3ds Max Animation :: Using Geometry As Atmospheric Gizmo For Volume Fog?

Sep 4, 2012

Is there a way to use geometry with mods (like ripples or waves for instance) as an atmospheric gizmo for volume fog?

I want to conform the shape of the gizmo to a animated geometry, instead of the rigid boxes and spheres.

I am making a rolling time line that moves left to right. As certain years come into view, the roll will pause and text will fade in. The only way I know to do this is to get into the object properties and adjust the visibility. Is that the best way to do this or could/should it be done in the material somewhere?

3ds Max Animation :: Breaking Of Geometry And Animating It?

Oct 16, 2012

Imagine a flat box or cube (20 x 20 x 2) with many subD's so that it look like more a 3D plane rather than a cube. Is it possible to "pinch" off a peice off a piece of geometry off of the cube corner by using a mod so that the pinched piece literally breaks away from the parent piece? It can stay as the same object or a new object piece can be created..it doesn't matter, as long as I can animate the pinched off peice separately.

3ds Max Animation :: Using Volume Select To Randomize Moving Objects?

Oct 25, 2012

Trying to figure out the best way to control the random movement of objects..

Imagine a row of 10 spheres, positioned right beside each other in one long orderly chain. I want to make these spheres move about randomly in space. A perfect way is to use a position and rotation noise controller on each one with a separate seed. Great no problem.

But I would like to animate the noise of the spheres as if I had a volume select over all of them together, so that all the spheres would not move and stay still until I animate or move the gizmo box of the volume select. So as the gizmo box leaves the sphere, the noise controllers would be activated.

I could place a soft selection to the volume select so that it would be a smooth transition between noise and calm.

Now I understand volume select only control vertices and noise controllers control the object in space so I dont think they would work with each other but IS there some other method that I am missing that I can use to achieve this result??

Maya Animation :: Constraining Curve Points To Geometry?

Apr 20, 2012

How can I make a curve's end points constrain to objects in order to create a "theta" angle line that changes dynamically when the angle between the two objects changes?

I thought they answer may have lay in creating the curve using Maya's new Bezier Curve tool, then using the Rivet plug-in from CreativeCrash to pin it to the middle of two poly cylinders (the "x" and "y" axis.) Unfortunately this doesn't work; the Script editor spits back "is not a vertex!". Either I'm not using Rivet correctly or the end points of a Bezier Curve in Maya are not the same as a CV Curve. But perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way entirely.. I ultimately would wish to extrude geometry about this curve to create a dynamically changing curved cylinder to visualize the angle. It seems like it should be a relatively simple thing to do...

3ds Max Animation :: Animate Cylinder Deforming Along A Path - Volume Select

Feb 22, 2012

Got a bit of a puzzle here, trying to animate a cylinder deforming along a path. Fairly standard stuff. Got the path deform fine, but now I need any of the vertices that enter this one area to be deleted. Volume select with a mesh object doesn't seem to work, as it will only select the vertices where the cylinder is before the path deform object. Is there any sort of work around/way to collapse the animation of the path deform? I know I could do snapshot if I only wanted one frame of it, but the cylinder moves along the path over 1500 frames.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Sample Line Volume Report And Surface Volume Give Different Quantities

Jun 18, 2012

I'm working with TIN surfaces, doing cut/fill comparisons for a surface mine.

My volume surface statistics show a cut volume of 5167.22 cy and fill volume of 8456.18 cy.

The sample line group volume report show cumulative cut of 5527.67 cy and fill of 8465.56 cy.

What could be some causes of this disparity. All reference surfaces are built from points and use a non-destructive boundary.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: SSA Storage Volume Is Double Of Pondpack Volume

Apr 24, 2013

I want to use it as my primary hydrologic and hydraulic modeler.  It only makes sense.  Well, I got the program to work and had things linked in and was able to route a storm through the network.  But when I routed the storms, I had to model double the storage that i expected.

So I went back to the program I'm familiar with - Pondpack by Benltey - and designed the same system I routed in SSA in that program - and got the storage volume that I would expect for a site of this size - about 2 acres.

Is there possibly a setting that I'm missing that makes my outlet structures route slower or less than they should?  Or is there some other reason that a system would give this kind of inflated need for storage?

I fixed it with the hierarchy panel. I clicked pivot in the panel, then affect object only, then center to pivot. this makes the the object stick to the gizmo, bringing it back to default setting (at least im 99% sure that was default.) I thought i had been on the right track.

3ds Max :: Main Gizmo And Vertices Disappearing?

Oct 30, 2012

My main gizmo (move, scale, rotate) is vanishing from the scene and I am unable to execute simple move/rotate/scale actions. The gizmo will reappear if I shift the viewing angle in the viewport. However this is getting frustrating because I might be viewing at the angle I need to execute a move/rotate/scale, but I can't and have to shift viewing angle to bring back the gizmo.

Also at present I am unable to view vertices when in sub-object mode (Edit Poly). I don't know if I accidentally triggered something or what, but the vertices suddenly disappeared and all I can see is the lines for the edged faces (not the vertices). Oddly enough, I am able to see the last vertice that I was interacting with, but cannot click or view any other vertices of the object.

I have checked everything i can think of, they aren't locked or on a locked layer. I converted them to an editable mesh and could move them like this but the gizmo remains stuck at the origin.

Probably something really simple, just never came across it before.

3ds Max :: Making Angle Of Gizmo Appear When Rotating Plane With (e)?

Mar 16, 2011

1. How do I make the angle of the Gizmo appear when I'm rotating the gizmo plane with 'e'?

2. Also, how do I rotate the gizmo itself, so that i can rotate it in any ambiguous axis as well if I wanted to.

For example, let's say I'm slicing a hollowed box usnig Shell modifier. I want to cut the box diagonally. I make the slicing plane vertical using x rotatin axis (red) at perfect 90 degrees (this is why I want to see the angle displacement when rotating a gizmo), then becaue I want to cut it vertically, I rotate the plane on z rotation axis (blue) 45 degrees. Now, I want this cut to be slanted. That means I have to change BOTH x and y axis with equal amount to achieve symmetrical cut I want. ("5 snaps of rotating the slicing plane on x axis and y axis" something like this)

What I want is change the orientation of the gizmo itself so that x or y rotation axis becomes the angle I want the box cut to be slanted at.

3. I've been using 3ds max for rendering most of the time, and didn't really have time to ask myself, why is it such a pain in the a** to get the correct effect I want from max? Viewport and renderd product doesn't match at all for me. Rendering should be just a way of making the viewport image much prettier, not turning garbage into an artwork. Because of the difference between the viewport and renderd image, I constantly have to do test render at 320x240 to see how it looks.

When I say the two doesn't match, it includes but not limited to:

-Lighting Both daylighting system and artificial lights(photometric/standard)
-Intensity
-Shadow casting accuracy
-Material

Scale mismatch of rendering and viewport.

-Color
-I'm guessing it may be because of the lighting that the colors are very off.
-Unexpected glow on my model from other surrounding objects.

Sketchup or Rhino shows vaguely how it's going to look when it's rendered, just poor quality. Why is it so not intuitive in max?

Maya Modeling :: Moving / Focusing Manipulator Gizmo?

Apr 18, 2012

I am wondering if it is possible to move/focus the manipulator gizmos in Maya.

If I for example am working on a tall plank and want to align the bottom part with something I'd zoom in to be more precise, but since the manipulator is stuck in the middle of the plank I have to zoom out anyway and find a spot where I'm fairly zoomed in but still can see the manipulator.. If there is a way to make the manipulator follow on the screen when i zoom in (without altering the pivot point) I'd be able to work so much easier.I am of course talking about all the manipulators (move, rotate and scale).
