Illustrator :: Enabling Use Compression When Saving Files
Mar 5, 2009
For years I have been enabling Use Compression when saving files. I am not sure exactly what it is doing but I do know that file sizes can decrease dramatically. I have seen 100MB files got down to 10MB.
Well the other day a coworker told me to always disable that because he believes that any embedded images will be compressed and lose quality and/or have problems ripping with Nexus or Odystar.
Is that true? Illustrator Help says that the pdf information is compressed when enabling it. So are there any disadvantages?

Adobe Photo Shop CS5 offers three options for conversion of a RAW file to TIFF (LZW, ZIP, and JPEG).
I do not understand which of these employ the "run-length encoding" scheme that should make the TIFF file much smaller than the RAW file. I have used all three types of compression but the only one that resulted in a substantial reduction in size was the JPEG compression.
The TIFF file with no compression is actually twice the size of the raw file. What are the LZW and ZIP compressions actually doing?

Make beautiful gradients. I know, its by using different colors, but when the times come for saving the image ( i prefer png at compression level 1) you have to make it narrow(if gradient is perfectly vertical).
But if you crop lenght at 1px you always get inferior image after you put it in website as background for example. roping at 10px wide does work but it still not good enough..

After working on a jpg file, when I want to save it, still as jpg, with my Photoshop CS5,
- sometimes photoshop will just save the picture, and it's done
- sometimes photoshop will show me the compression dialog, "JPEG Options", in which I can choose the compression ratio, the format options (baseline, baseline optimized, progressive), and have an estimation of the total file size
While not being prompted any dialog is simpler, and I'll then simply assume Photoshop decides to retain the current image's compression and format rules, I must say I like to be in control, and I'd like to know under what form the file is being saved without having to resort to the much more complex "Save For Web" menu.
WHAT "triggers" the appearance of the JPEG Options when we close/save a jpeg file, in photoshop ? What makes this menu not to appear, what makes it appear ? If there are trivial file operations/changes/filters that necessarily trigger its appearance when we want to save, something like that ?

When I save a PDF file in Photoshop CC in CMYK color with JPEG compression (quality = high), it will save without any errors. However, when I open the file in Acrobat, I get an "Out of Memory" pop up error. I press Ok, and the document is just displayed as a blank white image.
I'm using Win7 64-bit, Photoshop CC 64-bit. Plenty of memory (24GB) and allocated RAM in preferences, and I've done some troubleshooting that leads me to believe the error is not due to system memory, but rather a specific bug in the software. I have Photoshop CS6 on the same machine, and if I open the PSD, save as PDF with the above settings, everything is fine when I open it using Acrobat. This seems to just be for Photoshop CC, not CS6.
Here is the troubleshooting I've done so far:
PDF format, RGB color, any other settings --> Acrobat can open the file.
PDF format, CMYK, no compression --> Acrobat can open the file.
PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [medium] --> Acrobat can open the file.
PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [high] --> Acrobat can NOT open the file because it encounters the "out of memory" error.
PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [maximum] --> Acrobat can open the file.

I'd like to know if the new CS6 Preference which allows users to "Disable Compression of PSD and PSB files" applies to 8 bit files.
The reason I am asking is that the DisallowFlateCompressedPSD registry change for CS5, which disables compression of PSD and PSB files does not work for 8 bit files (it only works for 16 bit and 32 bit files)I work on large 8 bit files (4-8GB) and would like to know if CS6 would allow me to disable compression on those files.

One of my clients wants their files sent securely on DVD. One suggestion was to ZIP the jpegs and then appy the password option.
Has anyone done this? As it is really for security I would save at minimum compression.
But Does it affect the image quality?
Is there a better solution for secure delivery?

I have thousands of tiff files in my LR 4.1 catalog. I'd like to convert all of these files to tiffs that use zip compression. Preferably, I'd like to do the conversion in-place but LR won't allow me to overwrite the originals in-place.
So, I think I have to either export all of the images and either add them to the catalog during the export process *or* manually import them again.
I do *not* want to lose any of the LR edits I've made to these files and I think I will do exactly that if I use either of the conversion methods I noted above.

I am working from a server, say there is folder A, B, C and D.
I open up a file from folder A, amend it etc and go to save over that (cmd-shift-s - i use this as it previews correctly rather than hitting cmd-s where it will preview only a bit of the artboard) and the save dialog box will either show folder B, C or D or will just Downloads or Documents for example - basically it will want to save anywhere other than I opened it from!
This is difficult because if I am working on 4 or 5 files making small amends and just quickly wanting to save over them and get onto the next one I have to then navigate to where the file is, even though I opened the document from there.
I have experienced this problem ever since upgrading to Mavericks!
Also, the Save box is tiny! I always have to expand it to see the folder contents etc
It doesn't work either way if I use Save (cmd-s) or Save As (cmd-shift-s). My colleague is also experiencing the same problem since upgrading to Mavericks.

I used to save all my slices in CS5 and it would give me the option to save for web and devices, then when I was in there it would let me choose the option at the bottom Other... then I could go in and save it as a html and images and then it would automatically make div's for me when I brought it in to dreamweaver. Where did this option go in CS6? I lost all my work transferring it back into cs5 to try it there like I used to.
These options are not here in CS6 and I cant find it.

Prior to printing my work, I save PDF versions of my files. More often than I'd like, when I print the PDF file from my computer, some of the graphics do not print correctly. For example, a portion of a curved graphic (like a swirl) might be cut off leaving a blunt straight edge. Have issues with PDF files? Is there anything I can do to control this quality issue?

I have the Creative Suite 5.5. Illustrator starts, but trying to open (.ai or .pdf) or save a file causes it to crash.
I have deleted the preferences folder.
used uninstaller to uninstall complete Creative Suite package. Used Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool.app afterwards. Reinstalled. Still it crashes.
Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Pro all seem fine.

In Illustrator 6, you have to check "include linked files" every time you save a document. If you don't, the next time you open it, you are looking for the missing link. Is there a way that I can set a default so that it automatically checks it each time?

I need to find a way to convert a LOT of ai files, individually, to low res pdf's. Preferably with the presets I want, not some defaults. I'm not interested in an action. I was hoping for a droplet, script, or something similar.
I did find this and it looked promising... [URL] ....
That almost worked. Ultimately, for some reason, it couldn't see the ai files sitting in the specified folder.

I create a document with multiple artboards whereby every image I place in the document is linked, however the size of the document is still enormous (around 350mb). It's a big document with a lot of clipping masks on images but surely it shouldn't be so big.

I would like to know if there is some type of plug-in, etc. out there that would allow me to have all the functionality of a Distiller dialog box when I save a PDF out of Illustrator CS5. Right now, I just have what comes installed with Illustrator. It's a stripped down version of what you would find in distiller.

When you export from Illustrator CS6 or CC in TIF format, you are given the checkbox option of LZW compression, but the output file does not seem to be compressed. When I open this TIF file in Photoshop and do a Save As, selecting the LZW option produces a dramatically smaller file than the one produced by Illustrator.

I'm trying to set up an action to save a batch of files I creating using the variables tool (as detailed in this video: [URL]), I'll go into the Actions window, and record myself saving the current file in .Ai format, and then stop recording. Seems pretty simple, but when I set that action to run a batch on my dataset it saves all the files without an extension. Am I missing another step where I set the file format that the action is supposed to save with? I'm confused. I've tried this using a few different file formats and they all come up the same.
this is what my Output looks like:

Illustrator CS6 hangs (spinning beach ball) when saving files to the computer's local HD while having multiple server share points mounted.
I am NOT opening or saving the file to or from a server. The server is mounted so that I can move my saved file to it once complete.
Unmounting the servers fixes the problem and Illustrator CS6 returns to being normal (not causing a spinning beach ball).
This is repeatable, not intermittent.

I'm currently running AutoCAD Electrical 2013 and every time I open a new drawing my undo is automatically disabled. Sometimes even changing from sheet to sheet in a project will result in my undo command being disabled. When I use the UNDOCTL command I seem to default to 48 and when I use UNDO to re-enable it I select the "All" option which gives me a 53 back for UNDOCTL, meaning that undo has been re-enabled.

I would like to inform all about an (in my view) incorrect behaviour of LR:
In order to speed up my workflow i disable detail and lens corrections for all images immediately after the import (select all, auto sync is on, turn off detail and lens corrections). With this panels turned off I can do basic operations like cropping etc much, much quickier. I shoot badminton sport and have to process hundreds of images. After the basic corrections I re-enable detail and lens corrections for all images which should restore the previous settings of this panels or at least the default (ISO specific) settings (which is the same in my case). But the "Remove Chromatic Aberrations" remains off, even if it was on before and on by default for all my lenses! I consider this to be a bug.

When I choose "Enable Profile Correction" in Lens Corrections panel in develop module, the histogram changes as well as the image itself (gets brighter).
I do see the image change as it applies distortion correctly as well. I go back and hit reset and try again and always happens. I have only noticed this with my Nikon D600 with the kit lens. It did not see this with my D90 - no histogram changes,
This occurs in LR 4.3 and just upgraded to LR 4.4 to see if it was fixed.
The histogram looks normal.
The histogram after selecting the lens correction. The histogram changes plus the RGB looks too symmetrical as well.
Interestingly, I changed it the Make to Canon and it went back to the original settings. I checked other cameras and some behaved like the Nikon. I also went through various len models and some show this histogram fix with some lenses and looks normal with others.

I have a data-linked table (from an Excel 2007 file, 32-bit) in an Autocad 2010 drawing (64-bit, Windows 7 OS).
If the table is displayed as a single column, with table breaks off, the file will save within seconds.
If I enable table breaks, it will take at least 3-5 minutes for the drawing file to save.
I am unable to find any solution. I've tried using different table styles, different linked files/drawings, saving locally vs. on the network, headers and titles repeating vs not. The slowness is a major productivity killer.
