Oct 20, 2012I accidentally saved my PS file with merged layers, then quit. I can't believe I did that! Is there any way to reverse it?

Nov 21, 2012I downloaded CS6 for the MAC and have been using it fine, come to use Photoshop 6 on my PC upstairs and a PDF which has been saved now opens on the PC but as one layer not the 20 layers that it is built up from.

Apr 23, 2012I exported a project as a pdf by clicking Save As under the file menu, then I saved the original psd by choosing Save As again and selecting PSD this time. When I came back to the project today all the layers had been merged into one. I _never_ merged them myself. Is there any way I can recover all that work or have I been hosed by this "feature"?

Oct 19, 2013I am unable to save a completed project as a jpg file even after carefully merging the layers. The only way I can do that appears to be to use Save for Web - and I do not want to compress the images as web images. Also, in Elements 9 I could open a PSE file in layers and continue to edit - in 12 I cannot do that. I'm really very discouraged and wish I had my Elements 9 back.

Dec 14, 2012I like to keep my layers carefully named. I often create new layers over existing ones to build up effects and paint in details. When I merge these layers, Photoshop always assigns the new merged composite layer the name of whatever the topmost layer was. I would much prefer it to default to naming the new layer whatever the bottom layer was called. I'm using CS5.5.

I might start with my assets in a file, with layer names like: Model, Field, Product, Logo, etc... Then add effects on layers called, Shading, Highlight, Package Detail, Lettering, etc... over each original layer. When merged, instead of being named the more-appropriate names, it will of course use the top layer names and I end up with my layers called "Shading, Highlight, Package Detail, Lettering. It's made much worse when I duplicate effects to modify and apply to multiple layers, then merge, leaving me with a file with layer names "Highlight, Highlight Copy 1, Highlight Copy 2, etc..." Renaming to my original layer names is very tedious as a result.

I know the Alt/Ctrl/Shft/E shortcut, but this requires turning evertything off except the layers to be merged. In a large doc with some layers already turned off, turning everything on and off quickly is not always straight forward.
Is there a way of merging linked layers perhaps?

May 2, 2012I have a capstone lab project due tomorrow for my graphic arts class and I made a HUGE mistake!!! I created an image using 20 something layers and did SAVE AS as a .xcf image (with all layers open). Part of the project was to save in different formats: .xcf (with open layers), a .png, and a .jpeg (optimized). So, I did the first save and then flattened the image to SAVE AS a .png with a different file name.
Long story short, I was tired and had way too many images open at once. When I was closing all of the images I accidentally saved the changes (flatten image) to my original .xcf (with open layers)!!!! Now, my .xcf that is supposed to have open layers only has one layer...the finished project!! I tried going to the file properties to restore a previous version, but it says that no previous versions were found! I also downloaded a norton "unerase" utility, but maybe I am not scanning properly to locate the file!?!

Feb 9, 2014I download an image of the net of a dog with a .png transparent background. open in paint it's showing the transparency which is great, now say i make another image (not a layer) of 400px, by 400px, and fill it white, I'm so used to in photoshop just dragging transparency masks/layers from one image directly into a new image,

I've tried everything in paint.net even tried making a new layer, filling that white, bringing the transparency image to the front. so the white layer is behind the transparency one, then copy/cut to the new image with a filled in "white" background.

but all that copies across is the transparency layer, unlike Photoshop there's no copy merged, move merged option. so how do you get to cut/move a bunch of layers as 1 into a new image either by drag and drop, or cut and paste?

Everytime I export a PSD from my Illustrator CS5 file, it wants to merge the last few layers together! If you look at the pics, there is nothing special, or different about the layers that get merged (the last 3 in the layer order on the pics). I've tried even putting a blank layer in between to see if it would just merge that, but then it'll merge the last 3 layers, along with any blank spacers I've put in!

Ctrl + Alt + Shift + E — You’ll get a new layer at the top of the layer stack containing a merged representation of all visible layers (handy for sharpening adjustments, etc.).
I tried this in PSP X3 and it doesn't work. Does it even possible to do this in PSP? I know how to merge all the layers in PSP but all the merged layers then disappear. The Photoshop feature keeps all the visible layers and merges them into a combined merged visible layer.

Mar 12, 2013When a raw file badge shows that the file has been changed, I use Metadata Save to File & for the large majority of my images, the badge goes away and Metadata Status Changed does not show the file. For some of my files, however, the Save to File command doesn't work properly. If I am only displaying files with changes, the file briefly disappears, then returns. Even if I go to Windows Explorer and delete the xmp file, then again Save metadata to file, it pops up again with the badge saying it needs to be saved. I'm using Lightroom 4.3 64 bit on Windows 7.

I finished, saved my front and back as a .pdf everything is good. When I save the document as .psd again and close the file, the next time I reopen, it has 0 layers, everything is flattened. I've never had this happen before and am scared to close down the file I am working on for fear that it might not return.

I had this happen once already earlier today on a seperate business card. I knew I saved my final copy as a .psd and when I opened that .psd up again to find that there were no layers, but one flattened image. Is my PS corrupted? Or did I miss a simple check box somewhere?

This is the original document I'm working on. I saved 2 .pdf files from this .psd...For Good measure I save the .psd above as a "test" and then open it up in another window. Notice how the thumbnail has a curved triangle shape. Also the file size is only like 9 mb...very small for my normal size
Ok, so I open it up, and this is what I see. One flattened picture. No layer masks, layers...anything.

May 6, 2013I frequently save layouts I do in Photoshop as PDF's. Lately I very often will discover the text does not display correctly in the PDF. One or two lines of text will display as white with a thin black outline, rather than as the basic solid black I'd specified.

I work on a Windows 7 machine with the current version of PS. The text is on layers when I save the file to PDF (from PS), but I do not include the layers in the PDF, so they should be flattening down.

I noticed a few weeks ago when it was also doing this that I updated the program a day later and the PDF's were not exhibiting this issue. But, now it's starting again.

Jun 4, 2013I have a client who insists on receiving final files as PDFs saved as Illustrator Default with Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities ticked. This wasn't an issue until I upgraded to cs6. In cs6 I'm saving the native file as cs5, and then saving as PDF with the following options:

The client is able to open the PDF in cs5 but the layers are all flattened into a single layer. Is there way to Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities for any version other than cs6?

Jan 8, 2013I've been working on a certificate and i saved it without looking at the file type. For some reason it set the file type to (.5). What is that? Is there any way I can open it again in CS5? Is there a file converter I could use. I just need to basically open the file agian in CS5 so I can continue to edit the certificate. I have tried opening the file with CS5 and CS6 and I get this message:

Jul 31, 2009I'm running Windows Vista 64. I create a project in Photoshop CS. I save it. The file is stored in this path: C/Program Files x86/Adobe/Photoshop CS. If Photoshop is running and I click on Open, then navigate to this location the file appears and will open. However, if I try to navigate to the file by starting with My Computer and going to the exact same location as specified above the file does not appear. I've tried searching for it via Search, going through my entire computer and got nothing. And worse, sometimes I will Save a file in Photoshop and then go back to it a few days later and it is not there. I think the problem is where Photoshop actually saves the file. My 1st scratch disk is set to Startup. What does this mean? Is this dictating where Photoshop is saving the actual file?

I believe that I understood that metadata for .png format isn't supported, but I thought that .gif was. (Test case is easy: open .gif file, add a Title and Description, save, and re-open - information is gone).

Apr 15, 2006I worked for quite some time on a design in Photoshop CS, and I saved the file as: "End Of The World 1.0.psp"...
Now it says that it's an unknown file and I can't open it (because I wasn't thinking and put the "1.0" in the name). Is there ANY way that I can open this file in Photoshop? I really don't want to do the whole thing over again.

A few minutes later I wanted to open it but to my big surprise there were no Photoshop file . There was only a thing that says it`s type is file but I can`t open it in Photoshop . Then when you flatten it or try to run filters and then save, it completely edits it and smashes everything together.
