Mudbox :: How To Invert Mask To Reveal Masked Out Sculpting On Second Layer
Mar 28, 2011
Am I missing something very basic?? I am trying to invert a mask on a sculpt layer. I don't seem to be able to invert a mask on a sculpt layer.
I have a layer with sculpting on it an I need to separate it out into two different layers. I painted a mask for the parts that I want to mask out and then duplicated the layer. Now I want to invert the mask to reveal the masked out sculpting on the second layer but I don't see the "invert mask" function that I thought for sure was there. I see invert freeze but not invert mask.

I need to cut into a mask to reveal a layer. I have a alpha image with thousands of lights scattered around the image. I'm laying the lights layer over an image of a city to create more lights in various buildings. All I need to do is create some form of mask that when I cut into it reveals the lights below which is over the city.

I have an image silohetted on a transparent background. In order to put a drop shadow on it that only affects the bottom half of the image, I duplicated the layer, added a drop shadow layer style and a layer mask>reveal to fade the effect of the drop shadow. This worked but the layer masked added black or darker coloring to the over all image - then I reduced the fill on that particular layer to 0% and still got the discoloration. Why is the overall image getting darker with the addition of the lay mask on the layer style?

I'm doing some photo editing of a HDR combined photoshop file. I have a layer mask of my buildings. I copied the layer, now i'd like to invert the mask so that I can immediately start fiddling with the sky.
How do I invert the layer mask? I'm in 32-bit mode right now. CS3

I'm scultping a mesh of 1.8 million and everything is fine and smooth. After 3 or 4 minutes the program starts lagging badly to the point it is not usable. If I leave it idle for 10-15 minutes and resume it's fine again, for another 3 minutes. If I close the program and re-open it (as soon as it starts lagging) the lag persists. If I reboot it's fine (for 3 minutes of course).
I've tried changing the graphic's card driver (currently latest nvidia), changing the features in the nvidia control panel to min, and also the ones in mudbox. To be honest I don't think it's the graphic's card fault.
I thought it had something to do with the memory (leakage maybe?), so I did some tests but the working set size is stable at 300K and the virtual memory slowly goes up to 390K where it stops (this during the 3 minutes of sculpting).
I realize with mb 2012 there will be little interest in solving the old version's problems but I reckoned I'd give it a last shot. It's also a student edition so I can't upgrade. Here's my settings

How can I cut out a shape from my PS image to expose the background layer? I will "Save for Web" with a transparent background. The shape will be a rectangle, and a text layer will later be added to display within the rectangle.
Â
My goal is to use the PS image as part of a Web page, allowing the Web page background to show through the rectangle which surrounds the text. Hope this explanation makes sense.

Maybe it's because I have a mind-dulling headache today, but I'm just not seeing the way to either create an inverted vector mask or invert an existing one.
Â
For example, in the following layer stack, I'd like the vector mask on the group to create a transparent hole in the image, rather than make the outer part of the image transparent. Note that the [Invert] button in the Properties panel is unavailable (grayed-out).
Â
If I could have created the vector mask in the first place using the rectangle tool, but inverted, that would have been okay as well, but somehow the sequence to do that escaped me as well. I know how to do this with a selection, but I'd rather keep it in vector land.

I'm working with Layers, and wondering if it's possible to use a brush to reveal the layer beneath. If so, how would I do it? I'm thinking of an effect a bit like when you have a window that's all steamed up, and you run your finger across it.

Using CS2 and images that were shot in RAW and have been converted to jpgs or psds.
When I create a duplicate b&w layer and try to erase over a color that is not bright (in the more neutral family, like blue eyes or faded blue colors), the bottom color layer is not showing true to its color and is instead showing as a yucky orange peach. This does not happen with brighter colors of any type - erasing to reveal them will reveal the true color.
This does not happen with my older documents that came out of my camera as jpgs. Also, no amount of changing modes, color spaces or anything like that seems to help.

I am doing a kinetic typography project for for set to a certain song.Â
Â
At one point I want two words to be displayed with simple text movement and once those two words are in place I would like an image to rise from behind them to be on top of them(not in 3d sapce but standard 2D). Since text is transparent you can see the image behind the text before the image is set to move.
Â
I tried creating a mask around the image which does mask it out but when I move the image up the mask moves with the image, thus keeping the image masked. I thought maybe a null object with a mask would be needed but I cannot get to see to get it work. I feel this should be easy but I just do not have the skills to put the pieces together....

Sometimes when I mask an image - or actually - mask a group of several complex images, when I release the mask it is impossible to ungroup the images. Is there a way to make masked groups but then not have that happen?

I'm wondering how Photo Shop modifies a file that's had a layer mask applied to it, because I'm having a peculiar problem with layer masked images. I ran the following test because I needed to mask an image my sister sent me, & the image was getting messed up when it was scaled on her website:
Â
I created 2 PNGs.
Â
(1) With one, I created at a black & white image & then replace the white with transparency by applying a layer mask.
(2) For the other, I started with a transparent background & added black. No layer mask.
Â
When I open the image which had a layer mask applied (1) in one of the other programs on my computer, the mask is inverted! All the white from the original image shows, & the black is now transparent. That makes me think the layer mask is stored somehow in the PNG file. And it has a different problem when her website scales it - it turns solid gray.
Â
I don't have any problems whatsoever with the image that wasn't created with a mask (2).
Â
Unfortunately, with the image my sister sent me, I don't have the option to start over with a transparent BG, & don't want to cut out the background because I'm trying not to lose the partially transparent pixels, or leave pixels that have the original background partially showing through.
Â
What can I do so that the PNG file created by applying a mask stores what I see, and doesn't need to store the layer mask? I'm using Adobe CS5, version 12.02, on Mac OS X 10.6.

When i am using layer masks in elements 9 I can conceal paint with a black brush, but when I want to go back over something to reveal (white brush) nothing happens. I have the layer mask selected as active and it works perfectly fine in reverse (black).

When I have a masked layer and try to drag-select other items on other layers outside of it, it still gets selected if the image area happens to be located within the selection range. Or in other words: why would anything outside of the masked area get selected at all, when the point of a mask in not just to hide what's outside, but also to 'deactivate' it,so that the masked area is all we are working with. This didn't happen before, may be those were older versions of photoshop.

Photo of boat in ocean. I want JUST the ocean as a layer-in the layers palette I would see the original image with a 'hole' in it-the boat would be missing. But when I use a lasso tool and copy to a new layer,
I a get new layer with the exact opposite- the original image with just the boat-the ocean is missing. Is there a simple way to invert this so I get the ocean as a layer? If not, how is the lasso tool used to get the background and not the subject of the photo?

Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?
Â
And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?
Â
I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.
Â
So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.
Â
I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)
Â
However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??
Â
So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.
Â
I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.
Â
I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it because I am not getting behind the Mask?

My subject line pretty much sums up what I want to ask.
The thing is I've learned how to do both of them, but every textbook exercise I've done regarding one I found out that I can pull off with the other too.
Are they simply two different mechanisms for doing the same thing?

It try bring an image into paint layer. I found that there is this function:
PaintLayerImporter() and it takes 4 parameters. They are:
1) const QString &sFileName, ///< Name of the file to import
2) int iFileTypeIndex, < Index of the type of the file in the array returned by SupportedExtensions
3) Mesh *pMesh, ///< Mesh which contains the paint layer
4) TexturePool *pTarget ///< Destination of the import operation
But I'm not able to get this function to work. Any small example how to use it.
I think that main problem for me is that I don't know exactly what 2) parameter means(int iFileTypeIndex). It says that you get that from SupportedExtensions but When I look at it:
virtual QVector<FileExtension> SupportedExtensions( void );
It surely dosen't look int.

I set up some selection sets thinking they would come in handy later on when I am painting. I thought I would be able to use them to paint my layer masks, but I cant figure out a way of using the selection to limit where I am painting inside the mask. I thought convert to a freeze but it seems paint layers ignore frozen areas. Is it possible, or is it a case of saving selections for sculpt and not for paitning?

I'm having a problem trying to export a ptex paint layer to be used in another application.
For some reason when I export it, everything seems to work just fine, until get gets to calculating tangents and then it hangs forever on 99%... Every way I try saving the file, it does this. I can easily paint on my mesh, and save the project file, but I can't export the ptex file.
Deleting the mydocuments/mudbox folder which I did.
I'm using mudbox 2012 64bit on Win 7.

I can do one or another, but both at the same time? It is annoying because a mask selection turns into layer selection when you select a second layer/folder.

(CS3) I have a raster layer that has some semi-transparent pixels.
I'd like to make the layer itself fully opaque, and move the contents of its alpha channel into a layer mask.
(If possible, merging the alpha channel with what I have already placed into the layer mask.)

Is there a difference between selecting your layer and clicking Add Layer Mask Icon versus having that layer selected, hold down ctrl and select Add Layer Mask Icon?
Also regarding working in Lightroom, if I modify a jpeg, select another image from filmstrip to work on and then go back to the first image for more work, are those actions degrading image even though I never physically save and close.

I've often been annoyed by the fact that that I need to go into the layer panel each time I need to switch between editing a layer and editing it's mask. Surely there must be a way to do this with a shortcut. I found a way to disable the layer mask in the shortcut menu, but this is not something I need to do that often. Switching between layer and layer mask, however, happens all the time - at least in my workflow.
