AutoCad :: Rotating Arbitrary Angle To Ortho
Dec 14, 2013
Is there a quick way of achieving the following:
You have an object rotated at an arbitrary angle
You want to rotate it back to a 90 degree line by snapping it.
I can do this by measuring the arbitrary angle and then rotating it manually based on my measurement.

Is it possible with X5 to rotate a video arbitrary number like 8%? I know the video can be rotated 90% but unsure about just a minor rotation. If not possible in x5 maybe in x6?

I have some 300 images, all handheld shots done in an on-location studio set. They all need varying amounts of image rotation since they're handheld. There's a beaded curtain in the background, so manually I use the ruler tool, draw a line along a strand of beads, and then image/rotate/arbitrary.
I need to create an action that will (1) do the arbitrary rotation and then (2) save and close the file.
However, when I record this, the value of the rotation of the sample file I'm working is what gets recorded (not surprising). In other words, if image A needs 0.28 degrees of rotation, that's not what I want for image B which might need -0.15 degrees instead. The action recorded 0.28.
Is there a way to create an action that will simply rotate according to the ruler once I've drawn it?

i would like to rotate an object to match the angle of another. I can measure the angle but there are many decimal points and I want it to be exact.
One method i have employed is to change the ucs - z setting to align with the object to be rotated then click it and select a point that intersects the other object (this case a line) and then the 2nd snap is somewhere along the line.
this works although sometimes i have to rotate a second time 90 deg. or 180 to get proper orientation.
Is there method, or hidden snap?

I'm trying to create a dynamic block for plywood. I have the stretch parameter working so that I can stretch the plywood to the needed length. I also have set a rotation parameter based on the various roof pitches that we use. The problem is I would like to be able to rotate the sheathing to a 45 degree angle and then stretch along the 45 degree angle. Once I rotate the sheathing the stretch does not follow the rotation angle. I have attached the file.

I have created a dynamic block with a rotation parameter&action on an object in the block. My problem is that when I pick the grip to rotate the object it only allows me to rotate it to where my cursor is pointing, if I enter an angle when prompted "Specify rotation angle or [Base point/Undo/eXit]:" say 45degrees the object does not rotate 45 degrees it just rotates to wherever my cursor is pointing

1. How do I make the angle of the Gizmo appear when I'm rotating the gizmo plane with 'e'?
2. Also, how do I rotate the gizmo itself, so that i can rotate it in any ambiguous axis as well if I wanted to.
For example, let's say I'm slicing a hollowed box usnig Shell modifier. I want to cut the box diagonally. I make the slicing plane vertical using x rotatin axis (red) at perfect 90 degrees (this is why I want to see the angle displacement when rotating a gizmo), then becaue I want to cut it vertically, I rotate the plane on z rotation axis (blue) 45 degrees. Now, I want this cut to be slanted. That means I have to change BOTH x and y axis with equal amount to achieve symmetrical cut I want. ("5 snaps of rotating the slicing plane on x axis and y axis" something like this)
What I want is change the orientation of the gizmo itself so that x or y rotation axis becomes the angle I want the box cut to be slanted at.
3. I've been using 3ds max for rendering most of the time, and didn't really have time to ask myself, why is it such a pain in the a** to get the correct effect I want from max? Viewport and renderd product doesn't match at all for me. Rendering should be just a way of making the viewport image much prettier, not turning garbage into an artwork. Because of the difference between the viewport and renderd image, I constantly have to do test render at 320x240 to see how it looks.
When I say the two doesn't match, it includes but not limited to:
-Lighting Both daylighting system and artificial lights(photometric/standard)
-Intensity
-Shadow casting accuracy
-Material
Scale mismatch of rendering and viewport.
-Color
-I'm guessing it may be because of the lighting that the colors are very off.
-Unexpected glow on my model from other surrounding objects.
Sketchup or Rhino shows vaguely how it's going to look when it's rendered, just poor quality. Why is it so not intuitive in max?

I have a line (not a polyline) that i need to extend by dragging one end to an arbitrary location but must conserve the orientation of the line. I then have to drag the other end point in the opposite location to a location that I pick (ie, not a cad feature, but by human eye)
POLAR works good in that i know the angle, but the line is allowed to be drawn wherever, and i need to focus on precisely where i extend the line too and not that the angle is changing.

My new HP laptop has functions assigned to the F function keys, and this disables the autocad functions for these keys. I am told by HP that it is not possible to turn off these functions to allow cad to use them. I just tried working without using the F3 and F8 keys, and I am crippled. How can I assign another key - say Q - to toggle ortho?

I'm using Autocad LT 2012 and ortho is only working vertical. Circles appear as straight lines and arcs won't draw at all. If I copy an object or text from another drawing, it pastes as a straight line. I also can't rotate anything except vertically.

Is there a quick way to rotate an object to match an angle without knowing what the angle is? I am using AutoCAD 2011 now. I was using 2007 and I had an add on command the would rotate an object using a base point and picking the two lines that make up the angle, and it would match the angle you wanted. I can not get that command to load in 2011.

I have a property line that is N 36d19'52" E but needs to be N 12d52'18" E. The obvious and calculated rotation angle would be 23d27'34" but when I rotate the line by the calculated angle it doesn't rotate to the right angle. It's off by 0d11'10"!? When I draw a line by bearing at N12d52'18" E and inquiry the angle between the property line and the drawn line the angle difference is in fact 23d27'34".

Let's say I am inserting a square block into a dwg and want to get it parallel to an existing angled line. Do I have to read the angle of the line and insert the block to that angle or is there a quicker way?

I have moved onto a new machine and there are 2 AC functions I need to change.
1. I used to be able to toggle between Ortho on/off by holding the SHIFT key, on this machine it doesn't activate. Is there a command for this? I know I could use F8 but my hand is over the SHIFT key when I draw so its easier to do it this way.
2. When I activate the MEASURE command AC automatically activates Dynamic Input which makes my cursor jumpy when I move it. How can I stop this from happening? To clarify, I don't want Dynamic Input on when I am in the measure command.

I am running AutoCAD 2012 and i am having a problems with drawing a line. The problem i have with it, i have changed some settings and i can't remember what i changed. But how to change it back.
First let me explain what i am talking about. Once i am in front view and trying to drawing a line vertical and with ortho on, it will not allow me to draw a line vertically either up or down, only horiztonal. It looks like to me that ortho is lock on top ortho only.

how to convert "real world" angles of elliptical arcs into those shown in a dxf file?
Say that I have drawn an elliptical arc with its start angle on 210 degrees and an end angle of 324 degrees. The values in a DXF file, for an elliptical arc, have something to do with the contant "PI" (3.14159). I know that a full circle is 2*Pi but how to do this with elliptical arcs!!

I've been trying to model cut produced by a ball end mill taking an arbitrary 3D path. I know how to do this for 2D paths (and this has been discussed a couple of times on this forum), but I have had little to no success extending this to paths in 3D. I've attached an Inventor file that demonstrates what I want to do, it has an sketch that describes the tip of the end mill and the path that I want the center of the tip to trace out.
This seems like something that should be possible using sweep feature, but if it is then I have not found a way to get this to work. The issue is that I have not been able to effectively control the angle of the sweep plane with respect to the path. In reality, the normal of the plane should be equal to the tangent of the path with the z-component zeroed out.
However, if I sweep using the path and the "Path orientation" then it does not zero out the z-component, if I sweep using the path and the "Parallel orientation" it does not take the x&y tangent components, if I sweep using a guide rail or guide surfaces it also does not zero out the z-component.
In fact, the only way I could come up with to accomplish this would be to sweep the path in 2D and then to use a series of bend part features in order to put things into 3D. So far as I can tell this works, but back calculating the 2D curve is so backwards and laborious that I can't imagine using this for anything. In Solidworks this is relatively easy using the sweep solid feature .

I would love for my 2011 and 2013 to work the same as my 2008 does.
In 2008, when I grab a grip and stretch it with either ortho or polar turned on, I get a little tooltip beside the crosshairs. All it says is the distance and the angle, and whether it is Ortho or Polar. For example, if I stretch to the left with ortho on, it may say
Ortho: 16.55 < 180°
Or if I stretch up and to the right with Polar on, it will say
Polar: 16.55 < 45°
I really, really really want this back! This is not dynamic input, I hate all that ridiculous clutter around my crosshairs. But this little info box is absolutely invaluable!
I have checked the Tooltip setting (on in all versions), And I've been playing with all the Dynamic Input settings, but I can't get it to work. The odd part is that 2011 was working until about a week ago. I'm not sure if 2013 was or not.

Thats pretty much it. While pressing F3 to toggle Osnap, if Ortho is ON it first turns it off and then F3 would toggle Osnap. The same thing happens with F8 if Osnap is ON.
I checked out the CUI and for some reazon it had a lot of different shortcuts to toggle Osnap and Ortho, so I thought just keeping F3 and F8 would make it work, but it does the same thing.
