Illustrator :: Opening Or Saving Files Cause 5.1 To Crash
Jun 14, 2012
I have the Creative Suite 5.5. Illustrator starts, but trying to open (.ai or .pdf) or save a file causes it to crash.
Â
I have deleted the preferences folder.
Â
used uninstaller to uninstall complete Creative Suite package. Used Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool.app afterwards.  Reinstalled.  Still it crashes.
Â
Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat Pro all seem fine.

I've found an issue with 3ds Max 2012, when I open/upgrade my 2011 scene, max will crash immediately and every time. I used a 'binary search' approach to figure out what part of my 2011 file/scene was failing to import by exporting half of it, importing it and seeing if it crashed, if so, I'd split that half in half again and repeat until I got down to the offending object. I managed to get down to a single Loft object, which when exported (Save As > Save Selected) just on it's own would cause 2012 to crash on opening it.
It's not a biggy for me as I can just delete the offending object and carry on.
I'm not quite sure why there isn't a try-catch block around the entire import/load file function inside 3ds max, so that if/when max exceptions it won't bring down the entire application? I guess making this a safe transactional operation would be fairly difficult.
So we have inherited files from another company and there are some files which have begun crashing once the save command is initiated. Typically, the file seems to be saving for about 5-10 minutes, and then it gives a "FATAL ERROR: Cannot write to undo file (probably disk full)" alert. This obviously crashes the application without saving the file. The files that crash are the sheet files into which we have multiple xrefs which are overlays, not attachments. There are 4 xrefs in these files. I don't see why this would be a reason for the application crashing, but it's all I can think of that may be the problem.Â
Is there a way to prevent Ai CS5 from re-opening documents after a crash? Â I think a specific document is causing Ai to crash, so after Ai crashes, it tries to re-open the file when I restart Ai, then it crashes again - ad infinitum!
I use PS CS4 for photo editing and digital scrapbooking. For the past few weeks I have had some issues opening layered psd files of digital layouts that I have saved. They save properly but when I open them there is nothing but a black document with a red stripe going across the top. Can someone please help? Here are a few screen shots of what I am getting. In the first one you will see that the thumbnail is an actual image of the document and the second one is a screen shot of that document when I open it. ETA: This does NOT happen all the time. I have successfully saved and opened some psd files since having this issue for the first time a few weeks ago. I just can't seem to pinpoint what has happened prior to the psd file not opening properly.
(1) When I go to open files, raw or jpeg, I now need to enter a value for 'enable' on the open dialog. That never was necessary before.  (2) When I go to save as jpeg, the file type defaults to eps. And even when I change to jpg, I get a dialog about eps options.  The only way I found to get around this was to convert my files to 16 bit. That certainly shouldn't be necessary.(I'm using Photoshop CS6 on a Mac running Mountain Lion)
I have a new Mac (2x2.4GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon, 12GB Ram, OS X 10.8.2) and the latest version of Photoshop (13.0.4) installed.Besides the general slower behaviour sometimes, opening and saving files with 80+ layers is unacceptably slow..This is like going back 10 years compared to CS5.5
CS5, window 7, 64 bit. Inexplicably, CS5 just stops working with PNG & GIF format files. Bridge says it's missing a/the java plug-in. Huh? Java is up to date at OS level.
Ok, I'm in Illustrator CC and using the Object>Pattern creator to make new patterns. but I seem to be unable to figure out how to save those patterns to be able to open them in other documents.I have gone to 'Save Swatch Library as ASE' but then it says swatches with gradients and patterns will not be saved. Â I have tried to 'Save Swatch Library as AI' but it still doesn't seem to save it anywhere. How do I save a pattern I create to be able to open that pattern in a different document later?
I am using corel X6 64 on a Dell optiplex 9010 intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz 3.40 GHz. 8.00GB of RAM. Its taking about 1-2 minutes to copy/cut/open a file/save a file or even publish to PDF. On the same machine Same circumstances but different User i have no problem. I have to use my user because its connected to my email and at this company i cant change that. I have researched many forums and its not color styles or object styles. It does it on a new file with only one object created. I got a new computer signed on to my user account and the problem persists.
I've gone nuttier this time. I just installed Illustrator CS6 onto my MacBook Pro OS 10.8.2. I want to set up a default opening page but this time, it's not a clear path to do so. How do I set up an opening page with a new font, rulers, empty fill etc. as the default page without having to search for a template each time I open a new page? Where does the default page to go now? etc.
I have tried CS5 & CS4 and when I open the program and attempt to open or save an .ai file, the program completely crashes. My system specs are as follows: Â Â Manufacturer: DLS Processor: AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor 5200BÂ 2.70 GHZ Installed Memory (RAM): 1.50 GB (1.25 GB Usable) 32 Bit Operating System
It was working perfectly fine over the weekend and then Monday I open illustrator and try to open a drawing I was working on and it closes on me everytime. Now I can't open or save files without it closing itself. I would uninstall and reinstall it but i lost my code. I have to make vector images for a couple of clients of mine!
My main user folder on the iMac is set to be shared (read/write, including all enclosed files) with my MacBook Pro. The job is a series of one-page InDesign files (they are newspaper advertisements). The IDD files contain a series of Illustrator files with linked PSD files. The idea is that we can both work on the .idd and .ai files in the same folder at the same time. Â It's all working fine EXCEPT that whenever an .ai file is opened on the MacBook, Illustrator doesn't know where the linked PSD files are. We can update the link, but when the .ai file is then opened on the iMac and saved, the same thing happens the next time it is opened on the Macbook. Â I don't want to embed the PSD files into the .ai files as sometimes I have to modify them and they can be linked to up to 20 .ai files. Â G5 iMac OSX 10.7.5 / Macbook Pro OSX 10.8.2 / networked via FireWire cable / file sharing on, laptop user has Administrator status, all files are read/write, permissions include all enclosed files / CS6

Even though they are saved as AI. On other computers it opens properly. The few files I can open, I can't select using the selection tool because of a clipping mask I cannot get rid of.
I've been using Illustrator for a few year now, but I've never had this problem before. Recently, I went to open up some files I had been working on. The problem was, when they opened, the files were blank. There was nothing on them. Â When I open pdf and eps files, they're fine, it's just ai files that open up blank. Â I ran a quick test where I created a new file and saved both as an ai and eps file. I closed it and quit Illustrator. I then re strated the program and opened the test file, and lo and behold, the ai file opened up blank, but the eps file was fine.
I installed a OKI C301dn printer this week, thats when the problem first occured (not sure if the printer has anything to do with the problem, but it's the only 'change' i made) Most .ai files will open normally, except the one I need. The specific ai file (contains a linked jpg and a linked psd file) opens normally on my other machines (Mac and Pc) I removed the printer and CS5, used the Adobe cleaning tool and reinstalled CS5 but the problem remains. (I also did a memory check, registry clean) I'm using Win7 64bit on a i7 system with 8gb
I posted another thread yesterday trying to figure this issue out. Illustrator does NOT actually crash, instead it hangs and simply becomes unresponsive when trying to open a handful of files. I have been reading other threads similar to this and have addressed all of the issues that seemed to have resolved the problem for other people, i.e. reset preferences, reinstalled illlustrator several times and removed preferences, etc. I do have a Wacom Bamboo tablet, but I have removed the driver and files from my Mac. But, it seems odd that the Wacom plugin would cause only a select handful of files to become unresponsive. I have a lot of work that needs to be done but I can't take a step further without Illustrator working properly! Â [URL]
i have a Mac OSX V.10.7.5 and 3.4 GHz i7 8GB Ram.  Indesign and Photoshop open files very quickly, but illustrator while opening any type of file—whether it's an AI Cs6 file or EPS file or SVG file—there is at least a 20 second delay.
I have a user that is attempting to open multiple files at once in IllustratorCC. When you select multiple files and right click -> open, it only opens one file. If she double clicks a file while there is a file open in illustrator, nothing happens. The only way she has found to open multiple files is to go to file->open->browse to location for each file. This is quite time consuming. Is there anyway to enable being able to quickly open multiple files similiar to how older versions of Illustrator did?
I just recently bought a new computer, so I thought I could at last use Photoshop CS3, but apparently it does not like jpg's that are rotated (with lossless jpg conversion) in Irfanview. Code:
I am working from a server, say there is folder A, B, C and D.  I open up a file from folder A, amend it etc and go to save over that (cmd-shift-s - i use this as it previews correctly rather than hitting cmd-s where it will preview only a bit of the artboard) and the save dialog box will either show folder B, C or D or will just Downloads or Documents for example - basically it will want to save anywhere other than I opened it from!  This is difficult because if I am working on 4 or 5 files making small amends and just quickly wanting to save over them and get onto the next one I have to then navigate to where the file is, even though I opened the document from there.  I have experienced this problem ever since upgrading to Mavericks!  Also, the Save box is tiny! I always have to expand it to see the folder contents etc  It doesn't work either way if I use Save (cmd-s) or Save As (cmd-shift-s). My colleague is also experiencing the same problem since upgrading to Mavericks.
I used to save all my slices in CS5 and it would give me the option to save for web and devices, then when I was in there it would let me choose the option at the bottom Other... then I could go in and save it as a html and images and then it would automatically make div's for me when I brought it in to dreamweaver. Where did this option go in CS6? I lost all my work transferring it back into cs5 to try it there like I used to.  These options are not here in CS6 and I cant find it.Â
