3ds Max Animation :: How To Lock Z Axis Of Object With Upper Arms Z Axis
Jan 25, 2013
I'm rigging a shoulder pad to a biped and I'd like it to only rotate on one axis. Google hasn't been that useful, and I hope I don't need scripting for this kind of minor thing. I'm rather new to 3Ds Max Design but I'm learning fast and liking it so far!
I've attached what I want to effectively accomplish. I'm looking for a way to lock the z-axis of the object with the upper arm's z-axis.
EDIT: Reduced picture size.

I've created a mech robot and now I want to create a rig for it. But the problem is, that none of the joints are 'ball and socket joints'. So the joints can only rotate in one dimension, like a typical mechanical joint. My first solution was simply locking two out of three rotation axis for the bones and this works fine for FK animation. For IK animation however, it doesn't work. The locks are simply ignored. Is there any way to lock a rotation axis for an IK bone system?

Is it possible to automatically project the x-axis, z-axis or z-axis onto the sketch plane?
I.e. every time you open a new sketch the corresponding lateral and vertical axis will be projected onto the sketch.

I am busy working on rigging a character ( See attachment) to the best of my abilities and am running into some issues:
I have made a nurbs curve object which I intend to use as a controller in my rig, I have however modeled my character with his arms in a 45 degree angle so I snapped this particular object to the wrist and aligned it with the geometry...here comes the fun part , because it is a controller I wanted to have a clean channelbox zo I froze transformations which neatly sets every channel to 0, it also snaps the local axis to a world pivot orientation....
I went in componentmode pressed the question mark thingy and thought it was working..but it still alters the values in the channelbox.
I basically want the same rotation axes editing capabilities as I have with joints, I will try fiddling with that next, but I can't believe that this can't be solved any simpler.
See the image in the attachment

i try to make an animation. I create a cylinder and i want to rotate it by longitudinal axis. i click 'components', select the cylinder and after i click 'position' to select the axis that axis system appears in the right side of the cylinder not in the middle. If i continue whit this settings the cylinder will rotate by a circle not by his longitudinal axis. How can i move that axis sistem in the middle of the cylinder? I can drag it but can't place it exactly in the middle.

how to lock sketch features onto an axis or any other reference point. Also, how to bring in reference features (like in ProE)
I am trying to extrude a figure off of one that has already been sketched, and the wrong lines keep moving when I change the dimensions.

I'm trying to animate a 6-axis robot in Inventor 2012 Pro, which moves to about 10 different locations. I'm using parameters to drive the constraints to position the wrist, and I have several different positional representations with unsuppressed / modified constraints. When I try to animate between the positional reps in IV Studio, the parts just snap into place instead of interpolating between each location. Also, I have to manually enter the timing for each step, instead of just entering the max angular velocity of each joint.
Would it be easier to create the animation in dynamic simulation using a spatial joint at the wrist? I'd like for the positions to still be modifiable through the parameters.

I'm a cartographer not a 3D modeler! However, I've been tasked with creating a simple animation of a two-axis solar PV panel as it tracks the sun across the sky during a single day.
I've got everything modeled but don't understand how to constrain and establish the motion relationships - IK chains, rigging and such. See attached image for my needs. I believe I have the rotation pivot points established.

I'm rigging a vehicle that doesn't quite behave like a typical train or truck trailer. And I have a question for the coupling. The rotations I want are best illustrated in the attached photo. I want to have a single axis (Y-axis) rotate where the coupling joins the cab and the trailer, and in the center of the coupling, I want to be able to rotate along the X and Z axes, but not the Y. Does that make sense?
A flexible sheathe will cover the actual coupling, so I've been using bones to try to do this which the sheathe will be skinned with. I just haven't created a rig that actually bends the way I want it to yet.

For some reason some of the joints in my character rig are displaying their local rotation axis and I am unable to turn them off. The usual Display>Transform Display>Local Rotation Axis doesn't do it. This doesn't apply to all joints, just some. This is very frustrating as it causes real clutter when rigging.

I am in the process of doing an animation for a PPT presentation. I have several series of images like the one attached which represents a card with some holes in it flat (if you like) on the desktop. I'd like to rotate the image 30 degrees about its vertical axis giving the (isometric) impression that it faces to the right (or left). Is there a functionality in Paint.NET which can achieve this?

I have several objects in a circular array. I want them to pivot on the y axis only so the Z faces toward the camera. How do I do this without the other axis (X,Z) rotating as well. The look at constraint wants to pivot on all three axis.

I'm doing a simple transform action. I want to move an object to a value on the Y axis. First of all, after recording the action, and setting the Y value to 64 px, the action is recorded as 64 pt, not px. This happens regardless of my 'Units' setting. Second, it ADDS the value to the current Y value, instead of just setting the new value, rendering the action useless.
Am I doing something wrong? I don't see a way to specify an absolute value vs a relative one. Is it just a limitation of Actions in Illustrator?

So perhaps I'm missing something blindingly obvious, but in previous versions of Maya, I've been able to simply hit F8 and check the '?' icon to be able to go in and individually rotate Local Rotation Axis to be the way I want.
For some reason I cannot find how to do this now in 2011? I've only been able to do them using the auto-tool.
Looking for the steps I need to take to be able to manipulate the local rotation axis individually as I have in the past now?

In the track view window, the Move Keys Horizontal and Vertical Buttons should restrict the movement of keyframes on the horizontal (time) or vertical (value) axis, but do not in my version of 3ds Max 2012 SP1. Work around include using the dope sheet or using the Keys > Slide or Keys > Scale Value menu items.

I have a cylindrical tube that I need to animate moving 180 degrees around a central axis remote from the cylinder. I also want to create a circular motion locally for the cylindrical tube as it follows the 180 degree arc.I planned on creating the 180 degree rotation first and then the local circular motion second.
When I created the first motion I tried to use an object (another cylinder) as the transform centre for the rotation. As soon as I click on "Auto-key" the "Use transform centre" option is greyed out. I therefore moved the cylindrical tubes own pivot to the required position for centre of rotation. After I created the 180 degree rotation I moved the pivot back so that I could create the local rotation. At this point I find that the original motion has now changed to suit the new pivot point.
how I can get the "Use transform centre" option to work in this instance?

(i.e., take two object Z axes and constraint them to be the same), but in C#. In particular, what puzzles me is that I cannot make
'Get the Z-axis work axis from the occurrent.
Dim oPartAxis As WorkAxis
Set oPartAxis = oPartOcc.Definition.WorkAxes.Item(3)
in C# because the Definition object has not a WorkAxis instance.

I have a width. I want to move an object along the x-axis, with this width. No problem. But when the UCS is rotated, it still moves the object along the original x-axis.
How do I move the object along the x-axis of the rotated UCS?
Movement along the z-axis will always be 0 (2D only).

Is it possible to rotate an object along the Y axis as opposed to just rotating in a 2D circle? I know it is possible to simulate 3D rotation, but that takes some tricky maneuvering in some cases. I was wondering if it isn't just a case of holding down a combination of Cntrl & Alt or Shift and dragging a selection point.
I have seen a video where a graphic is created - video is in high speed to show the various steps involved in creating the artwork and there is a section where it looks like the artist/designer rotates a rectangle so that the top left corner appears to be moving "out" of the screen and the right corner towards the "back" of the screen. It doesn't appear to be just a skewing of the object, but in fact it looks like it's in 3D.
