AutoCad :: Setting Position Relative To Another Object?
Oct 10, 2012
How do I set the position (i.e. move) and object relative to another object?
Specifically, I am using Architecture 2013. I have two parallel walls. How do I set the distance of one relative to the other? I know I can measure the distance, calculate an offset, and move one by that offset. But there must be an easier way?

I'm want to drag an objects anchor and have the position co-ordinates offset by opposite amounts so it doesn't appear to move postioin on screen. IS there a tool for that?

I am using multiple objects to make larger more complex objects. As part of this I need a way to select a large group of objects and adjust their Z Order. For example, say I have a grid of 100 squares, 10 columns of 10 squares. I want to arrange them so the squares (rows) toward the bottom of the grid are in front (bring to front/bring forward) the squares that are higher up in the grid. Basically, every row should be further back in the Z order than the row below it.
Now you might say well for a grid this is simple just select every object/square in the row and move them forward or back as needed. But in my case they are not actually arranged in a neat grid, they are pretty randomly thrown together. But the requirement is still the same, I want to take all of the objects and arrange them so the objects that are closer to the bottom of the art board are further forward in the Z order than the objects above them. Basically think of the bottom of the artboard as being the front most row of the Z order and the top of the art board as the furthest back in the Z order. I use this type of configuration to give the perception of depth and form.
Below you can see an example of a cloud like graphic created using this technique by manually adjusting each individual object which takes forever on larger objects. I pick a point toward the bottom, and then I manually start adjusting Z order on each item until I get the effect I want. Having some way to pick a point on the art board and then arrange the objects above and below it on the Y axis by moving them forward or back in the Z order as needed would save me a ton of time. As you can see below, from about the 3rd or fourth row of squares from the bottom, I have brought those to the front, and each row above or below it has had it's Z order adjusted to give the impression of depth. Each consecutive row after the foreground row is progressively further back in the Z order. Any way to automate this so that I can atleast have a base to start with before I start doing my manual adjustments?

If you hold down F4 to orbit in 3D (equally press the Orbit button under view on the ribbon) you can temporarily set the orbit pivot position by left clicking the mouse. I have a 3D mouse (3dconnexion spaceball 5000) installed on my workstation so can perform the same view manipulations without technically having to enable the orbit command. But I can't change the pivot position unless I activate the orbit command and then left click - making the main advantage of a 3D mouse for me a bit of a nonsense..
Any command/key combination that allows me to setup a custom button to set the orbit pivot position?

I know it is possible to precisely position an object in space and on top of another object by entering coordinates. However I prefer to work "relative" with snapping. I used to work with Rhino 5 in 3D. I liked the possibility to constrain the vertical movement of the object being moved. I could then place my object an the same height as an existing one by dragging the cursor over the desired part (notice the white line in enclosure 1). It's like an invisible (snapping) plane stopping the vertically moved object.
Is there a way to achieve the same thing with ease in Autocad by using snapping, ortho-mode, 3D-Move Gizmo or any other kind of technique. I managed to constrain the vertical movement with the Gizmo but I'm unable to achieve the desired effect mentioned above.

Is there any way to make print merge fields relative in position to other fields or to non-variable text.
For example if I am doing address labels and I have fields for City and State:
Their positions are absolute, and the state ends up overwriting the city for long city text, as does the comma.
What I want is for the comma to follow the last letter of the city, and then state to follow that.
And yes, I realize that I can combine all three into one field, but I am asking this as a general usage of the feature. One doesn't always have control over the source.

What controls origon (x,y = 0,0) of a objects coordinates? I'm not refering to which the "Reference Point".I use a bunch of artboards and sometimes origon originates from the newest artboard i have created, which is great for my workflow. I place a lot of objects using the top coordination tool.
But often the origon fixes it's position to the first artboard. Is there a way to control the origon?Specs: Win7, 64bit, Illustrator CS6 16.0.3.

I select an object, then I select the Relative to object button:in the Property Bar, the X and Y aren't in 0.0 ".I have to deselect and reselect again the object and after that X and Y are ok.Same thing if I deactivate the Relative to object button:the X and Y show me 0.0 ".I have to deselect and reselect again the object and after that X and Y show me the real page's coordinate.

I have a 2D plan and a 3D plan. The data is essentially the same on both, the only difference being that the 2D plan has several hundred points on it (all at elevation/z coordinate of 0, of which can easily be copied to the 3D plan).
I want to move those 2D points to their respective 3D positions. I.e. if point X is at coordinates 15213.321, 51646.632, 0 I would like to search in the Z direction above (or below; although in this data set it would always be above) for any object (line, polyline, 3dpolyline or an arc only I think) that crosses or is on this coordinate and then move the point (or place a new point) to that z coordinate. So if there is a line whose z value is 895.265 at coordinate 15213.321, 51646.632, then the point (that was originally 2D) would become 15213.321, 51646.632, 895.265.
Any lisp or other method in AutoCad that could accomplish this (ideally without having to select each point individually)? Surely this must have come up a few times before although I'm not too sure what search words to be using to look for info.

I have created a model on autocad which I have imported into autodesk inventor publisher...for my project I have to simulate an object's assembly and subsequent dissassembly. But to begin with my model is assembled so i have exploded it and now I want to put it back together - however I can't get the program to remember the position each component was originally in so when i try and move each component back it's all over the place and looks awful. Is there a way to mark an object's intial location so that i can move it back to exactly that place?

Im trying to wire an object's Z position to a custom attribute. I've frozen transforms, but whenever i wire the zero euler Z position to the attribute, when i control the attribute, i notice that my object is moving relative to world, and not to its position.
I want to move it along its own Z axis, not world axis.

Is it possible to setup a block so that an attribute position remaines fixed (absolute to drawing) when moving the block?
I've been playing around with creating a Coordinate Block by following these instructions: [URL] ........
What I would like is to be able to set the position of the Coordinate Label and Coordinate Object independently, so that if I move one in the drawing, it doesn't move the other. I've looked into Dynamic Blocks, and the "Lock Position" parameter. I can move the attribute independently, but still everytime I move the block, the attribute moves too.
Our company uses a custom Sheet/Coordinate system to follow flyoffs across a drawing, and I'm trying to learn how to automate the process. It's completely manually right now, so any changes to a drawing creates a lot of work renumbering these flyoffs.

We have, as our standard library default dimension style, a 1/32 fractional style, called "1/32-FRACTION". Various Object Types, like Linear Dimension are set to this Object Style. When I create a drawing, then these Object Defaults are in effect.
This means that, doing nothing while executing a dimension command, I get fractional dimensions by default. This works good.
However, sometimes I want to create a drawing where the default dimension style is "X.XXX-DECIMAL" without changing the Object Defaults found in the style library. I've tried to make the changes from within the style library and then save this as a template. However, when I try to make a drawing based on this template, Inventor states that the styles in the template differ from the styles in the library" and then busily goes about undoing what I careful did.
So I'm hoping there is something in the API I can call on to do this with a macro. Is it possible to write a macro that after you start a drawing, flips all the various Object Styles from "1/32-FRACTION" to "X.XXX-DECIMAL"?

So, when I reset the transforms of an object, it moves the geometry back to the frozen position but the pivot point gets places at the world origin.
That can't possibly be what is supposed to happen, is it?

I am busy working on rigging a character ( See attachment) to the best of my abilities and am running into some issues:
I have made a nurbs curve object which I intend to use as a controller in my rig, I have however modeled my character with his arms in a 45 degree angle so I snapped this particular object to the wrist and aligned it with the geometry...here comes the fun part , because it is a controller I wanted to have a clean channelbox zo I froze transformations which neatly sets every channel to 0, it also snaps the local axis to a world pivot orientation....
I went in componentmode pressed the question mark thingy and thought it was working..but it still alters the values in the channelbox.
I basically want the same rotation axes editing capabilities as I have with joints, I will try fiddling with that next, but I can't believe that this can't be solved any simpler.

Best practices for setting up systems in a lab environment. We have a lab enviroment of about 200 systems that access AutoCad, Inventor, Mechanical and others.
We need to have a customized interface come up when Autocad is opened by students.I have read that you can do this with profiles and workspaces and also with loading a acad.lsp file.
In the past we have just copied the Windows admin profile used to customize AutoCad to the default profile. In AutoCad 2013 that does not seem to grab everything. It doesn't seem to be the best way to do what we need.
We will also be moving to Windows 7 soon which will also cause an issue.I want to find the best way to do this with out having to deal with the Windows profile.

Is there an easy way to ensure that the position of attributes on a block match the position on another block?
I just used the ATTIN command to upload a bunch of data to the block attributes on a drawing, and now the information is all over the place.
Instead of going through each one manually and repositioning the attributes (a VERY lengthy process), I want to use a "correct" version as a template of sorts to inform the other selected blocks of where to place the attributes and have it reposition the whole thing automatically.
Is this even possible?

I would like to find out how to fix two components in an assembly relative to each other, and using VBA.
What I want to do is to build the assembly (which consists of two components A and B, and also other components) and then animate the joint in component B. In order to do so, I have to fix A to B so that A moves along with the joint motion. But my problem here is that the attachment of A to B is not definite - it depends on other components in the assembly, so I cannot predefine a constrain between the two.
Is there a way I can easily fix two components relative to each other in an assembly without prior knowledge on how they are positioned relative to each other?
I'm thinking of measuring and then constraining the origins of the two part files in 6DOF, but I'm not sure how i can extract the angle between the axes and then constrain them in the correct way (mating using angles has always been confusing for me).

Whenever I use "attachimage" within a drawing, I specify relative path. I would assume that if I open the file on another computer, AutoCAD would be able to find the image as long as it is in the same folder as the DWG file. This is never the case. I always get an error message stating that the reference is missing and it asks if I want to update its location. What good is specifying a relative path then? I'm using AutoCAD 2010.

Im at Autocad 2012.
When I start drawing a line from a specific point in the drawing and type in the dimensions via DYN - relative coordinates work like a charm, but when I start a rectangle from the same point and type in the dimensions (via DYN) it wont work.
It does not change when I set dynpicoords to 0 or 1. Nothing else happens when I type @ or # or nothing as prefix.
