I have just downloaded the trial version of PE12 and the Layers drop-down menu is completely grayed out. I have tried clicking on the layers icon at the bottom of the page but cannot access new layers or any layer option. Are layers not available on the trial version?

I can't use clipping mask. I am wondering, is this feature disabled because it's a free trial? Do I need to have my photos arranged differently in order for the layer column to be active and usable? Is this a feature that elements does not have?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI use Adobe Photoshop Elements 11. Until recently, I've had no problem with fill layers. I'd make a selection from the photo, then I'd make a layer of the selection, then I'd go to edit, fill layer, fill with background/foreground color. Then the selection only would be filled. Now, all of a sudden, I make the selection, make a layer of the selection, go to edit/fill layer/fill with background/foreground color, and the whole photo becomes filled with the fill color, and not just the selection. I'm always on the selection layer, not the background or any other layer. I've reset all the tool defaults, and I've even deleted the defaults file, but to no avail.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am still having a difficult time understanding how to use layers to edit photos in photoshop elements 12. All of the tutorials I have viewed about this have one common theme: the best way to edit photos in photoshop is to create multiple "layers" of the original background image so that different types of edits can be made to each layer, and not the original. This way the edits made to each layer can be compared to the original to make sure everything looks the way it should. Once all the edits have been made, then each layer is merged into one final touched up image, correct? Here is what is driving me mad. I have been lead to believe that when I edit a layer of an image, that any edits I make are only supposed to show up in the active layer and not in the original or any of the other layers I create. Is this true? If so, how can I set up my editor so that the edits I am making are only showing up in the layer I am actually working on? It seems to me that if the edits I make are going to show up in every layer, along with the original, then there is no need to use layers at all for editing photos.

The only way I can do that appears to be to use Save for Web - and I do not want to compress the images as web images. Also, in Elements 9 I could open a PSE file in layers and continue to edit - in 12 I cannot do that. I'm really very discouraged and wish I had my Elements 9 back.

In addition to this, the opacity seems to be rather strange, sometimes changing the area above the new paint stroke to a completely new color while other times it is just as if it were at 100% opacity. View 3 Replies View Relatedhow to import new images into the layers panel. If I hit "create new layer" all I get is a blank layer. What I want to do is import an image from which I will cut out part of it and layer it onto another image. For example: lets's say I want to put an image of myself in front of a tree. I want to take the image of myself from one picture and layer it onto the picture which has the tree on it. How do I get both of those images into the same layers panel? I can get the picture of myself into the layers panel as layer #1, then I can cut myself out of the picture. My problem is, when I try to import the picture with the tree on it, it opens itself up in a new tab. If I try to hit "create new layer", only a blank layer apprears above my first layer. I have tried to drag the new image onto the layers panel, but it won't attach. All of the tutorials I have been able to find/watch, already have all of the images they are working with pre-loaded into the layers panel. I just need to know how to get my images into the panel, so that I can start to work with them.

I've noticed that once I'm deep into a many layered project that I can't click on a specific layer in the work area but need to click on the layer I want to work on in the layers palette. Is this something new in PSE12 or do I need to change something in Preferences?

I'm trying to use one image as a background for another image. I can make a layer on one image, and a layer on the other. But I can't see how you maerge the two?In Pshop you simply select it all then copy and paste and you have 2 images in seperate layers, but Elements doens't work like that.

Today I opened a PSE file to carry on working on it, and the layers panel was blank, even though it has several layers. I opened a jpg and tried to create a new layer, and nothing shows up in the layers panel. I don't remember changing anything between last night and today. Is PSE corrupt?
