When i am using layer masks in elements 9 I can conceal paint with a black brush, but when I want to go back over something to reveal (white brush) nothing happens. I have the layer mask selected as active and it works perfectly fine in reverse (black).

I can use the masks that are hidden (shown with black screen) and apply them with the white brush, but I cant get white or shown masks to be taken off with the black brush. Sometimes, not always I have trouble adjusting the opacity of white masks. I was playing around with actions I downloaded and after applying three actions to a photo, elements froze on me. I read about trashing preferences, I dont know what that does or means but I tried to hit cntrol alt shift when photoshop was opening and nothing happened. When it first opens it shows I can install the new inspiration browser ( i dont know what that is either) thinking it was a required update I tried to update and it gave me an error message, something about the installer has been mis-configured.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've downloaded and briefly messed around with Paint.Net, and while you can work with layers, I haven't found a way to use layer masks. I used to exclusively use GIMP, but then I found out about Adobe Lightroom, so I bought that and have been extremely happy with it. However, I can't do any pixel editing to get rid of any phone lines, or people's heads, or any other item that is goofing up my photo. I didn't want to go back to GIMP (it's not the easiest program to use), but then I found out about Paint.Net and that it uses layers.
I assumed that it would also have the option to use layer masks, as a natural extension or feature of having layers. But again I can't figure out, or have found online, a way to create layer masks.
Can normally use brushes to remove or add back part of a mask, not letting me do this at the moment, why? Also trying to use detailed smart brush but it is not letting me use on selected areas it is adding effect to whole image
View 1 Replies View RelatedIn Elements 9 I want to select and copy a layer which is partly empty. This is to make a layer mask. The non-empty part is too complicated to select using any of the Select tools. If I use Select All, then copy and paste to a new layer, the pasted image is not in the right place - it has been displaced significantly. I am then not able to use it to create a layer mask, because it will not be properly placed above the original image. Why does this displacement happen ? Is there something I can do to avoid it ?
View 7 Replies View RelatedOne thing I have never understood is: why use layer masks and adjustment layers, instead of simply creating a copy of the subject layer (the one I want to make changes to) and experimenting with that? It's quick (Ctrl-J), I can do it as many times as I want, I'm not affecting my Background layer. If I like the changes, I can keep them. I can switch the copy on and off to compare with the Background layer. I can do any type of blend or combination I desire. I can insert Gradient layer(s), select any part of the copy and (Ctrl-J) create a new layer containing only the selected part. I can adjust size, rotate, do anything.
It almost seems that "layer mask" and "adjustment layer" are mainly another layer of terminology; how they are intrinsically different from or superior to working with copies of the Background layer?
I have a psd file with several layers that includes a mask (filled in red) which is what I want to use as the shape of the image. Every tutorial has a different way of creating a mask but I can't figure out how to do it when the mask is a layer within an existing file. There's no option to save the mask to disk so I can load it into a new raster image to merge it with the image.

I thought I would be able to use them to paint my layer masks, but I cant figure out a way of using the selection to limit where I am painting inside the mask. I thought convert to a freeze but it seems paint layers ignore frozen areas. Is it possible, or is it a case of saving selections for sculpt and not for paitning?

My goal is to use the PS image as part of a Web page, allowing the Web page background to show through the rectangle which surrounds the text. Hope this explanation makes sense.
I have an image silohetted on a transparent background. In order to put a drop shadow on it that only affects the bottom half of the image, I duplicated the layer, added a drop shadow layer style and a layer mask>reveal to fade the effect of the drop shadow. This worked but the layer masked added black or darker coloring to the over all image - then I reduced the fill on that particular layer to 0% and still got the discoloration. Why is the overall image getting darker with the addition of the lay mask on the layer style?

When I create a duplicate b&w layer and try to erase over a color that is not bright (in the more neutral family, like blue eyes or faded blue colors), the bottom color layer is not showing true to its color and is instead showing as a yucky orange peach. This does not happen with brighter colors of any type - erasing to reveal them will reveal the true color.
This does not happen with my older documents that came out of my camera as jpgs. Also, no amount of changing modes, color spaces or anything like that seems to help.
Is there some sort of restriction in Paint.NET that restricts the folks creating plugins from permitting the plugins to interact or function directly on the canvas/layer?
For instance the smudge and liquify (and others) open another window where you make your adjustments. The reason why I ask is this results in doing some things blindly because you can't see the rest of the canvas. I think some of these plugins will be so much more effective (especially with the recent addition of grid warping) if you can do some of these things on the canvas so you can shape images/textures to follow contours, but this is nearly impossible without doing so with several blind attempts.
I'm working with Layers, and wondering if it's possible to use a brush to reveal the layer beneath. If so, how would I do it? I'm thinking of an effect a bit like when you have a window that's all steamed up, and you run your finger across it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI work with .dds texture files a lot in modding the games Oblivion and Skyrim, and whenever someone else releases a mod that I like, I usually change it to my preferences (solely for personal use, of course). This occasionally means editing their textures, but some people have a way of making the texture "invisible" (as in totally transparent), yet still readable by the game as well as some plugins like Emboss. This makes it impossible for me to do anything with the file, and as a result some become completely unusable. what this "invisibility" is caused by, and a way to reverse it?

At one point I want two words to be displayed with simple text movement and once those two words are in place I would like an image to rise from behind them to be on top of them(not in 3d sapce but standard 2D). Since text is transparent you can see the image behind the text before the image is set to move.
I tried creating a mask around the image which does mask it out but when I move the image up the mask moves with the image, thus keeping the image masked. I thought maybe a null object with a mask would be needed but I cannot get to see to get it work. I feel this should be easy but I just do not have the skills to put the pieces together....
If I paste an image which is larger than the canvas size, a part of the pasted image will be outside the canvas. How can I resize the canvas so it will reveal only the image outside the canvas but no extra white space is shown.
By using the built in "Resize canvas" function, there is a lot of trial and error involved.
I have somehow reversed the process of changing a sky in my photo so that when I get to the point of painting in the sky from the 2nd photo, it is painting with white (not black) that brings out the background I want on the original photo. Where have I gone wrong? Is there anywhere I can go to find a detailed step-by-step process for doing Layer Masks?

I have a layer with sculpting on it an I need to separate it out into two different layers. I painted a mask for the parts that I want to mask out and then duplicated the layer. Now I want to invert the mask to reveal the masked out sculpting on the second layer but I don't see the "invert mask" function that I thought for sure was there. I see invert freeze but not invert mask.
I just installed PS CS6 and when I apply a layer mask to a layer I can paint black to hide the layer, but when painting white to restore the layer there is no effect. White paint will not restore the layer or modify the mask at all. The black paint works as usual to hide the layer, but how do I restore an area in a layer mask if not painting white?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using a clipping mask on a layer. The base layer that the clipping mask is referencing has a layer effect applied (in this case an inner shadow). I want to make it so the layer effect is only applied to the base layer and NOT the clipped layers.
Below is an example of what I'm talking about. as you can see, layer 1 has the base layer's inner shadow applied to it. I want the inner shadow to be hidden by Layer 1, but the clipping mask to still apply.
A student of mine asked why you would create multiple layer masks on a single layer.

But then it was not allowing me to directly edit the layers. I cannot draw, paint, erase, smooth, etc. I can draw shapes and select and delete material, but have no independent control with the tools.
It appears that the Layer Filters functionality is broken again with 2013. Unchecking the "Apply layer filter to layer toolbar" disables the function of layer filters in the tool palette.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to change the palette of an indexed image without losing the color table indexes. I want to change a bunch of colors at once.
Image->Adjustments->Replace Color (while still indexed) is exactly what I want. And it works, mostly.
The problem is I am trying to select a mask of multiple colors with 0 "fuzziness" so I can adjust their hue/saturation etc.
But, when I go to hold SHIFT to select multiple colors, I get all these other colors that I didn't want included in my mask, despite that fuzziness is set to 0. I tried selecting all colours and subtracting colours and this also fails.
For example, I select ALL colours in the mask by holding shift and picking every colour in the image (there are 24 colours). Then after ALT->clicking 2 colours, it actually deselects ALL 24 colours. I want it to only deselect the exact 2 that I picked.
Magic wand works in this way with 0 tolerance. Why doesn't the mask picker?
I can't convert to RGB->back to indexed because then the color table not match up.
My goal is to batch plots using VB in Visual Studio 2008, Autocad Map 3D 2010, Win 7 Pro 64. It all works but now I want to apply layerstates.

My questions:
1. If you use Option Strict, how do you convert from integer to "layerstatesmasks.color"? VS shows the error "Option Strict On disallows implicit conversions from 'Integer' to 'Autodesk.AutoCAD.DatabaseServices.LayerStateMasks'." I can't figure out the conversion. Are the values documented somewhere? "clientmask" is not in the object browser or the dev. guide.
2. If you aren't sure what is masked, do you turn on all of the options on (on, color, linetype, lineweight, etc.)? Is there a sum of values that means "layerstatemasks.all"?
3. LAS files are DXF format. Do I have to read the LAS to detemine what the user wants?
4. The second argument to .restorelayerstate is the viewport id. The examples use objectid.null. I could have several layouts to plot, and maybe several viewports. Is the process a) Make the layout current, b) activate each viewport, c) set model space current, and d) restore the layerstate?
I've come across an issue using X6 I haven't seen before. After working on a multi-layer pspimage file, saving it and reloading I can no longer edit one of the raster layers. When the layer is selected with the pick tool it shows the circle with line when mousing over. It was not merged or locked so not sure what's causing this and never came across this with any of the previous PSP versions I've used.
PSP X6 16.1.0.48
UPDATE: Tried making sure it was the top layer and still could not edit the layer. I then made all the other layers invisible and at that point it would allow editing the image. Is there some hidden feature in X6 I'm missing or is this a quirk?
