Illustrator :: Include Linked Files When Saving Document

Aug 12, 2013

In Illustrator 6, you have to check "include linked files" every time you save a document.  If you don't, the next time you open it, you are looking for the missing link.  Is there a way that I can set a default so that it automatically checks it each time?

Illustrator :: When Saving A Document With Linked Images - Files Are Still Huge

Aug 28, 2013

I create a document with multiple artboards whereby every image I place in the document is linked, however the size of the document is still enormous (around 350mb). It's a big document with a lot of clipping masks on images but surely it shouldn't be so big.

I have a little animation of molecules forming and breaking down in cycle. The animation is keyframed but there are also Linked Constraints involved with no keyframes.

How can I bundle up or group this animation and objects including the linked constraint timings and clone it so I can then scale up and down the animation time and keep everything in working order?

Basically, How can I include the Linked Constraints in my bundle?

Illustrator :: Linked PSD Files Not Found When Opening AI Files Via Shared Folder

Mar 17, 2013

My main user folder on the iMac is set to be shared (read/write, including all enclosed files) with my MacBook Pro. The job is a series of one-page InDesign files (they are newspaper advertisements). The IDD files contain a series of Illustrator files with linked PSD files. The idea is that we can both work on the .idd and .ai files in the same folder at the same time.

It's all working fine EXCEPT that whenever an .ai file is opened on the MacBook, Illustrator doesn't know where the linked PSD files are. We can update the link, but when the .ai file is then opened on the iMac and saved, the same thing happens the next time it is opened on the Macbook.

I don't want to embed the PSD files into the .ai files as sometimes I have to modify them and they can be linked to up to 20 .ai files.

Illustrator :: Linked Files In AI CS4?

Sep 25, 2012

When I try 'placing' an image into a AI document, it appears to be embedding the file [be it a psd, tiff, jpeg etc]. Why would it of stopped linking the file?

I spotted this because in my Layers palette it says 'image' or the file name next to the thumbnail, as appose to 'Linked File' like it always has done. And in my Links palette, I've got the odd looking icon [I'm not sure what it is] on the RHS. Why would AI be embedding the placed files all of a sudden, have I clicked something?

Illustrator :: Placing AI Files In InDesign - Possible To Include Beyond Artboard Trim Area?

Oct 25, 2012

I'm working on designs in Illustrator and preparing an InDesign document with all of the graphics in one file for the client to review. The artboards are set to the size of a pier sign that will be all wood, but there are left graphics on the wood that will be laser cut and these extend beyond the edge of the wood. When I place the separate artboards in InDesign, they are cropped to the edge and I'd like to show how the left graphics extend beyond it. I've tried different import options but none of them show beyond the trim. (Also, if it makes a difference, the artboard sizes are fairly large—about 60" wide)

Illustrator :: CS6 - Image Document Looks Cloudy After Saving

Apr 30, 2013

I saved a logo I've completed at work using CS6, and saved it in CS5 format and also as a PDF. However when I open them both (one in illustrator and the other in Adobe Reader) they both have a cloudy, hazy effect over them. The colours aren't bright and crisp like they were when I saved them at work in CS6. I have them saved as RGB as well...at least that's what it showed the document colour mode was when I checked it

Illustrator :: Saving AI Document Title To PDF Metadata

Oct 27, 2009

When I save an Illustrator (CS4 and below) file that has a document title and an author in the File Info tabs only the author field is properly transferred to the metadata of a PDF when using Save As PDF. The title field of the PDF gets the file name ("map_data_2006") and not the document title ("Map of Data in 2006"). How do I keep from re-populating the PDFs with metadata (which increases the file size after a resave) which is already stored in the AI files?

Illustrator :: Linked AI Files Have Ridiculous Strokes Around Them

Mar 20, 2014

I have a AI file and it is a map. On this map I have Interstate and Highway road sign icons that were created in AI. When I place a new AI file icon, resize it, and then embed the AI file a stroke outline appears around the road icon and thus making the icons very ugly. If I place it and leave the icon alone and then embed it the file is fine. its only after I re-size it.

I am using AI CC 17.1 . When I embed the image I can’t find the option to un-embed the file. I used to be able to do that with Ai 6. is this a bug in CC?

Illustrator :: Can Snap To Points On Linked AI / PDF / EPS Files

Dec 3, 2012

I have a workflow where I will link a few PSD's and the other designers can modify the PSD files in Photoshop while I'm working on different content in the AI file. This allows us to work simultaneously and be more efficient with time, since my AI edits aren't dependant on them fixing up the images - it works great.

What I really need is to link an AI file and be able to snap to points on it while I'm creating a separate AI file - The linked AI isn't changing much but I need to see any updates made to it so I can adjust my AI accordingly - but it requires precision and I have to be able to snap to points/edges.

I've wanted this since Illustrator 10 and I can't believe there's no possible way to link to an AI or PDF and be able to just snap to the points, obviously AI knows about the points and lines, the linked content scales and is vector based. By default I can see the AI file but it has the "X" over it and all I can snap to are the edges/corners of the box it's placed in. This doesn't work for me and I have a hard time believing I'm the first person in the world to want to do a simultaneous workflow. I don't want to be able to edit the linked AI at all, just snap to its points.

Illustrator :: Unlocking Linked Files With Artwork

Apr 9, 2013

Occasionally I have to edit or use old pdf files that were created by my predecessors, who created the files by linking artwork placed within the file. Ordinarily that wouldn't be a problem, except that the folders containing all the linked files are long gone. When I open the files in Reader, I can zoom in on the images very closely and see that the image in very high resolution, which seems to indicate that there is vector art within the file, but when I open in Illustrator I get the message that says the artwork is no longer located at the indicated link. Is there any way to get this phantom version of the art that is only visible in Reader? I have opened in photoshop and grabbed it that way, but if there is a way to get it still as a vector, that would be better.

Illustrator :: Linked Files Via Relative Path Not Found?

Apr 18, 2013

I have linked files in a realtive path /sheets/ in my adboe ai file. We are generating 10,000's of images and placing them in the /sheets/ folder. The naming scheme is the same.

However when I share this project with a friend over dropbox.  ai + /sheets/ folder. When he opens it up he's getting a ton of errors about the files not being found.

Does illustrator ignore linked file locations if the path isn't ABOSULUTE?  Or if the newly generated images are overwritting the previous ones?

How can I fix this because we are looking at 10,000's of large image reaplcments that will take DAYS of mannual labor?

Illustrator :: How To Manage Linked Files With Multiple Designers

Oct 25, 2013

I work at a small company with multiple designers (5 of us) where 3 of us work remotely. We use dropbox to manage our files so that everyone has access--we keep client files in specific folders and stock media in a shared folder.

Currently whenever we open a file that's been edited by someone else, we have to go in and individually relink the files. Some would prefer to embed the files, however this can increase filesize by 60-400mb. Our current files total in at around 500gb, so I don't think that's a viable option.

4 of us are on Macs, 1 on Windows. 1 has CS5, 3 have CS6 and one has CC.

My question is this: If we all have the same path to dropbox (or the same path to the file, either way) will Illustrator be able to automatically find the files?

Eg. X:/Dropbox/...

If so, will it work cross platform?

Illustrator :: This File Cannot Be Found - Error Message When Saving Document

Dec 19, 2013

Strangely, every time I click "save" in CS6 it opens up a 'Save As' window, (which shouldn't happen), then I click save witht the existing file name (it then tells me the doc already exists), I click OK, (and then OK to the next popup window) then get the message that "This file cannot be found".  I'm forced to click "ok" and the doument isn't saved.  I've tried saving it differently in previous versions and it still doesn't work.  I recorded a video of this behavior. You can see it here - [URL]

Why would it be trying to find a file?  It seems like an error message when trying to Open a doc, not Save a doc. I can't shutdown my station until I get the document to save.

CorelDRAW X6 :: Multipage Document With Linked Frames Of Paragraph Text Not Printing Pages After 3-rd

Aug 5, 2013

I have multipage (16 pages) document with linked frames of paragraph text. Every page consists of 2 linked frames of paragraph text and second one is linked to the first one of the next page. When printed, it prints only first two pages as a whole. And the 3-rd and all the others prints only first frame of the page and two rows of the second frame of the page.

Is this my printer (Canon LBP3010) or the CorelDRAW ?

BTW: Paste 16 pages from WORD to Corel X6 takes infinity and crashes. In Corel 9 it takes about a minute for 80 pages!

Illustrator :: Saving Over Files In Right Location

Nov 8, 2013

I am working from a server, say there is folder A, B, C and D.

I open up a file from folder A, amend it etc and go to save over that (cmd-shift-s - i use this as it previews correctly rather than hitting cmd-s where it will preview only a bit of the artboard) and the save dialog box will either show folder B, C or D or will just Downloads or Documents for example - basically it will want to save anywhere other than I opened it from!

This is difficult because if I am working on 4 or 5 files making small amends and just quickly wanting to save over them and get onto the next one I have to then navigate to where the file is, even though I opened the document from there.

I have experienced this problem ever since upgrading to Mavericks!

Also, the Save box is tiny! I always have to expand it to see the folder contents etc

It doesn't work either way if I use Save (cmd-s) or Save As (cmd-shift-s). My colleague is also experiencing the same problem since upgrading to Mavericks.

These options are not here in CS6 and I cant find it.

Illustrator :: Enabling Use Compression When Saving Files

Mar 5, 2009

For years I have been enabling Use Compression when saving files. I am not sure exactly what it is doing but I do know that file sizes can decrease dramatically. I have seen 100MB files got down to 10MB.

Well the other day a coworker told me to always disable that because he believes that any embedded images will be compressed and lose quality and/or have problems ripping with Nexus or Odystar.

Is that true? Illustrator Help says that the pdf information is compressed when enabling it. So are there any disadvantages?
