I have been using gimp for a year or so to do simple editing on jpgs, but today i have starting working on easy multi layer images.
I am making a small portfolio. I made the image 8.5"x11". Added a gradient to the background. Added 2 text boxes, aligned them and finally imported an image as a layer. I then resized the image layer so it fits on my page.
All is great except I want to add a simple 2 pixel border with the Script-fu decor>border script. However it seems no matter my active layer the border is applied around the whole 8.5"x11" image. How do I make gimp only put a border around my image layer?
My decor filter has disappeared from the filters menu. Was using it yesterday, no problem. Today, it's just gone. I have uninstalled Gimp and reinstalled it several times and that does not work.
The version I am using is 2.8.4 and I have a PC with Windows 7. I have been using the program for the last two months with no problems and the more I use the more I like it.
Just to add the issue, I installed Gimp 2.8.4 on my wife's computer, and the filter is there.
I've been using GIMP for about a month now and still learning different things about it everyday. I know how to do borders and frames, but personally, I don't like the ones they have on GIMP. They're kind of bland and boring. Is there anyway you can download new frames and/or borders?
1st post and new to gimp. this is my 1st attempt at anything with gimp. No previous experience with any other photo editing tool other than Microsoft Paint.
I have a company logo with a white background. I want to make the white backgound dissapear(become transparent) and than create a white border around the graphics in the image. After this editing I will take this edited image and place it on top of a larger image and it will some "pop" and not blend in.
I am trying to re size my text layer so that the borders would align with the edges of the text, but every time I adjust the upper part of the layer the text itself would shift downward, cutting off the lower part of the text. Is there a way I can conveniently adjust the layer so that it looks like the text fits the layer.
Example I am trying to achieve is something like this.
I have installed the fonts but the amount of color editing and customization I can do is very, very small. For example I want to take a letter have it colored purple (so far so good) and then give a border to the letter like thin line of yellow (no option that allows me to do this).
we are talking about pretty big letters here but I cant seem to be able to do this. I am trying to edit this pre existing image and trying to enter dialogue bubbles with thin colored borders.
As for the dialogue/though bubbles themselves I can seem to find any "insert shape" inside gimp, you sometimes characters are yelling or crying or just speaking normally has to be shown by the dialogue bubble but I cant seem to be able to do it.
I have used photoshop before but it is very complex and I feel like I can work with GIMP much more easier and faster but none of these basic options seem to be available. Are there addons to install so I can work easier with than making every single dialogue bubble from scratch? *shudder*
Edit: I am using both the new version and the 2.6 version... I find the new version absolutely terrible, especially when it comes to saving your work as an image file but if necessary I will work with both versions.
I am having an issue with Gimp after taking a heart shaped transparent bg image and filling the transparent parts with a flame pattern, and adding new image objects as layers, every time I flatten the image or export the image to jpg, there is a noticeable white border around the heart! I DON'T want that!!! how can I export or flatten the image without?
What I'm in the process of doing is creating shapes in Sketchup and exporting them as 2D images. Obviously, those images have a lot of "dead" space around them that I would like to reduce.
I'm able to select a rectangle selection tool and select my image, with the goal of pasting it into a new image which will have much less "white" space around it. My question, is there a more precise way of doing this? I need to cut out an even pixel space, for example, a 128 x 64 (both sides need to be even), how do I know what is the size I'm cutting out? And sometimes it's hard to do correctly do it with my mouse, is there a way to adjust the selection borders with the keyboard instead?
i was wondering if it would be possible to get a plugin or maybe there's a way to do this that would 'blend' the border of one image that you paste on top of another, larger image. so that the borders wont contrast - like a black dot on a white page.
if that description doesn't make sense, imagine using such a tool on a a black dot on a white page. it would make the outer part of the circle transition from black, to dark grey, to a lighter grey, and then to white...
When I upgraded to 2.8, UFRaw didn't come along for the ride.
I tried installing UFRaw into the GIMP2.8 folder, but I get an error message saying "The program can't start because libgdk-win32-2.0-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
I have a Genius 8x6 tablet, and it worked fine with 2.6. 2.8 doesn't register the pressure on my tablet. I checked another thread about 2.8 not registering tablets, and it said to configure input devices and change the pen setting. I don't have a pen option on the devices list. All that shows up is is the core pointer/ mouse.
I'm trying to put a watermark on an image using the opacity bar for the text. However, the text remains 100% opaque until I get down to 50% opacity, at which point it completely disappears. I thought there may be something wrong with the text layer (not sure if that's the right term.. layers and paths, etc. are all new to me), so I tried it with other tools such as the eraser and the same problem occurs. Is there a bug in my program or am I just really new at this?
So I've finally upgraded to GIMP 2.8, finding that .abr was native. I've downloaded thousands of brushes, only a hundred work, MAYBE. I'm confused because even the brushes that are not in .abr form do not work. Also, sometimes if I try to fix the brushes by uninstalling and reinstalling there will be random ones that work and then old ones disappear?
basically I have a Genius MaxFire G-12U Vibration joypad controller, I wanted to map to certain actions and plug-in calls, but unfortunately this appears at the status of the device in "Configure Input Device" menu:
When the actions have been mapped to the different buttons, and after GIMP has been reset, the actions do not happen after pressing the associated buttons.
GIMP website did not show an entry for such menu.
Using GIMP 2.6.12, Windows Vista 32 bit, 4 core Intel processor.
I've saved a file with paths as .xcf and I can call up the paths again in the paths dockable dialogue. But I can't actually see the anchors or edit the paths. How can I continue working on a path I was working on before?
i have just installed GIMP 2.8 on to my computer running UBUNTU 12.04, everything seemed to go ok with it opening up, but when i tried to select a tool, the tool icons go through the motions of selection, but non of the tools will work.
After pasting in a PNG, and it's made into a Floating Selection layer, she wanted to scale it down using the Scale tool. So she clicked and dragged till she got the right size, but upon clicking on Scale (in the little dialog that pops up with the Scale tool), the dialog box vanishe ... and the layer went back to its original size. She tried multiple times and got the same problem.
I even got her to click on "Cancel" rather than Scale in case it was a traslation error, like the translator mixed up the Scale and Cancel buttons, but nope.
Been using GIMP (2. for a while now, it's been nearly a year on this PC (Windows 7 64 bit, relatively recent hardware, 8 Gb of RAM, etc.) and it's worked smoothly up until a couple of days ago when it stopped working as intended all of a sudden for some reason.
Whether I use my Wacom tablet or the mouse none of the tools that normally allow you to draw (pencil, brush, airbrush, etc.) work anymore (cropping, distorting the image and the likes work fine though), doesn't matter if it's a brand new document or an old file. The funny thing is that when I go to the "Edit" menu it'll allow me to rollback and undo whatever I did with the aforementioned tools, even though there's no trace of it on the empty canvas itself.I tried to uninstall and install the software back but it didn't do the trick.
when i open gimp, the file formats listed at the open file dialog includes .eps but when i open any .eps file an error appear that says "could not interpret postscript file".
Having a problem in Gimp 2.6.11 on Windows 7 x64 system. You can watch the video, linked below, but the basics are: I do a selection, scale the selection, make a new layer out of the floating selection result. I try to run a RGB Noise filter on the new layer and no preview shows in the filter dialog or it doesn't show correctly. If I anchor the floating selection into the original layer, instead of making a new layer out of it, the preview shows correctly. Is this a bug... or?
I've got a real problem here with the Script-fu Gradient Overlay. Every time I try to use it and click on any of the buttons - see screenshot for full list - it shuts Gimp down. There's no warnings, Gimp just suddenly vanishes and if anything is being worked on then all the changes are lost.
When I try to use the smudge tool in gimp (2.6.2). I click on it and I try to smudge the image. But gimp seems to ignore the tool. So I decided to play with the Opacity, Rate and even the scale. No luck.
So then I thought, ok maybe the changes are to small for me to see. So I decided to zoom all the way in and try the smudge tool. No change at all.
The odd thing is it is a single layer image. I just tried an experiment, I opened the photo I wanted to smudge with clicked on the tool and tried blending the area. Then I closed it, it didn't ask me if i wanted to save the "changes" I just made.
The smudge tool does not have an circular with an line across it saying I cant use it. Here is the image I am trying to fix up .
This tool lets you extract foreground from the active layer, using the SIOX method. To create a selection, set roughly foreground you want to extract. Select as little of the background as possible. As soon as you're finished (the selection is closed) the rest of the image goes dark. Now draw the line trough the foreground, going through all colours that will be used for extraction. Then after releasing the mouse-button, only the actual foreground is selected.
I made a new template, and my Pencil and PaintBrush would not work. When I tried to draw something, nothing appeared. The icon was there, but no drawing area. I tried to ajust it with the [ and ]. Nothing changed.
I have my background on the screen; click text tool, specify font, size, color - then i click on my background expecting the text-writing box to appear, but instead a mini-copy of the text tool options box appears, of no use or function. How can i get the text-writing box to work?
PS An empty box appears on the background, supposedly to write in, but it doesn't work. I type and nothing happens. And, there is a huge cursor bar (?) that extends down the screen.
The blur tool does not seem to be working like I thought it would work. I am using version 2.8.4.
When blurring a section of a digital painting or photo, it goes to a certain point and then does not seem to blur anymore regardless of how much I keep painting over the area with the tool.
When I apply a gaussian blur filter to the entire image, I can get much more blur to occur by choosing a large blur radius.
I would think my continuous painting with the blur tool would be the same as choosing larger fill radii in the gaussian blur filter. But, as I said the tool stops blurring anymore after a few strokes over an area.
I have tried changing all the different settings - Rate=100, Opacity=100, change the size and style of brush, etc.
I have a created a workaround for the problem by doing something similar to the trick for sharpening that is mentioned in the Blur Tool documentation:
-Duplicate the image layer a few times. -Go to the duplicate layers and apply different levels of blur. -Choose the Clone Tool. -Select 'Image' and 'Registered' from the Clone Tool's control window. -Activate the Clone Tool on the layer that has the amount of blur desired. -Switch to the original layer and begin painting the blur with Opacity set to about 60 and use brush dynamics where pressure controls opacity.
This seems to work okay. But, it is a lot of extra steps to get the blur to go further than the Blur Tool allows.
It would be nice to have a blur radius setting in the Blur Tool's control window. Could that work?
I'm a huge beginner when it comes to GIMP, but I wasworking with multiple layers, and suddenly my filtersstopped working. I used Drop Shadow for 7 layers, and mylast three layers won't filter!
Did you make a selection? Maybe small? And maybe even made its border invisible (ctrl-T)?
Your filters may be working on just a handful of selected pixels, rather than the whole image. This happens to me every time I usectrl-T to hide the marching ants.
