Revit :: Adding And Removing Wall Thickness In Existing And New Construction?
Aug 21, 2012
I have drawn an existing building thats needs a renovation. In the project i need to add 100mm insulation to the external side of the outer walls. Are there any way that i can add theese 100mm to my existing walls but only show the new 100mm in new construction ?

I have to draw a bulkhead wall that connects to a full height wall and a gyp bd ceiling. This causes the entire end of the full height wall to skew in line with the butt joint above the ceiling level. I tried Wall Joins but all the options screw up the bottom half of the wall which needs to remain in line with the paired opposite. I also tried editing the sketch of the wall profile but Revit couldn't keep the elements joined. I tried trimming the two walls back together afterwards but the wall profile dominates and prevents a clean join above the ceiling.
Surely there's a way to have different kinds of joins at different heights?

I'm trying to use a formula in a family that requires the host wall thickness.
I've setup an instance reporting parameter (dimensioned to the host wall faces) - which works fine in reporting the correct value.
But when I try to use that variable in a formula, I keep getting the error:
"Instance Parameters can't be used in Type Parameter formulas."
Is there a way of getting the reported dimension as a Type rather than an Instance - or is there another work around ?

I have a question about wall profiles. I want to make a profile on a wall so I can make Zinc Panels on the wall that are 10" X 20". I've attached a picture of what I'm going for. I'd like it to have a 1/2" spacing between them and with a joint depth of 1" and I'd like to do this is the wall type so that I can use this wall in multiple places rather than having it model-in-place. Anyway I have made a profile that is 1" X 10" so that it can become my panel profile. But when I go to add it to the wall as a wall sweep as I have seen people do I get hung up on how to make it tile up the wall and also I don't understand how to make the profile so that it is 20" wide. I have a screen shot of where I'm editing this too. Below is the link of the site.

The only door I can find to insert into a glass curtain wall is a simple glass single door with a handle. I know this is a very particular thing and any door won't work. My door needs to have stiles and rails like most doors in storefronts or curtain walls. How do I create a type with these features? Do I need to create a family from scratch?

The 2013 .NET API exposes just 10 of the 22 PartDataFields for Pipe objects. WTh (Wall thickness) is not one of them so I'm attempting to get it via Late Binding. This lisp code works, where (vl-sel) is just a helper function to select an object and convert it to a vla-object:
(setq pdr (vlax-get (vl-sel) 'partdatarecord))(setq itm (vlax-invoke pdr 'find "WTh"))
to get the PartDataField. However, putting this into my C# code, it fails on the Find portion with an exception
//ps is a valid PartSize objectPartDataRecord pdr = ps.SizeDataRecord;PartDataField diafld = pdr.GetDataFieldBy(PartContextType.PipeInnerDiameter);object[] args = new object[1];
object acadobj = ps.AcadObject;
object pdrobj = acadobj.GetType().InvokeMember("PartDataRecord", System.Reflection.BindingFlags.GetProperty, null, acadobj, null);
args[0] = "WTh";
[code]....

I am experiencing a problem in 2013. In part builder, I am trying to add wall thicknesses to the simple cylinder. I was able to add options for inside diameter and set floor thickness to a list and add options for that, but when I try to set wall thickness to list instead of constant, I get an error in the value menu.
Everything disappears and in red at the bottom, I get a message about an error in calculations. I even tried temporarily deleting the With from any calculations, but I still got the error. I have had no problems doing this in 2011 or 2009.

are there any other analysis tools available to find the minimum internal wall thickness in a part? I'm aware of the cross-section tool, but that only analyzes an area the user has already noticed. In a prismatic part with several cross-holes and features (cavities), it could be easy to miss a thin spot that could give up under internal pressure just by 'eyeballing' the part with Hidden Edges turned on.
I guess I could try the 'unground and move the part thru a sectional plane' trick, but I think it would be too haphazard, especially if the weak point is not thru a principal plane.
Is there a tool I'm missing or maybe something that has been added in newer releases? Maybe this is too much analysis to ask of a modeling package.

I made a pipe network in one drawing, d-reffed it to another, drew parts in profile.
Then I realised that I needed to show the outside walls of some pipes in profile. We don't normally display them. And I found that the wall thickness was wrong. I eventually figured out how to edit the wall thickness, and I have it working right in the source drawing. (I had to swap parts to get it to update.) But the host drawing is not updating.
So if I go to pipe properties in the source drawing, it gives a wall thickness of 165mm (correct). If I go to the same pipe in the host drawing, and go the the pipe properties, the wall thickness is 75mm (wrong).
how to trigger an update? I've swapped parts back and forth to different sizes, synchronized, SetNetworkCatalog and done PartCatalogRegen in both drawings.
For background, read Edit wall thickness.

Any way to get a wall sweep that's set up in the type/structure properties to follow a wall if that walls profile has changed. For example, in the image below, I've split the wall and adjusted it's profile to create some cheesy angled parapet. How do i get my wall cap to follow along? I thought splitting it and changing it's height would work, but no. And if I change the profile without splitting the wall the wall cap just runs right through the wall, as if the profiel was never even changed.

When I try to change the length of a wall it grows at both end. How to grow at one end only?
When I change the wall type to one with a different thickness, I cannot control which face of the wall remains fixed and which face moves. eg: change from 130mm to 250mm screws up my room width. How do I do this?

I am trying to make a floorplan of my house in Revit 2013, but I am having an issue when it comes to one wall in my house. I have an opening in the Master Bedroom that leads to the bathroom. This wall has a weird arched-like opening in it and I have no clue how to make this in Revit. I have attached a sketch.
Also, my exterior walls are 7' tall but the interior walls start at 7' and go up to 8' once in the middle of the house and reduce back to 7". How does one set that up in Revit?
EDIT: May have made the image too small to see, but the top is not arched, it is actually half of a decagon.

I'm making a graphic work (it's for my kid's yearbook), and I'm struggling to achieve an effect.
Here's the deal:
The attached file is an image in which I try to represent the text and graphics as if they were painted in a wood plank. I'm pleased with the effect on the surface of the plank, but I wanted to give the plank some thickness, to make it seem more like a 3d plank. That thickness effect is what has been tormenting me.

I basically projected honeycomb pattern on to the skin of the addition on the existing building from CAD, then god ALOT of splines.It was very laggy and slow, but I got both the splines and the skin imported in max.
I was trying to render it, but it kept giving me an error message. I can't even do preview of this thing because as soon as i check the 'view in the viewport' checkbox, it gives me the exact same message and closes max.I have to render this with some thickness... AND bunch of other stuff together within the same render.The file size is 17mb, and it has one layer for the skin another layer for the entire splines.

Using Revit Arch to draw/sketch construction docs in 2D, not utilizing the BIM or 3D capabilities? We are a mechanical firm and one of our clients recently told us that they have not renewed their AutoCAD license, are using Revit ONLY and they would like us to sketch our mechanical design in Revit as well, again... not in 3D, but 2D.
