Illustrator :: Apply Gradient Along Stroke To Calligraphic Brush Path?
Dec 26, 2013It seems that gradient stroke only works as 'within stroke' for calligraphic brushes... and it's frustrating. I'm using CS6.

Illustrator :: How To Select Only A Portion Of Path To Apply Brush Stroke
Feb 11, 2014I'm trying to select a portion of a path by using the direct selection tool and shift clicking on the anchor points. But when I click and drag the brush over onto the path, the brush stroke is applied to the entire path..... which I dont want to happen. I only want it applied to the section of the path.

I am trying to do the same thing, but every time I select the fill color and start using the brush it goes back to "none" as the fill option. Is this a CS6 exclusive feature?

Jan 24, 2013It seems that all these gradients-in-stroke options are only available for strokes that are aligned to the center of the path. I have tried to set inside and outside strokes, but i cannot for the life of me activate the right two options (even though they look like i can click on them).

Jul 3, 2013Updated Illustrator to CC and now my apply gradient to stroke is acting funny (also does it with apply along stroke). First i can't get it to show up unless I find a number it likes (start out with 1 pt, don't see a stoke so increase size 1 pt at a time up to 11 to see it) now the corners have gotten strange, They seem to be missing small patches. You can see in the image I am not doing anything fancy, it's type and then just to make sure it wasn't a font problem I tried just a rectangle. It seems to be worst with corner set to round joint.

For instance, I have a regular line with a stroke of 5 and then add a brush profile, which then converts the original stroke to whatever the brush was made at.

Feb 15, 2014Why I can’t add a gradient to a brush stroke. As soon as I select the drawn brush stroke and I try playing around with the gradient, the whole stroke goes black…This is driving me nuts. And the weird thing the gradient can be applied only to the basic brush type…not the one that I need unfortunately. I’m not sure why that is…I can only add colour to the brush stroke but no gradient sadly. Is there something I’m doing wrong or a setting which prevents this from happening?

Sep 30, 2012I am using Ai Cs6. I am trying to make a new calligraphic brush. The graphic I wish to create the brush for is highlighted on my screen, and I clicked on the New Brush icon in the Brush Menu. After changing the angle, roundness and size, the only options are "fixed and random". All other options are greyed out. How do I access the "tilt" feature for example?

Oct 7, 2012I'm working on a reflective drawing and using gradients on strokes. I've been using pressure sensitive calligraphic brushes I made. Now I'm trying to use variable width preset profile brushes. It works fine for the first stroke, but every time I make a new stroke, it reverts back to a calligraphic pressure brush. How can I keep my brushes the same profile until I manually select it to be different? I've gone back and forth between the brush tool and pencil tool and neither will keep any basic variable width profile past the first stroke. I have to select every brush stroke and change it again and again after drawing it.

Jan 14, 2013Reducing the Roundness of a calligraphic brush to 0% seems to create 'flat' ends to a stroke, but, on closer inspection, the ends are not perfectly flat/straight.
The line seems to start and end with a slight 'S' curve; it's less visible when the stroke has a different bearing, but I need it to be gone - is this possible? I'm trying to create a calligraphic brush with perfectly flat ends.

Looks better, but I also want to have a gradient, not only 1 stroke colour.. is this possible? If not, how do you fill your shape with a gradient?

Here is an example. I was wondering how to do that in PSP X3 Ultimate. I am not new to PSP but I never used the more complicated brush features. Oct 17, 2007I created a brush and I have created a path. What I want to happen is for the brush to follow the path and keep the angle of the path. What I mean is the brush should stay perpendicular to the path. So that on angles...the brush takes that angle. Does that make sense? Let me explain exactly what I have done. I created a brush that is just a rectangle that is about 1px wide and about 7px tall. I have created a path around some text. I want the brush to follow the path around so that it looks like stitching. But what is happening is on the vertical sides..the brush is staying vertical.

In cs5 i could stroke the path based on the brush size/shape when i choose "brush" and simulate pressure to get those nice faded out lines.
In cs6 I do the same thing but the stroke size never changes to the brush size even when i make sure "brush" is selected.
Second question... I want to add some lights with Knoll Light Factory; is there a way to preview the lens flare on top of all the current layers to see what it will look like? Sometimes i'm trying to position it on top of a very specific area. I know I can change the background layer to the specific place, but getting a full preview would be great.

Apr 9, 2013I'm trying to figure out a way to automate a simple, yet repetative process I do countless times a day. Ideally, I'd like to tie it to a keystroke to speed up my workflow.
I work on line art and colorways for footwear, so the way I'm coloring these shapes and strokes break apart the different materials and pieces of the shoe.
While coloring line art, I work with Pantone spot colors as fills for closed path objects. I then have to manually apply that same color to the stroke, set the stroke to 0.5px weight, convert that spot stroke color to CMYK, and add 15% to the K value.
I found some code in an older post for applying the actively selected object's fill color to the stroke, but I'm having but I'm having trouble with the next step of figuring out how to take that spot stroke color and convert it to a CMYK build that I can then add 15% black to. Is this something that's even possible? I've spent about an hour playing with the script and have only had luck matching the fill color or turning the stroke white.

I am simply trying to apply a gradient within a shape, and it keeps only applying it to the stroke. If I try to add a gradient to a path that doesn't have a stroke, it will automaticallly add a stroke.

Oct 25, 2012I'm trying to apply an along stroke gradient to a stroke made with an artistic watercolor brush that comes with the program. Whenever I try to do this the gradient comes out greyscale. In the gradient window it will show as the colors I've chosen (ex. white -> orange), but when I draw the stroke it comes out greyscale regardless. If I draw the stroke with a different brush, like a regular round brush, it works perfectly fine. It seems to be doing this with all "artistic" brushes.
Is there a link there between artistic brushes and greyscale? Am I just doing something very wrong?
I'm running the trail version, does it have something to do with that?
Illustrator :: Change Direction Of Gradient Stroke?
Jun 20, 2013Why is it that when I apply a gradient to a stroke I cannot use the gradient tool to change the direction or position of the gradient? I can make a fill and offset the path and then move that gradient (which is a very similar effect), but gradient tool does not work on a stroke. I am just baffled by the idea that I can put a gradient on a stroke but then only change it by using the gradient palette to change the angle and /or height /width...and that honestly dosen't work well.

Feb 18, 2014I'm creating text that will be printed on a deep gray to black tshirt.
I created text, added an offset path to it with a gradient, and a deep gray color fill on top, achieving the gradient stroke. However, I'm not exactly sure what color the shirt itself will be, other than deep gray to black. And I didn't want the deep gray/black fill in my text to appear and look awkward on the shirt. Unless that is something I shouldn't be considered about.
To be safe, how would you create transparent text with a gradient stroke? I'm using Illustrator CS5.
Illustrator :: AI CC - Cannot Set Stroke Of Path To Anything Less Than 1 Pt
Aug 23, 2013I can't set the stroke of a path to anything less than 1 pt.
Though a dragged path (by an endpoint) snaps to a point on another path, when I lift my finger, the dragged point and path jump a small distance away.
Aligning two separate paths to their common (e.g. top left) endpoints also leaves the two endpoints slightly displaced from each other.
