Photoshop :: Create Blank File / Metadata Handling

Mar 26, 2012

We have two related issues we're trying to solution.

(1) If we create a blank Photoshop file ("template") that is merely a size, resolution and color profile, when we add an image (that does contain metadata), the image's metadata is not retained in the template metadata. We need to be able to transfer that image's metadata, automatically, to the template. (We do not want to have to copy/paste.)

(2) Let's say we now have a template with 1 image and associated metadata. We now need to add another image(s) to this template and have the second image's metadata also transfer automatically. (This auto-transfer of metadata would occur for any subsequent image added.)We are using CS4 v11.0.2.

Photoshop :: File Handling

Sep 7, 2005

Running OSX and CS2. Having trouble with file handling. I can take several hundred photographs a day in my job. Sometimes each image can require fine tuning.

This used to be fairly simple, in that when I activate an icon the image appeared. I would complete the adjustments and move onto the next image in the folder. "This is where the trouble begins". With the new system and CS2 everytime I go back to the holding folder, the previous selection has been ignored and the first file in the folder is the highlighted choice, despite the fact I might be on image 90. The program automatically defaults back to image one.

This is very frustrating in that I now have to keep a written track of the file number just completed so that I can scroll down to the next required file.

This cannot be the way that CS2 handles multiple files.

Photoshop :: File Handling And Default Folders In CS3

Aug 8, 2008

Is it possible set a Default Folder for all "Save As" to be saved in?

I find that an edit of a photo will automatically save in the folder that I opened the shot from. If I had made a copy of the shot, the copy will save in a different folder.

Ideally, ANY AND ALL (originals and copies) "Save As" should be save in "c:Working" by default without having to go through the hassle of navigating there.

I am running CS3 under Vista (4 gig ram) on one machine and XP (3 gig ram) on another.

Lightroom :: 4.0 File Handling / Step Backward Or Forward?

Sep 25, 2012

I am not a big fan of the entire way that Lightroom 4.0 hands changes at all and Adobe needs to address this problem because it is just that, an problem. We can use the catchy verbiage "non destructive" because it sounds nice but the fact is that it is cumbersome from a resource perspective and UI perspective.  It adds extra steps to the workflow and this in turn takes away from the experience of users.  The entire workflow should be reexamined and the code, rewritten.

Lets just look at how Picasa handles this issue.  When I click "Save" or better yet "Save All", every picture that I have edited is saved with the changes that I have made to them.  A new folder is then created and named "Originals" where I can find the original files that I have edited. That’s it. Plain and simple.  My files are intact and I can now go and find them in my well-thought-out folder hierarchy where I can then do what ever I want from emailing to a client to sending them to Flicker, Facebook, Google+ Galleries, where ever I choose.  There is no thought put into this process.

Adobe has a lot to learn from this free app. Currently, in Lightroom 4, I have to go back through the 300 pictures I just took, find the 40 that I have edited, then "Ctrl+Click" to select only them, find my folder in my file directory, create a new folder, and finally export a new set of pictures with the changes that I wanted to send out to my client 10 minutes ago.

Both processes achieve the same thing and the things that we all want which are our original files are still intact and untouched and our new files with the changes are in the folder where we found them.  The difference is that Adobe chose a much less elegant way to go about this.  More advanced? Yes, but sometimes, as and coder will tell you, simpler is faster, safer, and better.

Now, I also stated that from a resource perspective this is also poorly conceived.  I am referring to the fact that now I have to maintain a database in which changes are tracked that is always running in the background.  It is common knowledge that databases are susceptible to corruption when not properly managed and even the simplest snag in the application, power surge while an I/O process is running, or if my computer hangs up, all my changes are gone.  What if I want to switch computers?  Do I also need to manually go in several times a month and backup my database to a separate directory?

Will I lose all of my changes that I did not publish?  Maybe, maybe not but it is now something else I have to worry about which ultimately takes away from my experience in the application.

Simpler is better and this is one step backwards, not forwards. At a minimum, give me the option to save the changes and don’t manage your users like a child.

Photoshop :: How To Create Base Template For Metadata Information

Nov 6, 2012

A friend asked me how to create a base template for metadata information (file/info/description). The basic info is my name, address, copywrite, etc.  I had created this on a previous version of Photoshop and was able to migrate it to PS6. However, in trying to answer his question, I have lost my own template. How to recreate this.

Photoshop :: Blank PSD File...

Aug 16, 2007

I received a PSD file from a client that I want to pull an image from. When I open the file there is a background layer and Layer 1, but in the layer window they're both blank. However, on the screen is the image I need.

I try to select the image, or use lasso or wand but it treats the image as a blank image (no matter what layer I'm on). Even when I drag and drop the image to another file, it comes up blank. The only time I do see it is in the original file, but I can't seem to do anything with it.

Photoshop :: Changing Metadata (JPG File In CS5)

Mar 25, 2012

- I open a .jpg file in PS CS5,
- I change one or several metadata, using the XMP embedded panel (File -> Information)
- I apply the changes,
- I close the file.

At this moment, PS ask me if I want to save the changes. Again... A little bit curious, because I already did it, but... I agree. Then, PS ask me now to choice the jpg quality (you know, the scale from 1 to 12). But changing metadata never affect the image itself... So, it should be useless to do that (of course, I made no modification on the picture itself).

I must say that (if I remember well) sometimes I was able to close the file directly.

Lightroom :: How To Create Custom Set Of Metadata Fields

Sep 10, 2013

In the Library module, to the left of the "Metadata" label next to the twisty to open it up, is a drop down list that starts with "Default" and then has a list with sets such as "DNG", "EXIF", etc.

Two questions or requests:

1) I want to be able to see ALLLLLLLL of the metadata.  Right now I got out to ExifTool and suck out the data I need and hand corrolate that.  In last night's particular need, I needed the rotation of the camera body which is in the metadata (twice) but I don't know how to view it from inside Lightroom.

2) I want to be able to add to the list I described with my own sets of metadata fields.  To me, this would be very nice.  There are tons and tons of fields but I'm interested in only a few but I'm sure each person is interested in a different set.  It would be nice to be able to customize which fields are displayed.  Of course, once you go that far, then you may as well add the ability to name the sets and save them for later use.

Is either one of these items possible in Lightroom 4?  (or 5?)

Photoshop :: Lost Metadata In File After Attempt To

Apr 18, 2009

I open RAW pictures from my Canon 5D (but same happens with pictures from Canon 10D) in PS and than try to save them as JPGs, I loose majority of my metadata from the files (after right click on filename in. I can still Windows Explorer and clicking Properties or simply adding additional columns in Win XP Windows Explorer detailed view.So same picture, without any editing at all, just opened as RAW file (which it is a CR2 or CRW file in Canons), and then saved as JPG, suddenly does not show the date of picture taken, focal length or exposure time are all gone. Does not matter if I try Properties in Win Explorer or say Properties in MS Office Picture Manager. Was trying to look for any setting in PS that would set the ability to save or abandon saving of this type of information in JPG file but could not find anything of this kind. What is interesting I went back to my pictures I have saved from RAW to JPG using same PS years ago, and I this was not a problem. Everything was saving OK.So in summary:1. This would not be a problem related to camera (it is unlikely that same problem would occur on two different models at the same time - even though both are Canons)2. It must be a way to force the Photoshop to do that, I f I was able to do it successfully, almost without knowing, before. Therefore, I would think that either:1. There is some set of defaults somewhere in PS that I have accidently turned off causing my PS not to save this metadata properly or in full, or2. That it came as some kind of bug with some of the updates to PS CS3 that I was getting over last year from Adobe.

Photoshop Elements :: Save Metadata To File?

Feb 5, 2013

I am finding that going to File>Save Metadata to File is not really needed.  I changed some metadata like the caption and notes and I don't choose that option in the menu. I then examine the file in Photoshop, and the metadata has already been updated. The metadata gets updated by itself for JPG files, and the XMP file in RAW files gets updated too without me doing anything extra.

What is Save Metadata to File good for then? Am I missing something?

Photoshop :: File Info Just Gives Me A Blank Dialog...

It gives the filename at the top but just plain white blank inside the box. The same thing happens in File Info within Bridge. In the metadata panel in Bridge, I can see the metadata is there, including previous captions. But I cannot access them in File Info and I also cannot activate the caption within the metadata panel to edit the caption text.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Create Blank Dimension Style

I'm using Inventor 2013 and I'm trying to create a new dimension style that shows a box or parenthesis rather than a dimension. The purpose is so the workers in the field can measure a part and fill in the dimension.

So far the best I can do is make a dimension style that is white so that it comes out as a space. The other option was to manually override the dimension, but I don't want to go into every drawing and change every dimension.

What I would truly like is if the dimension would automatically come out looking like this     [          ]
