3ds Max :: CUDA Cores Not Being Used By IRay Renderer
Apr 25, 2011
I have a NVidea Quadro FX 1800 card. The NVidea Control Panel information shows 64 CUDA cores(screen grab attached). Yet the iRay message window shows 0 CUDA cores (screen grab attached).
how I can get the iRay Renderer to use the CUDA cores on my machine?

I understand that cubemaps are primarily used in realtime applications, like game engines, but is there a way to use a cubemap for reflections when using the scanline renderer? I loaded a cube map into the environment map slot, but you can see the black areas around the cross of the cube map in the reflections.
I also tried making a big inverted cube, and mapping the cube map to that. It sort of works, but the reflections aren't nearly as vivid as they were when I used the map as the environment. I disable cast & receive shadows on the cube. Not sure what the best way to go about this is.

Just bought a MBP Retina. Maxed out with everything they've got there at Apple. Here's a screen shot of what my preferences look like. Two things stand out: 1. the GPU option says "unsupported" and 2. of the 2GB of Usable Memory, I only am using 732 mb. I had all applications closed and and no external harware plugged in. how I can use more of my memory?

I recall reading an adobe post a while back that PS can run on Quadcore or more machines, but that it can only use 2 cores. The others don't really factor in. Now I can only find references to "Multiprocessor" usage, without stating whether that means 2, 4. or 8. Has anyone found specific info on this with regard to PSCS3?

I have been having this issue with autocad generated color PDF printouts having "fuzzy" fonts and some other black objects. What I have traced it to is that the PDF created by the stock Autodesk PDF ePlot renderer/driver is printing those fonts (and other things like lines with global width) in rich or enhanced black. 75,68,67,90 CMYK to be precise. When this is done without some sort of 100% K border (and sometimes even with) it leads to a blurring of the edges because the registration is never perfect. There is often even some ghosting due to the sheer amount of toner.
Some printer drivers have a way of forcing or selecting this "Enhanced Black" but I see nothing in the settings. I wonder if this can be externalized. It seems that at least fonts should almost never have this turned on.

If i like to resize (no transformation) my textarea in Photoshop CS3 on my Q6600 Quadcore I always get a font size of --21474836,, Px ... seems that there goes something wrong while calulating... But for what.. Text size should stay as is...
Also I get some strange image resizing errors... If I resize an image I get some kind of grid in it where are only transparent pixels... (changing transformation method to smooth solved the problem for now) What is wrong with PS ... Kind of strange things also happen in ID and Acrobat...?
Ok I thought it could be a float problem with my multicore so I opened the taskmanager and set Photoshop to only use CPU 2, 3 and 4... And everything seems to be ok...
Always setting the CPU cores in the taskmanager wouldn't be the best i can imagine.

I have a model, 3 meshes from realflow I've imported into 3ds to render. now, rendering with quicksilver is crazy stupid fast, it's awesome. But in my viewport, it can take as much as a minute to view the next frame in my animation. I read in the release notes for 2012: [URL] ..... that the Nitrous would use multiple cores for rendering the viewports, but, when I use taskmanager and look at what is being used, only one is being used to update the viewport. My meshes are averaging about 3 million faces each, for a total of about 9 million faces. I do realize that that is fairly huge, but I thought that 3dsmax could handle 20 to 25 million...I'll give you my pc specs as well. This is on my Desktop in my sig. I have tried the nitrous and direct3d drivers.

Is there a way to limit the number of cores which are used by MR during rendering ? I know that I can switch from multi-core to single-core rendering in max configuration but can I ask MR to use only 6 of the 8 cores available in my CPU ?
The purpose is to be able to use the same computer for other tasks waiting for MR rendering to complete (during some test rendering for example), because when all cores are used it's quite impossible to do something else on the same computer.

I have a GTX 590 and a Geforce 7600GT graphic card installed in my system. Now, in the Iray Render Dialog it says that "No supported cuda devices detected".
I know that the GTX 590 IS a cuda device and is also a multi-gpu so that it should find 2 cuda devices on my system.
Cuda is installed and I use the latest drivers from nvidia "296.10".

I have a 580GTX and I think that's a pretty powerful card. With Quadcore 3.6ghz... And iray will never ever stop rendering when set to unlimited? I thought that eventually, somehow it should stop when it calculates everything possible? But there is no progress bar. Despite leaving even a simple scene running for hours upon hours it still has some fuzzy grainy specs in certain parts of image though.

I've started playing with iray just to see how things should actually look so that I can compare it with MR renderings. The main error here is the dark shadows... Why they're so dark? Also interesting how mr has completely washed out the soffit of the walkway and notice how iray brings out the metallic qualities in the copper fascia.
Photographic exposure's used with a daylight system and MR image uses default GI and Draft FG.

So I finally made my own alpha map to simple shapes look like strands of hair. Only problem is when I use Iray and I learn that it won't render the alpha and I'm left with a render of the original shapes. Is there anyway to work around this?
I want to keep Iray, I can't give up that rendering power. But on the other hand I want to use hair without having to use anything that will eat at my computer's performance (so no hair and fur modifier or anything particle system unless it can be utilized easier)

I have VideoStudio Pro X5 Ultimate (full paid for version) but I am unable to select the 'Enable Hardware Encoder Acceleration' option under Preferences/Performance as the option is greyed out.
I have an nVidia GTX660 Ti 3GB made by EVGA. This has a CUDA based CPU and according to Corel's advertising, VS Pro X5 is designed for this chipset, and so I cannot understand why the option to enable it is not available.
Some comments from Corel support I found that this option isn't required for CUDA cards as they are enabled and used by default. However, I have just done a test render of a 1920x1080 AVI clip to MP4 using H.264 and monitored both my CPU (dual Xeon E5420) and GPU utilisation. The CPUs hit 90% whilst the GPUs sat there doing nothing at all other than basic screen rendering rather than any encoding. Corel's comments are incorrect.
Also, I have a support case open with Corel but TBH, I don't hold out much hope as their last response was "If the hardware acceleration options are greyed out, then your graphics card software is managing the hardware acceleration. Please check with Nvidia whether there is an option to disable this. If there is, then once it is disabled, the hardware accelerations option will become active again.". Now, I don't pretend to be an expert in these matters, but I was under the impression that the hardware was enabled and managed by the drivers, and those drivers also offered out the functions of the card to other software that required it (API?), such as VS Pro when it needs access to the hardware acceleration to encode video. Graphics rendering on games works fine without me having to disable any graphics card software so why doesn't VS Pro?
For info, my hardware / OS is as follows:
Dual Xeon E5420 CPUs at 2.5Ghz (8 cores in total)
16GB RAM
EVGA nVidia GTX 660 Ti 3GB (with 310.61 beta drivers but still same issue with 306.97 release drivers)
240 GB Kingston SSD
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate with SP1
How to get hardware acceleration enabled using a GTX 600 series card? Or any other card that initially had the option greyed out?
I know that some people say that CPU rendering gives better quality, but I have a few hundred hours of old VHS and Video 8 tapes to transfer to digital and burn to DVD so as the quality isn't great to start with, I'm not too concerned about a few artifacts if I can significantly reduce the rendering time.
If I can't resolve this issue then I am going to claim a refund under Corel's 30 day money back guarantee as the product doesn't perform as advertised. However, I'd prefer to get it working as I quite like it.

on my system Premiere Pro CC is only using GPU rendering with AVI output formats.
All other formats like MPEG2, Quicktime, H.264 are unfortunatly fully CPU rendered (=slow).
I just upgraded from trial to payed mode and when Premiere started the CUDA was already enabled (might have activated it during trial already).
But anyway I checked if my card was in the support txt file and also used the cuda.zip auto tool to make sure I had no typo.I did this for Premiere Pro CC and also copied the list into the Adobe Media Encoder directory.
So I started playing with input and output formats. It turned out that CUDA is currently only working with AVI output. I installed GPU-Z to check my GPU usage vs CPU usage in the task manager.
As soon as I pick any other output format than AVI - CPU usage during rendering is up to 80-90 and GPU at 0%.
With AVI output GPU ist around 30 and CPU in the 40ties or less as it should be.One of my old applications Cyberlink Power Produces 11 is doing the h264 rendering in half the time.
My System is running on:
Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe with 16GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti (with current Driver - 332.21 )
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit (with Media Center) and latest updates
Current entry in CUDA*.txt file (as printed by Adobe GPUSniffer):
GeForce GTX 660 Ti
And already tried:
GeForce GTX 660Ti
GeForce GTX 660

We have repeated crashing on a scene that uses Light Tracer... if we remove Light Tracer it doesn't crash the nodes. It's particularly annoying that our other nodes are 24 cores and they work fine.
So, the spec of the crashing nodes with 32 cores are AMD Opteron 6276 2.30 ghz 4 processors (8 cores each). 64GB RAM, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1.

I've a CPU with four cores and also enabled hyperthreading.
But if I do an import by Lightroom it uses at best 25 % of my overall CPU performance.
If it would start many low prio threads, it would speed up my import a lot, as I've import very often 2,000 up to 8,000 pictures.
In my case it could speed up the process by factor 4. And that would be great, as also an Intel i7 with 3.4 GHz has a lot of work to do, so the import of 2,000 images takes in my case perhaps 15 or 20 minutes. I did not watch the time.
Is there any chance, to tell Lightroom to use more threads and spread them over all the (virtual) CPUs?
