View 4 Repliesi have created a stroke with a calligraphy brush. Now i want to make the stroke a bit thinner at some points of the path.
It could be easily done with the width tool but it doesn't work directly on the stroke.
Is there a way to convert the stroke so the thickness of the stroke will be kept at the other points?
I’m using Adobe Illustrator CS6 with a mouse rather than a pressure graphics tablet.
When I create a stroke using the Paint brush tool I would like the stroke to contain a variable width profile. For example narrower at the beginning and end of the stroke but thicker in the middle. Now I can do this by selecting the line after I have made the stroke and choosing the Basic Brush Definition from the drop down list. But if i try to draw a new line the settings are reset again. I cannot create a variable stroke while creating the stroke. The brush definition keeps resetting to 5 pt Round and stroke width 1 pt. It would be much quicker if the stroke remained as a varying width profile as I created the strokes.
I noticed the same problem with the blob brush tool except it's even worse. With the blob brush tool the stroke weight always resets regardless of whether or not I try to set a Variable width profile.
I tried deselecting "New Art has Basic Appearance" mentioned on another forum but that didn't work.

Notice the variable width profile is maintained as the artists draws. It doesn’t keep resetting.
I created text on a curved path using the pen tool and the the type on a path tool. However, there are portions of the text that I want to taper. For example, my text begins horizontally, continues to the right, and gradually curves downward. As the text curves downward I would like it to taper smoothly into a narrower and narrower text.

eraser tool works on every draw/shape/stroke but the artistic media tools. is there a workaround?
Is there a way to use the line tool to make a 1 pixel wide line? When I use a brush width of 1, the line apears to be blurred. I would like the line tool to draw a line as if it was drawn using the pencil tool (with brush width of 1). This means that every pixel I colour, will have the exact ARGB value that I am using at that moment.
I have attached an example of this to this post. It consists of two lines, the top one has been drawn using the line tool, the bottom one using the pencil tool. I would like to turn the top line into the bottom one.
I drew a cured line with the brush tool in illustrator CS5, but when I select the new "width tool" to change the width, it doesn't work.
Here are my steps:
1. Select the paintbrush tool
2. Draw something
3. Select the "width tool"
4. Try to change the width but it won't work.
Since I draw with the paintbrush tool, the "width tool" can be very handy if I can get it to work.
I scanned an image that I want to trace, but it won't let me use different strokes with the pen tool? I don't have any layers locked and the strokes are all loaded, it just won't let me use them on that image.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy paintbrush tool does nothing more than place a hairline path along where I've drawn. I've tried editing the stroke settings, changing brushes, ect, nothing is working. This isn't actually limited to just the paintbrush tool, but all of my drawing tools. I'm just baffled about why Illustrator is absolutely the most user-unfriendly piece of software I've ever drawn in.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been making my drawing with the pencil tool obviously. After I make a stroke, I continue it with the last anchor point. But sometimes when I do that, the previous stroke disappears completley. Why is that?

Is it possible to "stamp" these brushes at regular intervals across a straight line? Instead of manually pressing them down one by one?
I would like to animate a serie of objects I made with the blend tool in Illustrator. It is an object that transforms into another one, I am trying to put this into a small animation like a gif.
I have also Photshop but I know better Illustrator, so I tried to export each of these objects in separate jpg files
but couldnt find a way.
I'm working on a project that is going to have a lot of differing line weights. I outlined everything, and started using the width tool around the eye and noticed it scaled the width proportionately. The iris sits inside of a clipping mask because it would seem most efficient to be able to adjust the points later down the line if I need to. I would like to avoid having to have the iris, a clipping mask with no stroke, and then the stroke placed on top of everything. Is this possible?

I'm pretty sure I followed his tutorial exactly but it did not work satisfactorily. Are there any other tweaks I should be using to remove these cables and replace them with the background details?

Here is the image. [URL]
I am looking for any info on scripting the Variable width tool (Javascript).
Background: By adding a gradient to a variable width strock you can create nice 3D looking Shapes (see example)
this is a straight vertical line with varied widths, then hit with a gradient.
Goal: My hope is to write a script that will take a "Profile" or "Shape" and convert it to a Variable width line. (see Example)
The Black line is to have its widths modified
The Red line is how wide the line needs to be.
I'm having a problem with the Blob Brush tool where I can't change the basic brush to something else. Whenever I pick a brush I want and I try draw with the Blob Brush tool, the brush I picked reverts back to the basic brush. Here are screenshots:
I pick a brush that I like first
But when I start drawing with the Blob Brush tool, it reverts back to the basic brush automatically
Am I doing something wrong or is the Blob Brush tool only capable of using the basic brush?
I recently upgraded my computer to Windows 7 (32 bit) and installed CS5 on it. Everything seems to be fine, but using my wacom intuos 3 tablet i found that when making curved brush strokes every so often it came out as a straight line, the straight line being where i start and finish the curve (see pic below. The S stroke is what should happen. The straight line is what happens every so often with the same motion).
At first i thought it was the tablet and reinstalled the drivers to no effect. Since then i've discovered that the same thing occurs with the mouse. The problem occurs once every five or so strokes (i'm doing digital art, so there's a lot of strokes). It never happens if i do a stroke slowly, but will almost always happen if i do a fast stroke.
Testing other painting programs i've found them all to be fine (i grabbed trials of open Canvas, Sai and Gimp and had no such issues). However, getting out my old copy of CS2, i found it had the same problem. The problem does appear to be Photoshop + my computer based. I've since reinstalled them both but had no success there either. (My computer is a intel i3 btw with 8gb of ram, so i wouldn't believe it to be a performance issue)
Ive been messing around with the variable width tool, Im not sure I i changed something, I did try to restore defaults but when I make a change it changes the opposite side of the image. For example In screen shot I changed the width on the left and the effect showed up on the right.
I would like the width to change where I change it.
I use Illustrator CS5 and can not blend variable width strokes in Illustrator. I can not do that even with the same width profiles unless they are expanded. I could not find any questions similar on the net regarding this, but wanted to double check before I just made the necessary changes. I'm a bit confused because Adobe 'help' shows how powerful the blends of objects are, but we can't do them as strokes?
I want to keep the blend as strokes not expand them. What is the best way to view how the blend will look with variable widths without expanding and then 'undoing' a bunch of times.
but is there a hot key for expanding the blend without going into object-blend-expand?
I designed a logo for some family friends, and the main part of the logo is hand-drawn, and it is made of multiple (a TON) of strokes. The company is getting t-shirts made, and the t-shirt company contacted me to get a "vector file with the fonts outlined." I know quite well how to do this on actual fonts, but how to outline a series of strokes.
View 5 Replies View RelatedAm I the only one who has edited a stroke with the stroke width tool, then outlined the stroke only to find a countless number of points and noticeably unsmooth edges? Is there a setting or certain way to ensure that the stroke width tool won't corrupt the smoothness of my shapes? The stroke width tool is the most handy new feature I can imagine, but this problem makes it almost entirely useless, unless designing something where precision and smoothness are not important.
View 6 Replies View RelatedIn Illustrator CS6 and CC, when the stroke width tool is used on a curve, the curve is actually made up of a series of straight lines instead of smooth vector curves:
whereas in CS5 it looks perfect. These images may be too small to see the details, but the difference is there. Is there a workaround for this? Or is it recognized as a bug?
The brush tool loses the outline of the tool as the diameter gets larger. e.g. at 175px there is a fill outline of the tool. At 200px only a semi-circle is shown.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSo everything is fine until I use the select tool, and then free transform a part of the image. Then my brush and eraser stop working until I save and restart the program.
View 1 Replies View RelatedHow is width and height calculated in the transform panel for an object? Does it use an average? An example can be seen in the first image. The lines are not a uniformed width.
Also, how are strokes converted from pts to pxls? For instance, if I make a stroke that is 2.3 pt, when I expand the object the width in the transform panel will say 2.3px ; however, I thought the point to pixel conversion (even for a 72 dpi screen resolution) was different. An example can be seen in the last two images, where a line was made with a specified stroke width and then expanded.
Is there a way in Photoshop to gradually decrease the width of the brush stroke along a path? Like a classic lightning bolt...
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have created a path with the pen tool (the brown part), and now I want to extrude it, but it extrudes the whole containing block (See image below)

How do I extrude my path?
I'm currently using Illustrator CS6 as a test version and when I use the pen tool to make a beaver (school assignment), it all end up in one layer. I want to have a new path-layer from every line with the pen tool, so I can remove lines in the layer panel too. At the moment it's one layer that have a picture of a beaver and I can't see the individual lines I've drawn. When I used CS5 recently I didn't have this problem. Is it a setting I can change or does it have something to do with the news in CS6?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I use the pen tool to make a path with a fill, the fill updates immediately and correctly, but the path highlight (which usually displays as long as I'm working on a given path) only shows up when I hover my cursor above the path itself. Also, and this is a lesser issue, Illustrator's splash screen displays "Tryout." It came with CS6 MC, and none of the other apps are in trial mode.
