3ds Max :: Create A Number Of Models / Scenes And Applied Materials / Textures To Using Bitmaps

I created a number of models/scenes and applied materials/textures to them using bitmaps that are in another folder.  
 
I then created sub-folders for each of the models/scenes because I wanted to export to .obj and then copied the .max files to those folders.  I then opened those .max files and the materials/textures were showing as normal.
 
I then exported to .obj, so in each sub-folder I then had 1 x .max, 1x .obj & 1 x .mtl files.  Problem is that if I now open the original .max files in the normal way, the materials/textures are not showing and a message comes up saying that the bitmap files are missing.  I don't understand why this is, seeing as the .mtl files are there in the sub-folders along with the .max & .obj files.

I am looking for a good lightning solution to use in a number of scenes. I looked at Draper's pflow lightning setup but could not get it to work correctly.. in the short framecount I need it to occur.It looked great but only over 600 frames.

I am animating splines and I think I can get that to work ok.. but

3ds Max :: Viewports To Show Only The Applied Textures

I'd like the viewports to show only the applied textures without any kind of directional lighting but I just can't figure out how to do that.

I removed all lights so the model was pitch black then tried changing the ambient color in the environment panel but it had no affect.

3ds Max Modeling :: Exporting Models With Multiple Textures?

I was importing a model with 3 materials / textures. And the imported model's fully textured with lighter color textures than the original ones.
 
And the problem started when I exported the model as .DAE and import it in to Unity, the texture slot (or material slots, I don't know how to call it) was 1 instead of 3 with the original model
 
And this is the original one Were the animated model's texture maps I imported get merged into 1?

Also, I added an independence sword model, is it's texture map get merge into to big 1 above?

I am lookng for a way to allow multiple material selections for a drawing/model

We have components that avaialable in both 304 and 316. We have seperated stock codes for each of the selections what I would like to do is to come up with a way that I don't need multiple models of these features. The deisgns are virtually the same except for the material change.

In previous cad systems I used a tabled system in the model that would allow you to vary paramters such as Iproperties or even dimensions in one model.

This elimated duplication of work includeing double maintenance for the models?

3ds Max :: Nitrous Xref Materials / Textures Not Displaying?

We've currently switched over to 3Ds Max 2012 for production and installed the latest Hotfix and Service Pack 1

Our studio pipeline revolves around xref objects to manage large scenes.Upon switching to nitrous the xref materials are not visible in shaded Material Colour the Xref material appears in the material editor and it references to the appropriate .max file Yet in the viewport it will still appear shaded without textures/materials. It will render without issue but we need visibility in the viewport.

This does work under directX/opengl/software but the performance is greatly crippled.

I have recently landed a job at a design company as an instrument design technician. The last time I touched CAD was about 6 years ago so I have been going through some tutorials. Unfortunately the comany I work for use 2000i so it isn't the most up to date version or anywhere near for that matter but nonetheless I have been perservering (I have both 2011 and 2012 on my pc at home).

Im fairly new in using 3DS Max and would like to ask for tips in how should I go about creating my first game design.

I have few questions and I hope that members of the forum enlighten me on these issues:

1. How do I define the dimensions of things in 3DS max so that it follows the iPad/iPhone specs?
2. Should I create the models/characters separately then import them all together in the map that I created or I create them all together in the same file with the map?

We are looking for a workflow example of developing casting models into machining models.

Typically our castings are made from different materials (Fig-1) and then machining (Fig-2) are created from these castings.

Is creating the casting as an iPart (with different materials) and then deriving the machining from the casting the proper method?

Doing it this way seems to force us into making a machining for each casting material instead of just one machining that is an iPart. How should this be set-up for BOM purposes and for use with Vault (Base Version)?

AutoCAD 2010 :: Create 2D Drawings From 3D Models / Using Layers With Different Colors

I am using Autocad 2012. I need to make some  2D execution drawings from a 3D model. I tried to use the following commands: flatshot, flatten §ion plane. All of them are having bad results. From all this 3 commands the closer to my needs is the flatshot. But I am working with many layers which have different colors, so when I will generate the 2D views I need to see the same color as the layers have (each color is for a particular medium). 

I am using this command without showing the obscured lines.When I am generating the isometric views with the flatshot I am seeing strange objects (UFO), is far away from the original model, you can see in the attachment.

It is possible to generate somehow 2D views (front views&isometric views) seeing the color which every element has, and it is possible to correct somehow those ugly isometric views ( the guys from autocad should do something with this, because when I am generating a isometric view the 2d drawing that I received is completely different from the 3D model !).

 I want to make the drawings using the 2D views, because the 3D Models are very big (50-60MB) and it is very hard to work with them!

In AutoCAD 2006 and previous versions when we had to create a new STANDARD material with a pattern/texture map and attach it to a selection set of objects, first of all we had to load render.arx (arxload “render.arx”) and then we had to call the following function:

The above function checks if a material with name matname exists and if not then it creates a new STANDARD material with name matname, material color (-1.0 -1.0 -1.0), which means derive the color from an object’s ACI (diffuse color), color-weight factor 0 (the amount of diffuse color) and a pattern/texture which is described in the list (list matfile 1.0 1 nil nil nil 1 1). The following table describes the pattern/texture arguments:

matfile name of the bitmap file
1.0 amount of map color to use
1 tile(repeat the patterns)
nil u and v scale factors (AutoCAD used the default values)
nil U and V offsets (AutoCAD used the default values)
nil (reserved by Autodesk)

It was not necessary to define CreateNewMaterial with all these arguments, but I do it for future purposes.

In the attached file you can see the definition of MaterialExists, CreateNewMaterial and some other functions:

MaterialExists: Checks if a material exists.

DefaultNewMaterial: Default values for new materials. I have used the AutoCAD defaults, but one can modify them accordingly.

CreateNewMaterial: Creates a new material. If one needs more information on the meaning of the arguments I think Ralph Grabowski’s “Tailoring AutoCAD Rendering” is a good start.

AttachMaterialToEntity:Attaches material to objects

MaterialByLayer: Modifies an object to have material by layer.

AttachMaterialToLayer: Attaches material to a layer.

As you can see I don’t use vlax functions, because I write the code for OEM programming purposes. You can change the functions accordingly.

I have a Revit file with over 1,000 materials and associated appearance assets.  It was created in a previous version of Revit before library support.  What I want to do is create libraries from them.  However, the only instructions to add them one at a time using dragging and dropping.  That will take me days to do.  Is there a way to simply create an asset or material library out of multiple materials from a project file at one time without having to individually select them?

VideoStudio :: Pan Scenes In AVI Clips Jerky In X4?

I am importing some .avi files and burning to a disc. Most of the .avi clips are fine on the DVD, but two that have panning sequences are very jerky. I checked the source .avi files and they pan smoothly.

I've explored changing the Speed to Quality slider and also the Frame Type (Upper/Lower field first) setting to no avail.

I have 2 files that are acting weird. They were created earlier this summer but when I open them now, 99.9% of the geometry is invisible with nitrous and the file is very laggy. I want to get an alphabetized list of the geometry so I can start merging in pieces and keep track of what I'm doing.

Any way to export a list like that?? Or better yet..how to trouble shoot the bad files?

3ds Max :: MassFX Warning With Scenes Using PhysX

I get a warning when I open another max scene on another machine here at work, it says:

"The MassFX authored in this file was created with a newer version of the plugins. Forward compatibility is not supported so things might not behave properly."

I am currently using PhysX for Max version: 2.7.1.0202.1800 and PhysX System Software 9.11.0621.

Third party plugins installed for Max being used in the scene are: Rayfire 1.57.10; Orbaz Particle Flow Box #2 ver. 1.07 and #3 ver. 1.53. I've gotten this warning in scenes saved from another PC, opened in another, and not even using any PhysX or PhysX capable plugins.

3ds Max :: Unable To Snap To XREF Scenes?

I have got some levels for games I'm working on and a lot of the items have to seal off perfectly, etc etc.

I often cannot snap to any item in an XRef Scene under some circumstances. I think that these are scenes that are failing because some are referencing each other and access stops for some reason...

In the examples:

Scene 1: Referencing Scenes 2 & 3
Scene 2: Referencing Scenes 1 & 3
Scene 3: Referencing Scenes 1 & 2

When editing Scene 2, I am able to snap to Scene 3, but not Scene 1. I don't know if it's something about a reference being an overlay (which all are) and the ordering it loads... I know that in the XRef Scene dialog it lists them (in example above) as Scene 3 above Scene 1 ... but I have not experimented with removing one and inputting them in another order... since it seems that any time I delete a scene from the list in an XRef scene dialog, Max crashes.

Maya :: Geometry Not Contained In Certain Scenes

A collegue of mine will save a file in Maya 2012 (a character model) yet, when I open the file, I only see the cameras and image planes. The HUD shows zero faces, verts, etc. When he opens the same file again, all the geometry appears.

Softimage :: Not Able To Open Saved Scenes

I am running Softimage XSI 7.5 Mod Tool on a Windows Vista 32 bit. I cannot open any of my saved scenes, when I do I get an error.

I have done some research and found two things, one, that using a registry fix for windows is the cause of this problem, and two, that the fix to this error is to run the "runonce.bat" file from the "bin" directory. I used a registry fix recently that not only didn't seem to improve my computers performance, but it also stopped XSI from working properly. Apparently lot's of people have had this problem and the fix is fairly simple.

However, when I ran the runonce.bat file, it failed to work, I ran it again this time with a command to produce an error log, and this error came up on about the 25th line: "oleaut32.dll: Registration failed; Result == E_ACCESSDENIED".

Here's where it get's confusing. I created a second windows user, this one not an administrator, logged onto it, and ran runonce.bat. It did not produce the error seen above and instead, when I run XSI from the second user, I can load scenes just fine. But I log back onto the admin account, and the problem persists.

Obviously I'd like to be able to use XSI from my admin account like normal, instead of having to use an "XSI" account. I am fairly certain that runonce.bat's error "oleaut32.dll: Registration failed; Result == E_ACCESSDENIED" is the reason that runonce.bat seems to have no effect.

i need to Create aligned CS line with increasing Chainage Number and Name through a center line (yellow line). The CS lines are 25 meter apart, it can be done by ME command, but can not automatically increase the Chainage number and CS number.

the CS number (CS-1200) is increasing by 1, like CS-1200, CS-1201, CS-1202, ....also The chainage number (CH Km 29+975) is increased by 25, Example: CH Km 29+975 , CH Km 30+000, CH Km 30+025, CH Km 30+050....

i would like to do it automatically, otherwise i have to keep editing for a long time,
