Photoshop :: How To Avoid Jagged Lines?
Feb 24, 2003
I am designing a site that uses a lot of irregular shapes, but cant seem to get angled lines to show up smooth. They are coming out very jagged. Any idea how to smooth the lines out? Tips for Photoshop or Illustrator would be great. Thanks!
BTW I don't just want 45 degree angles, but all kinds of various angles.

Re: 2D circle jagged lines, 3D model hidden jagged lines. How do i get smooth lines?
How do i get rid of jagged lines?
Circles and diagonal lines look rubbish when i am in hidden view which i use for simple 3d black / white (i think this is the best way?).
I have tried:
- viewres (1000, 5000, 10000, 20000 sightly better)
- regen
See examples.

I created a path with Curves with the pen tool.filled it in with a color light blue.than I use the paint bucket to change it to dark blue. This is when the curved lines become jagged, not smooth, uneven.

When you create shapes that fits together, there appeares a thin line that also shows when you make a jpeg from it. I'm a vector contributor at iStock and making a preview jpg with all those white lines looks really ugly (see attachment).
Here is a simple solution. Copy your shapes on top of each other and the lines are gone. This way your work stays 100% vector. For work that hasn't to be 100% vector, you could make a bitmap copy and place it under your vector image.

We work in a packaging environment using MAC OS 10.6.8 using Illustrator CS6.
In order to ouput Illustrator files correctly through a RIP, we expand all effects (shadow, glows, etc) before converting them to a Hi Resolution PDF to impose for output.
What we have started to see is lines starting to show up on the PDFs (and the Printing Plates too) where the bounding box of the effect used to be. We have seen lines show up in earler versions of Illustrator but not to the number or thickness they seem to be in CS6.
Â
Is there any way to avoid these lines from showing up (and being printed)?Â

Setup: Windows 7, CS5, CIntiq 24HD
Â
I just bought a Cintiq 24HD and tested it in Photoshop CS5. Unfortunately the lines are jagged. (I'm using the brushtool and on my wacom intous 3 everything was fine.) This only appears in PS, Painttool Sai is fine and has great line quality.
Â
At first I thought it might be the second monitor, as this was mentioned in forums, but I moved and unplugged it and nothing happend. I tried other solutions as well like unabeling windows tablet components etc.

Lines are very very jagged, the picture just looks bad. Viewres is at 20000. Why lines are not smooth?

My 2013 AutoCADÂ file needs to "regen" after just scrolling in and out once. I can't do anything because the lines are disconnected and jagged all of a sudden. This started a few hours ago after I drew a spiral staircase and blocked it. I noticed the lines were all of a sudden not connecting while drawing the stairs though. Is there a command that I might have accidently typed to change some type of format? or unit set up? I have been working on this file since September and this problem has never occured. The lines look fine from far away, but when you zoom in there's a clear separation. My snaps are on and they seem to be aligning when I click, but when you zoom in they're not touching at all. I've been googling for soooo long and can't find an answer. My units are 1/8" (Architectural) and when I check the dimension between the two lines it says it's 0".

I've been using GIMP for a few years (at beginner skill level). Ok, so I want to take this image (1st pic) and resize it to print on a tshirt. I downloaded the upsize plugin and upsized it. Thing is, it's now got jagged lines all over the place (2nd pic)
I've tried:
1. selection to path, then use stroke
2. blur image, then use curves from the colours menu
3. using the magic selection tool with feathering
none of these got it right.

I asked a question a couple days ago regarding the effects of old style print. Although, I know a lot of it is done manually, I was wondering if it could also be done digitally in either Illustrator or Photoshop.
Â
In Illustrator I created 10 brush strokes from a jagged pattern found in a vintage element to represent the scratch board or printing effect. In Photoshop you can kind of create the effect from switching to a Bitmap mode.
Â
However, Photoshop is a pain to bend the halftone lines to fit the curves and they are all evenly spaced. Illustrator works better for laying ou the lines based on the tonal value, but using a brush for the strokes becomes a little distorted.
Â
How to achieve the jagged edge effect show in this very simple image? The edges and lines are not all the same so I don't want to use the ripple tool in PS and the wrinkle Tool makes them too ragged.
Â
I find it hard to believe this style is only accomplished through scratch board or printing techniques. Even traditional pen and ink doesn't really work like this. I find way too many images, free ones too, like the one below to have it be only done with scratch board.

This image appears to have jagged edges on all of the paths. I created outlines for the text and converted strokes to path, but i can not seem to figure out how to make the image's path edges appear smooth.  The image above is a png file but the image still appears this way when i view the ai version in illustrator.Â

I'm in a drawing file and I have some straight lines that when I'm a little zoomed out they look all jagged, but as I us my mouse scroll wheel to zoom in, the closer in I zoom the jagged line segment start to come together into one continuous line again.
Not all lines look jagged just some.
is there a setvar for this or a video card setting or something?

When I drag out a circle, or use the node to curve the corners of a rectangle, the line isn't smooth. It looks like it's slightly jagged.
I'm trying to create a drawing which features the rounded edge of a playing card, with no luck. It simply doesn't look good.

Why is it sometimes a clipping mask produces jagged lines? IÂ know if there's a dark background and a light one sitting on top of it, then this happens. is there a solution to clearing this out when applying a mask?? You can see in the screenshot I've circled where you see the jagged lines and in the layers palette you can see the clipping mask object.

I am wondering if it is normal for the lines to be jagged. Vertical and horizontal lines are straight but the angular ones are jagged, Stair step looking whatever you would call it. It makes the stuff I draw look like (edited) .Especially the low angle stuff.

I'm using Photoshop 6, ancient. One job I use it for is to edit .png files that were created in X-Plane's (flight simulator) "Plane Maker" tool. When I open the .png file in Photoshop, the colors invariably look faded when compared with the original. If I edit the file and save it, I end up with colors that are not anything like the original.
Â
Below are examples. Notice the first, a screen grab from Plane Maker, has deeper colors than the second, a screen grab from Photoshop. Are there any settings that can be made in Photoshop to avoid this color shift? If not, I suppose I will just have to fiddle with the contrast and brightness settings.

I am having issue with smoothing my GIF images so that they do not display as jagged in my flash movies.
I am developing them in freehand and then web preping them in photoshop by maximising the colours to ensure high quality display - not worried about movie size right now (i just want to find the fine end of the graphic spectrum).
I am applying the following settings on saving for web: GIF selective, diffusion 256 colours and so on, following all the correct properties and my images (particularily lines and edges) are coming out jagged and pixelated. I have tried gaussian blur but this kills my image clarity and then they just look too soft.

When I select a font for the type tool in CS6, there's a list of about 200 fonts - half of which are foreign-language fonts, which I really don't need to see. Is there any way I can remove these from the list of fonts visible in the type tool without deleting them from the system? I don't want to delete them entirely, because I gather that Microsoft's cross-referencing system for font styles needs them. And who knows, one day I might actually need a 14th-century Mongolian font!
Â
It must be possible, because other programs (such as Microsoft Word, and the Visual Studio programming environment) on the same system don't show all the non-European fonts.

In CS6, when I drag a picture into my ps file, it gets converted into a smart object. If the pic happens to be something like a png or jpg, and i add some adjustment layers or so, PS wants me to save it again (on the hard drive) before I can close it.

I always used to have my images opened as 'floating' documents. Since I'm using CS4, PS always opens new images 'tabbed', and I have to drag them out of there manually to get a floating window. Is there a way to prevent this? I noticed the 'Open Document as Tabs' setting in the Interface Preferences, but that doesn't seem to do the trick (either enabled or disabled, PS keeps doing it).

I want to use Photoshop CS6 on a Multi - monitor setup, using iGPU multi-monitor + GPU system for 4 monitors.
Â
Preiously, I used Photoshop on a Multi - monitor setup without useing iGPU multi-monitor.And, Photoshop worked well.
Â
However, when I wanted to use 1 more monitor, my GPU supports only 3 monitors. Then, I enabled iGPU multi-monitor function. It supports 2 more monitors.
Â
At first, It worked. But, after I use "Free transform", "Transform"Â or something like these tools, Photoshop hang up!

I installed both PS CC and BR CC for a second time and received and installed the first updates for CR 8.1 but still I cannot open PS CC without it closing on me immediately again. And when I try to open any photo in PS CC from Bridge CC I get asked if I want to save that file before I close PS CC. With no alternative to do anything else.

I have eraser tool trimmed all round an item I wish to take out to another photo, so lets say I have a car, round its edge is now an 8 pixel border of transparency, car within, road scene outside, I click the car and get parts of the picture both sides of the erased border , I just want all of the car, or alternatively I click outside the erased border and get bits of the road scene but also bits of the car.
Â
I have tried contiguous on and off, select all layers on and off, different wand tolerances, various combinations,...have I overlooked one that I can wand the road scene and it will select all of it up to the gap around the car ? I can then expand selection a couple of pixels and delete out the road scene.
Â
So far I am left with carefully picking my way around the middle of the border with the straight line selection tool and erasing chunks away that way. Having taken ages to go round the edge of a complex shape , to have no option but to repeat the path with the stright line tool is a pain. I use a variety of brush sizes/settings and quickmask mode to initially select out the item. I should have used the lassoo tool then inverted selection, it doesnt allow for a variety of hardness in one selection and you cant sew what exactly you have got, unlike a pink edge.
Â
Its simple stuff like this that I hope Pshop after many years would have a tool for, as well as all the luxuries/gimmicks.

OK, I have this jpeg that I brought into PS. Picture a white square with a red ball in the center. Now you want to get rid of the white background and make it transparent. Simple, right? You delete the white, save and that should be it. When I then bring the art into Illustrator on a colored page, the white is still there. If I place the psd file its not....jpeg it is. I've done this a zillion times! What happened?*
