I am trying to make my render look realistic, like a photo and am having some trouble finding the write settings to play with.
I think you just need to use the render setup, lighting and environment & effects. Please see what I used bellow. what settings I have over used, under used or not used to achieve a realistic looking image.
- Some textures need to be fixed, but I am having trouble with the leather. I have used the A&D leather template with mid level reflections, high samples, A/O and a bumb. Also a light and dark texture in the diffuse slot with (Ambient/Reflective Occlusion)
Used settings:
- Photometric Lights
- mental ray
- FG - medium
- 5 bounces
- Noise filtering High
- GI mulitplier and photons per sample up
- max num. photons per sample few 1000
- Average GI photons per light up a few 1000
- Decay
- render elements:
- Global tuning all around 2
- mitchell
- Contours
- displacement sudiv max
- Effects - brightness and contrast
- mr photographic exposure control
- with preset, photographic exposure, image control

I what to know who many max users use the DBR feature, because i hear from AD that this is a very rare used feature.
I use it very often for previews and sometimes for final rendering, because it's faster to activate (compared with NetRendering and split scanlines)

I am rendering an interior animation of a church for a client and after rendering a few frames with backburner on my offices network, I noticed that a lot of the frames have black faces that appear on the walls, then disappear in other frames. In particular the central column in the first attached image, the second image is how it should look. I've created both photon maps for GI and Final gather maps for most of the animation.
I'm running 3DS Max Design 2011
on a Dell Precision T5500
Intel Xeon CPU E5520 @2.27 GHz
2.26 GHz, 12 G Ram

I'm getting a render error on my reflections, at first I thought it was a distributed render/network problem, but it also comes up in a non-distributed render. I've tried raytraced and mapped reflections and it still appears. My environment map is an HDR image, but it also happens with a tif file. It's like the reflection level is changing between buckets.

Description:
1. The model is completed.
2. Renderer is assigned to 'mental ray'.
3. When in the material editor, when i click on "Arch and Design", the drop down template is MISSING.
Installation was perfectly fine.

i've got this photo where i've cut out a person, but due to all the shadows in the photo it's hard to cut around the hair without making it look like just a chunk of color. So does anyone know of ways to create realistic hair from scratch, or how to add on to this one to make it look not so cut/paste.

I have a few brochure files - and I want to make them look like this:What do I mean by "this"... I want to give them this folded look as not to have them on my portoflio so flat and plain...
Is there a way I can make like a template in Photoshop - including the "warping" so that the paper looks slightly curved? Would an Action be the way to go?

Was wondering if there are some ways in converting a highly realistic rendering of an object generated in a 3D program into a more illustrative, simplified, alittle less realistic version in Photoshop?
The object has plenty of silver reflections, HDRI environment map reflections, precise shadows and highlights, etc. I just want to make it look more generic and not as polished I guess.
Are there filters or plugins that will do this in a plug in play method or is it more prodedural and manual?

I'm trying to make a snow spray effect (you know, when you run really fast in the snow you kick up this fine sheet of snow...) - it's for a signature on another forum :>
But, as a near-nab, and not a lot of experience with the basic brushes, I can't really get a realistic spray effect coming off. Maybe I'm just rushing it too much and not really experimenting with different brushes...

how to make your render "pop-out" of the signature area. It gives a really cool effect and is really simple to do. When we are done, it will look a little like this.
OK, to begin, you need to prepare your render. I am going to use this one.
Feel free to use it if you want to.
Open up a new image with the dimensions of 400 x 125. Now you will need to make a background. I'm not going to give any real steps on how to do this, but if you look around on this site, there are many tutorials showing you how to make them. Try using this one, as it is the way I am going to make mine. Don't add the render to your background though. We will do that later.
Following those steps you will get something like this. If you want to add a border, now is the time to do it. The link to the tutorial I told you about above will also show you how to do this.
You now have both a background and a render. Press Ctrl + A to select everything. Now go to:
Image ---> Canvas Size A window like the screenshot below will appear. If you made the size of your image 400 x 125 like I told you, simply set the settings to the same as shown. If you have used a different size, double the width and height of your image and type what the numbers come to into the boxes names "Width" and "Height". Set the offset X and Y values the same as in the screenshot.
Press "Resize".
Your canvas will now look something a little like this.
This is just how you want it.
Now for your render. Open it up and it will appear in a new window. If its to big, resize it. Now go back to your signature window and make a new layer. Copy your render and paste it on to your new layer. A handy tip to know is when you press F11, it will bring The GIMP into full screen mode allowing you to see what you are doing clearly. You should get something like this. Yours will have little dotted squares all behind it though like the image above. Its OK, its how it should be.
Now add some text or whatever you want on your signature. A cool way to make text look good is to type what you want out on to your signature in white, move it to where you want it to be, set that layer's mode to "Overlay" and then duplicate it untill it looks nice. Heres what I got. Again, squares should still be present.
Now merge all the visible layers by pressing Ctrl + M. Select the first option. Now right click on the layer in the layers window and select "Alpha to Selection". This will select all your signature. Copy it by pressing Ctrl + C. Then go to:
Edit ---> Paste as New
This will open up a new window with your signature in it. Go to:
File ---> Save as . . .
Save it as "Popout Signature.png" it must be in a .png for it to work.
Thats it your all done! This is what I got.

I have experienced when rendering video from Photoshop that the color looks especially bad in Quicktime Player compared to what it looked in PS. I read that there is a color shift issue when Rendering Video from Photoshop due to the lack of color management in some video players. I know this is more a player issue than a Photoshop issue, but I want to be able to make my video look best across all players.
Is there any kind of general rule for an adjustment I can make?
I can't seem to find much information on Google about this particular shift with regards to PS' Render Video.
