Lightroom :: How To Change Color From Red For Out-of-gamut Areas In Soft Proof Preview
Dec 14, 2012
I am looking at an image which has some red areas that are out-of-gamut in the soft proof profile I'm using. It's difficult to preview the areas as red is used to highlight those areas. How can I change the red to be some other color?

are the developing capabilities completely equal when it comes to gamut and histogram between ACR and LR5 (5.?) or to get equality do I have to develop in soft proof mode in LR5?

When soft proofing, I split the image horizontally and then create proof image when asked after making first alteration. However, in both LR4.4 and 5Beta, both the original and virtual (i.e., proofing image) change.
Have l Brightness value of 55 in original. Proofed image is duller. Increase brightness in proof by 10 to match original. (Figures are just for explanation) Now when I compare images again, original image brightness has increased by 10 also. This can be seen, of course, on the Develop panel.

I'm editing an sRGB image. My custom proof condition is set to sRGB IEC, preserve numbers unchecked, intent PER or RC, BPC. Gamut warning is turned on.
I add some text and color it using the text color selector tool. I enable gamut warning in that and choose an out of gamut color such as #ff0000. I return to the image and the the text is *not* flagged as being out of gamut.
In fact *no* color flagged as OOG in the selector seems to be considered OOG once I return to the image with sRGB IEC selected, though they are when I select other devices to simulate.
Why the disparity between the image OOG warning and the selector tool? Is the tool using a different simulated device to that I've selected?

I'm having with profiling my monitor/printer. I use an i1 Proof which includes the ability to profile my printer but my printer at the moment is a small Epson desktop printer - R220. "Near-as-damn_it" is my usual standard and suits me for general photography. At the moment I am photographing paintings with more exacting standards for reproduction.
I callibrate both monitor and printer. I have read and re-read instructions and use genuine paper/ink. My prints are appear a little darker than my monitor and in fact, the original painting. So can Soft proofing give an idea of the accuracy of the profile? (that's my main question).
Here are my settings
Device to simulate - myPrinterPaperProfile
Preserve RGB numbers - Not checked
REndering Intent - Perceptual
Black Point Compensation - checked
Simulate Paper - checked (which also auto checks the simulate black ink option)
Now, if that's my sofr proof setting and I toggle ctrl-y I am flipping between an impression of my printer profile and the actual display profile - is that correct? If I could put a screen shot of the two on the web,

an old box of Crane Museo paper to make some prints on my Epson 3800. I downloaded and installed the Museo profile from Crane almost a year ago, and it shows up in the Windows/sys32/spool/drivers/color directory, along with all my other profiles.
But when I tried to soft proof the image in CS3, the Museo profile did not appear in the list in the Soft Proof dialog. On closer look, there were a few other profiles that also failed to appear.
Is there any way to manually add these profiles to the Soft Proof list? I always thought that the Soft Proof drop down list just picked up the entire "...../color" directory?

Photoshop CS6 on Mac.
Edit an image file and get it to where I like on the monitor.Duplicate the file and set the new file to the profile for the printer which will be used, by using View > Proof Setup > Custom and setting an imported printer profile for the printing company that I use.
Edit the soft proof file to get it to where it looks good again. Save off the file for the printer and also save the new PSD file.
Close the PSD file.Reopen the new (soft proofed) PSD file.Still looks good, but.... when you check View > Proof Setup it's now generally set to Custom: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 instead of to the imported printer profile which was set previously. WHY???? Where did the printer profile go? Is it supposed to do this?
If I then reset View > Proof Setup to the correct printer profile, the image goes to crap again.

In Elements 6, every time we try to change bright white areas to another color, it doesn't work.
No matter what color is picked, the result is always an area of dark, charcoal gray.
Evidently, the program does not recognize Bright White as a color.
Is there a way to make these changes using this program?

I prepare graphics mostly for print, so I like to turn on the Proof Colors view and Overprint Preview views. It's a pain to turn these on for each document. Is there a way to make these the default viewing settings in Illustrator CS6?
I tried creating an action to do it, but the Insert Menu Item command in actions causes Illustrator to crash every time, and the help file seems to say that View commands are unavailable to actions. So I'm not sure if that's a bug. Oddly, Photoshop has the very useful File> Scripts> Script Event Manager that let's me turn on Proof Colors (via an action) whenever a document is opened. It works very well. However, Illustrator does not appear to have these options. I found the View> New View options in Illustrator. They let me create a view that turns on Overprint Preview, but absolutely refuse to turn on Proof Colors. So it's the same number of clicks and pointless.

When you click the color picker and you choose a color, sometimes the "gamut warning" box appears.
(1) What is gamut?
(2) When I choose a color and the box appears, should I click on it or should I just ignore?

I inherited a color from someone who has departed my company. It's a lovely, bright blue. He has rolled out this blue in all of our UI...that rebranding is complete. Now I come in to update the other corporate materials around this shade of blue only to find that it is out of gamut. When I click to correct it, I end up with a totally dull and lifeless shade of blue. The contrast between these two blues is really quite severe. No one except a color-blind person or maybe just a blind person would think they were the same. I am at my wit's end. One thing I am thinking of doing is getting one of those Pantone books and try to find a suitable blue using my own eyeballs because all of this has occurred on my computer monitor. Do you think I will find a better match that way or do you think Illustrator is tops at finding the right substitute?

I have a wide gamut monitor (HP LP2475w) which has already been calibrated. My question isn't so much about that, but the settings I should be using inside of Photoshop (CS5). As far as color settings (ctrl+shift+k) goes, what am I supposed to use? I have sRGB as the rgb working space right now. (never use CMYK), Gray % Spot = dot gain 20%, and preserve profiles are ticked on for all 3. Am I supposed to be using Adobe RGB in RGB working space to get the most out of my monitor? I'm asking because it would be embarrassing if I had a wide gamut monitor and am working within a sRGB color cap. What are the proper photoshop color settings, so that it works well across the board (browser compatibility, etc)
I am a professional digital artist who specialize in illustrations for print campaigns. So far from what I've seen, whatever's been printed out of what I produce from this monitor has come out pretty much looking the same, so I'm not worried about that. Again, I just want to make sure I'm not careless and am using settings which doesn't make use of a wide gamut monitor.

I have decided to put an DDR5 ATI card in my new Win7-64 build for editing photographs, compositing, etc. As I have used nVidia up to now I am unfamiliar with the ATI lines.
I have looked at both discussions here and the ATI site, but it isn't clear which cards will best drive my ASUS higher-gamut monitor. I have to build a new system right now. (Willl not overclock a i7-3770 or use two GPU cards linked with Crossfire. No plans for any gaming.) I would also like to keep this part of the build at a couple hundred or less. I saw that FirePro boards range a lot higher than Radeon, which I realize is gaming-oriented.
I hope to get DVI and Displayport as outputs. I use two 24" monitors, and the older unit can accept only DVI (or VGA, which I would avoid.)Any thoughts about the current ATI line for higher gamut?

1. Is there any benefit to using the ProPhoto color space when one's monitor is only standard (sRGB) gamut?
1a. Ditto Adobe RGB with a standard gamut monitor.
- What is the use of retaining more colors if you can't see them?
2. Are there any possible DISadvantages to using a wider colorspace than you can see?
3. If printing, how can you softproof your photos and visualize the printer output, if the file contains colors you can't see on your monitor?

'm working on a large number of images for an Android target. The target uses RGB565 format. Is it possible to configure color proofing on Photoshop (and illustrator would be good) to display with the color range of RGB565. I haven't been able to work this one out and have resorted to saving the image as a BMP in RGB565 format then loading it back in to check for atrifacts and banding etc.

I think I understand what View> Proof Setup does in Photoshop. It shows you a preview of what the image will look like with the chosen color space. But here is what I dont get. With an image open choose View>Proof Setup and then "Internet Standard RGB (sRGB)". Now close the image and reopen it. Choose View>ProofSetup again. Notice that "Internet Standard RGB (sRGB)" is already selected. Now, re-select the color space again and when you do pay very close attention to the image. Does it change colors? Mine does and that is what I am questioning. Why does it do that?
When I reselect the color space after opening the file, it changes color. Of course, if I select a different color space than what was selected when I open the file, it changes. I expect that.

When I first load photos into lightroom I get a quick preview than looks like a JPEG? A second later after the image has time to load the color will change. I'm guessing that I'm seeing a JPEG preview then I'm getting what the RAW image looks like? If that is the case, is there anyway to get that preview color back without exporting as a JPEG?

Just wanted to print a new photo and realized that the colors in print preview do not match the colors in soft proofing. In both cases I selected the same icc profile and rendering method. The print colors matched the colors in print preview. I never had a problem so far. All new prints will be checked with soft proofing and adjusted when necessary. I never paid attention to the color rendition in print preview and all prints perfectly matched the colors from the soft proofing. I was surprised when my print came out of the printer and the colors weren't matching the soft proofing colors, but that of the print preview.
I don't understand why Photoshop renders the colors differently in the first place. See attached screenshot for the difference in the blue/cyan colors. I don't care if the print view colors will match the print, but I do care when soft proofing is not working.

With LR4 and a Nikon D7000.When i import that raw in lightroom, the first view of the picture is fine then LR do its "loading" and bang, the picture changes. As RAW is not supposed to be affected by the colorspace My understanding is the embeded preview in the raw is sRGB and LR work in a different colorspace. If i change the camera for AdobeRGB, i dont have the problem and what i see from the camera to the preview then the final result is consistent. But this cause me another problem because i shoot RAW+jpeg, the backup JPEG saved in the other memory card is now AdobeRGB as well and less compatible as everybody knows, for web, print labatory, etc...
I dont have in LR any automatic developement settings. My screen is calibrated with a Spyder 3.
I'm feeling stuck in the corner as i want by backup JPEG in sRGB and n o colorshift in LR.

It's my understanding that a change made to a disconnected smart preview will automatically update the main database when connected to the drive containing the photo and database. Mine doesn't seem to work automatically. After reconnecting i have to save the metadata for the changed files on the version of Lightroom with the samrt previews and then read the metadata on the primary version of Lightroom. Do both versions of Lightroom need smart previews installed? Should I use a certain procedure of which i'm not aware? I have an iMac for my main computer and a Mac Book Pro for the remote computer.

having problems getting consistent archival inkjet prints from the places I have tried. I am now looking at 'soft proofing' which I suspect is not without its pearls. The problems I experienced before where the images were not converted to the correct profile was that sometimes they would print out,
at great cost correctly and sometime they would not, again at great cost. If the image is converted to the correct colour profile, in this case Hahnemule, will the embedded profile that the image will be printed out consistently and 2 different days?

Color feedback drops in and out. Yes I have the box checked in the settings. Sometimes it slightly works and most times it simply does nothing. Half the time I don't get color feed back and when I try to move the handle or scale, it doesn't affect the polygonal mesh at all. It's driving me crazy and I really don't want to do my facial blendshapes by hand!
I have also tried deleting my preferences, and it didn't work either.I have also tried resetting the tool. No go.
