Photoshop :: Artifacts / Stripes In JPEG After Retouching / Opening In CS6?
Jun 11, 2013
We've encountered a huge problem with some JPEGs we retouched for print.Either directly after opening them in PS or after saving and closing the image (mostly the case) it's getting some kind of horizontal stripes / artifacts. Problem is, sometimes they only appear after saving the image, so we'd have to reopen every one a few times to make sure this error does not occur. Also, the images look abolsutely fine in the preview AND wehen placed in InDesign. Sometimes they're visible in the exported PDF, sometimes they aren't and we eventually find out when the product is already printed.
Â
We're running CS6 on OS X 10.7.5 with newest patches and Updates. All images are HQ stockphotos from familiar sites.

I have some really good resoloution images for a large 8x4ft poster project. but one of my clients larger images (an important one) is just a 1000 x 1000px image @ 72dpi that has some artifacts which needs to occupy a approximate 25 inch square on the final print. I can't get a better quality image than this from the client at this time as they don't have it. what techniques can I use in photoshop to increase the print size while improving the final printed image. In the past, I sized up the image to the size needed and set the dpi from 72 to 300dpi (using "bicubic smoother"), add some surface blur, add monochromatic, uniform noise @ 2% +/- (to help smooth out the artifacts). with this image now, there are a lot of flat shiny surfaces where the artifacts are more noticable, etc. what kind of techniques would you use for this kind of job? (apart form hitting the client xD)

I have a fully current version of Photoshop (ICloud). When attempting to open some jpeg files and pdf files, they remain ghosted and will not open. I think it may have to do with the settings in the 'open' window but i don't know what to do. ?????

When ever I open up a jpeg image in CS 6 it is opening at 2% to sometimes .5% These files are fairly large 3 to 6 megs, and the image size are standard 10'' x 16" for example.
Â
Is there a setting so I can view them at screen size when I open them so I do not have to make them bigger every time I open a new jpeg?

I'm using Photoshop CS 5.1 on an iMac, running OS 10.8.2. I've encountered an odd behavior. Photoshop is open. I try to open a tif or jpeg in Photoshop by control-clicking the icon, or double-clicking in Bridge. Instead of simply opening the doc, Photoshop launches again - so now there are two Photoshop icons open in my dock. (And if I check behavior in Activity Monitor, indeed there are two Photoshop 5.1's running.) I get a message.
Â
"The application has been moved, and its path has changed. To update the product configuration, click Update."
Â
Click Update. Enter admin password. But then the problem simply recurs. The update isn't sticking.
Â
The problem doesn't occur if I try to open a Photoshop doc by clicking it (just .tif and .jpg).
Â
When I look in 'recent items - applications' in the finder I see two Photoshop 5.1's. But there is only one Photoshop 5.1 in my Application folder.
Â
When I have two Photoshops open (as it were) neither one 'knows' about the windows open in the other. That is, if I have picture.psd open in one and picture2.psd open in the other, I don't see picture2.psd as an option in the bottom of the Window menu, if I'm viewing picture.psd.
Â
But when I quit and just re-launch Photoshop from the dock, it remembers the docs from both launches via 'open recent'.
Â
Most peculiar.
Â
This really isn't inordinately impacting my workflow but it's odd, and I think it's slowing the system. (I'm thinking of updating to CS 6. Maybe it will just go away!)

When I open a photo using photoshop, instead of opening up the actual image, it turns up a blank document? What to do? Some images open up but others don't.

I read in a library book that I can work with JPEG images in ACR by going to file >Open as selecting image and choosing the camera raw option. However the selected image appears in the main editing space, not in camera raw. I`m using elements 10 with windows XP.

I'm retouching some old family photo's
I'm able get rid of most of the scars and boost the colours of the old image as below:-
old
New
there is quite a lot of green noise on the image. Particularly the sofa. See below:-
I've run noise filters which can fix it a bit but to be honest it mainly just blurs the green into the black and makes the image that bit less sharp.

GIMP 2.6.10-1 on Debian 6 does not open JPEG files recently written by itself. The program freezes and the only way out is to reboot. Older JPEG files are opened as usual, and the problem files can be opened in Digikam and Fotoxx. A sample problem file is attached.

I am new to the entire graphics arts area. (I do network design for a living). I have been reading the "Adobe Photoshop CS5 Classroom in a Book" and I don't understand their logic for the order they say to use to retouch a photograph.
Â
Their order is:
Â
Duplicating the original image or scanEnsuring that the resolution is appropriate for the way you'll use the imageCropping the image to final size and orientationetc.Â
For their example they use a picture of a child walking around a ring with a brick wall as the background.
Â
Now, lets say that I wanted the final image to be of the child only and 3 inches wide by 5 inches high, and 72 ppi (pixels per inch) for a print.
Â
I disagree with the order of steps 2 and 3.
Â
In step 2, I decrease the pixel information to 72 ppi.
In step 3, I crop only to get the child
then I import the resulting picture into say Microsoft Word and stretch the picture to be 3 x 5 it would seem to be that I would be way below the 72 ppi desired result.
Â
What am I missing?

I would like to ask a question about architectural photography lighting and retouching techniques. You can see some sample sites below: URL.....
Â
These photos are very impressive and possibly taken as HDR.The question is; this transformation can be possible just photoshop retouching even using light? It looks like 3D rendering or PS drawing but we don't sure. Is it Photoshop Plug-In or what kind of technique is it?

I often find I need to remove something from a broad gradated area of an image, such as a bill board from a dusk sky. I've always tried to clone the image out, but end up with a mottled area of the sky. If I get it smooth, it seems to have a different texture because I've used a lower opacity in the brush. I've tried replacing the sky with a gradation but blending that at the horizon is always a bit iffy.

We all know the illustration in the glossy car brochure has been enhanced - before Pshop days it was done by film retouches. I admire that work and would like to achieve similar results - making my car photos more like 'glamor' shots or 'studio' shots, starting with pictures of my own vintage car a 1936 Ford.
Â
So far I've struck out on searching the web for techniques specific to this task, probably because I'm not using the best search terms. Automobile glamor retouching, or vehicle retouching was no luck.
Â
Is there a specific name for this kind of retouching/enhancing/studio look? If I had a clue as to whether it's a recognizable trade or specific job I might be able to follow that lead.
Â
Understand, i'm not asking you to do the work, just point me in the right direction.OTOH, if you do know of a site devoted to this I'd be very interested. I do remember completing a lesson in Scott Kelby's earlier 7 point book, where an automobile shot was improved, and that's been useful.

I want to edit in a complete non destructive way, so i work with smart objects and separate blemish removal layers. However, when i double click on my smart object to edit it in camera RAW, after i save the changes, my blemish layer looks like this: Â
Â
On this particular example, i brought down the exposure on the smart object in camera raw and the corresponding exposure adjustment was not applied to the retouching layer as well. This defeats the whole purpose of making a separate adjustment layer if i have to make a new one every time i make adjustments to to the smart object.

I am interested in building an automated retouching system for a specific form of photography. The system needs to be able to handle a large workflow of images and create a look that is desirable and state of the art. I can see that there are a lot of systems out there that deal with portraiture etc and feel that if we could develop a similar system with actions for the specific work that I shoot it would be great.

I use Photoshop CS5 extended version 12.0 64bit. I don't know why but some of my files I created have stripes on them when I reopen to work on them. It looks like some layers get corrupt and have horizontal stripes along the width of the image.

I know it is quite easy to do in Photoshop, but I forgot how to do this. I want to replace green background in the top image to darker and lighter pink stripes to match the color of the website.
I've been going in the direction of:
1) Select color range (Pick green and just + the other shades of green to it)
2) Create Clipping mask from the Selection (I actually have all the green background on white and nothing else on the screen, but I am kind of stuck at this point)

On your face, there are about 20,000 pores, and if you don’t have perfect skin, it seems like half of them turn into some for of unwanted skin irritation, a blackhead, whitehead, rosecea, dry skin, flaking skin, and probably about 1 dozen other things that I have never heard of. Nobody likes these imperfections in skin, especially on photo day. This lesson is going to show you how to remove blemishes using gimp.

This is easily the best method I have found so far for retouching skin and textures in GIMP. Using wavelet decompose you can work on the different frequencies of features in an image independently and with unparalleled control.

I'd like to superimpose (overlay) an image onto a background image that is comprised of stripes on a white (or transparent) background. I don't want the overlaid image to appear between the stripes, only on them. Is there any way to do this without having to erase the overlay image where it covers the white/transparent background?
Example: imagine the red and white stripes of the American flag, and I want to overlay the text of the Gettysburg Address on the flag, but only on the red stripes, and the text itself is rotated at about a 15 degree angle to horizontal. Much of the text will, thus, be missing, and it won't be readable as a text, but that's exactly the effect I want.
