Paint.NET :: Colouring In Pencil Sketch - Alpha Mask / Isolate Lineart
Jul 16, 2011
I need a tutoral for colouring in my pencil sketch, and I've already used Alpha Mask/Isolate Lineart on it. The problem is I don't know how to colour it in. I googled, but the results are pretty much all about Photoshop..

In any case, I have a drawing I did with a pencil, and then I scanned it. Now, I want to scan it, and then paint over it. I have figured out how to paint over the scan, but I am not producing the result I want.
I have attached my scanned image, and the painting. My issue is, I want to have a digital feel to my painting; that is, I want to get rid of the penciling. I am wondering how to accomplish this. I am hoping that I won't have to manually ink the picture.
Here is the "feel" I am going for [URL] ....

to make the text image in the attached file. I want to apply a bevel to the text now that I have alpha masked it to get the gradient effect. But the bevel tool is treating the entire image (not just the text) as my selected object.Â
Â
When I get done with the alpha mask, how do I get the text only as my selected object so that the bevel tool will apply the bevel to only the text?
Â
I'm trying to get the text effect in this link: [URL] or something close to it. A previous post asked the same thing but the only answers he got was how to make it look gold, not how to do all the beveling, textures, sparkles, etc. For now though, all I'm wanting to do is achieve the bevel effect before I move on.
edit: the weird thing is, I can use the outline tool and it will apply only to the text. but when i use the bevel tool, it applies to the outer edges of the canvas.

Would you like to draw a pencil sketch? You are not good at drawing? Well, it doesn’t matter,
Step 1: Open your image in Photoshop, Choose Image->Adjustment->Desaturate (or Ctrl+Shift+U by default) to make the photo to black-and-white.
Step 2: Click Layer-> Duplicate Layer, duplicate the background as background copy.
Step 3: Use Image->Adjustment->Invert (or Ctrl+I by default), then the image will look like a negative.
Step 4: From the layer palette, set the blending options as Color Dodge.
Step 5: Choose Filter->Blur->Guassian Blur, set the radius 4 pixels.
Step 6: Don’t forget to merge the layer at last. So, everything is done!

My buddy(tattoo artist) has a pencil drawing that he wants cleaned up, and printed for a tattoo.
Other than all the manual goodies are there any quicker methods? He has a big ol stack of drawings and I dont want to work on them all if I have to do everything touch up here and touch up there.

I have an images and I want some part of this image and it is difficult to use marquee tool for that selection. So I want to know about alpha masking. I heard it is for complex selection.

I want to have an image file on layers one and two and then have the text on layer three. I want the image of layer two to be in the text of layer three but I can not get this effect to work. As of now I am typing the text on layer three an merging it with the image on layer two. I then apply the layer mask and use the magic wand tool in the text.I know there has got to be a better way.
Can I use an image texture for my text?
I have PhotoShop CS2

I did a search for this, but couldn't find anything. If there is something, please feel free to send me in that direction. I use Photoshop a lot for my 3D work. Usually, when I render an image sequence out, I have the mask saved in the alpha channel. Unfortunately, ZBrush doesn't allow me to do that, and instead saves the mask out as a separate image. I need to add the alpha mask to the color plate file. Is there any way to do this with batch processing?

I am using Photo Paint 9 to edit photos I took of some watercolors I did. Many of the photos are of a single animal on a white background (similar to the California state flag). When I printed many of these out they  had a greenish tint (not a printer problem) so I went to Image--Adjust--Color Balance.... I adjusted the cursor on the Magenta/Green bar to -15 (towards Magenta) and hit ok. The problem is, now when I print, the image is ok but the background which I want to be pure white now has a pinkish (magenta?) tint to it.
Is there any way to isolate the image and get the background pure white again? Â

when I added a layer mask to a layer, it would display in the palette as the alpha channel, which was very handy. Now, when I add a layer mask, it only appears as the mask icon; i.e., gray square with white circle in the middle. I have no clue what I did to change from the one to the other, but I would certainly like to get the alpha representation back!

I'm often creating pixelart pics with transparent background using Pencil.. if as a secondary color would be an eraser (left click = drawing, right click = erasing). Is there such thing possible?
I can set some color and using Magic Wand (0 % tolerance) remove it or switching between pencil and eraser by keyboard, but - you know :) it's not so fast 'n' convenient. I tried to search for it here, but I guess I don't have correct keywords..

Exactly what the title says, how do I change the Pencil tool to a desired pixel size? I've been using Paint.net for a while and I haven't noticed that the Pencil tool is fixed at 1 pixel.
Â
Also, is there a way to dock the floating panel (Colors, Tools), maybe put them below the Menu bar and accessible via dropdown button?

I switched from MSPaint over to Paint.NET at the behest of members of my main forum, alternatehistory.com, as they find it much easier to use when editing maps.
One feature that MSPaint has that Paint.NET doesn't that would make it extremely convenient is the ability to use the pencil tool to draw short straight lines in any of the 8 main directions by holding SHIFT when drawing. While it is fairly easy to assign hotkeys on MSPaint and while Paint.NET already has them for pencil/line tools, it is often more convenient to be able to do seamlessly, especially when I'm editing many lines at once (like coasts and whanot).
I checked through the first 20 pages or so in this board and didn't find anything similar.

Does it exist? If not, why not? I discovered it in SAI and it's amazing how easily one could draw smooth curves with the brush/pencil without a need to mess with vectors but SAI is seriously lacking in many basic things that Paint.net has (i couldn't even change the size of a cut/pasted object). It would be perfect if Paint.net had it.

(CS3) I have a raster layer that has some semi-transparent pixels.
I'd like to make the layer itself fully opaque, and move the contents of its alpha channel into a layer mask.
(If possible, merging the alpha channel with what I have already placed into the layer mask.)

I've been using Photoshop CS5 for years now and never had any trouble with my lineart. I use an Intuos 4 tablet. This is what my lines used to look like last time I used Photoshop. Always on a 1 px round brush with the following settings:
Now, all of a sudden, my lineart looks pixelated. I am using the exact same settings and even tried updating my drivers, it has not been fixed. It's causing me insane amounts of stress since this is what I do for a living and the decrease in lineart quality is really taking a hit on my work.This is what they look like now..

I'd love to color linearts with GIMP. But I have few problems. Actually only one. First my problem was that I was only allowed to use black/grey colors (so gotta change the photo as a RGB mode). Now I have new problem. You see, I've made few layers (layers for background, lineart, colors..) but when I'm trying to color the lineart (and I'm "in color layer") any of that color isn't showing?
I made the color layer as transparent. I don't know is the "lineart layer" transparent, but haven't seen a button where I could change its mode.

Is there any hint that GimP brush can behave like this: (for digital lineart purpose)
At the left I manually draw the line by using GimP, and at the right is MyPaint ramon/delayed ink/brush, but the problem is this ramon/delayed brush in MyPaint (for me) is too responsive.
I know Photoshop brush could do like this, but I don't use PhotoShop again after using GimP and never look back. =)
I have both GimPainter and Gimp 2.8 . I've try the Ink tool on both GimP, but it isn't what I wanted... I want Gimp Brush to behave like this.
I could paint this [URL]......using GimPainter, but I am suck at making digital lineart... (+_-)

In PSP 8 I made a circular white clock face with black numerals on green background. I then saved it as a PNG, specifying the green as the transparent colour and specifying alpha channel.
It worked OK when viewed in my video editor, i.e. the green was transparent. But on opening it in PSP 8 I expected to see it displayed with the familiar chequer board background, yet it was a solid white.
So among many other PNGs it's impossible to tell that it does have a transparent area. Is this also the case in less ancient versions? What about other image editors - do they all have this weakness?

It's not really related to Paint.NET usage, but how it calculate the resulting color:
Â
For example I make red background, call it C1:
Â
RGBA = 255, 0, 0, 255
Â
Then I place a yellow pixel, call it C2:
Â
RGBA: 220, 216, 0, 200
Â
Then I use the Color Picker tool on this pixel, I get C3:
Â
RGBA:Â 227, 169, 0, 255Â
Â
I already know how to calculate R, G, and B of C3
Â
R = ( (C2.A / 255) * C2.R ) + ( (1 - (C2.A / 255)) * C1.R ) = 227
G = ( (C2.A / 255) * C2.G ) + ( (1 - (C2.A / 255)) * C1.G ) = 169
B = ( (C2.A / 255) * C2.B ) + ( (1 - (C2.A / 255)) * C1.B ) = 0Â
Â
But for the Alpha channel, it is different and I can't find how to calculate it!

Is paint.net v4.0 still promising color and alpha channel editing / masking?
Â
I'm sure I read this in the roadmap feature list years ago, though I can't find the place to reference it. In fact this is my favorite anticipated feature for which I've been checking paint.net every month for the last five years!
Â
I eagerly downloaded the 4.0alpha but see no sign of color channels to go with layers
