I am new to Illustrator having had to switch from FreeHand recently and can't figure out how to get gradients to flow through non-touching objects. The "merge" option here treats things differently than FreeHand did and only works with paths that overlap.

View 6 Replies View RelatedOn illustrator cs6, I have a complex shaped with a gradient fill. when I go to expand there is an option that says Expand Gradient and you select the amount of objects. so I selected 6 objects, and the expand tool did what I expected, my object got divided into 6 objects with fill colors relative to the gradient.
so I hit undo, and I moved a stop on my gradient slightly to affect the results a bit, and now it wont expand the same way. my gradient stays a gradient. I tried drawing new shapes with gradients and the gradient wont expand.
I'm working on a logo and I need to merge three objects into one and then apply a gradient. I have a circle, a ring around it and a line that connects the circle and the ring. How do I merge these three objects? I've been looking around the intenet but not found out how to do it..

I've expaned the stroked lines, so they are now a group of objects in a heart shape. I need to fade them from 100% red to 100% transparent. I don't know how to do this with a group of items.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to create an effect of small text following the outline of very large bold block text (see picture). The idea I had was to first create the 'ME' in very large font as text. Then convert that text to an object / path using "Object -> Flatten Transparency... -> "Convert all text to outline"". Then, select that path and use the "Type along path" tool.
However, when I use that process, the resulting path is a compound path that therefore the Type Along Path tool doesn't work. Any pointers on how to achieve this? The image below I just used the pencil to trace the letters (quick and dirty) but the result is choppy, etc.
Is it possible to resize objects by a mask transparency or using another object as a guide that has a black-white gradient?

I need the frame of the image below as a stroke style (or at least I prefer that above having to copy-paste the elements of the sides 100 times along a frame in my design )
The thing is: it contains gradients. How do I get the frame to a stroke style so I can easily use it in Illustrator?
I need to apply a single gradient acros a number of live paint objects but am finding it annoyingly hard to find a way. I know that normally, to apply a gradient across multiple objects, you would need to make them all into one compound path but does this apply to live paint groups in any way?? Can what i need to achieve actually be done?

I'm creating text that will be printed on a deep gray to black tshirt.
I created text, added an offset path to it with a gradient, and a deep gray color fill on top, achieving the gradient stroke. However, I'm not exactly sure what color the shirt itself will be, other than deep gray to black. And I didn't want the deep gray/black fill in my text to appear and look awkward on the shirt. Unless that is something I shouldn't be considered about.
To be safe, how would you create transparent text with a gradient stroke? I'm using Illustrator CS5.
Just passing along this preview "glitch" in CS5 that could cause some headaches or costly reprints.
We had a file where some text "appeared"on screen as a solid fill even though it was mistakenly filled with a gradient in the colour panel.
When the job was output the type was missing.
Upon investigation it was noted the text was filled with a gradient through the color panel....however the preview did not reflect this. The proper way to apply a gradient to text is in the appearance panel> add new fill>gradient.
This will preview the gradient in the text properly. Shouldn't there be an friendly error message or pop up to warn users that this fill option is not available?
I am using CS6. I have created some text with a gradient fill. I have converted it to shapes before addin the Fill. I appear to get a slight black shadow arround the letters. This appears to get worse when I Export it to png with a transparent background. This black shadow is not a stoke that I have added.
How can I remove this black effect?
When I draw a frame, suddenly In-Design has started to put a slightly larger area around it which also repels text. I must have inadvertently invoked this feature somehow, but as I'm not sure what I did to cause it I can't work out how to rid myself of its effect.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn the past, I've been able to take a pdf file, place it in Illustrator and then manipulate the text, objects, etc. For some reason I've been unable to do so with my new Illustrator CS6. Would this issue have something to do with the way the file has been scanned? Is there some way to open a pdf file in Illustrator in order to make edits?
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am working on creating a book layout for print. I opened the .doc file through my Mac text editor and placed in InDesign CC as a text flow. I am working on adding design elements now (after I adjusted the page layout of the text on all the pages) and blank pages keep inserting themselves in weird places (for instance page 7 will suddenly turn into a blank page and my text will move itself down while design elements such as chapter headings will stay in the place where I put them, but then be completely out of place according to where the text is now). I have tried to adjust it every way I can think of--- by moving all of the text up onto the new blank page and re-aligning the chapter headings, by moving the blank pages to the end of the book and deleting them, and of course, by just simply deleting them. (Deleting them just causes the layout to become mis-aligned even worse, and just re-adds the blank page I attempted to delete.)

I start with something like a circular hierarchy, that I get as an output from another program. These are only lines and text. Now I want to add a flag behind the text. This flag should have the same orientation as the text path.
As this hierarchy is actually pretty big (this is only a snippet), I don't want to rotate all the flags manually. I tried to do it manually with the below example, but it still doesn't looks right...
Is this a proper method to rotate the flags according to the orientation of the text paths in Illustrator?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am using Illustrator CS6 and if I click on one of the file menus ("File", "Edit", "View", etc.) if I want to open another menu without closing the previous one I have to click on it, while the default behaviour for other applications is for the menues to follow the mouse cursor, so how do I make it so that if I open the "File" menu and mouse over the "Edit" menu, the "Edit" menu would become open?
