GIMP :: Converting Flat Photo Into Texture For 3D Shape
Mar 29, 2013
I want to create a a texture for a 3D model of a human head - I don't have the original template but I do have these examples which I can use as a template. [URL]
I think for the moment I'll skip the mouth and ears and eyes aren't so hard to sort. What I can't find however, is any information on how I would go about making the face, hair and neck. What seems easiest for a cack-handed individual such as myself is to use a photo (flat-lit, straight-on, neutral expression, unobscured) of someone's face and then deform it and use some clone-like tools to fill in any gaps.
Obviously I'll need to match the coordinates of particular points on the face and keep large sections entirely unmodified. Then I'll need to do some sort of cloning or smudging to extrapolate bits of the head I don't have.
Well, is it even possible to work from a photo (or couple of photos).

I've got Mudbox 64 bit and every time I create a new mesh the texture seems flat (Image Included) I've recently upgraded my system from 32 bit to 64 bit, and I never had this happen with the 32 Bit.

I just read the thread the thread "...plus ask about erasers" but it doesn't answer my question about combining shapes to remove unwanted portions - or at least I didn't quite understand it. Here's my issue. I've created a nice "background" image with ripples and live effects, but it has gaps, and isn'tthe right shape. I need to erase parts of it and clip it to the right shape, but every time I try to do this using the slice tool, it puts the gaps back into the image! Attached is my image and the shape I want to clip it to.
I just tried converting the ripple shape to a bitmap copy and then slicing the shape - that doesn't get me the rippled effect I want - just the shape I already have. Then, I tried just creating the water ripples in my shape - but again that leaves gaps and when I try to "slice" them away it does all kinds of weird things to the shape..

Part of my job is to lay out blanks of 3D models so the blank can be sent out and cut. Is there a way to convert an Inventor ipt file to a flat blank? I have tried "convert to Sheet Metal" but Inventor reads the pre-bent part as the flat layout. I am currently using Inventor 2013. i attached a drawing for an example.

I'm having trouble creating a flat pattern from a solid i've modelled.
Workflow: Created a 2D sketch in xy plane and extruded -1084 mm in z dir. Created cut, and extruded slots which were then patterned with rectangular pattern.
Converted to sheet metal, and then tried to flat pattern.
Tried to remove all features exept the 1st extrude, still having the same problem.
I have tried to set the correct material and sheet metal defaults, but still no luck.

Is there a way to unfold a coil shape to get the flat pattern? When I try to unfold the attached part I get an error message (see attached error_msg.jpg). We have been using AutoPOL to unfold these kind of shapes (which works fine). But since we have a very old version which we really need to upgrade, I was wondering if nowadays Inventor could handle coil unfolds.
If this will not work with the current IV2013 release, will this then be implemented in a future release? Are there any alternatives or should I just go for the AutoPOL upgrade?

Is there any plugin that will fill in a shape with an entire texture. For example say I have a hexagon shape that I want to fill with a texture, it would take the texture and squeeze, bend and distort it to match the shape of the hexagon.
This ability would greatly speed up texturing UV maps for a model. I have yet to find a single paint program since I had DPaint on the Amiga years ago that has this feature. I've looked thru the plugin list and the closest I found was 'Shaped Gradient' which is exactly what Im looking for but doesn't support textures.

I've been working on converting a vector into a shape and am having no luck. I've done this before and have had no problems. I import my vector .ai into AE as a comp (sequence tickbox not selected). Once I've got it in, I drag to the project, then click layer > create shape from vector layer. My shape populates at the top, my .ai file is off and what is just one of the three colors, along with the shap. I've checked the the shape's contents, every group has the correct fill with the correct blending mode. Also, I've tested other logos with the same results--one color displays while the others don't. I'm working with "ray-traced render engine" And, I've reset my preferences.

I need to convert shapefiles to a pretty old version of dxf. Shapefiles is a file format used in geographical systems.
[URL].......
For example a shapefile could contain points, lines or polygons, and attributes for each point/line/whatever.
Now I need to convert shapefiles to an old version of the dxf format, I don't even know exactly what version so I'll have to find out by trial and error I guess. (But a gut feeling says somewhere in the 90's.)
Luckily there are tools to convert shapefiles to the modern versions of DXF, but where do I go from there?

New to Illustrator and design in general. We are looking to update or re-create our company logo and wondering how to take a photo that i can then use to create a texture. We flame cut and grind steel plate for the tool and die industry, mold shops and machine shops. Our current logo can be seen at [URL] ... was created by a company no longer involved with us.
Anyway I would like to take some photos of steel plate and use it to create textures for the new logo similar to the current one. I took a few with a digital camera and then sent them to a logo design firm, which we may or may not use and when they applied the texture to some of the logos it is out of scale and way to large. examples can be seen at [URL] .... you will notice some design use gradient silver instead of my image I sent and I have been told that the powers that be want a texture taken from one of our ground plates.
So now i have thought about trying to create a logo or at least a number of "B" designs that ahve a properly scaled texture that I can use as a basis and submit to the design firm.

I have a photo (attached) and wish to do two things with it. I hope a) to emphasise both the earthenware texture of the vase and its wooden background to give the image some contrast and b), to recolour the brown fence in royal blue. I have tried to do this using the eyedropper tool and then Image | Adjustments | Replace colour, but because the vase itself is coloured in a shade of brown I find that in addition to blue replacing brown as the fence colour, it also replaces it as the colour of the vase.
So, I somehow need to 'lift' the vase from the image, then recolour the fence in isolation, and then put the vase back into the photo - but I am not sure how to do that.

I often use photoshop to open binary flat files, either 8 or 16 bit depth. In photoshop if I select open using photoshop raw format, a dialog box pops up asking what the image dimensions are (ie, 512x512), the number of channels (ie 1), the bit depth and the byte order. Is there any way to do this in GIMP, either native or with plugins... I dont think that the UFRaw will work as these files do not come from a camera-- they are images of satellite imagery that are just binary flat files.

I am bringing into an old photo which is in fact a scan of a printed photo, an item selected from a recently taken photo and I need it to look as if it belongs to the old photo.
The immediate difference is in the texture, best shown with a photo here. try viewing it also by moving head laft and right ! I can even see a regular pattern of something within the cruder pixels. I could take days to try out various filters, it may be it requires a combination of filters and given the variables involved the chances of hitting upon the right settings and the right filters is remote and it would take days. Is there a way of sampling the recipient photo and then applying the effect it sees to the cleaner looking modern photo ?
I come across this situation all the time when one photo, even a modern digicamera one, taken by someone else, differs from another photo, unless the 'textures' can be made to match, the added in pics stick out like a sore thumb ! A photo with jpg artefacts receiving a cleaner photo is one common occurrence, try geting the cleaner one to look very jpegged, not easy.

I often use my digital camera to take pictures of flat, rectangularobjects, like framed paintings on a wall, book or album covers, orpages of documents. Of course, I can't take these pictures straighton and perfectly level, but that's OK. I know what the dimensions ofthe objects are, so I can just correct the perspective in software.
In Graphic Converter (a Mac OS X app), I just use the "Unskew"function. I simply need to select the four corners of the rectangularobject I photographed. (Guide lines connecting the four points to locate them.) After I've located the four corners, I tell it to"unskew" and a rectangular image is produced.
Does Gimp have any function like this? I found the perspective tool, but that requires me to manually shift the perspective and eyeballwhen I think a rectangular image is produced. That's not nearly as convenient.

I am trying to convert a full color photograph into an image with just a few colors.
The purpose is to allow the photo to be embroided with color stitching. I envisage the final result will be a diagramatic representation of the photo.
Is anyone familiar with the photoshop tools I can use to play around with and automatically convert the photo to just a few colors?
