Photoshop :: Prompted File Compression Rules On Saving Or Not
Oct 14, 2013
After working on a jpg file, when I want to save it, still as jpg, with my Photoshop CS5,
- sometimes photoshop will just save the picture, and it's done
- sometimes photoshop will show me the compression dialog, "JPEG Options", in which I can choose the compression ratio, the format options (baseline, baseline optimized, progressive), and have an estimation of the total file size
Â
While not being prompted any dialog is simpler, and I'll then simply assume Photoshop decides to retain the current image's compression and format rules, I must say I like to be in control, and I'd like to know under what form the file is being saved without having to resort to the much more complex "Save For Web" menu.
Â
WHAT "triggers" the appearance of the JPEG Options when we close/save a jpeg file, in photoshop ? What makes this menu not to appear, what makes it appear ? If there are trivial file operations/changes/filters that necessarily trigger its appearance when we want to save, something like that ?
Adobe Photo Shop CS5 offers three options for conversion of a RAW file to TIFF (LZW, ZIP, and JPEG).  I do not understand which of these employ the "run-length encoding" scheme that should make the TIFF file much smaller than the RAW file. I have used all three types of compression but the only one that resulted in a substantial reduction in size was the JPEG compression.  The TIFF file with no compression is actually twice the size of the raw file. What are the LZW and ZIP compressions actually doing?
When I save a PDF file in Photoshop CC in CMYK color with JPEG compression (quality = high), it will save without any errors. However, when I open the file in Acrobat, I get an "Out of Memory" pop up error. I press Ok, and the document is just displayed as a blank white image.
I'm using Win7 64-bit, Photoshop CC 64-bit. Plenty of memory (24GB) and allocated RAM in preferences, and I've done some troubleshooting that leads me to believe the error is not due to system memory, but rather a specific bug in the software. I have Photoshop CS6 on the same machine, and if I open the PSD, save as PDF with the above settings, everything is fine when I open it using Acrobat. This seems to just be for Photoshop CC, not CS6. Â Here is the troubleshooting I've done so far: PDF format, RGB color, any other settings --> Acrobat can open the file. PDF format, CMYK, no compression --> Acrobat can open the file. PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [medium] --> Acrobat can open the file. PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [high] --> Acrobat can NOT open the file because it encounters the "out of memory" error. PDF format, CMYK, JPEG compression [maximum] --> Acrobat can open the file.
Make beautiful gradients. I know, its by using different colors, but when the times come for saving the image ( i prefer png at compression level 1) you have to make it narrow(if gradient is perfectly vertical).
But if you crop lenght at 1px you always get inferior image after you put it in website as background for example. roping at 10px wide does work but it still not good enough..
For years I have been enabling Use Compression when saving files. I am not sure exactly what it is doing but I do know that file sizes can decrease dramatically. I have seen 100MB files got down to 10MB.
Well the other day a coworker told me to always disable that because he believes that any embedded images will be compressed and lose quality and/or have problems ripping with Nexus or Odystar.
Is that true? Illustrator Help says that the pdf information is compressed when enabling it. So are there any disadvantages?
I have CS3 extended and have been compiling a series of high resolution photographs into one layer in photoshop. I have copy and pasted each photo and then stitched them together resulting in a file that is 1.35Gb. I want to compress the file, keeping the resolution as high as possible, so it is easier to use in illustrator and import into ArcGIS. I have tried saving the file as a jpg, pdf and tiff with variable compression qualities. As soon as i open the image up in a different programme and zoom in I loose the picture, eitehr to a blank screen or a message saying 'invalid format/picture'. Opening the file and saving is taking so long too do as well...
I use CS5 on Win 7 64-bit. Today I learned about this option to disable file compression to speed up save time:
[URL]........  I downloaded the reg key and installed it. When I restarted PS to test it on a file, there was no difference in either save time or file size. The test file is a 300 MB multi-layered PSD file.
I'm trying to add audio to a slide show. I've done it before on this computer with no problem, but now it's telling me I don't have the correct compression files installed on my computer.Â
How to copy a style to a different Shape file. I created a complex style for a shape file, connected with FDO. Thematic rules, labels and so on.
Now, I want to use the same style for an other Shape file, that has the same structure. If I save a .layer, this contains also the connection to the original Shape file.
A local search of my HD and a search on the subject here returned with zero results...
Where does one find the Inventor Sheet Metal Rules excel table for 2012 on a Windows 7 system?
All the documentation says it's located in the Documents and Settings directory, but Windows Vista eliminated that folder and thus it is not in Win7 either.
I can find the SheetMetalRules.xml file, but I need the excel table for modification.
I am trying to export .MOV file for resolution 1280x1080 (HD) compression is  DVCPRO (for broadcast) server is Harris. And i m  making a project on the 1280x1080 8 bit, field 2, fps 25.  and using the file which has size 1280x1080 at 50 P.  So when i export this as .MOV and choose compression DVC pro 1080. it gives me error message, "frame rate and bit dept is not same of the clip and compression u choose
I'm running PSPX3. the effect of no compression (or compression factor = 1) on saving files. I've got a JPEG image file straight from my camera that's approximately 4.1MB in size. If I do nothing else but "Save As" with a compression factor of 1, the new file size is approximately 50% larger, or 6.2MB. What has changed to make the file size larger? Both images are still 72DPI, 3648X2736px. I can't image that I have done anything to "improve" image quality, so why did the file size increase?
I had my automatic save set up for every 10 minutes but files were not being saved regularly. I deleted files from the Temp folder thinking it was full and now there are no .sv$ saving at all. How can I make drawings save automatically every 10 minutes?
Background info:  We got several image files every 2 weeks which should be edited and mainly reduced in size for web purpose. This work needs 1 work day for one man/woman to do, because he/she has to open the file save for web and then set the quality to a value were the file is nearly about 150-200 KB in size.  The images are different, some have few colors, some have a lot of colors and there are also different in resolution. But they should not be reduced in resolution, only in quality. All other specs of the image should be kept  Is there any possible script, plug-in or similar which can do the same (Saving with a specific max. file size) in some automatic and faster way?
Using Photoshop CS5 -- I saved a Photoshop file I created as a .pdf file but some of the areas on the .pdf file (specifically, sections of text) do not have any of the color/fill information, they are just white (blank areas). I've seen this before when converting other Photoshop files and could not find a work around. I tried saving with various compression levels (max, high, med) and it makes no difference.
am having an Issue with CS6 when saving files. When saving a file using the 'Save' option (not 'Save As') the file is not staying at the size of the artboard as it should, it is however being aurtomatically cropped down to the actual artwork size. This is causing issues with the Process we work with as we need the file to stay at the artboard size.If I click 'Save As' and change the Adobe PDF Preset to 'Press Quality' then this works, however this means that every file we save(which is quite alot in a day) means we have to go through the 'Save As' option and manually change each save.why this has suddenly started to happen with our Illustrators and do you know how to fix this so that it stays at the Artboard size when 'Save' is used?
I am using Inventor 2012. I want to put a label with a prompted entry. So I did this,
SCALE: <scale>
However, when filling out the symbol it only puts in the scale without the label. The reason I am doing this is because my text is right justified and I need the label to move with the text.
Open an .AI file saved on a netapp or windows shared directory with full permissions (prior to saving I noted that all security groups are intact in file properties as we have 2 for read and write access)Make any changesTry to save and get the prompt: Can’t save preview, but all other information was saved successfully. The file couldn’t be found. ID = -43 (file is now corrupted and looking in security group file properties the 2 security groups designated for read and write access for the directory is now gone and shows an unknown security group????)
Save as works without a problem. Try to press save again and get This file has been modified outside Illustrator. Do you want to continue?Continue and prompted This file cannot be foundObviously the file preview icon goes from a thumbnail of the file to a generic iconWhen I try to open the file I get: Can’t open the illustration. The file is locked or in use.It led me to believe the issue was either OS X or CS5.5. I was able to open the file fine on Windows Illustrator CS5.5 make a slight change and resaved (which fixed the file and opens again in OS X and read/write security groups show up again?)Optionally, I was also able to fix the file to where I could open it in OS X by simply giving myself Read/Write access to the file from Get InfoÂ
Notes:No issues with the same file in 10.7.x.
I've tested on all available Mac Pro / MacBook Pro machines and issue doesn't seem to happen on MacBook Pro retina?Photoshop and InDesign not affected
I'm linking an excel file to an .ipt file with iLogic code determining if the Material type is a certian value it will find the correct material thickness. These file work great when working on them thru Vault but when I "Save As Template" and create this file where our other template files are located (not Vault) this fuction does not work. I have realized that I had to place the a copy of the excel file in the same file folder as the template ipt, but even this does not fix the issue.Â
I recieve this error:
Error in rule: Material, in document: Part6
'MWW Materials (Inventor).xlsx' could not be found. Check the spelling of the file name, and verify that the file location is correct.
If you are trying to open the file from your list of most recently used files, make sure that the file has not been renamed, moved, or deleted.
It seems completly countintutive that just saving the file as a template file would cause this not to work when all files that are required are located in the same file folder. Maybe I need a reference to the excel document within the iLogic code.
When I bring up n image file from a folder and after I work on it I would like to save in another folder other than from the original download file which is the only choice I seem to get.
Is there way to designate a "default" folder for saving other than having to continually search for the folder I wish to save to?
I saved a symbols file with a few symbols in it. Â I then create new .ai files - create some graphics then want to save some of them in the symbols file. Â I dont see a way of saving symbols from the .ai file into the already existing symbols file.
I need a perfect 4x6 inch across my board (In photo contests in my area we have to submit 4x6 prints). When I change to inches in my rules and units the numbers change to inches but the image does not. I have tried to change the resolution but nothing. When I go to document size to change it the image gets very small because of the rule is in inches. The same happens when I go to canvas size. The image in 2560x1697 pixels at 72 resolution. It appears that there is about 5 PS inches for every real inch. Right now the ruler states the image is 35.556 x 23.569 inches (in document size). I am in standard screen mode but the image in not a perfect 4x6. I am working in PS6 windows with updates.
I'm trying to understand jpg file compression and how Photoshop deals with it. Let's say I have two jpg files of the same subject - one was compressed to 4.4 MB and the other was compressed to 1.2 MB. I was told by a friend that once they are opened in Photoshop, that it did not matter how much compression was previously done since opening them in Photoshop will uncompress them back to their original uncompressed 20+ MB file size and that you will not lose any image quality. So that a higher level of original compression will not degrade the photo quality since Photoshop brings back (uncompresses) the file back to the original size when the picture was taken.
I understand that the .jpg format is a compression file that will degrade over time after repeated saves using photo editing software.
However, does this loss of information from a compressed file still/also occur after the file has been placed into other programs such as InDesign, Word, etc.?
I am trying to create a template and want all of the revision material to show on all the sheets but the prompted entry that I have put into the template makes me re-enter it every time I change sheets. Is there any way to have it flow through onto all of the sheets instead of having to re-enter all the information.
I've got a file of about 40mb which saves as a max quality jpeg in Photoshop at around 12mb. Once it goes into InDesign and comes out of the other end as part of a PDF the file size is down to 3mb. Â I'm convinced data is being lost but one of the answers seems to indicate that zip compression is now being used in addition to the jpeg. Â I always thought it was hardly worth zip compressing files like jpg, mp3 etc that are already compressed and that the only way InDesign could be knocking my jpegs down to a fraction of their size was by recompressing them as lower-quality jpegs?
