Photoshop Elements :: Moving Part Of Catalog To Network Drive

May 8, 2013

I have a catalog of 13k+ photos that I'm trying to clean up. I'm using Elements 7, I have purchased Elements 11, and am planning to install it soon. Part of my photos are physically located on my hard drive, and part are on a network drive mapped as J:.  Elements finds these photos on J: but I don't think that the Elements Catalog is aware that J: is a network drive/removable drive. It looks for them every time I open Elements, making the program very slow to start up.

Should I use the "move to removable drive" to move these photos? How will Elements treat these photos that have been sent to a removable disk? Will I still be able to see thumbnails of the photos and search through my tags for them? If I copy my photos to a new drive, but still call that drive J: will Elements be able to find them? And finally, if I perform this "move to removable disk" task, should I do it now with Elements 7 or update to Elements 11 first?

Photoshop Elements :: Moving Catalog To New Hard Drive

I backed up my Picture folder and backed up my catalog with 29,000 pics (took 5 hours) on an external HD.  I reformatted my drive.  I just reinstalled PS elements 9.0.when I  restore my catalog and select original,  my pictures will be put back in the my picture folder with all the same folders in tact.It is the same OS,  win 7. Or, do i move my pictures back in and then restore the catalog? If i feel maybe my catalog was missing some of my pictures, can I install my pics to the same folder and if the same pics are there, it will say, file already exists..

Lightroom :: Catalog Back-up On Network Drive?

Sep 27, 2011

I am working on a group of about 20,000 pictures. It is the stored photos of multiple users on a network drive.  My job is to organize the pictures in LR. When I am done, several users will be sharing the catalog.  The workflow the group wants to use involves downloading the catalog from a shared site on the network to their desktop. The users would then upload the latest catalog back to the network when they are finished.  They are used to the communication this involves and share other work this way.

I am working from my home computer. (The VPN was too slow) I have the pictures at home on a portable external drive. The catalog is on my internal drive.  When I have a section done, I export it as a catalog onto the external drive. I import it to the latest version of the master catalog on a desktop at work.  The work computer security does not allow me to directly work from my portable external drive so I have to copy and past the import catalog on to the desktop before I import it. When I import it to the master catalog, I move the pictures to the network drive.

My main question is can the users back-up the catalog on the network drive? As part of their workflow, they would automatically back-up the catalog to the network. The next users would then download the back-up to their desktop to use.  Once a week, we would clear old back-ups.

Also, are we losing information from the catalog when we copy it back and forth?

I am losing print presets (and import presets) as I test this. When I test the process on two computers at home, this does not happen.  I wonder if it is the work computer security?  Part of my workflow is to create a pdf contact sheet to send to the user. I use the form pdf wizard to make it interactive so the user can fill in whether to discard the picture and identify people/add text. I e-mail them the contact sheet. They e-mail it back completed.  The preset can be recreated but it is tempermental.  I want something I can leave for the users.

Lightroom :: Moving A Catalog To A Faster Drive?

Jul 11, 2012

I currently have my main catalog 'gwcat-2-2.lrcat'  in what I think is the default directory of ":..D:UsersGeorgePicturesLightroom".  I would like to move it to a faster drive.  Should I move JUST the lrcat file, or is moving the gwcat-2-2 Previews.lrdata required?

There is a LOT of stuff in lrdata! and would take a long time to move.  I've always been a bit confused by the difference between "Previews.lrdatafa" and the cache directory (I already have the cache directory on SSD).  --If you go by just the definition of terms, it seems like a distinction without a difference.

Lightroom :: Moving Entire Catalog To Bigger External Drive?

Jun 29, 2013

A friend just had major problems moving his v3 files. He had one top folder for all Lightroom. He keeps his catalog and photos on an external and now needs to increase the capacity of the external. So he copied them over in Windows with the entire Lightroom folder remaining intact, and reassigned the old drive letter to the new external hard drive, so the path to all photos is preserved.

However, everyhting shows up Missing. "Find this folder" doesn't work. You navigate to the new location but it's not clear what exactly you "do" to relink. Clicking the name of the lost folder in the resulting dialog box (new-but-named-the-same-as-old-drive) didn't cange anthong back at the Library display of that folder. I know I -- myself -- will be moving to a new internal drive from the one currently storing my photos in the near future. So his problem is relavant to the hassle i can expect.

Then went to new machine and restored. All my pictures transferred and file structure was as expected. But only some, seemingly random, tags came through. Also many edited pics are now showing as two or more separate files and not as versions. None of my albums were restored.

Photoshop Elements :: Unable To Convert Most Recent Catalog On Each Drive?

Dec 8, 2013

My PC has three drives

C for the programs, D for the photos and F for the backup photos

With the upgrade to Elements 12, C is nearly maxed out

Except for "C" there are multiple catalogs on each drive, C should have none

I do not see an ability to convert the most recent catalog on each drive?

When a catalog is converted - does it reside on the same drive as the catalog?

If a catalog ends up on the wrong drive, for example C - can I just move/drag it to another drive?

Your catalogs end up under something called "breeze data" and are very diffcult to find, why are they called this?

This conversion appears to have placed the converted photographs in 'C", is that possible, since they were not there at the start?

When I tried a conversion earlier this evening, it only did the most recent photographs I had accessed, how do I ensure it gets them all?

Since it did a partial conversion, will the rest of the conversion land in the same catalogue or in a completely new one?

When a file is converted, and I return to the drive, how will the icon be changed so that I know it has been converted?

For the previous elements 10, can I just drag it from Drive C to D (that way I can still use it with the pictures I have not converted), and have it still operate or must it reside in a program files folder?

As I type this I wonder if I might not be better off with just leaving the photographs as they are on 10 and starting afresh on elements 12

Photoshop Elements :: Transfer Catalog WITHOUT Moving Files

Nov 19, 2012

I am using Google Drive to store my photos so they are automatically backed up and sync'd across multiple computers, as well as my phone.

I am buying a new primary computer and will need to transfer the catalog to the new computer.  However, as I will be installing Google Drive on that computer as well, the photos will all sync down automatically.  There is no need to have PE10 copy my flies from the old computer as part of the transfer process, as described here: [URL] ....

The way I see it, there are two scenarios:

I HAVE to use PE10 to make a back up of all the files in the catalog onto an external drive.  I import the library on the new computer and either A) Google Drive recognizes that the files are all the same and doesn't waste time syncing the files or B) Google Drive replaces the 110 GB of files currently on the servers with the same files, then pushes those files down to all the devices that are synced.

or...

I can use Google Drive to push the photos onto my new computer, then the paths, tags, albums and other catalog information can be imported without PE10 worrying about the photo files themselves.

Lightroom :: Cache Large RAW Files Imported From Network Drive On Local Drive?

Jul 5, 2012

I'm copying RAW files from a shoot onto my network RAID drive in a per-album folder, from where I then import into a new LR catalog (I'm using LR 4.1) on my Windows laptop for that album.

I'm finding that editing RAW files on a network drive from a wireless laptop is awfully slow (not to mention not being able to continue the work offline somewhere else), so I'd like to cache those files on my speedy SSD drive just until I'm done editing and exporting/publishing that album.

I back up my per-album catalog onto the network folder alongside the RAW files since that's my IT-managed master repository. When I'm done editing, I'd purge the cached files and just keep the catalog previews on my limited capacity SSD.

So, is there a way to tell LR to, for one/all files imported from a location (in my case a network folder), look in an alternate location for the identical files? Since I create per-album catalogs in per-album folders, there wouldn't be filename clashing. Either LR can provide this caching behavior on its own or I'd manually copy files from the network folder to a local folder and tell LR to look there first.

I don't really want to make copies of files into secondary folders within LR since then it's a hassle to merge edits on the cached copy to its master copy (I haven't done this, but I'd imagine so).

Lightroom :: Developer To Import A Clients Catalog From Photoshop Elements On An External Hard Drive

Lightroom :: Merge External Drive Images To Desktop Drive Within Same Master Catalog?

Aug 18, 2013

I have about 900 raw files on an external drive. I edited those files using my master catalog using a laptop while still travelling. When I got home, I copied the master catalog from the external drive to the desk top, then opened the master catalog on my desktop. I can see the edited images on the external drive. So far so good.

I want to copy (add) the edited images to my desk top. I tried to export the images as a new catalog and then import it into the desire location on my desktop drive. However, LR5 does not allow that. I get this message: "There is nothing new in the catalog you have selected. All of the catalog's photos are up to date in this catalog." Yes, but the edited  images are not on my desktop.....

I also tried to Import from the external drive and then Copy the files to the desktop, but then I lose all of the work done in the develop module and the keywords.

I watched Kost's LR 3 video on merging catalogs, but she dodges the question of how to deal with this issue since the "merge" is within the same catalog.I'm using LR5 with Windows 7.
