I just installed Lightroom 5 and the import dialog box is not showing the previews of the images. Without the previews, there are no images to select for importing. It doesn't matter if they are JPG or CR2 and if I try to import from the camera card or hard drive. Version 4.4 also failed at first but after hacking away, I finally got the older version to work.
I am using Lightroom 5, Windows 7 64 bit.
When I import files from the M Monochrom there are no actual previews in the import dialog window. Also LR4 does not indicate the aperture used in either the library or develop module.
View 13 Replies View RelatedToday when I was importing images off a memory card I noticed the thumbnails in library mode were not showing any previews, they were blank (gray) for only the recently imported items. My other folders' thumbnails are showing previews with no issue.
I am working in Lightroom 4. I am using Windows 8 on a HP laptop.
A couple of other notes about what I noticed...
1. In the import screen the thumbnails display the preview.
2. Once the import goes to the Library Mode - thumbnails are blank. Can only see the image number and any symbols indicating tags or changes to the image.
3. Loupe view I cannot get an image to appear.
4. In the Develop Mode if I click on a thumbnail down in the filmstrip (which are all blank) an image will appear in the work area and the filmstrip thumbnail will display a preview of the one I selected. The thumbnail preview will remain visible for a few moments after moving to a new image. Then it just goes blank again.
5. I was importing jpegs and dngs. Having the same problem with both of these today.
6. All the other thumbnails in folders that were in the catalog prior to today are visible and working normally.

I've had trouble since upgrading from LR3 to LR4 with previewing files on import. Sometimes reports no import, sometimes just shows thumbnail; sometimes fails on all photos, sometimes on just some. Happens for different file formats (ie, JPEG, raw from different cameras), different card readers, different USB ports. Canceling the import and selecting import again seems to be a workaround, but this is annoying nonetheless.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI haven't paid much attention to my smart preview status. I always import and create smart previews and watch the completion bar go across the page and see the message after import that x number of smart previews were created.
But when I look at my catalog files (which I keep on Dropbox if that matters), I see that the file shows last updated on OCT 30 and it's 7.68gb. If I do a spotlight search for the smart preview irdata file, I find it has the same date but is 9.3gb. In either case, the size seems smaller than I would expect.
On my laptop, the smart previews of recent imports are all there, so I'm using them. On my desktop (even when disconnected from the drive with the original files) I do not see them (since that machine is always hooked up to the drive that the originals are on, it doesn't really matter but I'm confused).
Is there some setting that I can't find where I've set a max size of the smart preview file? Is there any way it could be saving somewhere other than in the LR cat folder I'm saving to?
I sometimes get full size previews in the import window (when I double click on a picture in the grid), but usually they are tiny and get extremely pixelated when I try to make them bigger. This makes it very difficult to decide if a picture is good enough to import.

When I import raw canon cr2 or Nikon NEF files, I cannot see the previews.
The progress bar gets stuck on building smart previews and I see a greyed out box. When I choose one greyed out preview box and go into develop then the preview appears and I can edit the image.
Slow rendering image previews in import dialogue?
My LR 5 is as slow as a snail generating those previews.
Importing my RAWs form the EOS 6D (saved on a 95MB/s 32 BG SanDisk Extreme Pro) it renders only the 12 or 24 displayed previews and leaves out the rest (the next only when I'm scrolling down). For 12 images LR5 needs 8-10 seconds. LR4.4 does the same process for all 150 RAWs in 1-2 seconds.
It doesn't matter if I want to import to my workstation (Dell Precision T1650, 8core Intel Xeon E3-1240 V2, 16GB RAM, 64bit) via USB 3.0 (Reader & Port) or to my laptop (Dell Latitude E6400). So it must be LR, not my hardware.
Are there known issues with the Canon-RAW format? I just updated EOS firmware to 1.1.3, but the renderspeed stays the same. For 1 image 3-4 seconds single...
Since starting to use LR in 2009, I've been making separate catalogues for every 6 months worth of photos. I've now decided to consolidate all my photos in a single catalog, but the process is taking forever, even though I'm not moving the photos, just importing edits/previews/ratings/collection etc.. How to speed things up.BTW, all of my catalogs have been converted to LR4 format.

Now when she launches LR the list of recent catalogs is empty. Could this be cleared some where? Why do they not show up and will they start showing up again after she opens different catalogs?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've used Lightroom 5.2 RC for a few weeks and successfully imported a few times. This morning, however, the dialog will not come up and the program hangs until I kill it in Task Manager. This is in Windows 8 64-bit.
I've tried removing the memory card, and all other USB-connected devices, but it still hangs. I'm a developer and can supply crash dumps if necessary.
I am SO TIRED of having to unplug every single peripheral device attached to my computer before opening the Import dialog box in Lightroom to keep it from taking forever to access local drives due to auto scanning!
Why can we not turn that OFF in preferences? Why is it on in the first place? Lightroom should not scan a folder to generate thumbnails in the Import dialog box until a Source folder is manually specified! In fact, you should be able to Import without any thumbnails in the view at all if you choose.
Any way to force Lightroom to behave this way?
I have struggled with various settings of the Interface under Preferences, but the import dialog in Lightroom 3.* is so dark/low contrast as to be almost invisible. I have to really strain to read it.
The "dim level" control doesn't work nor does using "light grey" or "white" backhground. I'm using pretty common, calibrated monitors and the problem is not just on one computer.
Since I upgraded to Lightroom 4.1 from 3 the Import Dialog screen will not auto open when I insert a memory Cart to my Imac. I have the correct box ticked in the preferences.

In the normal gridview it is possible to change to a lot of diffrent info so it would be great if I could do the same thing in gridview in import dialog.
The info is there since I can hover to se the date but it would be a lot faster if it could be visible directly.
When importing files from a compact flash card (Windows 7, Lightroom 3 final) my "move" option is greyed out, and so I can only copy or add the files during the import. I want to move them so they are deleted from my CF card after the import
View 15 Replies View RelatedLR3.6 started to fail to Syncronize folders. It also doesn't show only NEW photos on Importing fron hard drive, as it always has.
When I choose not to "show Import dialog" while synchronising a folder, it shows the correct number of new photos in a folder. But when the import starts there's a blank field and nothing happens. This can last for a whole day. Here is a screenshot.
The second problem is with Import.
When I start "Import" or mark "Show import dialog before importing" in syncing a folder it shows me all the photos, despite I choose "Add", "New Photos" and "Don't Import Suscected Duplicates".
I havent changed any preferances, it all just started to happen lately.
I'm using Raw Photo Processor plug-in for external developing, I thougt this might be the cause, but I've been using it for a long time, and the problems started several days ago.

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I import pictures from my SD Card I usually leave copies on the card for a while so I have them as backup, and to also be able to see recent pics on my camera. However each time I go to import pictures from that card within LR, it defaults to selecting all pics on my SD card even though I have the "New Photos" filter selected at the top of the import box. It always puts all my photos in the "New Photos" section, so I have to deselect all the photos that I have already imported into my catalogue so I don't get duplicates. How do I get LR to only import pics that haven't been imported bfore?
I am aware of the "Don't Import Suspected Duplicates" option, but that is not the samea as what I am looking for. It only deselects photos that still exist in my catalogue. Any photos that I have deleted from my catalogue remain selected in the import box as it doesn't see any duplicates.
what I'm missing to have LR only select photos that haven't been previously imported from that card?
Try to navigate into a NFS drive inside the import dialog. It does not work anymore.

I was approached yesterday asking why in the regular select file to open in AutoCAD some of the thumbnail previews won't show up. We checked in options and it is checked to show a preview. Only half a dozen or so of them aren't showing up.

I imported the pics once and then realized that I did not batch name them like I always do. So I deleted them from LR then renamed them in Bridge, then tried to important them again, it is a no go. So I have LR 4.1, I use Mac book pro, Mac os x version 10.7.4. I am pulling these pics off of my external Hard drive, I have never run into this problem before when I was using LR3.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am trying to sync my folders but Lightroom is not importing all of the photos in the folder. In one folder I have 675 photos (both jpg and CR2) and Lightroom is only importing 1. Even though you can look at the folder in another window and see all 675 (photo below). This is happening in several of my folders.
The folders that have problems have arrows that are greyed out versus solid grey arrows. If the info is needed:
- Mac Mini - OSX (Leopard)
- Lightroom 3
- Photos were in Aperature prior to exporting out to import into Lightroom
- Photos were either taken with Canon Rebel XS or Canon Powershot S3IS
- I have tried optimizing my catalog.
- I have tried remove the folder from Lightroom and re-importing. Still only recognizes 1 photo.
- The do not import duplicates button is not clicked
- I have confirmed that all filters are off.
Every-time I synchronizing a folder, Lightroom always shows Previous Import for the found images.I think this is very annoying, since I manually have to point to the synchronized folder.When I synchronize a specific folder I expect Lightroom to stay on that specific synchronized folder!There should at least be an option for this in the preferences but I haven't found anything...
I'm currently following a longer Lightroom 5 course on Lynda and this don't occur on the authors mac when synchronizing occurs!Is this a windows-only issue or should I dig deeper into my manual?
Lightroom 5.0 fails to detect memory card and open import dialog. This has always worked fine in Lightroom 4, 3,and 2. Same cards, same camera, same iMac using OS X 10.8.4. Manual importing works OK, card is detected just fine.

We have tried to study this problem, and first we notised that folders that houses images on both driwes, started to receve "read only" atrribute. Even tho we cleared this with user restrictions (folder security) the imported images still refuse to load the previews.Catalogue contains over 30 000 raw images.
We are starting to shoot blanks here. In short, the tree view shows first image of the folder, images are present in the system, but when you click the tree view to open up the folder, no images will refresh to center view of the screen. If pressed couple of times screen will go white, and crash LR.We have tried to "find missing files" and "folder synchronication.
Are the previews of deleted images themselves automatically deleted from the previews folder?
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is probably a really stupid question, but several of my settings dialog boxes aren't showing up. I right click on the buttons at the bottom (at the moment snap and grid show this problem), click on the settings selection so I can modify them, then the autocad window looses windows focus (the bar at the top goes to the pale blue), and I can't do anything in autocad. I hit escape and it goes back to normal.
That looks to me like it is opening the settings window, and my focuse is being set to it, but I don't see it. How do I fix this? Can I reset dialog box starting locations (not like I know how it got moved to a crazy place in the first place, but still)?
How can I get my settings dialog boxes back?
