Lightroom :: What Color Space To Choose For Viewing JPEGs On Monitor
Nov 2, 2012
After reading many webpages and watching many tutorial videos about which color space to use, I get odd results. I understand that sRGB is more for web applications, and that Adobe RGB 1998 has a wider gamut, and that ProPhoto has the widest gamut of colors, particularly useful with printing.
However, in LR 4, when I export to jpeg as sRGB, Adobe RGB, and ProPhoto, the differences are very noticeable. sRGB looks the most vibrant, Adobe RGB looks flat, and ProPhoto looks dark with a greenish cast. I expected ProPhoto to look best, or is that only for printing, and I have to process differently?

1. Is there any benefit to using the ProPhoto color space when one's monitor is only standard (sRGB) gamut?
1a. Ditto Adobe RGB with a standard gamut monitor.
- What is the use of retaining more colors if you can't see them?
2. Are there any possible DISadvantages to using a wider colorspace than you can see?
3. If printing, how can you softproof your photos and visualize the printer output, if the file contains colors you can't see on your monitor?

When I export RAW files, specifying that I want the output to be in sRGB color space the resulting files have the Adobe RGB color space. The same is true if I specify I want them in ProPhoto. Is this a bug? I have done it successfully in other versions of Lightroom, but not in 4.3.

Editing a video in LR4 you can capture a frame, adjust the color, and save a preset to apply to other videos. BUT the frame capture is a jpg so you can't specify a color temperature; you hve to use the slider(s) and cross your fingers. I have two consecutive videos, one shot with AWB and the other set to Shade. I need to adjust the AWB shot (very cool) to match the Shade shot (very warm). There are so many sliders, I can't even get close to matching them.

When I export jpegs which I changed to "black & white" in LR 4.4, and import these exported photos into a different LR 4.4 catalog, the treatment of the imported photos changes to "color".
What can I do to keep the correct treetment?

Any resource(s) for correctly setting the color on my monitor so that it's synched with Lightroom? I have an 11x17 inch Dell monitor; don't see a model name.
I'm not sure if Adobe publishes anything or if I should check Dell's site.

I have been shooting RAW for a while and have notice that after I import the images and then start to view them in the Library Module I will see a slight color and quality shift - almost looks like a white balance shift but not quite. I was thinking that perhaps there was some automatic preset being applied but I don't have any presets at all.
I am shooting with a Canon 1DX as well as 7D. I have not checked to see if I get this situation with the 7D, but I know for sure that I get it with the 1DX.
Today I was reviewing some images in Bridge and decided to open one of them in Camera RAW. At that time I discovered that the camera's Image Style Settings were available, Faithful, Standard, Portrait, etc. I noticed that the images did not have one of the camera styles applied to them but rather the Adobe Standard Style. At that point from within RAW I selected one of the camera's styles and bingo thats the kind of shift I am seeing when I first view an image in LR4 Library.
So as far as I can tell the RAW images are getting the Adobe Standard style applied in LR. I have no idea if this is a default behavior of if I have done something to cause it. I'm also thinking that perhaps LR does not necessarily apply the Camera's Styles automatically even though the particular style has been set in the camera -- perhaps is not imported as part of the metadata during the import and thus defaults to the Adobe Standard.
1. Should I expect LR4 to apply the Style as set from the camera automatically or not at all?
2. Can I prevent LR from applying the Adobe Standard Style and apply no style?
3. Can I cause LR to apply the Style as set in the camera for the particular image to be appied automatically upon import?

LR 4.1 RC2, OSX 10.6.8 - when I'm trying to use the develop module with my second monitor, the image initially looks accurate. After a second or two and before any edits have been applied, the images desaturate and look very flat. Images viewed with the second monitor in Library module look great.

I am not an AutoCad user but I've got an assignment that would go better if I understood a little bit about how interior designers choose colors in AutoCad.I know there are the three tabbed choices - ACI, "True Colors" and Books. My top questions are:
1) does the user choose an RGB "working space" like one would do in Photoshop or Illustrator (in other words, decide if they want to work in sRGB or perhaps Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB). Or is there just one possible RGB - in which case, I guess it must be sRGB.
2) is the data for making up the ACI know, so that one can translate ACI colors to their RGB equivalents?
3) I now that with the HSL model you are picking %s of hue, saturation, and lightness....but what is setting the parameters for what is possible here? Is the HSL just a picker that is overlayed on RGB?

Is there a way to choose colors outside of the Photoshop application using the Color Picker? Coming from Macromedia Fireworks, I have become accustomed to using the Color Picker tool within Fireworks, which enables you to pickup any color outside of the Fireworks application.
I have seen thrid party tools that let you choose colors from various programs, but they just give you the color scheme and you must type in these color values within Photoshop.

I've attached an image of my problem for reference. I've had this problem in other versions of CAD so it's likely a user error that I'm not clear on how to fix.
I have several dimensions which I'm trying to place on my drawing through VPMAX in my viewport, but the text keeps showing up upside down. When I manually tell it to rotate 90 degrees, the text remains upside-down but the landing becomes vertical. When I rotate 180 degrees, the text becomes vertical which isn't really useful. Rotating 270 degrees almost solves my problem, but the landing is once again vertical.
If it matters, the UCS coordinates have been rotated 90 degrees for ease of viewing in paper space.

How do I tell what color space has been assigned to an image imported into lightroom. I think sRGB was assigned when it was edited in Photoshop and saved as a TIFF, but how do I verifiy that in Lightroom?

when exporting a photo, does Lightroom convert to a profile or assign a profile? Because there is no way to choose. I tried to export a photo with 3 different color spaces (sRGB, AdobeRGB and ICC profile from laboratory where I print my photos). After exporting them to JPEG it turned out that all of them look differently on my monitor - does it mean that Lightroom assigns a profile? If it was converting, shouldn't they have the same colours? What is more, after printing them in laboratory, results were completely different than I expected - the photo which had closest colours to what I saw in Lightroom was that in sRGB, but that with ICC of Lab was very different (much colder colours).
Where is the problem, or what aspect do I seem to misunderstand? Do I have wrong settings, should I use DNG to work with photos, should I export to TIFF, or I just have too weak monitor or wrongly calibrated one? Should I calibrate when viewing a picture in Lightroom or with the use of a photo exported to the ICC profile of Lab?
I would like to have a little bit of control over what I'm working on, depending on whether I want to publish it on a website or print. I know that my monitor can be a problem (I have an iiyama with IPS), but surely there has to be any way to make results of my work a bit closer to my expectations.
Just for information, my workflow doesn't require Photoshop, as I rather prefer to use only tools from Lightroom. I hope that my problem doesn't require the use of Photoshop.

Suppose I have an image in Lightroom. I export it to Photoshop for editing. During the editing process I convert the image to Lab color space. I complete the edit and then save the file. It goes back to Lightroom. Is it converted back into RGB at that point? Is there a problem with doing this? I'd rather not do any more color space shifting than I absolutely need to.

I installed LR5 from LR4 yesterday and each time I open an image in CS5 from my LR5, I get the following message:
The document "IMG_9082.CR2"has an embedded color profile that does not match the current RGB working space.
Embedded: Adobe RGB (1998)
Working sRGB IEC61966-2.1
What would you like to do?
-Use the embedded profiel (instead of the working space)
-Convert documents's colors to the working space
-Discard the embedded profile (don't color manage)
My camera's settings have it set with sRGB, LR4 and LR5 have sRGB and I have CS5 workspace as sRGB. This did not happen before.
Is it possible that when LR5 updated the LR4 catalogue, it changed the profile of all my photos? I don't know, maybe I've done something, but I can't see what as I don't remember changing anything.

Seems to no longer be able to choose a color outside the program window.. Previous versions were able to choose any color on my monitors. Might add, I miss being able to click an object and open the color editor directly..
I closed the program & reopened... It then allowed selecting a color outside the program window. Weird. And now I see that rather than "color picker on the context menu, it's "fill color". Wow, I'm losing it today.

I was wondering whether there is any way to choose the color of the user interface. By this I mean the toolbar, layers panel, etc. NOT the background, I've already figured out how to do that. Right now the toolbar/layers panel is this light grey color, and I'd like to change it so that the entire screen is a dark grey color, just as it is in CS6.

The color space on the selected images appears to be changing when I use the Lightroom flash gallery in the web module of LR4.1. This stays the same when the gallery is uploaded. In previous version of LR I have seen color changes in the web module but they have been corrected (and correct) when the gallery is uploaded to the 'net.
I have read that this was (previously) a problem with the flash gallery specifically becuase it was not colour magaded, but I understood that this had been corrected for LR4. As far as my use is concerned it's actually more problematic now than it has been previously.

Unfortunately I clicked on ok and the error message is gone but the colors on my screen are all weird, such as white showing as a ligh beige. Is there such a thing as a Photoshop CS2 profile that can be modified to fix this? Please let me know if you have any ideas.
