3ds Max :: Models Turn Themselves Inside Out
Jun 13, 2011
I am have a spate of issues with editable poly models turning themselves inside out - visible from the back, or underside, but not the top or front, and then you only see the face on the inside as it were.
When modelling it will sometimes happen when I do a mirror clone and then the original poly mesh turns itself inside out. Applying a normal modifier isn't much useful.
It is also doing it to some reloaded models which were previously fine.
It is a right pain as, while you can carry on modelling and render the model out (but only with MR materials) it makes seeing things in the viewport very difficult.

We are looking for a workflow example of developing casting models into machining models.
Typically our castings are made from different materials (Fig-1) and then machining (Fig-2) are created from these castings.
Is creating the casting as an iPart (with different materials) and then deriving the machining from the casting the proper method?
Doing it this way seems to force us into making a machining for each casting material instead of just one machining that is an iPart. How should this be set-up for BOM purposes and for use with Vault (Base Version)?

There are many examples of creating rectangular patterns, but not many, if any, of interrogating existing patterns.I have attached the files and a screenshot of a rectangular part inside an assembly. The part contains a rectangular pattern of holes and workplanes.how do I get hold of each proxy of the workplane in the pattern? In other words I don't know what to put in the for loop at the end of this code fragment:
If _invApp.Documents.Count = 0 Then MsgBox("Need to open an the assembly document") ReturnEnd If If _invApp.ActiveDocument.DocumentType <> DocumentTypeEnum.kAssemblyDocumentObject Then MsgBox("Need to have an Assembly document active") ReturnEnd If Dim asmDoc As Assembly Document asmDoc = _invApp.ActiveDocument Dim asmDef As AssemblyComponentDefinition asmDef = asmDoc.ComponentDefinition im occurrences As ComponentOccurrencesoccurrences.
[code]....

I really enjoy this new draw inside feature in Illustrator. But, I find that it does not always work. It seems to be grayed out sometimes. For example, I have drawn a shape with my Wacom tablet using a blush. I then converted it to a shape instead of keeping it a stroke by expanding it. But it will not allow me to now draw inside of it, even though it is a shape.

I have a really large sphere and have put a camera on the inside to see the inside surface. I have used the normal modifier to flip the normals and so have the skin on the inside. Something is going very wrong at this point because I have this ugly shadow line that I cannot get rid of and I also seem to not be able to light this interior, when I use an omni light it makes no difference. Where am I going wrong?

I have this strange situation.. i use the Arial font inside my cad drawings and when i print my paperspace layout, the text inside the viewport is a little bit more "bold" then the text i put directly on paper space.
Maybe it's a trick to know what text is placed where, but i want all this to be uniform, same thickness. Is there a system variable to correct that issue?
See the image below: It's a 400 DPI scan from an impression i did.
Up to COUPE C1 is the text inside the viewport, under COUPE C1is the paperspace text. Both are the same height... but difference tickness.

I was experimenting with 3d model texturing in CS4. However whenever I zoom into the model I was trying to texture, it becomes very pixelated to the point of where I couldnt tell what it is supposed to look like. The only way I can tell what it is anymore is while using the camera rotate, the model once again comes back into focus with the sharp edges that I desire.

We just got our updated release of AutoCAD 2012 and I noticed it now supports direct import of Pro-E models, which is what our engineering department uses for one reason or another...
I'm currently using 3DS Max 2011... If Max 2012 support direct import of Pro-E models like AutoCAD is now doing??? It would be REALLY handy! Currently they export a either an STL or OBJ to me that I then can import into Max... would be nice if I could just take their native file and run with it!

If i have two viewports in 1 layout: Is it possible to call different models (from different files) in it?
Lets say... ViewportA has model of drawing A. ViewportB has model of drawing B. But Both viewports are in the same layout.
I want to avoid using clipxref when inserting legends.

Why is it that Photoshop doesn't import 3D models for popular software like Cinema 4D (C4D) while the U3D extension of that weird and unpopular unprofessional heavily copied but little used Ulead cool 3D is in the list? I think it would be much more important to be able to import C4D files.

I have a fairly complex solid model built in Autocad 2013. I would like to dimension it now. I have various individual parts plus sub assemblies and weldments etc. What are best practices for doing this in an organized way? Should I copy various parts over to other drawings and dimension them separately? It seems odd to pile everything onto the one model. I know that Autocad is not Inventor (which I am somewhat familiar with), but does it have some similar tools for doing individual part drawings to keep things manageable?

I imported a model and started altering the textures. I created textures added layers details and realized at a point that I need to modify my uv coordinates.
So back in my 3d application I did the changes and exported the 3ds file again.
Now here is my question. How can I import the updated mesh to my current psd and "tell" it to use the textures I modified before?

I am trying to export some Revit models to .nwc for use in navisworks.
I have been getting some odd errors, sometimes I get them, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I will get the error, close the program, re-open, and it will export fine. Other times I try that and still get the same error with no luck.
I need to get these into .NWC files, and doing it from Revit holds more infomation than trying to import them in Navisworks.
Attached is a picture of the error message Revit is giving me...

I've been following one of Louis Marcoux's tutorials on youtube where he animates a gradient map inside a material in the cut out or opacity option thus creating a model reveal animation in the viewport.
In that tutorial I noticed that the animation is subject per material. I was wondering if it's possible to apply an opacity (cut out) gradient ramp to multiple materials at once so that different textures and objects on the one big object (e.g. car with different parts) can be revealed together without having to apply a gradient map to each individual material used and animating each one separately?
So the goal would be to find a simple way to apply just the one gradient ramp to the whole car and animating that.

I'm using Max Design 2013 to render Revit models.
Linking the RVT file into max works well and all materials are scaled visually as expeected. The problem comes with replacing materials.
I'm working in Metric files in MM.
As an example I've got a wall in Revit with Brick, Common material attached, The image file used is Brick_Non_Uniform_Running_Burgundy.png which is 5 bricks wide x 16 brick courses tall. When rendered this look correct on the model.
However, I;ve I drop another Autodesk brick material onto the wall in Max the scaling is messed up. When I've noticed is that the scale on the Bitmap in Max of the Revit material is 3.33mm x 3.89mm The scaling of the bitmap of the Max material (same numbers of bricks) is 1016x1187mm.
Whats going on between Revit and Max that causes this behavior?

How do I align models to an image on the scene? I have a scene with an image of a city in the background (which will also appear on the render) and I am trying to align some models to the buildings on the image. These buildings will be used as a target for attacks.
Steps I have tried so far:
1. I thought of doing everything in the 3ds max's front viewport with the image perfectly aligned to the viewport and then aligning the models to the buildings on the image. The problem here is that I have a space ship entering the scene after a few frames and I see that some sides of the space ship are not visible on the render cause the render is from the front viewport.
2. Secondly I thought of putting the image as a viewport background using ALT + B and then aligning the objects, but this step is very tedious as I move or pan around the scene then the whole alignment is lost.
3. Finally I tried creating a static camera with the image being the main focus covering the entire viewport and then aligning objects. In this way I don't have much play area to send in the fighters that comes down from the space ship to attack the city as the camera is very close to the image.
Trying to master Pflow systems & FumeFX with this project. I really wanted to do this.
I have posted some screen shots:
1. The Image.
2. The buildings aligned using the front viewport.
3. The fighters
4. The Spaceship

(3ds max 2012, mental ray rendering) I would like to know how to separate objects from an imported model. For example, I have imported a bed with side tables, pillows, throw rug, etc- when it is imported into my scene all items are grouped together, so one click, anywhere, selects all items. I have used the Edit mesh function to delete the items I don't need but now I want to isolate each part of the model and apply different material finishes. When I hold the curser over each item they seemed to be named separately, as 'objects'. How do I detach these items from the imported model?

Currently working on a very large scene with many city sized buildings. The viewport ( DX9 ) seems to constantly flicker even with 2 seperate objects that are a considerable distance apart.
Is it simply a matter of not having floating point and im working in the thousands of inches ( system scale )? Is there any solution? Renders are fine but it's going to give me a seizure every time I rotate the viewport camera!
