Illustrator :: Mapping Art Around A Sphere
Sep 12, 2013I've created 2 custom symbols to wrap around my sphere, but the more complex one will not map!

View 1 RepliesSo I'm a novice at making 3D objects in Illustrator. I'm attempting to make a cut sphere in Illustrator. I'm not sure if what I want to achieve is best done through pen tool and gradients or 3D revolve. Here are some screenshots of my attemps thus far:
This one is with the pen tool:
This is as far as I got with the 3D Revolve:
I'm trying to have a sphere within a sphere, with the outer sphere being cut revealing some of the inner sphere. The outer sphere will have a lower opacity.
I'm having a challeng with creating the look I want using 3D Revolve. The sphere is part of a logo, and needs to essentially match the color of part of the logo, but I also want it to have a smooth 3D quality. To start, here's the color I want to be predominant in the sphere: Here's what I've come up with thus far:This is as close as I've been able to get to the original color, but there's no gradation between the shades. Here are the 3D Revolve settings:
Surface: Plastic Shading
Light Intensity: 50%
Ambient Light: 70%
Highlight Intensity: 95%
Highlight Size: 95%
Blend Steps: 256
Shading Color: Black
And here's another experiment: This has the blend from dark to light I'm looking for, but the base color has become much more purple, and doesn't really match the original. Here are the settings for this version:
Surface: Plastic Shading
Light Intensity: 40%
Ambient Light: 0%
Highlight Intensity: 100%
Highlight Size: 100%
Blend Steps: 50
Shading Color: None
I've played around with diffuse shading, but haven't even come as close as these two samples. So basically, what I'm looking for is the base color of the first sample (maybe a little lighter), with the blend from dark to light of the second.
I found a solution to my objects being rendered incomplete by adjusting the perspective angle by a degree or two but this didn't solve my problem of the graphic map being incomplete.
Basically I'm making labels for different sized bottles (i.e. wine, beer and sake)the wine worked so far but for some reason this sake bottle's label wouldn't complete rendering.I dunno if it is because the side of the bottle is slightly angled or what but I cannot get it to complete the image map.
System: Mac Pro, OS X 7.4, Illustrator CS6
I'm trying to open a document that says "LTUnivers-BasicBlack is missing". I have a font called Univers LT Std on my system. How can I tell Illustrator to use Univers LT Std wherever it sees LTUnivers?
View 1 Replies View RelatedBasically I am trying to map a world map vector (symbol) onto a 3d revolve half circle in Illustrator. The problem I am having is that the quality of the map vector is significantly reduced when mapped on the 3d revolve. Is there any way I can have it keep it's "full" vector quality or is there something else I am missing.

So why the loss in quality and how can I prevent this?
I'm learning from the official books for Adobe Illustrator CS5 and I found that the 3D view CS6 I always crash. CS5 works without problems. See the video here: [URL]

Can you confirm that the error is not only me, but that's really wrong version CS6? Specifically, I use 64-bit version.
I have created a sphere and mapped some type around it. However, I can't figure out how to knock out the sphere to 'clear' so I ONLY see the type and not the sphere (I'm placing the type on top of something else). I've done some searching online with no success.

Photoshop is fine, as is the Mac.Only Illustrator is acting up.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have created a 3d object to look like a coffee mate carton. I tried to post images on here but I keep getting an error. The art work that I want to put on my object consists of a number of elements which have been saved as a symbol. (image) However whenever I try to map it to my object nothing happens. I have used some of the system symbols and these work fine. I have also made a simple label of text only and this works fine. Is there a problem using more complex symbols in this way?
View 3 Replies View RelatedEverytime I make a sphere, even if I restart illustrator and make a new document, I get that ugly dark spot in my image. I don't know what the heck it is. I've tried everything I could think of to get rid of it, but I can't seem to.
The way I made the shere was by taking an elipse, making it into a perfect circle and then using the scissor tool to make it into a half-circle, then using the Effect>3D>Revolve Menu option to generate a sphere.
Here's the effect I'm going for, maybe a bit more glow and lines do not need to arc like that: [URL]
And like this: [URL]
I'm having a couple of problems: 1) if I put the network lines on the map it looks too flat so I think I need to apply them to a slightly larger invisible sphere; 2) when I add a blur/outer glow to the lines they do not wrap cleanly on the sphere, they kind of break up and distort. Plain lines do not seem to have this problem but objects with effects do.
I have created a sphere shaped logo for a client in AI. I've used the 3D revolve function and mapped clouds over the top of it (the clouds were drawn initially as a shape).
The client is suggesting that the sphere is not perfectly crisp and that you can see some slight stepping in the curve around the sphere and the curve around the clouds mapped to the sphere. I've not come across this before (not sure if she's just being really picky, blowing the logo up too large for scale, or I'm just missing something really stupid!).
Anything to tighten the curve of the sphere so that it is crisper?
I can definately see her point in the clouds mapped on top of it - perhaps if I try more anchor points on the clouds path, that may tighten the curve on the clouds? Is this something I can do automatically?
Also, what are the best settings to export out for the crispest format (ie, Progressive Compression + 300 dpi resolution + Art Optimised sampling?).....

Here is the image I am working with URL....The words coca cola are in red in my design and whenever I add it to 3d mapping it red it no longer red but transparent. The stroke is grey on the bottle.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have simple a 3D bottle shape created from about 16 points and I am trying to map a gif image on to it usning CS5. No matter what I have done (work from a new document, etc.) I always get the error message. I also receive this error when I attempt to map a jpg image on to the same shape. I have attempted this on three different Windows 7 machines running CS5 with the same result. When I try it with CS6 the program closes with a catastrophic error and no message. I do not receive this error using the default symbols. The gif and jpg images are imported and imbedded into the document and then moved to the symbols library.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an interactive board with tools (such as pen or eraser) which I want to integrate with the AI. The typical scenario woulld be as follows: the user lifts the pen from the tray, the pen event will me mapped into selecting Pencil Tool from AI toolbar after which the user can add freehand annotations to the AI document.
Is there an API which would allow me to map abailable hardware tools with relevant AI tools? Is there an example which would demonstrate such integration?
Im putting up my first web page using PS to create the template, my problem though is how do I link things? I mean I get the template all set up and I have these nice words, but its a image how do I go in and link the words to well...links so that they can be put into the viewing window, which is another topic because I havent figured that one out yet either.

I'm having difficulty getting the UVW Map to render like it is shown in the view port. See the link for pictures of my setup.
I've tried messing with the material editor and the UVW Map, but no luck.
Here is a still from what will be a trade show video. The problem is that the longitudinal lines are a bit wobbly, especially near the poles, for instance in the top right quadrant, between the orange and yellow earplugs. [URL]..........
I created a new 3D object with the preset sphere from a layer that is a grid of my client's products. As the sphere rotates, the black edges of the grid straighten out as they come around to the front, and then get wobbly again as they approach the edge of the sphere. At first, I made the black part of the grid from a bitmap mask (which had caused a problem in an earlier 3D file) but no, same problem when I made the grid from a vector mask.
Pretty sure it is not a hardware issue as I have gone thru all the optimization steps for using the Mercury Graphics Engine on my quad-core iMac 27" with a supported video card, and the latest version of OSX.
In the attached Inventor 2013 ipt, I am trying to use the extrude / cut command to lop off the top of the sphere and I am not having any success.

I have been following a tutorial on a wireframe sphere and all was going well until I was told to go to: "Filter > Distort > Sphereize"
I am using Photoshop 6 and this filter isn't included in my menu.
Doe's anyone out there know of anywhere that I can download this filter from as Its an important part of the project I am working on.
We no longer have Reactor Softbody, so if I wanted a sphere to be dropped on to a table how do I get it to squash and deform as it hits the table (other than doing it manually with a FFD etc)
MassFX would do the basics of that but I can't see how it could deform the mesh?
What is the proper way to apply the symmetry modifier to a sphere ? I created this custom android bot. After I create a sphere with hemisphere I create the eye and split the sphere in two then zero it out on the grid. Then I apply the modifier. When I do that it does not project the other half of the sphere even when it's on flip and x axis. The mirror part is kind of on the back side of the sphere. What happens is I have to rotate the mirror part to line it up and up the thresh hold a lot to get the back side to connect.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am getting a weird shading artifact in my viewports when I create primitives with curved surfaces, such as a sphere or a torus. It doesn't show up when making boxes. Here is a picture showing what I mean.
All I have done is clicked and dragged to create a sphere primitive. I have then moved it to different positions on the viewport to show how the artifact changes when its position is changed.
This happens in all viewports, in both "Shaded" and "Realistic" settings.
I am using Autocad 2010. I need to draw curved lines on the surface of a sphere, but how to achieve this? I need to sweep a profile across the surface of the sphere.
