Revit :: Modeling Rail Track
Nov 23, 2011
We are currently looking at how to model rail track in Revit to avoid a Bentley solution (Microstation / MX). A piece of track curves left and right in plan and up and down in section whilst at the same time twisting. We can ignore that it is track, effectively all want to do is extrude a shape along a 2 axis curve whilst twisting the shape.
It is possible to use a swept blend to create a twist along one curve in either axis, but not both axes as far as I have worked out. To make this more difficult the swept blend will also only let you sweep along one curve at a time, so if it was snaking in plan on a flat surface each curve would need to be set up and sweep over and over which is not really a suitable solution.

Is it possible to define custom Rail Types in Rail Track Layout Utility for AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2013?
There is only combobox with predefined Rail types 49, 54, 60.
I found: "The rail type defines the standard turnout types (e.g. 49, 54, 60 etc.)or other user defined types "
, also there is mentioned, that "...pre-prepared turnout types that are written in the XML file ara_switch.xml"
I can't find that ara_switch.xml file.

We have a project that has been upgraded to Revit 2013. When creating railings using the new railing types, top rails and hand rails disappear/are not visible seemingly at random. For instance, when a railing is created that contains railing profiles in the non-continous rails dialog box in addition to a top rail, the top rail and extensions are not visible in plan, but the rails created in the old non-continous dialog are visible.
This seems to occur only in our upgraded file. New projects seem to display the top rails and hand rails consistently.
Also, with railings that contain a "Wall" type extension, the extension return occurs at a 90 degree angle even if it is set to have a fillet. Further, in some instances, regardless of whether the rail is flat or sloped, the end wall extension return will display as two separate rectangles overlapping (i.e. it looks "broken"), instead of a clean, continuous railing. This seems related to the "direction" that the rail sketch line is drawn (a line drawn from the bottom of the screen to the top will have a broken railing, one drawn from the top of the screen to the bottom will not).
I know that scolding the Autodesk software developers isn't going to change anything, but I feel the need to blow off a little steam. The railing and stair "improvements" for this release are really not worth much. It's still much more time consuming (and frustrating) to model these elements, and with poorer results graphically, than it is to simply draw them. It's still not possible to dimension them properly, place balusters where you want them, make multi-level stair towers join properly, get the up/down arrows to display correctly, and a host of other issues. It's incredibly frustrating and baffling that there are so many issues with such a core component of the software's functionality.

When cutting video shots in sync with a music track how can I remove part of a clip and replace with a new shot. I know there is a replace clip facility but there appears to be no way of editing the new clip. What I would like to do is leave blanks in sync with the music and fill in correct length of shot later. The same question for overlaying video shots of an interview and holding sync when returning to interviewee.

In VideoStudio 6, how does one connect the voice track to the video during the editing process?
My specific issue is that I have to go back and edit material sometimes that precedes the voice track I already have laid down, but when the time frame of the material after my new edit I have to go back and drag the voice track to the proper location. I would like to be able to permanently "attach" the voice track to the specific video clip and have it follow that clip as it is moved, time wise, during the editing process.
Is there a means to make this happen?
PS - I realize there is a work around way - just publish each clip and then rebuild the final project but that is NOT what I want to do.

I see that you can split the audio from the video. Can you do the reverse and link the audio back into the video say after you split, cut and mute an off camera scream? It would just make it easier to add clips before the edited one, although it's not all that hard to sync things up.

I'm curious how many of you use note track in the track view/dope sheet? It is running damn slow here, 15sec to add a note track, 30sec adding a note in dopesheet and 1 mins before I could open up the note editor. I doubt it is being useful at all.
Moreover, the infamous Max MotionClip Manager bugs is caused by that... so do you really use it?

I'm trying to find the best standalone or software combo to use for LEED energy modeling simulation submittals. I hope that Revit Architecture 2012 is at least one of the best choices for building the model. I haven't gotten into the modeling and analyze features yet but I'm hoping they are DOE2 compliant?

Typically a door hadle lever comprising initially circular geometry at the rose (fixing point) with round bar (x place)geometry up to and around the initial lever bend. Then the lever elongates in section and curves along a y plane and possible twists along its sweep path. Ive tried mass and create solid using a path with worlplane aligned geometry with fail every time, Also tried in face based generic. The problem is a bit abstract in that only trying to take an image in a manufacturers catalog of a manufactured component and recreate the design phase. Can this be done (sucessfully) simply. If only there were a way to do a swept bleand withj sveral profiles on the path. Hosting circles and then curved profiles is not working for me - cant get uniformity in the way the circles sweep into the curved parts

I'm creating maps and need to create a brush in Photoshop that will draw Rail Road tracks and follow the direction of the mouse or cursor. I'm just looking for two simple lines with cross marks. I need to be able to just brush around in any direction and have the line look like a simple Rail Road graphic following the direction I draw.

Hand rail.dwg.
I have tried to rotate this railing in 3D so that it looks like this photo but I can't. I've tried several different things with the UCS but clearly I don't know what I'm doing. So I'm turning to the CAD community that does. I can draw the hand rail no problem. But the drawing always leaves the finished hand rail in the X,Y plane. I need to rotate it in the Z axis (I think). Here is the orientation I want the railing to look once it's drawn. I need a step by step procedure so I can learn how to do this the correct way for future reference.

We are developing an equation driven 3d spline using VBA.
It generates a 3D spline, guide rail, and tool profile, but we're having trouble figuring out how to do the actual "sweep with guide rail" using the API.
Attached is an .ipt of the shapes our program is generating automatically. The problem is we are having to manually create the sweep after the geometry is created.
How can we automate the sweep with guide rail process?

I'm trying to produce this loft but the rail I really need it to follow won't produce any results. The other ones on the 3d sketch will work just fine but not the regular sketched one. It seemed to work when I made the rail a straight line but I need it to follow the edge of the surface which is a line, tangent to small r3 arc, tangent to line and connected through projective geometry from the original surface sketch.

I work in Rail Development and I am trying to create an assembly that will automatically generate a rail/tie shape and label Top of Rail Elevations, Track name and number, and offset distance. I have been copying/pasting a block onto each track in every cross section. This takes way too long! I have attached an image of what I want the assembly to look like in the cross section.
Before now, I have been typing in all of that information, when there are 9 tracks and 77 cross sections.

I am trying to see if there is a way of distributing equally spaced lines along a curved guideline. Now there is a function to make text follow a guideline and curve in all different angles. What I want to do is the same thing but with strait lines. Is there a way to do it?
Let’s say I am doing a little model railroading and want to draw out my topographic layout first. Now think of a set of winding scale model rail road tracks with wooden rail cross tracks between the metal rail tracks. Now if my actual scale is 1 in = 10 ft and each cross track needs to be exactly 4 ft apart and the winding track has several twist and turns over a 200 in range. Because each twist and turn is made to both accomplish the turning of the track as well as to avoid obstacles, using the radius tool may not always be the best bet. In an ideal world the best way would be to take a strait track and distribute the cross tracks at 4 ft increments and then try to bend the track. However this would cause other problems and throw off the scale. The best way would be to align the perpendicular lines to the curvature of the track. Now if the track had several "S" turns, odd angled curves, or complex reverse turns, it would take forever to space the tracks evenly and cross tracks at equal distances all along the track even when using the radius tool or building in sections and then merging lines.
If there was a way to evenly space lines along a curved guide then I would not need to spend hours setting up radius and drawing lines that need to be deleted or cut short. Equal spaced lines can be accomplished along a straight line using the Align/Distribute function. Though this still has problems when distributing along angles let alone along a curve.
I am trying to somewhat avoid the radius function and lean more towards shaping a compound image set between two parallel lines and one or more perpendicular lines.

First, it selects both, the path and the guide rail, and when it offers me to select the path alone, i don't know how to call it in english, again it gives a warning.

I'm trying to apply the right constraint in stress analysis environment.
How would I apply the right constraint? And to which face of the wheel or axle should I apply the constraint to get right results.
If I'm applying the sliding connection to the face of the wheel in z direction, the model will stop stress analysis with an error of "not enough constraints"
if I apply the sliding constraint to the inside of the wheel on the surface of the circle, I get the result as attached. I get 0 reaction in the Z direction which is wrong and should be zero reaction in x direction. How do I get it right?
The correct way to me would be a constraint that would only take forces in the -Y direction, same direction as gravity.
The wheel should not have any other reaction than in the Y direction. Hoe do I define that constraint? In my model the wheel are free to rotate on the axle.
I'm attaching both the general arrangement and the reaction report.

I have created an elevation of a railing with stretch and array actions, however I have not been able to figure out how to center the array'd picket on the top rail. I've added a move action to the main picket in order to manually center after the railing has been stretched between the two posts...however I'd love to have this automatically centered.
(I originally thought I could have the main picket stretch at 0.5 (so it would be centered), then array in two directions, however there is no angle option on an array paramater).

NO, I don't have any problem with making a helical hand rail along the circumference of a spiral stairway (or helical stair stringer)!
My only problem is that the method which gives the best visual results (viz. extrude or sweep circle or region along spline) will give a "HEAVY" solid model that HINDERS the performance of AUTOCAD.
Therefore I mostly use the extrusion along a 3D-polyline that gives a a lighter model but less nice visual results (especially when using flatshot for 2D model "representation").
Can I set some system parameters that increase the performance when extrude or sweep along a spline ?
Standard I use a lot of blocks to increase the 3D perfomance of AUTOCAD, this however is not possible when a visual continuous hand rail is preferred.
