Photoshop :: Editing Over Network
Mar 23, 2004
On my Windows PC, I am having a strange issue when trying to edit a photo ( between 35 and 45 megs) with photoshop over the network. The smae pic works if I download the image onto my dekstop and edit it from there, but if I try to edit it over the network, odd things happen. It has shut down photoshop, and once it even rebooted my computer.

Would it be possible to have multiple people work in the same Maya scene simultaneously? I was thinking something along the lines of two people on separate computers working on a character for instance, one person modeling the head, the other working on the torso, etc; all of this being done in real time. Is there anything out there (Maya plugin or even some other program) that would allow this? I don't imagine this being very practical for a normal work environment, but it would be a fun way to collaborate and create something faster. Or more likely, it would cause you to hate your colleague all that much quicker.

I am using a structure table as a workaroumnd to get a dynamic point tab;e that also shows station offset. It shows Name, N, E, Elev, Sta, OS
I want the elevation shown in the table to be the elevation that was pulled from the specified surface when I set the structures, PLUS 2 inches.
I tried making them all Null Structures, but I am unable to edit the height of the structure - it wants to be 1.467 and won't change.
I am not even sure what i am doing since I don't use pipe stuff all that often.
My machine is hung on the Edit Networks part dialog, which I *think* is where I was trying set the height of a structure.
I tried creating a new structure and it wants half a million parameters for a simple cylinder, even though the ONLY thing I care about is the insertion point and adding 2 inches for the table.

I am using C3D 2012. I have a pipe network catalog located on our office network server. I have a pipe size shown as 15" that is incorrect, it should read and label the pipe as 16" (see attached image). I don't know a lot of the workings how to edit this from 15 to 16 inch and what I need to do to get it correct for the other C3D users in the office.

I am using Civil 3D 2013. I work in an office where we have a few different flavors of Autocad (LT, MEP, regular vanilla AutoCAD etc...) and versions (2010 LT, 2011, 2012, 2013).
For the most part there isn't much inter-office drawing coordinate that has to happen, but there is the occasional project where multiple disciplines (Structural, Mechanical and Civil Site) have to share drawings.
The specific problem I am having is when I share my 2013 Civil 3D drawing with a user using 2011 MEP. He gets the typical rectangle for the proxy objects (in my case, my pipe networks for sanitary and storm drain). We've tried downloading and installing various object enablers, but there doesn't seem to be one for a 2013 to 2011 scenario. So I setup my parts to be on layers that he can just turn off. HOWEVER... the actual pipe network (not the structures, parts, labels etc... the network itself) ends up on layer 0. For this specific project, I do the old (ssget "x" '((8 . "0")) search to select all objects on layer 0, add those objects to a selection set (pselect), then in my modify objects dialog I filter for pipe networks, then change the layer to something other then 0.
While this is a workaround that works for me, what I really want to know is if there is a way that I can change the default layer that the network (again, not pipes, structures or text, the actual network) so I don't have to use the workaround. Any thoughts?
P.S. It's killing me that I had to create a new Autodesk login and now all my AutoCAD "street cred" is lost

I have three PC's that have a problem saving files to a Gigabit NAS. All three started having this problem this morning. It has been working like a champ for 3 months. Open a picture in PS and try saving the pic to another format on the network drive.
PC 1 I get " Could not save as pathfilename because of a a program error. PC2 I get " Could not save as pathfilename because of a a disk error. PC 3 I get " Could not save as pathfilename because the file could not be found. Now I created a new Volume on the NAS and I can now save to that new Volume.
I can read from existing files on the NAS and save in every other CS3 app. Funky. I can save the PS file locally and on other PC shared network folders. I did the 3 finger salute for prefs and did the font CMAP Base thing that was suggested. I changed the memory allocation. Removed mapping and remapped. Virus and spyware free Any ideas?

We recently installed the CS3 suite onto our school workstations. The problem we are having is that students are getting slowdowns in Photoshop in terms of waiting for menu drop downs and general unresponsive behavior. The applications are installed locally on the computers but the application data folders for the students are redirected to the main file server. As more students use Photoshop (>16) the slowdowns become more noticeable. Sniffing the network packets we are seeing a large amount of small files being opened and closed back to the application data folder on the server. I guess my question is, is there any way to force photoshop to use a local application data folder for all users? The network & file server they are writing to is quick but I suspect not quick enough for all of these small files.

I'm having technical difficulty when Saving As in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign CS2. I can save to my computer but when I attempt to SAVE AS to my server it will take about 5 minutes and give me an I/O error or corrupt the file or the entire program will shut down. Often I will have to restart the entire computer. I've checked the network lines and they are fine. It only does it to my computer and none of the other 4 in my office.

Opening a 640x480 8 bit .psd file stored on a local machine is taking 30 seconds or more...unless I unplug the network cable. Then it opens instantaneously. It can be any file; I've tested more than one.
While I'm waiting for the file to be opened, I can see short bursts of outbound network activity.

Our home network is a Vista PC with an Epson 2880 printer attached to the Vista PC. My wife's XP PC connects through our simple network and prints on the Epson printed by going through my computer. Simple set up, no problems. We both use CS4, set so CS4 manages color, correct Epson paper profile, printer color management off, all the correct settings. Both our monitors are color corrected with Spyder3.When she prints from her computer every picture has a magenta cast. Even more strange is when I copy the same picture onto my PC and open it in my copy of CS4 the picture looks normal but CS4 will not print it. CS4 says I do not have a printer attached. I can open any other picture in the same CS4 session and print with no problems. Every time I try to print a picture that she printed CS4 says there is no printer. This occurs even when I have copied the picture onto my computer and opened it on my computer. I have tried renaming the picture and even changing the format to TIFF or JPEG but CS4 still refuses to print it.I can open a new blank document and use the move tool to move the picture onto the blank document, At this point I can print from CS4 normally AND the picture will not have any color cast?

I am using Photoshop Elements 11 on Mac OSX Mountain Lion and want to store my catalog on a local network drive (FreeNAS). I have encountered many problems while attempting to do this. Then I noticed in the Elements Organizer help, under the section "Repair a catalog", the following: "Note: (Mac OS) You cannot access catalogs present on a network drive."

I use a Windows 7 64 bit Dell at home and at work. Both have Photoshop CS6 (not extended). This week when I saved files at home using file compatiblity (since co-workers in my office are on CS 5.1) and FTPed them from home to the work network I ran into all sorts of issues.
5.1 users reported getting all sorts of errors including...The document contains unknown data which will be discarded to keep layers editable... and another one about missing "color books"
I read about cross version problems with shapes with the new CS6 vector strokes applied. Sure enough, when I sent CS 5.1 co-workers small test files by email they could open all of them but the one with the shape with CS6 vector stroke. So I went back to the larger PSDs and removed the strokes from any shapes, but the office still could not open the files.
I too, even though on the same CS6 product get an error "There was a problem reading the layer data. Read the composite data instead?" If I click to do so I get another error "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop" which is simply not true wince both are CS6

It has been reported and reproduced by Support, an issue whereby Photoshop .PSD files disappear when they’re saved to a network file share. Upon initial investigations Support have observed the following behaviour when saving a Photoshop file.
The document is initially saved as a new file on the file share. The original .PSD file is deleted on the file share. The newly created file is renamed to the same name as the original file.
An issue often arises when steps 1 and 2 complete however step 3 fails. When a file is reported by users as having disappeared, the new file created in step 1 can be renamed from .00_ to the original *.PSD file name on the server as the *.00_ files are normally hidden by the desktop operating system. This allows people to see and open the file from both PC’s and MAC’s using AFP and SMB protocols.
A related issue often reported by users is that they receive an error message “Could not save as” when trying to save a .PSD file. Troubleshooting the issue confirms that the user is able to save the file if they perform a “Save As” operation in Photoshop.
From the reported problems and observations there is clearly an issue with how Photoshop performs a file save operation further exacerbated by the fact the process doesn’t fail safely.

I'm on a mac and I'm trying to run the photoshop script "Layer Comps to Files" - which works fine .... UNLESS I'm connected to an SMB network drive with "users" in the path.
NOTE: I am not trying to save to the network drive!
NOTE: Each test I'm doing is exactly the same (other than which network drive is connected)
NOTE: Just having the network drive connected with "Users" in the path messes things up!
eg.
Script does NOT run if I have an SMB drive connected with "Users" in the path, e.g.: [URL]...As soon as I disconnect the SMB drive (I don't even have to close photoshop) the script runs perfectly fine. The script also runs FINE with other SMB network drives withOUT "users" in the path, e.g.:[URL]...
I found this thread from 2010 (which has never been resolved but is inconveniently read-only now) has the same issue with CS4 and it still isn't fixed in CS6:[URL]...

I was trying to import my photos into the Organizer (PSE10) and noticed that it didn't accept a network drive as a watched folder.
My family stores all photos on a shares NAS drive and I would like to use it with PSE10.
Currently, I can only use PSE10 with the photos I import on my local machine, but I cant organize the rest of the pictures.
Is there a way to trick PSE to add a network drive to the organizer ?

I have a catalog of 13k+ photos that I'm trying to clean up. I'm using Elements 7, I have purchased Elements 11, and am planning to install it soon. Part of my photos are physically located on my hard drive, and part are on a network drive mapped as J:. Elements finds these photos on J: but I don't think that the Elements Catalog is aware that J: is a network drive/removable drive. It looks for them every time I open Elements, making the program very slow to start up.
Should I use the "move to removable drive" to move these photos? How will Elements treat these photos that have been sent to a removable disk? Will I still be able to see thumbnails of the photos and search through my tags for them? If I copy my photos to a new drive, but still call that drive J: will Elements be able to find them? And finally, if I perform this "move to removable disk" task, should I do it now with Elements 7 or update to Elements 11 first?

I have recently re-installed Photoshop CS3 in my new Windows 7 (64-bit) computer and fell foul of the Bonjour Service problem that trashed my Internet connection by installing an "unknown network". I have remedied this by disablng the Bonjour Service in Windows Services Manager.
As I plan to upgrade to PS CS6 on this computer:
1. Does CS6 use Bonjour?
2. If it does, and I have to disable it for the reasons above, will I be able to register and activate CS6 online, and will I be able to get updates?

experienced a lot of flickering while using the Fast SSS shader in Mental ray while rendering over the network using back burner? I have two shots here that both have flickering problems, when I send them to multiple machines over the network, If I send them to one machine it seems to be fine.
On the flickering frames it looks like the SSS has been turned off. It made me think its missing a light map or something but I dont know of a way to save the lightmap to a folder on the network.

My render servers slow down after ca. 20min (I don't know the time range, yet.)
They render in mental ray a frame in ca. 2-3Min... after 20min it slows gradually down to a exorbitant render time... The scene complexity do not change very much!
Maybe it depend on the fact that i render on windows 8 "release preview". With the older "Consumer Preview" i have no trouble.
