VideoStudio :: X6 / Sony HDR-CX290 - M2TS File Crash
Nov 11, 2013
I tried to provide as much information in the subject line as possible. I have been keeping my VS installations up to date and so I have VS X6 installed on Windows 8.1. I just purchased a new Sony HDR-CX290 camcorder. I have transferred 3 or 4 video files from the camera to my computer using the Sony transfer software which saves it as a *.m2ts file. VS X6 can open the files, I can place it in my timeline. I can run the split by scene and other edit utilities. I even have gone through the process to test and create a disc without any issue. However, if I try to PLAY the clip in the project window, VS x6 crashes. I have uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled VS x6. I have tried reinstalling codecs. The files play without any issue in Nero and Windows Media player. Windows Movie Maker seems to open the files without issues as well. However, I have had my system to make discs via VS for a while now so I would prefer to not have to use a different program. Especially since I have invested in VS x6. I am outside my warranty window so from the sounds of it, I have no recourse to let Corel know if this is a bug or a known issue. I have installed VS X6 SP1 as well and it hasn't fixed the issue.

I am evaluating VS Pro X4 (trial version) and one of my tests consists in importing a .m2ts clip, strip some parts of the original clip and save it in the same formats (codec, resolution, aspect ratio, file) as the imported clip.
The original clip is a NTCS HDMV file format (with the .m2ts extension), H.264 video 720p60 (16:9), digital Audio Dolby (AAC).
I'm able to do the first 2 steps without any problem. However, when I want to save the result in a file, I cannot find any way to indicate the software to save in the same format as the original clip. So I am looking for any way to save the video in a 720p60 (59.94 to be accurate) with the same video and audio codec that can be read by a PS3 console (H264, AAC) as a .m2ts file.
Is it possible to do this using VS Pro X4? Or do I need to use a non-trial version? Or do I need to use the Ultimate version? Or is it simply impossible to do this (yet)?
Things I tried:When I want to create a video file, and choose "as per project's parameters". But it appears they are set to NTSC SD for DVD-like output. If I go in the project's parameters menu, there is no way I can set the resolution to 720p60 HD.Among the AVCHD outputs in "Create a video file", I only find 1080i and 1080p resolutions. Same for Blu-Ray outputs. Why is there no 720p resolution in both outputs? In the "Customized" output, there is no way I can set the resolution to 720p60 HD. Is it normal?

I have a h.264 video file in .m2ts format, captured using a TV card, and I want to burn this to an AVCHD DVD. I've been trying to do this with VSX4. I don't want the video to be re-encoded because it's already in a suitable format. If I open X4, and then Create Disc and insert the video, the video plays fine and everything looks OK. However, when I click Burn on the final screen, I get a message saying that the video will take some time to render (oddly, since I've chosen the option not to convert compatible files, and VS seems to be taking notice of this choice because if I de-select it, the video size on the disc indicator increases). If I click OK, the rendering process seems to start but it jumps to 3% and then nothing happens. It just sits there.
I thought maybe VS had a problem with the video, so I tried inserting it onto the timeline, and I can edit and output it from there without any problems. But, I can't burn it to AVCHD DVD without re-encoding it, which I don't want to do because it will reduce the quality of what is already a compatible file.

I independently verified the M2TS files using MediaInfo.exe to identify that they were 16:9 ratio. But Video Studio Pro X5 seems to "misread them" at import as 4:3 ratio.(both as I hover cursor over file before importing into VSx5 and after import) The result is that the loaded file in VSx5 has black vertical framing added on the left and right of the video image in the preview window and any derivitive video files. Additional Info: the M2TS files prior to loading into VSX5 play in Windows Media Player at 16:9 aspect ratio with no black vertical framing.
There don't appear to be any patches yet for VSX5. Since obviously the VSX5 file attributes themselves are whats in question here, I've put both the output of MedioInfo.exe and VSX5 for the M2TS files here:
MediaInfo Output:
General
ID : 0 (0x0)
Complete name : H:VideoEditing2012_5_20_0_8_56.M2TS
Format : MPEG-TS
[Code]....

Taken video clips with that camera? It uses mpg4 ACE (which is not a codec known to VideoStudio) and my PC tells me that the clips come at 30.05 fps. What can I do now? Why the clips aren't 29.97 fps?

I downloaded a copy of Photoshop CS5.1 to try with my Sony NEX-5N. When I try to open a RAW file, I get a message that the camera type isn't supported. The Adobe website indicates that the Sony NEX-5N is supported. How do I get the trial version of Photoshop to recognize the RAW files from the Sony NEX-5N?

organize the pile of images and various videos that we have taken over the years. It seems like LR is optimized to organize image. But can it work with my Sony AVCHD video and mp4, mov formatted videos as well? And if so, How good is it at these tasks?

When I try to import a .m2ts file into After Effects CS6, there is no audio track what so ever not even if I do the RAM Preview. However, when I play the clip in Windows Media Player, the sound is totally fine. But whenever I import the clip, After Effects detects the video as having no sound. It doesn't even give me the option to check the little speaker icon in the timeline.

I'm having with x3 when I import MOV files from an IPhone 4s onto an HP pavillion dv7 4270us laptop with 4 gb, 1.80ghz.
The playback is very choppy and almost paralyzed, while the audio does fine. Also, x3 constantly shuts down with a brief error message telling me to contact corel support.
Should I be converting these video clips before I import them into my capture folder on corel?
I'm trying to preserve quality since the iphone4s takes a pretty nice video, definitely rivals my canon dv and most HD flip cams I've seen.

It's an element contained in a .vsp. Right now I'm trying to "connect" & render 1 video file + 4 .vsp (inttertitle card.mp4, segment1.vsp, ... segment4.vsp). Each contains segments that run continuously and I need to combine into just one video file (mp4 HD format). But every time the render reaches that file (above) (17% of the total render), it crashes. There's nothing else on that timeline except that mp4 file and a wav file. I don't understand why it's happening. I have done it successfully before in Youtube HD format.
Smart Proxy is enabled, but I don't see how that's relevant to rendering. I have tried re-converting the video file into versions: one has .mpeg4 codec, the other has .H264. I also downloaded & installed VSPX4 SP1, updated my codecs, drivers, downgraded Quick time. But the result is still the same as far as rendering the whole project goes: crashing at 17%.
There were enough RAM & CPU when I did the rendering so I don't think this is a hardware issue. I also tried disabling Smart Render just to see if it will react positively.
There came a time also when the render passed 17%, but it crashed when it reached 94%. Interestingly, when I rendered segment1.vsp only (to mp4 HD), it also passed 17%, but then it failed to finish also. Right now, I'm going to re-convert the file to a different format to see if the whole crash is related to mp4 (I have rendered many mp4s just last week and they were successful).
So I'm curious, is there a limit to how many "connected" .vsp files one can render successfully? And is there a certain mp4 type that VSP can't handle properly?

I am trying to encode to BluRay a compilation of Canon 5D2 HD video plus some stills (shrunk to about 1000x800 pixels). This has the Canon audio track plus some background music from mp3 files. When I try to encode it runs for about an hour and then crashes. The problem report data says vstudio.exe has crashed with the fault module CoreAudioToolbox.dll. A bit of digging says CoreAudioToolbox may be to do with Quicktime so I have done a clean install of that but still have the same problem.

my problem to Corel e-mail support but after all the work for filling out the form the website showed my a message after submission of the form that the requested page changed its location - nice! After using the back button of the browser (to try it again) all form fields were empty again.
So I am trying here before returning the product. I am using Videostudio Pro X4 with the Sevice Pack 1 and no more updates are found by the internal updater.
I try to import videos from my Sony HC96E MiniDV cam using FireWire. I am importing into a Lenovo ThinkPad system with Core i7 2nd Gen and 8 GB RAM. First of all when using the program's DV Quick Scan method I can see no preview picture in the preview area. Also I here the video's sound for about 1 sec and then it stops. I can use the PLAY, STOP, FF, RW etc. buttons and they control the camera as usual with FireWire and MiniDV cams. But: As soon as I start the importing process with Quick Scan or the normal Rec-Mode Videostudio crashes. Nothing happens - trying to use any of the programs buttons and controls only leads to Windows telling me that this application no longer answers and has to be closed.
This happens all the time. I haven't been able to import a single scene from the MiniDV tape, yet. I also tried another legacy firewire driver but this didn't improve the situation at all. For a test I also installed Windows Live Movie Maker 2011. With this program everything works perfectly: preview is there with sound and importing of the whole 60 mins tape worked flawlessly.

I have VS Pro x5 and if I try to use DV quick scan, I get an error message saying :-
"Corel Video Studio Pro The program has encountered an unspecified error and has stopped functioning. Please contact Corel Technical Support and send the dump file for analysis." Followed by the path and file name of the dump file.Windows then closes the program and "attempts to find a solution" No contact details are given in the error message. From the Corel web site it appears completely impossible to contact technical support. I just keep going around in circles to faqs and knowlege bases.

I am using VS10 to edit old VCR tapes and burn to DVDs. I have edited the video with out too many problems and I wanted to add some audio voiceover narration to the video.
As soon as I click "start recording", the program freezes and the PC crashes so that I have to manually switch the machine off to recover the situation.
By the way, I have been able to add background music tracks without any problems at all.

i bought VSP4x about a month ago to try to get back into video editing (was originally using Media Studio on my XP machine but it isn't supported on Win7) and was working fine with video acquired through the method capture -> edit - > share. but once i started bringing in videos from other sources it started going bonkers. one source i get my video from is a screen capturing program called Bandicam. it creates standard Mpeg encoded VBR AVIs. i would editing my footage cut, and snip where needed. add some text and then render. as soon as it hits 1% of rendering it will come back with a unspecified error and give me a dump files to send to tech support. i then proceed to find tech support but was unable to find any sorts on the website that wasnt going to cost me $20 just to send an email. i searched everywhere i can after that for a solution. couldnt find one.

I purchased VS X3 on Feb 5, 2010 as an upgrade to X2. I did not try before buying (my bad), I just read the feature list and it sounded good so I plunked down my dough. VS X3, although well meaning is an albatross. No matter what was tried, I was never able to successfully burn a DVD using the authoring module supplied. I have continuing program crash problems when working with mixed content, apparently caused by the transitions between them. For instance just two days ago I was making a short video with AVCHD and some still JPEGs Putting certain transitions between the media causes VS X3 to crash when reviewing and/or rendering. Remove the transition and it goes ok. This behavior is ongoing with X3 and very annoying. So I downloaded the trial of X4 and opened the exact project that was giving me fits earlier this week and guess what? Low and behold it actually works as expected.
My point to all this rambling you may be wondering? IMO X4 offers painfully little in new features and is more of a patched up version of X3 that actually works. Imagine that concept. No more editing in X3 and authoring in X2 for me that is if I plunk down another 80 bucks. I feel a bit put off by my whole X3 experience and feel X4 should be offered to us who bought the POS, non working X3 for free as a good will gesture or something. X4 mostly appears to be a debugged version of X3. Let me qualify these feelings by stating I haven't had a chance to work with X4 enough to be sure it's better, but my comments are going under that assumption. It's hard to think it could function overall worse than X3 does.

I've just got an iPhone 4S and shot a test video to edit. However, when I load it and try to create a file, VS10+ crashes every time within a few seconds.
All I'm doing is trying add a few simple titles with the output file being 'same as project settings' so the output should be mpg4, PAL, 720 x 576. This is the first time I've tried editing iPhone video and I've never had this problem with any stuff that I've edited in the past.
