3ds Max Modeling :: GIS Visualization - Creating Realistic Terrain From DEM?
May 14, 2012
how to use GIS maps, and LIDAR (etc) information to create terrain, and man-made features within Max2012/3.
I have a long history using MAX but not importing this kind of data, with any success.
Generally, I know that Global Mapper is the good source for hirez imagery based on geospatial coordinates. Not sure how to use GM, but I bet they have tutorials. Mapping GM data onto a Max mesh is possible.
But when it comes to creating realistic terrain from DEM, or Lidar data, I'm not sure where to start.

I know that I can just manually move the vertices around or use FFD (4X4X4). So far the two previous methods seem to be the best but I want it to be a little more natural and not manually dented by the hand of man. I'm working on a few sort of apocalyptic designs, buildings put together by corrugated dented metal and such.

I am an intermediate at Photoshop CS1, been using it for roughly 1.5 years on and off, however, I am finding it very hard to find any tutorials for realistic terrains for Photoshop.
This image (The arrival) is what I am trying to achieve. You can see that on the bottom of the picture are hills, moutains and grass - I have no idea with where to start to create something similar to this.

My goal is to make a terrain from a height map. The terrain shall be used in a 3d game on the Xbox360. Since I don't want the game to render more polygons than visible by the game camera the terrain needs to be divided into a number of tiles for culling purposes.
So what I've done so far is to create a plane (10x10 with 10x10 subdivisions). I then clone the plane into an 2d array with a total of 100 planes. I then group the planes into a single group. This gives me a terrain object consisting of 100 planes and a size of 100 X 100 units.
Now, here is my question: Is it possible to apply a displacement modifier to this group/planes so that a heightmap will modify the planes and thus create a terrain where each tile is only affected by its "part/area" of the heightmap?
I've tried by adding displacement modifiers to the planes but when applying a heightmap each plane is affected by the whole heightmap and thus the result is that the terrain group consists of a number of identical "mini terrain" planes.

so I am trying to figure out how best to create the terrain for this mine site. I thought maybe I could do this with vue, but it proved to be very difficult. I was thinking of using contour lines but that in itself can be messy with some very ugly triangulation. I posed a picture of what it is I am trying to atchive.

I often work with Civil Engineers and I use line work from Civil programs such as 3D Civil and Bentley MX. These programs give me splines (see image 1). I trace over the lines to create poly surfaces which may end up being grass or concrete etc (see image 2)
I don't use the terrain command because the command is not always suitable. The lines I import often have gaps or other issues thats why I find it faster to trace over the lines to create my poly surfaces.
But if you look at image 2 it's very blocky. I would like to smooth between these surface to make the terrain look more natural. I have played with turbosmooth and meshsmooth but sometimes they screw up the surface or don't work at all.
How I could make my surfaces more natural and less blocky.

I'm currently facing this problem of lofting/elevating the drawing.
The drawing had all the 3D polyline and I need to join them. I have no problem joining a 2D polyline, but now i'm facing this problem.

The starting point:
I have a JPG image of a battlefield wherein the height contours in feet are marked as faint lines (like a closed contour line for 390 feet, another for 420 feet, etc etc.)
The desired final product in Photoshop:
A grayscale RAW document that shows the height variations in gray tones.
Low lying troughs need to be darker and higher elevations need to be lighter.
See picture below for example:
I am ignoring the roads and other features in the battlefield.
All I am interested is the technique of converting the height contours into a smoothly varying grayscale image.
I am a complete Neanderthal when it comes to Photoshop. I do have a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 on my PC.
I have been toying around with the package on and off. But nothing useful has come out yet.
Now to my specific questions
*How do I bring in the height contours into Photoshop? I have tried the magnetic lasso tool and able to trace a height contour with good fidelity.
I am kind of stuck at this point. Do I save the selection to a new layer? Do I thus create one layer for each of the height contours?
Say one layer for the all the 390 feet contours, another layer for the 420 feet contours, one more for the 360 feet contours etc etc?
*Assume that I have somehow brought in all the height contours successfully into a new Photoshop document.
How do I create a gradient effect between the contours?
The lowest height in the map is 300 feet and the highest areas are at 480 feet.
Thus the area enclosed by the 300 feet contour lines needs to be darkest (pitch black) and the area enclosed by the 480 feet contour lines needs to be lightest (pure white).
The areas in between need to go progressively from dark to light shade.
How do I achieve this?
*Assume that I have created now a PSD document that has these smoothly varying grayscales. How do I convert this to a RAW image?

I'm trying to create some realistic glass tube-like objects, but I can't seem to get it right. but the main problem i've run into is that if the background is clouds,or something that doesn't have a lot of definition and color variation, it really looks nothing like glass.

I'm looking for a more realistic way of creating grout. Basically what I have is an underlying seamless texture with a 2px grid sitting on top (pillow emboss)...it's just not realistic enough though. I'd really like to find a way to add some jaggedness to it so the edges aren't so perfect. I've tried the distort/ripple filter, but that really didn't look good...it kept the corners sharp. I also thought the Custom Shape Tool may work if it was one long squiggled line tiled into a grid, but that won't necessarily look great either since the tile's corners won't be rounded.
I'm looking for a quick workflow if possible, as the tile size may vary (6x6, 8x8, 12x12, etc.).

Was wondering if there are some ways in converting a highly realistic rendering of an object generated in a 3D program into a more illustrative, simplified, alittle less realistic version in Photoshop?
The object has plenty of silver reflections, HDRI environment map reflections, precise shadows and highlights, etc. I just want to make it look more generic and not as polished I guess.
Are there filters or plugins that will do this in a plug in play method or is it more prodedural and manual?

I am fairly new to 3ds max and I am having trouble creating a tunnel, this will eventually be used for a cave.
I created a plane and converted to poly then extruded and moved some vertices to create a circular shape, then I deleted the polygon so it is hollow.
However it only appears at certain angles, I want the inside and the outside to be seen at both times, you can see what I mean in this picture: [URL] ....
I flip the normals and it switches from the outside shown to inside vice versa.

Is there a way to select either vertices on a polygon or points on a curve and create an object at those points?
The snapping of objects to curve points isn't very accurate, so if possible, the above would greatly speed up my workflow.

I was following a tut on how to create text and all was working well then I decided to delete my text from the viewing panel and start again and now I cannot create any text because I get this message - / Error: bevelPlus3 (Bevel Plus): Group 2 curve 2 is not inside the previous curve. Group these curves appropriately in Adobe (R) Illustrator (R)
What does this mean?? Im not even using illustrator! If I delete the word and write another one it seems to be ok but if I want to create my original word I get the same message again? Also the text doesn't look very good, some of the letters are sort of squashed or rubbing on others or the hollow parts missing etc.

I am in the process of modeling a new character and have to ask this question. What is the best way to create an Afro. Right now, I am thinking about just modeling the base shape of how everything will look, and then applying Maya fur to the necessary faces. I also wanted to note that this will be an animated character as well.
I have attached an image of the style haircut I am going for .

Is there a way to do this? After perusing some threads on creating edges from vertices, the "Create" tool under "Edit Geometry" doesn't seem to solve my issue. In Blender, you can create a face by selecting at least three vertices and pressing "F". Is there anything similar to that feature in 3DS Max?
I'm using the 2010 version.

I've been working on creating a sword in 3D Max for the last couple of days and have run across a problem. At the base of the blade, it goes up straight for about an inch and then tapers out and up another half inch in a curve. From there, the blade tapers/curves back in, then out once more to create a thicker end of the blade, width wise. I need to know a simple way of doing those curves. A friend of mine suggested using quick loops, then individually scaling them to get the curving effect. That just seemed like it took too much time to me, and I thought there must be a simpler way. I tried adding a taper modifier to the selected area, but that didn't really seem to do much, except give the opposite effect that I wanted.

Is there an easy way to copy a line of vertices and have it create new faces on the same object?
I have a rectangle, viewing from the side, that I have already modified extensively. I simply need to create additional vertices / faces along the length of the rectangle.

I have a minor problem with creating some polygons on the edge of the window - inner and outer side. As you can see here: I need to connect neighbouring vertex and I do not want to do it manually by creating polygons one by one. Isn´t there any modificator in max I could use to do that automatically??
