Sep 12, 2013Is there a way or an option I am missing to convert my regular paths to a path stroked with a brush profile,while maintining the proper stroke width?
For instance, I have a regular line with a stroke of 5 and then add a brush profile, which then converts the original stroke to whatever the brush was made at.

It could be easily done with the width tool but it doesn't work directly on the stroke.

Oct 17, 2007I created a brush and I have created a path. What I want to happen is for the brush to follow the path and keep the angle of the path. What I mean is the brush should stay perpendicular to the path. So that on angles...the brush takes that angle. Does that make sense? Let me explain exactly what I have done. I created a brush that is just a rectangle that is about 1px wide and about 7px tall. I have created a path around some text. I want the brush to follow the path around so that it looks like stitching. But what is happening is on the vertical sides..the brush is staying vertical.

In cs5 i could stroke the path based on the brush size/shape when i choose "brush" and simulate pressure to get those nice faded out lines.
In cs6 I do the same thing but the stroke size never changes to the brush size even when i make sure "brush" is selected.
Second question... I want to add some lights with Knoll Light Factory; is there a way to preview the lens flare on top of all the current layers to see what it will look like? Sometimes i'm trying to position it on top of a very specific area. I know I can change the background layer to the specific place, but getting a full preview would be great.

But when I click and drag the brush over onto the path, the brush stroke is applied to the entire path..... which I dont want to happen. I only want it applied to the section of the path.

Mar 5, 2014Trying to use the width tool, I ran into the following problem. I would like to have a smooth transition of the stroke width between two width points while keeping the original stroke width unchanged outside of that line segment.
There are four width points here: two end points and two in between. The original stroke width is 200. The two on the left have one side set to 100 while the two on the right have one side set to 50. I would like to eliminate the distortion of the line width occuring in the first and third line segments. The only solution that I have come up with so far is to place two additional width points very close to the two middle width points: one with a 100-unit side to the left of the second point in the picture and one with a 50-unit side to the right of the third point in the picture. Yet there will be a small distirtion in between.

Aug 22, 2007I'm sure you know you can convert a photoshop path in to a direct selection, but did you know you can convert a selection into or back into a path?
It's as simple as making a selection via a lasso tool, marquee box or magic wand, open the path window from windows and press the "make work path from selection" button on the tool bar. It is as easy as that. However the toolbar button defautls to a tolerance of 2 pixels which can give you a loose fitting path in places.

Jun 8, 2013I’m a PS user new to Illustrator (CS6). In PS, using the bracket keys [] to increase/decrease brush point size will simultaneously update the data displayed in the tool panel at the top.
While I can use the bracket keys in Illustrator to change the appearance of the brush stroke, it is not being updated in the tool panel input or in the stroke window…so I can essentially have (2) 3 pt strokes created with the same brush that don’t visually match but whose display properties DO match. Because I will be doing lots of editing I certainly don’t want to work this way.

Jul 19, 2007when I used to paint with Photoshop 7 and a mouse, I had it set up so that my brush strokes would fade gradually as I dragged the brush across the piece, like a real paintbrush running dry with each stroke.
Ever since I upgraded to Photoshop CS and a Wacom Graphire tablet, I can't figure out how to set my brush tool up like I used to have it (I prefer it for speed painting). Currently, my brush strokes vary in width based on the amount of pressure I apply. :B
how to adjust my settings so that the level of pressure on the tablet determines the stroke's transparency as well? Or at least point me to the right thread?

Illustrator :: How To Create Natural Random Stroke Width
Feb 27, 2014I do cartoons and I want to be able to use the pen tool, brush tool and/or even blob brush tool to draw. I'm trying to draw a straight line that has a varied stroke width, so it looks like it's drawn with a felt tip marker or maybe a pencil. The natural random/varied stroke width is what I'm looking for.
I see the "vaiable width profile" drop down box in the tool bar but I only see one option that looks like this (it says "width profile 2" when I mouse over it). Although this varies in width, it's too consistent and doesn't look natural at all. Is there a way to get a varied stroke width for straight lines? I have a pen talet and have tried pen pressure as well but I've not found an easy way to do this.

Apr 18, 2013my 2 year old photoshop cs4 has been always inexplicably crashing the moment I would try to use a 70 pxl brush... I learnt to work around it, but just yesterday another similar problem kicked in, when using the short keys to widen or narrow the width of the brush, the moment it hits 30 pxls photoshop crashes too. I can't work like that. I hit option-command-shift to open the program to reset, nothing. I reinstalled the whole cs4 several times, nothing. I downloaded, installed the updates for the program.

May 18, 2012I was wondering if there was any way to maintain stroke width (with antialiasing off) when importing/resampling vector files, like pdf. photoshop does this, i think.
i made a test case that shows the issue in the attached files. the PDF is a 1px-stroked square. when i try to rasterize it to 100dpi (or any dpi other than 72) using Gimp or any tool that relies on ghostscript for rasterization (imagemagick, mupdf, xpdf) i get a square with unevenly stroked edges. photoshop's algo maintains the stroke width in favor of maybe less optimal positioning.
is there any way to make Gimp or any other pdf->png rasterization tool (ghostscript included) prioritize stroke widths over positioning?

Illustrator :: Stroke Width Profile Doesn't Mirror Automatically
Oct 3, 2012I can't believe Illustrator doesn't do this automatically. If you create a stroke profile on one side of the stroke by holding Alt/ Option while dragging with the Width Tool and then mirror the object, the stroke profile doesn't mirror accordingly. You have to go to the Stroke panel and click one of the flipping buttons for each stroke of the mirrored artwork. This makes mirroring complex artwork very time consuming. Mirroring with transform effect doesn't have this problem but this makes the usage and editing of the mirrored object difficult.
I'm just posting this before making a feature request in case I'm missing something. And to check if this problem has been already raised and the feature request made.

Illustrator :: Seamless Repeat / Clipping Mask - No Stroke Width
Sep 5, 2012I am trying to create seamless pattern repeats. Most of the time when I do this I get thin lines between the tiles (I place the original pattern and move>copy it to exact measurements). I have read in other forums that these are 'ghost' lines which don't appear when the design is printed out, but I've had fabric samples printed that do contain a line. Also sometimes the motifs on the edge of each tile don't match up - see the slight line down the orange / white cups here:
I move>copy the motifs using the exact measurements of the artboard, I line up my clipping mask with the artboard and they are exactly the same size, and they have no stroke width. I can't work out why it still does not work.
Even before I copy and tile the design I sometimes have a thin white line down one side - see below.
