1. In both AutoCAD and Sketchup you can rotate objects relative to the objects existing angle. In AutoCAD, for instance, you can start the Rotate command and select the object, enter the rotation base point, and then enter a reference point (such as the opposite end of the line). Sketchup's rotation command operates in much the same way.
2. Finally, is there a way to save a custom rotated view, so I can return to it on demand like the default views (top, left, right, back, bottom)? As you can probably guess I am working on building design that has some non-orthogonal lines and I am just looking for some workflow tips for modeling non-orthogonal components in 3ds Max.
DView commands. We're using layout drawings of sites that are aligned with True North.
We've been using DView to rotate site layouts within model space in order to to align the layout better within the window and set up icons as such. And we have multiple Sheets set up with different information being displayed (ie different layers turned off). But when we go to the sheets, the Paper Space view still shows it's Original Orientation.
What I'd like to know is there a simple way to set the various different layouts to the same as Model Space, Without having to manually DView each Viewport as well?
I have a sheet drawing with all my background xref'd into it. How do I rotate the view in model space so it will show appropriately in the sheet view in paper space?
I have a problem. Randomly today, the usual controls for moving, scaling and rotating are gone, instead there are just red lines for the X, Y and Z axis. How can I get the other ones back?
I am extremely new at Corel Draw X5. I am in the middle of a design; page 30cmx160cm (for printing purposes) however to make it easier my design is sitting 160cmx30cm
I have started the design consisting of 200+ objects. By grouping them i presumed that it would make one object and when I rotated them 90 degrees to fit the page they would rotate in the same they sat originally.
But when I rotate the group it rotates the individual objects on their individual axis not on a group axis.
Is there anyway getting around this without moving each individual object?
I am currently working with a point cloud inside of revit. But, The point cloud comes into revit in a geospatialy correct position. Therefore, it is skewed and not near the origin where you would normally model in revit. I need to be able to rotate my project without actually changing the position of my objects.
I use CAD alot as well so the best way to describe this would be, in CAD, being able to set your UCS to an object, and then later on reseting your UCS to world.
The main purpose of all this is to be able to bring my floor plan into a sheet without it being rotated to the same orientation as the Pointcloud.
The very first 3d program I ever used was Lightwave. The view ports in light wave pan and zoom simultaneously by default. I got use to Maya pretty quickly but I was wondering if this is a feature in Maya as well that I would have to turn on and I may not know about.
recently i tried working with the modeling toolkit in maya 2014, and it works great in perspective, but for some reason when im in component mode and I try and make a marquee selection, the marquee does not show up although it does select the component.
After selecting some component and try moving then with the translate handles, it does not move at all, instead it deselect the components.I am able to middle click move components.
So i decided to turn off the modeling toolkit and everything worked fine with the classic manipulators.
I am right now working on a door with a door handle and a lock.
So far i have gotten the door handle to work more or less.. The only thing that annoys me is that when i rotate the door handle to the limit, it'll reset rather than "lock" and just wont move anymore.. Anyways, that's not my main issue here.
My main issue is that when i mess around with the lock-handle, it will often interfere and pull in the doorhandle, change the location and just act odd..
It is no problem the other way around. I have no problems using the doorhandle without it doing anything to the lock.. I have tried to make more space between the two handles, but it makes no real difference.
is there a way to rotate my whole drawing without actually selecting the objects in it. ? i.e to say, the drawing rotates itself according to my viewpoint [my eyes] and i dont have to rotate my neck to view the tilted objects in drawing.
What I want this block to do is to keep the "REF. NORTH" text aligned and properly spaced whithin a single motion while rotating it with the thick line.
I've got a client requesting a 3d view from an intersection. He wants to see the visibility of his store compared to a view vantage points that passengers would be at.
I don't need to create a drive pattern as of right now. He just wants stills of what a driver or passenger would see from a few requested points. I haven't used anything other than the object viewer to see my models in 3d.
I new to 3ds max and watched a bunch of tutorials, but I'm having trouble trying to do something simple like moving one box on top of another box.
For example, I created a table and now I want to create a lamp and put it on the table. Is there some way I can just move the lamp and have it snap to the surface of the table when it's near?
I have been using feature lines along buried utility locations to project these objects to section views. It works great. I created label styles, and It pops a vertical label on the section view that points toward the existing ground. I tried to use the same feature lines to project objects to profile views, and get very strange results. I do not get an option to select a label style, that field is blank, and on the profile view there is not a point where the alignment and the feature line crossed, but a line drawn all over the general area of the utility location. I have attached pdf examples of a sucessful section view and an unsuccessful profile view. I manually added the "EXISTING WATER" label so that it's easy to locate the line representing the water line.
I am using C3D 2012. I my drawing I have 3D solid objects that I want projected into my roadway x-sections. When I use the menu command to "project objects to section views" and select "solids" I get the message "no objects to project". Are their different types of solid objects in autocad?
Any way to move objects in vertical direction (z-axis) in 3d views, without having to turn the view everytime to be of frontal direction. I would like to move entire objects - for example mass objects - up or down directly in a 3d view of random orientation, now only top- or bottom face can be moved vertically, the whole object moves only on xy -plane. Can vertical movement of an object be done intuitively graphically and/or can it be be numerically, feeding coordinates?
Have tried all sources, but cannot find solution, and refuse to believe that Revit would be the only 3d/bim software on planet where direct vertical manipulation of objects is not possible.
I have projected objects to multiple section views (ProjectObjectsToMultiSect) but now I want to remove them all. How do I remove all of the projected objects?
I can select an individual section view and go to the Projections tab in the Section View Properties and uncheck the projections, but how do I do this for all the views at once.
Is it possible to map a grid of objects, say several small spheres, over the surface of a larger sphere?
For example, the smaller spheres would simply be arranged in a square grid, say 6 x 6, or 36 total spheres. Then I want to take that square pattern of spheres and map it to the surface of a larger sphere.

I'm having trouble modelling smoothed polygon objects in non-destructive ways, meaning editing the poly model often messes up the TurboSmooth applied to it. Example pic below.
Some tips or tricks to add details to objects in a better way? I know about adding details using separate floating objects, but it doesn't look very good close up.
I am looking for the same function in Maya that I use alot in 3DS. In 3DS, you can "Merge" (import) models from another scene (file) into your current one. It allows you to pick a single model from the imported scene to be imported into the current scene.
I know Maya has the import function but it seems to import all the objects. I just want to import a particular model.
Is this possible in maya?

I am having some difficulty getting objects to exactly align to another. When I zoom in as much as I can I see that the two objects edges are not exactly aligned to each other on one axis despite having the same co-ordinate values. I am working in meters unit value. I have tried going to millimeter unit setup but I still have the object aligning issue using what seems to be the finest level of movement - 3 millimeters per movement action.
I can't rotate anything in 3ds Max anymore. The only way I've found is to go via the hierarchy pivot box (left hand menu), which isn't much of a workaround.
The rotate gizmo appears, the pie slice appears, angle numbers change when I drag but nothing moves. Is there a quick way of resetting 3ds to defaults? I presume I've switched something on or off that I shouldn't have!
I can rotate merged objects, just not native ones. I grouped a lorry with a box (I wanted to put a logo on the box for the side of the lorry) - when I rotated the lorry, the box stayed put!
Being a transplant from AutoCAD I am used to using ctrl+1 to change the properties of selected objects. How is this done in 3DS? I would like to change depth of the cylinders...
