient to be able to work on a zoomed in corner of a document when it is centered in the document window. If I go to the rotate tool and set a slight angle, I can then move the document anywhere in the window at any magnification! Is there a setting that is locking the document at the edge of the screen when zoomed out?

Is there a way to have multiple vertices selected at multiple positions (heights) in the z axis and enter a value of 0 and have all of them jump to 0 in the z axis? Seems like a no brainer to me, but can find a way to do it.

I am polymodeling and want to restrict a vertex to moving only along one of its corresponding edges. Seems like there was a drop down for this but I am totally missing it right now.

I cant solve this problem with edge selection tool, my task is to create an oil barrel and when I select the barrel with edge selection tool then press setting button next to connect there is that triangle pattern in between two lines that I don't want, how do I get rid of it?

Is there a way to bevel a edge like in the first screenshot with more than one segment without getting those marked n-gon faces shown in the second screenshot. i've been playing around with all the settings of the bevel tool but i always get those faces that i dont need and have to delete manually.

I have a minor problem with creating some polygons on the edge of the window - inner and outer side. As you can see here: I need to connect neighbouring vertex and I do not want to do it manually by creating polygons one by one. Isn´t there any modificator in max I could use to do that automatically??

i used to work a lot with polyboost and since the change from polyboost to graphite modeling tools, i built my own toolbars in max.to customize the interface, i found all the tools i needed in the polytools category.one big exception is even/odd selection presets (skip, nthselect / step), which i found an extremely useful edge-selection tool. i attach a screenshot of the polyboost tools rollout, where these settings could be found formerly. at the end of this message i also attach a dicription of these settings from the polyboost work. Where to find the command to launch this toolbox. or if this feature possibly was not included in the graphite modeling tools?

nth sel
selects the next even or odd numbered element in the model. because of the way the numbers are laid out in a basic primitive in max, this will in a way duplicate the selection further down the element numbers. the "STEP" spinner determines how big the jump is to the next selection. if the "reverse(rev)" checkbox is checked the selection will be created in the opposite way, and if the "move" checkbox is checked the selection will not be duplicated, but moved instead.

First when I try d extrude front faces they don't stick together, even though "keep faces together" is checked [URL]........
but I click on the little round icon in the middle before extruding and they kinda stay together . When I try to insert a edge loop, it dosnt loop, but looks something like this [URL]........and when I let go of mouse button it gives some strange edges [URL].......

i was wondering if there is a way to determine the direction of the edge extrude when you extrude an edge in an editable mesh.
so i have an edit mesh and i want to extrude an edge. imagine it's just a basic surface. i wish the edge would be extruded to be running exactly in the direction of the previous edge. hope that makes sense...
basically regardless of local/world/viewport mode and regardless of which viewport i am in the edge seems to be extruded in an arbitrary direction..
