Lightroom :: 3 - Import Dialog Visibility Dark / Low
Nov 30, 2011
I have struggled with various settings of the Interface under Preferences, but the import dialog in Lightroom 3.* is so dark/low contrast as to be almost invisible. I have to really strain to read it.
The "dim level" control doesn't work nor does using "light grey" or "white" backhground. I'm using pretty common, calibrated monitors and the problem is not just on one computer.
I've used Lightroom 5.2 RC for a few weeks and successfully imported a few times. This morning, however, the dialog will not come up and the program hangs until I kill it in Task Manager. This is in Windows 8 64-bit.
I've tried removing the memory card, and all other USB-connected devices, but it still hangs. I'm a developer and can supply crash dumps if necessary.
I am SO TIRED of having to unplug every single peripheral device attached to my computer before opening the Import dialog box in Lightroom to keep it from taking forever to access local drives due to auto scanning!
Why can we not turn that OFF in preferences? Why is it on in the first place? Lightroom should not scan a folder to generate thumbnails in the Import dialog box until a Source folder is manually specified! In fact, you should be able to Import without any thumbnails in the view at all if you choose.
I just installed Lightroom 5 and the import dialog box is not showing the previews of the images. Without the previews, there are no images to select for importing. It doesn't matter if they are JPG or CR2 and if I try to import from the camera card or hard drive. Version 4.4 also failed at first but after hacking away, I finally got the older version to work.
Since I upgraded to Lightroom 4.1 from 3 the Import Dialog screen will not auto open when I insert a memory Cart to my Imac. I have the correct box ticked in the preferences.
Is there anyway possible to view capture time instead of filename on the thumbnails in the import dialog?
In the normal gridview it is possible to change to a lot of diffrent info so it would be great if I could do the same thing in gridview in import dialog.
The info is there since I can hover to se the date but it would be a lot faster if it could be visible directly.
When importing files from a compact flash card (Windows 7, Lightroom 3 final) my "move" option is greyed out, and so I can only copy or add the files during the import. I want to move them so they are deleted from my CF card after the import
When I import files from the M Monochrom there are no actual previews in the import dialog window. Also LR4 does not indicate the aperture used in either the library or develop module.
LR3.6 started to fail to Syncronize folders. It also doesn't show only NEW photos on Importing fron hard drive, as it always has.
When I choose not to "show Import dialog" while synchronising a folder, it shows the correct number of new photos in a folder. But when the import starts there's a blank field and nothing happens. This can last for a whole day. Here is a screenshot.
The second problem is with Import.
When I start "Import" or mark "Show import dialog before importing" in syncing a folder it shows me all the photos, despite I choose "Add", "New Photos" and "Don't Import Suscected Duplicates".
I havent changed any preferances, it all just started to happen lately.
I'm using Raw Photo Processor plug-in for external developing, I thougt this might be the cause, but I've been using it for a long time, and the problems started several days ago.
When I import pictures from my SD Card I usually leave copies on the card for a while so I have them as backup, and to also be able to see recent pics on my camera. However each time I go to import pictures from that card within LR, it defaults to selecting all pics on my SD card even though I have the "New Photos" filter selected at the top of the import box. It always puts all my photos in the "New Photos" section, so I have to deselect all the photos that I have already imported into my catalogue so I don't get duplicates. How do I get LR to only import pics that haven't been imported bfore?
I am aware of the "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" option, but that is not the samea as what I am looking for. It only deselects photos that still exist in my catalogue. Any photos that I have deleted from my catalogue remain selected in the import box as it doesn't see any duplicates.
what I'm missing to have LR only select photos that haven't been previously imported from that card?
Lightroom 5.0 fails to detect memory card and open import dialog. This has always worked fine in Lightroom 4, 3,and 2. Same cards, same camera, same iMac using OS X 10.8.4. Manual importing works OK, card is detected just fine.
Open a new document, file, import, click on the file filter type near the bottom right corner. The filter list begins with PPT (Powerpoint) and ends with XLS (Excel). There are 28 other file types between those two, all in alphabetical order from P to X.
All the file types from A to P are missing.
If I go to tools, customization, global, filters, in the list of active filters, they're all there (apprx. 60).
I know in the past Premiere Pro wouldn't import a layered AI file, but is that still the case? I can get a layered PSD file to import layers as normal. When I try to import a layered AI file, I don't get the "Import Layered File" dialog as I do with the PSD files; I get a flattened image. Is this a setting I've overlooked or is this STILL not a feature?
My friend has taken some engagement photographs and unfortunately the couple have dark hair and the background is also dark - I think you can see her problem with the photos. Somehow the background needs to be lightened and neither of us know how (we both have Photoshop 7)
I am trying to import a LandXML surface into my project. However, when I click the "LandXML" button in the "Import" tab, absolutely nothing happens. The command _AeccLandXMLIn appears in the command line, but there is no dialog box and no further action from Civil3D. How I can get this to work?
I ran into a similar problem with the normal "Open File" dialog box, and had to run a FILEDIA command to turn that dialog box back on. Is there a command like that to turn on and off the Import LandXML dialog box?
I have a black background on the panels and the selection keywords, folders etc., are gray. This is verrrrry hard to work with for me. It LOOKS very nice but I need to change to a light gray background with black type. The preferences do not allow for this change.
I have used LR 2 in the past with Windows 98 and an HP Photosmart Pro B9180 shooting with Pentax k10d using DNG files and printing with few or no problems with minimal developing. I am now trying LR 4 with the same printer and camera but with Windows 7 and with little or no changes in developing the prints are very dull and almost black. I have the latest driver updates and am have the printer letting the application manage the color with the correct setting in profile.
II've just downloaded Lightroom 4 and the entire display is quite dark: I thought this was a cool new feature until I realised that the photos all display significantly darker than they should. Is there any way to correct this?
I use Lightroom 2.3 64-bit on a Windows 7 Home Premium operating system to process my RAW photos. When I export a post-processed photo to a folder on my hard drive, it appears very dark and muddy-looking, even though it seemed fine in the Lightroom catalog. I've had prints made from the exported files, and they also appear very dark and muddy. Also, oddly enough, when I return to the Lightroom catalog after exporting a photo, ALL the photos in Lightroom appear darker than they were prior to the export. If I close Lightroom and return later, they seem OK again (except for the already exported photos, which remain dark).
Yes, my monitor is an LCD and it is bright. It is not a proofing monitor. It was calibrated. I've been printing B&W from LR on an Epson printer (r1900 & r2400). I know proper color management. Turn off Epson Color Management, let LR manage color with the correct icc profile
Obviously I can do trial and error, brightening the photo until it looks correct. My thought is, is there a way I could print on one page Thumbnails or like in the film days strips with different "exposures." Then with one print I could pick how much of an adjustment is needed?
The fresh install of LR 5.2 renders all images - RAW and JPG - throughout the program with a very dark, green-yellow colorcast. The only place where images appear normal is in the Import dialog, while the thumbnail mode is active. Apart from that, every program module features this annoying reproduction. Here are some supporting screenshots (red rectangles are from me):
Import screen - thumbnail view - OK:
Import screen - preview - NOT OK:
Library view - NOT OK:
Strangely enough, if I export the picture to JPEG - without any modifications - the image appears normal again:
LR version: 5.2.1, 64b (tried the 32b version too, same error) OS: Windows 8, 64bit Camera: Canon 40d, imported images are RAW.
In LR 4, a small dark circle is appearing in the right upper corner of an image; hovering over it does not bring up an explanation and when tapping on it, it turns white?
How do you join a multi-word keyword so it is recognized as one keyword? i.e. If you want "New York", not "New" and "York." Do you put it in quotes? Isolate it with commas? Other?
Ocean View Ocean Front Over the Water
I try to do this in Library Mode, Keyword Creation box, I get 2 words.
Example, I type Los Angeles and get: Angeles, Los
Nothing I try works. I know it is common since I imported 200,000 images and I see lots of word combos used as keywords.
When I am going through RAW files from my Canon cameras (1Ds MkIII and 6D) I edit them in the develop module and then convert to aRGB or sRGB depending on the output media. They look good in aRGB and sRGB too when I take into account the limitations of sRGB.
---> However, if I try the softproof to aRGB or sRGB the resulting proof crushes dark tones into solid black. Why is this when the actual conversions are way better? The actual conversions look good in both LR and PS CS5.
I have also noticed that when I upload images to my online galleries and view them with Firefox (latest version and color management enabled for all rendered graphics) they appear darker in the darkest tones than what they appear in LR. What gives?

The usual import menue has the options for importing on the right hand side. My system is now showing an import dialouge box and the import dialouge on the right is greyed out. How do I get back to the standard import screen.
