GIMP :: Downsize Large Architectural Drawing Images From TIFFs To JPGs
Apr 23, 2011
So, I have used Gimp to downsize large architectural drawing images from Tiff's to jpgs. Well, I always thought I was downsizing them. In the past, the process always seemed to make the files more usable in the application where I need to use the architectural drawings without a significant loss in quality.
I will open a tiff in Gimp, save as jpg, export if prompted, then select quality of 40 or 50 percent, and the result is a usable file that is significantly smaller than the source tiff file.Today, the source tiff which is 900 mb in size is being converted to jpg which is 6 or 7 mb in size, totally unusable.
Additionally, if I simply open the source in Gimp, save it to another directory from Gimp without making any changes, the file also grows to 6 or 7 mb. What am I doing wrong this morning that I have not been doing wrong for the last 6 months?
Using version 2.6.11 in Ubuntu 10.10 if that matters.I have a version of 2.7 on my Windows XP OS, and it will lock up trying to open these drawings.
It's curious, because, at 900 MB, I typically can use the drawings without even altering or downsizing them. What I really cannot understand is why Gimp is causing unaltered files to grow in size when saving them.

LR 4.3, Windows 7. I've started using Snapshots as a convenient way to capture in-process images. But, I can't find a couple things I'm sure HAVE to be in here somewhere...
1. The "generate virtual copies from all the snapshots of this image" button
2. The "export all the snapshots to jpgs or tiffs or whatever" button

I received a drawing from a client where the architectural ticks display very large. The leader arrow shows as the correct size but the dimension tick does not. I went into the dimension style manager (dimstyle) and everything seems to be in order. The tick size is set up to be 1/16". I tried to dredge up out of my memory the autocad variables that mess with the size of the archtectural ticks like "dimasz" and "dimblk", but with no luck.
Currently using Autocad 2013.

I'm having some trouble saving large, print-quality jpgs at 150 dpi. It seems that photoshop will only save the files, as long as they don't exceed a certain physical size.
The size I'm trying to save right now is 37" x 33" in inches or "5550 x 4950" in pixels.
When I save the file, even if I move the compression slider down halfway, it'll save, but it won't allow me to open it again, saying "invalid jpeg marker type found."

Until recently when I saved a 1000px x 1000px file as a jpg at 10 in CS6 on a Mac with Snow Leopard, the resulting file would be about 600-700k. Now the same process results in at file twice that size, about 1.2-1.5 mb. I have tried everything I can think of to find the source and correction for this phenomenon. Save for the Web works normally.

I have GIMP 2.8.8 installed on Ubuntu 13.10 amd64. The machine has 32Gb of RAM, and in GIMP preferences I have changed "Maximum new image size" to 4Gb and "Maximum undo memory" to 12Gb. However, if I try to open a large image in GIMP. it crashes while trying to open it - for example, this 15427 x 12549 pixel tif image available from the European Southern Observatory web site: [URL]
When I try to open this or similar sized images, the progress bar at the bottom of the file open dialog goes across to 100%, then GIMP stops responding for 10 or 15 seconds, and then the entire GIMP window disappears with no error message from either GIMP or the operating system, System Monitor shows no gimp process running, and the only entry I can find at the relevant time in any of the log files in /var/log is this:
Nov 22 06:15:36 nick-desktop kernel: [ 1458.563084] traps: gimp-2.8[4160] trap int3 ip:7f508c2dd3d9 sp:7fff6768a050 error:0
The same problem happens if I try to create a new large image - select New from the file menu, enter 12000 pixels for the width and height in the dialog, and OK. After 10 or 15 seconds of no response, the GIMP window vanishes. I can open or create and work on smaller images without any problem.
I also have the Windows version of Gimp 2.8.8 installed on my laptop, which is running Windows 8.1, and there I have no problem opening or creating the exact same images.

I bought one of the new iPad 3’s (AKA The New iPad) and can’t get the latest version of iTunes to sync JPG’s with Windows 7 64 bit.
I have cleared the iTunes cache and reinstalled iTunes but nothing is working. To test it I transferred the same library to a Mac and it synced with the new iPad with no problems. After much trouble shooting I have narrowed it down to iTunes on Windows 7 64 bit is not working. I have tried this on a couple of different PC’s and also have an iPad 1 and 2. The iPad 2 sort of works but the 3 is terrible. Apple really hates Microsoft and makes no effort to develop for it or conduct quality control.
After escalating this with Apple Care I got to meet the engineer who works on this. After some research he admitted that iTunes does not work with JPG’s larger than 9K pixels per side. This upset me so I made an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar to complain. The option they gave me was to return my old iPad 1 and 2 for 100% cash refund on an Apple gift card.

Is there a way to zoom into sections of large images to iWarp them without cropping, iWarping and then copying back over the original image? It's just the tool doesn't allow you to zoom in so it can be difficult to see what you are doing sometimes and performing localised iwarping to requirement necessitates doing this + the iWarp sometimes creates minor differences in the edge of the cropped layer creating problems when trying to re-add it

I have an old dwg that I used to add new data to. I also inserted a block produced by Revit to get a building elevation. I am not sure when or how it happend, but my drawing scale units are stuck on arch. I am talking about the bottom right hand corner of the screen on the status bar where there is the spot to set drawing scale. When I open by clikcing the arrow all the scales are in architectural units. I can add a custom scale of 1"=100', but it does not otherwise appear in the list. I wasn't going to wrry about it, but when I layout a plan/pro series they do not seem to be scaling correctly (and I cannot find a place to specify what scale I want the views to be at). UNITS, -DWGUNITS & -AECDWGUNITS don't fix it, they are all set to decimal, etc. Using the seetings tab to change the drawing settings, everything is set to feet, there is no place to specify arch units, the 100 scale drawing is shown as a custom scale.
This is C3D release 2012, on a 64bit Win7 Pro machine, everything is up to date.
Where I can change the units for the drawing scale?
C3D 2012 on 64bit Win 7 all up to date

I have to add dimensions to an architectural drawing in model space
The file is drawn in decimal units (1unit=1meter)
Now I have been asked to ad dimensions in feet and inches to the drawing in order to make it usable to UK
I know that the solution is to use alternate units with Architectural units format, but how mach is the multiplier that I have to use?
I have no experience in British metric system.
So I left the multiplier 25.4 as AutoCAD prompt.
2.81 meters equals to 5'-11 1/4” ?
I’m using AutoCAD 2007

Since I switched to Mavericks... premeire Pro CC has been corrupting my still images. I have imported them a dozen different ways to no avail. I have clean wiped my computer... ditched the CC suite and redownloaded it. Nothing works to correct the issue. I even bought a solid state HD and upgraded my graphics card.
What is happening is half of the pictures information is lost. Each picture has a slightly different corruption but I can see the image fine if I scrub through my timeline. Its only when I hit play or pause over the clip that I see the corruption.

I'm coming from paint.net, which is bloating tif images to the extreme......I work on tif's for work (engineering revisions) as well as multi-page tifs.Needless to say, I need to get up to speed on Gimp as fast as possible, as work places don't like a learning curve The image editor used by others is atrocious.
I see the Gimp will open multi-page tifs, but how do I save them back as multi-page? Or is this not possible?
And how do I go about drawing a filled rectangle? A good deal of my work is digitally "whiting out" things on technical drawings. I see the brush tool, but not a filled rectangle.

I am trying to load single pages from multi page tiffs, convert them to monochrome (dithered), flatten the image, then save them as single monochrome, ccitt group4 tiffs. - all through scripts.
The multipage tiffs contain pages in grayscale and color which were created using the old style (problematic) JPEG compression option.
I have tried other tools, such as libtiff (modified with a patch to handle the old jpeg compression), and the latest version of imagemajick. Unfortunately they cannot correctly convert the files, whereas gimp can, but only one page of the multi-page tiff at a time(gimp crashes if I load a 5page document (as separate images) then convert each image to monochrome, flatten and save in one session)
the scripting function for loading tiffsfile-tiff-load does not expose the options to load individual pages, or to select loading as images or as layers, which the visual file load/import does.
How I can achieve this using a script.? Manually is not a problem, but too time consuming for large (eg. 200page) tiffs.

How to create very convincing 'Dusk Renderings', see: [URL]......
I tried this and despite my efforts being not quite as good as that produced in the video I was pleased with the result, as follows:
This is a cropped image created from a 'prt sc' of a Revit sheet view on which I had superimposed the png image over the jpg, having followed the instructions in the video. However, when I came to export the project to dwfx, the jpg file (the sky) disappeared leaving only the png image as shown herewith:
Can I not paste one over the other within the Revit environment, and get the expected result perhaps? Can the complete image only be achieved in a picture editing program?

I am new to Illustrator. I am using CS6. I used Image Trace to turn some .jpgs into vectored images. My printer is saying they are not vectored images but rather that they look like .jpgs that were placed in Illustrator. Every tutorial that I have read and Youtube video that I have watched says that Image Tracing something makes it a vectored image. What am I not getting? Is there something further that must be done after Image trace to turn something into a vectored file?

I have two jpg images in two separate windows. I want to put one of the jpgs onto the other...like layering it over a particular part of the other image. When I attempt to do this the image doesn't show up in the receiving window and disappears from the originating window. I also tried to do a regular copy and paste between open windows and that doesn't work either.

I just bought a website template and there are certain files that won't open in gimp like psd's and even some png's and jpg's (though the ones I need most do). My girlfriend was able to open the psd's in photoshop. Anyway to get all these files to open in gimp?
I've attached the psd, the png and jpgs wont attach (maybe because they are tiny 70 byte files that dont matter). (Im using Windows 7 64 bit)

When I export a Web JPG from GIMP and it offers me a sliding Quality barthat goes 0 - 100. I want to know if that's an equivalent to the similar JPG quality setting in Photoshop? The reason I'm asking is that my research on Photoshop indicated that JPG output quality settings above 75 were"theoretical." In other words, there might be measurable improvements inJPG quality past 75, but they will be imperceptible by the human eye. If the Quality settings are basically the same in both pieces of software?
