Revit :: Rotating - Making The Pivot Point Not Movable?
Aug 2, 2013
im having trouble with a rotational object. I Basically made a basketball system in the category of specialty equipment. i made several different families in the same category and have nested one big family in specialty equipment.. I then loaded the nested family into a Generic face base template and change the caegory to specialty equipment, after completeing the steps i then loaded it into another family that is just specialty equipment. My problem is that, im either getting constraint problems when i set up my angular dimension parameter and try changing it's angle or when i do get it to change angles the pivot point keeps moving around...The main point is how do i get my pivot point to stay still and have my angle parameter change without errors?

We are just trying out Maya on the OSX Platform.
In the tutorial that we are going through, we are asked to select 2 curves, center the pivot point, and then hit the 'Insert' key to allow us to move the pivot point, and then holding down the 'C' key we should be able to move the pivot point along the curve.
Looking around we found that if you hit the 'fn + left arrow' keys you are meant to get the same as using the 'insert' key on the PC, but this is not right, and also when you try to hold down the 'C' key it does not allow the pivot point to be constrained to the curve.
So where is the 'Insert' key on the Mac?

I am puzzled about how to zero out rotation my object's pivot point when I rotate said pivot point using the "insert" key (on a pc). Furthermore, any subsequent object I make after that has its pivot point off just like the first object when I rotate its pivot point. In fact, even when I start a whole new scene, the pivot point rotation of any object is off just like the first time I rotated the first object's pivot point in a previous scene.

I have a character model I got from the Evolver site before it went offline.
I need to set the pivot point of the eyes to be at the center of their meshes so I can use it in Face Robot.
I do this by clicking on the eye object and "Affect Pivot Only", "Center to Object". This works but when I export the model as FBX the moment the export has finished my eyes have both jumped to the the floor and my pivot is still in the correct place. When I import the FBX into Softimage I see the eyes are now on the floor. I also have the same when I try to do the pivot point in Softimage [URL]....I am a competent modeller however a begginer when it comes to Autodesk's software. Is their some property on the model that could make it peform liek this, does it have something to do with the bones/skining?
i have spent the last 2 days trying to move an eye balls origin

have a question regarding audio float on an object:
some objects react from a certain point with sound by just using a simple box in height for an example...it grows in the height from bottom start point...but if i use the width the movement is going into 2 directions instead of 1 ...i tried to move the pivot but it has no effect....is there a way to tell the reaction he has an another start point ?

I have some objects (corridor / intersection corridor / surface / grading ...) in civil 3d 2013...When we rotate the 3d objects , object rotate pivot point about (0,0,0, or any place x,y,(z=0)..So rotated 3d object (if the Z= High value) can't be seen / can be seen as a point.
how to change the object viewer pivot point ? (not using steering wheel or zoom extents because of first time rotating objects seen so far )

I'm animating a picture, have the limbs on different layers, so I can just simply use the free transform tool to rotate them into the good position.
Although it's a pain to always reset the pivot point from the center. Is there a way to make Photoshop remember where I want the pivot point to be?

How do you lock the pivot point of a light to the light itself? I thought just adding a Axis node would move the light and pivot point but the pivot does not move. Is there a way of parenting them together?

1. How do I make the angle of the Gizmo appear when I'm rotating the gizmo plane with 'e'?
2. Also, how do I rotate the gizmo itself, so that i can rotate it in any ambiguous axis as well if I wanted to.
For example, let's say I'm slicing a hollowed box usnig Shell modifier. I want to cut the box diagonally. I make the slicing plane vertical using x rotatin axis (red) at perfect 90 degrees (this is why I want to see the angle displacement when rotating a gizmo), then becaue I want to cut it vertically, I rotate the plane on z rotation axis (blue) 45 degrees. Now, I want this cut to be slanted. That means I have to change BOTH x and y axis with equal amount to achieve symmetrical cut I want. ("5 snaps of rotating the slicing plane on x axis and y axis" something like this)
What I want is change the orientation of the gizmo itself so that x or y rotation axis becomes the angle I want the box cut to be slanted at.
3. I've been using 3ds max for rendering most of the time, and didn't really have time to ask myself, why is it such a pain in the a** to get the correct effect I want from max? Viewport and renderd product doesn't match at all for me. Rendering should be just a way of making the viewport image much prettier, not turning garbage into an artwork. Because of the difference between the viewport and renderd image, I constantly have to do test render at 320x240 to see how it looks.
When I say the two doesn't match, it includes but not limited to:
-Lighting Both daylighting system and artificial lights(photometric/standard)
-Intensity
-Shadow casting accuracy
-Material
Scale mismatch of rendering and viewport.
-Color
-I'm guessing it may be because of the lighting that the colors are very off.
-Unexpected glow on my model from other surrounding objects.
Sketchup or Rhino shows vaguely how it's going to look when it's rendered, just poor quality. Why is it so not intuitive in max?

There's a great bog eyeball, which, as most eyeballs, is not perfectly spherical, and has a bug bump where the cornea juts out over the iris area. The eye is open, with eyelids above and below the iris, the upper covering the top of the iris somewhat. As the eyeball rotates, it should deform the eyelid, esp. the upper eyelid. What's the next way to make eyelids conform to the eyeball as it rotates, we can use cloth if necessary, but if there's an easier way, with constraints, lattices, etc. Like if there's a lattice on the eyelid whose control points get pushed away by the front of the eye, then fall back as it rotates away, or something..

Notice the top point on this line. I've faked the rotation that I'm talking about. Is this possible to do without destroying the line, adding a white element above it to look like I cut if off, etc.?

Imported points and I have a label style to label tree sizes automatically, but when there are many trees near each other labels start to overlap. So I will typically rotate the label style 180 degree or drag the label, but I am curious if its possible to have label always stay horizontal no matter what my rotation angle is.

Issue: After rotating the "1st Point" then rotating the "2nd Point", the Center axis of the "1st Point" moves. Is it possible to perminetly have the "1st Point" rotating axis stay in its original location?

So I have a survey of a roadway that was created 15 years ago and was converted into autocad civil 3d 2012. No problems there, however, I am going through the survey and rotating the COGO points (ie Traffic Signs, Utility Poles) and the text to be parallel to the roadway. I am in UCS World and have no problems rotating the points and text to what I want. THe problem starts when I rotate the drawing using UCS 3P so that I am looking at a portion of the roadway that is parallel to my computer screen. Now the text and orientation of the signs etc are no longer parallel to the roadway and did not rotate when I rotated the entire project.
Now I was under the impression the points were to rotate automatically to what I set them as, ie parallel to the roadway. I'm sure this is an easy fix or I am not understanding something.

I'm having a real issue with Revit that I can't get my head around or find documentation on.
I have a model setup and linked a DWG file. The DWG is a topo survey drawn in real co-ordinates. The DWG is linked center to center then then I moved and rotated it to suit the orientation of my new building in Project North. See image 01.
I've then aquaired the co-ordinates from the DWG.
I've change to True North and rotated the view. See image 02
All seems to be OK. If I detach and re-attach this DWG using the shared co-ordinated it ends up in the correct place so I've started work on my model.
However, I've noticed that when I close and re-open my model or force ther DWG to reload it shifts position and rotates so I have to detach and reattach. See image 03

I am currently working with a point cloud inside of revit. But, The point cloud comes into revit in a geospatialy correct position. Therefore, it is skewed and not near the origin where you would normally model in revit. I need to be able to rotate my project without actually changing the position of my objects.
I use CAD alot as well so the best way to describe this would be, in CAD, being able to set your UCS to an object, and then later on reseting your UCS to world.
The main purpose of all this is to be able to bring my floor plan into a sheet without it being rotated to the same orientation as the Pointcloud.

I have a colleague who has counciled me that sometimes it makes sense to create mass-elements for complicated gabled roof elements. Since I am pretty darn new to Revit, I am bringing in some old 2D dwg information (plans and elevations) and I'm trying to use this information to generate an in-place mass that is my roof. I'm essentially extruding gabled roof information from this geometry. So far so good. But when I try to rotate this information I find the program unwilling to do this. I have a suspicion this has something to do with the fact this in-place mass is either being hosted by the intitial horiontal working plane, or it is "pinned" to something I don't want it to be pinned to.

I created a project with multiple linked Revit files in it and I'd like to rotate the models in their own files to be "North/South". I understand choosing between True North and Project North, but I can't tell which I'm supposed to rotate because when I rotate the actual model and bring it into the host file, it's not accurate. Am I to bring it in to the host and then rotate and move it into position and then publish the coordinates? I have tried that, but then when I go back to the linked file and import a AutoCAD background drawing by it's origin's, it doesn't line up.
Is there a tutorial online somewhere that describes the process for rotating a linked project file in its own file to be North/South and then import it to the host file and establish (publish) coordinates so everything works? Do I just need to re-export to AutoCAD to modify the origin point for the DWG file?

I have seen several posts about rotating a view on a sheet and the text not remaining readable.
I have seen the posts that say to rotate the view then add text... What if you didn't plan that far ahead - are you just stuck?
Is there any new developments on this?
I have a client who needs to be able to this without having to rotate all the text in the project.

Middle layer black filled dote or square.
Bottom layer do something strange to it (I inverted for this sample)
Once you've set up the 3 layers activate the middle (black filled circle) layer and select the move tool. Now move the black circle around with the mouse...
As the circle moves the color will show up in the circle..
