View 4 RepliesI have generated a gear set using inventor. Now I would like to 3d print the gears. I have uesd the export tooth shape to get the true tooth profile. now I am attempting to use the coil feature to generate the helical tooth. The problem im running into is in the coil tool I can only give it a Revolution and height dimension. The hight is the width of the gear, but I am having a problem converting the helix angle to the "Revolution" perameter. I have read other posts and they say that it is Helix angle / 360. I have tried that and then compared it to the original gear generated by inventor and it is not even close. I need to do this on in internal gear and match it to an external gear.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've read the posts pertaining to coil features along curved paths. The existing solutions are limited in that they must rely on a solid with the addition of a bend feature. How can I create a helical surface structure including multiple bends like the one shown?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem sweeping a curved object over a spline. The object will sweep over a straight line...but not on the spline. I keep getting "unable to sweep object(s)" in the command line. I could be doing it all wrong... I've attached the file.

View 9 Replies View RelatedHow to curve a piece of sheet metal over the outside curved edge of the attached part. I can do it the old fashioned way but was wondering if it could be done in sheet metal which would give me the flat pack automatically (that way there is less chance for errors). There are several of these baffles joined together by a spine and the sheetmetal will eventually go over all of these, and have a few modifications to shape the end profile.
The outer curve is a spline which has changing radius and hence to use a contoured roll would be rather difficult and time consuming (there are also some flat sections at each end of the curves as well).
Autodesk Inventor Professional Student 2013 is the version I'm using.
I'm using 3dsMax 2010.
I have created a big spline. When I tried to "Convert to poly", it doesn't work. Usually, as result, the spline appears with a filled. In my case, the spline disappears. I thought it might be because the spline is not closed, but it is correct.
how I can easily find openings in a spline and/or overlapping vertices and edges that prevent the extrude modifier from working correctly? I very frequently need to import .DWG's and .AI's and many times they have hundreds of vertices. Even after I apply a normalize spline modifier to diminish the vertex count, it can be quite tedious to find breaks and overlaps. I find fiddling with the weld verts also to be a pain (usually removes more vertices than I want). I just want to graphically see it on the screen the problematic areas if possible. Attached is a good example. I can easily see on 2 of the splines the yellow vertex to signify start/finish but on the 3rd spline I don't see anything. There are 2 vertices in the same spot and it looks like 1 white vertex. I've never really used Xview but I'm probably not using it correctly. When I use it I get a bunch of green vertices that aren't in any way overlapping.

Script to clone an object along a spline so that if i modify that spline vertices all the clones are repositioned automaticaly?
I use to apply a Path Constraint to initial object position and then i call Tools|Snapshot to clone it, but this works just for distribute the clones. The path is relationed just to original object, not to the clones...
I have booleand two splines, that were beveld to give them depth, than booleen together to make the shape of a car. I am having trouble completing the modeling because of the mesh. Is there anyway to make the mesh better (as in like a grid)?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi already searched for a similiar problem, but I did not find any.. I'm new to 3ds Max and im using 2014.
I created a spline from a shape, which is the upper spline. The lower spline is created by the create line option. With refine i added a few vertexes.
Now i want to connect the vertexes but it doesnt work. The only 2 vertexes that are connectable when i click on connect (a little + appears when I hover those vertexes) is the lower right and the lower left. When I use cross section, all the vertexes connect anyhow, but not the way I want it.
i often see ways of making particles follow splines. But is it possible to create spline paths generated with pflow ? using 3ds max 2013

I know there is a "Create Shape From Selection" button on in the Editable Poly dialog. But this gives me the ORANGE lines from the control cage, not the smooth lines on the subdivided object.
I am trying to LOFT multiple ellipse shapes along a spline path to create a door handle. But as soon as I choose 1 section, MAX creates the shape. I cannot figure out how to create the shape with multiple cross sections. I have attached a screen shot and a pic of the door handle I want to create.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been working on creating a sword in 3D Max for the last couple of days and have run across a problem. At the base of the blade, it goes up straight for about an inch and then tapers out and up another half inch in a curve. From there, the blade tapers/curves back in, then out once more to create a thicker end of the blade, width wise. I need to know a simple way of doing those curves. A friend of mine suggested using quick loops, then individually scaling them to get the curving effect. That just seemed like it took too much time to me, and I thought there must be a simpler way. I tried adding a taper modifier to the selected area, but that didn't really seem to do much, except give the opposite effect that I wanted.

View 2 Replies View RelatedTrying to model a car dashboard, not the wheel or gears but the big shape you hit your knees on if you sit in a car. Following some simple box modeling to get the basic form, apply turbosmooth, add some edge loops to get the right amount of curvature on some edges, great.
I'm miserably failing the next step, which is adding in details like lcd screen and vents. But even something as simple as making a crease that goes left to right across the whole vehicle, since those loops end up breaking the smoothing and the nice subtle curve is gone.
So next I tried geting the basic shape and adding an edit poly modifier on top then another turbosmooth on top of that. But it's getting very out of hand with the amount of faces.
Another idea was putting in the detail first on a flat plane, then using FFD 4x4 to bring the curve back, but then I'm not able to pull out the pieces that came from the box modelling method, how the armrest area comes out from big piece itself.
Am I missing a method of doign this? I don't want to have to resort to just unwrappign it and adding my details with a normal map. I want to use real geometry, and I've seen some great models in the past with this kind of detail, but don't know how to get there.
I'm trying to create an external involute spline (ANSI B92.2M) Fillet Root Side Fit 26.9mm x 1 mm x 26 teeth x 38 mm long using the spline generator with Inventor 2012. I created a test shaft"M-182-AMA.ipt" that is Ø26.9 mm x 38 mm long with 1 mm radius on each end of shaft.
I use the following steps:
1. After creating component "M-182-AMA.ipt" I select Design tab>>Power Transmission>>Involute Spline.
2. A window appears that has the caption "Involute Splines Connection Generator".In the Dimensions section I choose "Splines Type: ANSI B92.2M - 37.5 deg, Fillet Root, Side Fit, 26 x 1.00 x 38 x 5H/5h" and change the Length to 38 mm.
3. In the Shaft Groove section I use Create new, and I push the Reference 1 button that turns blue, I then select the od feature from the model and I get an error(see attached pic "error1.jpg).
I changed the 26.9mm od to be 27mm and it still gave me the error.

How to create a flow arrow label for a feature line that parallels the curve?
I've a vague notion that this could be done with a dynamic block and a few fancy expressions. I'm comfortable with expressions, but I've never used dynamic blocks at all, so I wouldn't know where to start.
To be clear, I know curved text is possible, but I'm looking for a curved line (ie an arc) that would look 'parallel' to the arc of the feature line (ie have the same centre point). This would have to be dynamic to allow for different radii and for flipping to the left and right side of the feature line.
Having a time getting ribs to align 2m below top of ridge beam, and connect to curved wall below. I created one, then arrayed, but the radius changes at each 2.5 degree interval. I don't think I should have to calculate the % radius change to get the beams to do this. Some constraint button maybe?
Not sure if editing a wall profile is the best way to model this, but it's working.
I want to extrude a big number of pillars to a rather complicated surface and that works out fine. But each end of the pillars warps around the surface and I want them just to go up to it and stop with a resulting horizontal face.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have created a 3D model of a helical gear. The process followed was to use the profile of one tooth, which by the way is a true involute shape, then displace that profile and rotate it the amount needed to equal the face width of the gear and to match the helix angle. There is also a profile located at the midpoint of the gear. The profiles are all closed polylines.
I then used the LOFT command to create a solid tooth. It looks exactly like it should. I tried to use the SWEEP command but that rotates the profile 90 deg. from the path. Extrude won't work because the path is a 3D line in space.
I then invoked the POLAR array and put 28 teeth around the center of the gear. That too looks exactly as I would expect it to.
BUT - when I try to UNION the 28 teeth into one solid, AuotoCAD 2013 stops working. And that occurs the moment the cursor touchs any part of any individual tooth. If I try to UNION the array by dragging a window over it, it stops when the window gets about halfway over the model.

I have a sheetmetal assembly with helical shaped parts. I need to place about 50 little brackets and some corresponding rollers along the length of these helical pieces. The spacing is even so a pattern would be perfect, except I don't know how to get it to follow the shape of the part. The brackets are located to slots in the helical parts which were made with a rectangular pattern in the unfolded state. I tried to do a "feature pattern select" but it only saw the rectangular pattern as it is in the unfolded state (a straight line). I then gave up on patterns and started working on manually mating them into place but realized that the geometry of the slot was distorted (theory) and didn't leave me with any useable surfaces.
