Maya Modeling :: Give Shell Thickness Without Extruding
Mar 27, 2012
I am converting over from Softimage (which I love, but is Windows only) to Maya for OSX. Is there an equivalent in Maya to the new thickness tool available in Softimage 2012 SAP? For instance, if one creates a sphere polygonal object in Maya and slices it, is there a way to give the shell a thickness (like creating a bowl) other than just extruding?

I would like to design the table from the image. I am having some problems giving thickness to the snail shell. I extruded it (wasn't that pleased with the result but... it was better than nothing) and tried to smooth it. The result was a horror because there were to many edges and maya took them as a height difference.
My question is:
1. How can i make the thickness better, without all the holes? (can i create edges between vertices)
2. How can i smooth the poly without making it look like a shell covered inside with spikes.

I have a simple question about extruding. I want to extrude a simple plane and want to keep the bottom side of this plane open. In short I don't want a thickness effect. Maya keeps closing the bottom side of the plane and build a cube.
How can I do this in Maya,

so this is the most annoying thing ever. I have a subdiv. i turned it to a poly (to get rid of the bloody shell in render view, i dont even know why its showing) when i did this previously, the shell went away when it became a poly, now its not. I'm new to how subdiv's work so am i missing something?

I'm currently working on a model and there are a few faces that need extruding. Whenever I go to extrude them rather than just adding to the face it simply takes the face moves it back (or forward) and adds sides to it, so rather than being a solid extrude it's a concave area.

I am currently using Maya 2012 Student Version and am having trouble when extruding edges. When I click 'extrude' many of my polys disappear. I will attach some screen shots.

I am having a problem with extruding faces on polygons and then smoothing them. Maya does not seem to want to keep my faces together, and instead, splits them up.
I extrude without smoothing and it looks fine, but after smoothing, everything splits up.

I'm pretty sure that 'Keep faces together' when extruding does not work correctly in 2012. Well not on my mac anyhow. If you wish to replicate my problem here is my workflow-
Create cube poly > make some subdivisions> select some faces> extrude with 'keep faces together" unchecked> Select a face and use move tool, notice that faces will move apart as they should> Now select some more faces> extrude with 'keep faces together' checked this time> select a face and use move tool> notice how face is still separate as it SHOULD NOT be.

I have a blade housing that requires a continuos radius around the profile. It is not a full radius. When I shell the blade, it looks like the raidius wants to continue. I was told I had to use two fillets and the particial radius will not work. However, the continuous radious in the customers requirement. Is there a way to shell this part correctly?

Is there any option to convert "Circle" to polyline and give thickness.
Usually i draw a circle and use polyline command and use " arc " to give thickness to the circle.
I know that it's not the proper way.
I want to use this thick circle for making viewport.

I'm rigging my first character in Maya 2011 using Advanced Skeleton.
It has a hard shell breast plate, so I'm a bit worried about how to keep the body from penetrating the shell.
Any tips for a neophyte when using Advanced Skeleton - or any issues that are obvious when using my model?
Also, I'm going to be applying some motion capture in Motion Builder as well as animating by hand, so ... any comments
BTW - another thing I'm worried about is getting the non t-pose character rigged. This is how the artist gave it to me, and I know that MotionBuilder wants a t-pose. Hopefully, I can rig it in AdvancedSkeleton - and use that to get to a t-pose. But ... I'm not exactly sure of the best way?

I am trying to apply shell modifier on a custom made spline (shown as 1 in image). But as soon as I click on shell modifier the spline disappears. I dont understand what is happening because I applied shell modifier on a similar custom made spline and it work properly previously (shown as 2 in image).

I'm trying to animate a simple character's neck growing along a bendy curve. The head and shoulders need to be fixed at either end of the curve. It would be great if I could avoid ugly texture stretching too.

Currently, I'm trying to get through the following lesson: [URL]........
My problem: I'm at the part where I need to make windows, this, by extruding selected subdivisions inwards, using the z axis. The problem is that the selected faces wont enter the building. In others words, the selected subdivisions wont extrude inwards, so that no recess (or window) appears. They go outward just fine, but going inward, the subdivision remains lined up with the outer face of the structure, so that no recess appear and the structures face remains flat.
Here's a few screenshots to better show what im saying:
Wireframe mode: As you'll see, the window recesses appear just fine in wireframe
Shaded: When shaded though, this is what I get

I read on an archived blog somewhere that is was a glitch in autocad2005. I am running 2010- so I don't get it. I really need to extrude these plines

I have a few splines where I have set a radial thickness, to render them as pipes.
I scaled them, and now the thickness values are no longer correct for any scaled line. Lofting or sweeping a circle shape along them makes no difference, as if the lines themself bear the scaling information.
If I create a new line, everything is ok. Is there a way to reset a line?

I have a problem when I am modeling my character or rather the character from the animation academy. I have created an NURBS sphere and I want to adjust it to the arm, so I go to the component mode add some isosparms and then it happens!!! I can´t move any vertexes... but in the object mode I can move the hole object.

I have a bunch of curves that is going to drive nhair. However I'd like to use the "soft modification tool" to do further adjustments to the curves. But I'd want to pin the root of the curves so it doesn't fly off the head when I use soft modification. Is there any way I can lock or pin the root CV of the curve? (its a cubic nurbs curve)

This is my model. Simple.
Now the only thing I want to do is to cut out this:
[URL]........
I used the Extrude tool just for visualization. The problem is, working with booleans apparently doesn't work for such objects, it works for freshly created clean polygons, but not for this one, when I try to use "Boolean difference" both objects disappear.
Extruding doesn't work because the faces are still there and I cannot delete them for whatever reason:
[URL].........
My cursor is pointing on the little face, but both are being highlighted. Making a hole through the the "Make a hole" function doesn't work because it only deletes faces as it seems.

My model loses lambert on only certain faces every so often. Might be related to clicking on camera or trying to extrude certain edges. I want to delete the camera but this happens to the model every time i touch the camera. I can't reapply the lambert by pressing 6 or assigning new material. if you know what's happening.

I am looking for the same function in Maya that I use alot in 3DS. In 3DS, you can "Merge" (import) models from another scene (file) into your current one. It allows you to pick a single model from the imported scene to be imported into the current scene.
I know Maya has the import function but it seems to import all the objects. I just want to import a particular model.
Is this possible in maya?

Here is what I've tried so far in creating the pupil of the eyeball:
1. Right click - select isoparm - attempt to select.
2. Right click - select Surface Point - attempt to select.
3. Left clicking
4. Holding shift (and other keys) - attempt to select
5. Right clicking
6. Middle clicking
7. Marqueeing
When I right click - select surface point, I get something that looks like a selection, but it also has an isoparm dotted line.... when I attempt to DETACH I get an error.

I am attempting to import 3d models from a software called Daz studio into Maya. The models enter motionbuilder and 3ds Max with no problem. When I import them into Maya they come in as wireframe. I have been unable to take the wireframe off of the model. The file format I am using is FBX. wHEN I RENDER an image of the model i am able to see it in it's realistic form-but when i attempt to see it in the viewport it is wireframe.

Say I have a car engine that I created. to make it easier on myself I made it out of a bunch of separate pieces. then at the end I combined them into one. somewhere down the line I'll want to animate the pieces separately, but until then I dont want all that inner geometry rendering because it takes up unnecessary render time. is there a function in maya where I can delete all invisible mesh geometry? so then any faces inside the outermost shell will be deleted.
