Photoshop :: 5.1 - Could Not Initialize CS Because File Is Empty
Apr 24, 2012
I tried to start Photoshop 5.1 64bit today, and it shows the blue intro screen with the reading and loading, and then it goes to a popup error message that reads, "Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is empty." I can run the 32bit version fine, but I would prefer to use the 64bit version. I am running Windows 64bit Ultimate. I have been having issues here and there with CS5.5 on this computer. I ran CS4 fine for the last few years, but since after the upgrade, things have been acting weird. About two weeks ago, InDesign refused to work, so I did a reinstall. Then, two days later, I was having other issues, so I did another reinstall. Before that, Illustrator was having issues, so I had to copy programs files from my office computer to my home computer to make it work. I am starting to wonder if my hard drive is going out. Is there an Adobe fix for just Photoshop? I have the CS5.5 installation DVDs here. I tried copying the Photoshop.exe from my office computer to my home computer and replacing it, but it didn't work either.
I just upgraded to Windows 8 64 bit last night. I had been running Cs2 just fine on Windows 7 64 bit for a few years now.In fact I used it last week. Now after the upgrade is complete, I get this error message when I try to launch CS2:
Could not initialize photoshop because the file is locked. use the properties command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.Of course, there is no mention of which file is locked.
I am running Photoshop 7 and everything has been going fine until a few days ago. I am a sys admin and suddenly my users are getting this error when they try to load PS 7.
When I try to open the program, it gives me the following error: "Could not initialize photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted). I've uninstalled and re-installed the program.
I have just installed Elements 11 on a current Mac and when i start it i get this error Error: "could not initialize photoshop because the file is locked..." I have trashed the prefs, reinstalled it , restarted nothing works. If i log in as another user on the Mac it opens with no problem.
Upon starting Photo shop CS, I get the message "Could not initialize Photo shop because the file is locked. Use the 'Properties command in Windows Explorer to unlock the file."
Which file are they referring to "unlock"? And I don't see an option in Windows Explorer that allows you to "unlock" a file.
This problem started after I improperly tried to create a new scratch disk. I can't get back into Photo shop to recreate a proper scratch disk.
Everytime I open my CS6, it always show " Could not initialize Photoshop because the preferences file was invalid (it has been deleted)" I reinstalled it but it is still popping out.
I am having in Photoshop CS2. I have had CS2 for over 2 years and have never had this problem. I am not able to open Photoshop CS2. I am getting a message that reads "Could not initialize Photoshop because a required resources text file is missing. It goes through a series of " could not load default contours, styles, custom shaphes because the file could not be found" before getting to the "initialize" window.
I used photoshop element 9.. I was just finishing my flyer for a client. When I went to click save and was waiting for the save to complete, the photoshop just disappear and when I open it back up PSE9 and went to look for my file, I was working on it say This is not a vaild Portable Document File??? I dont want to start over from scratch Is there any way to recover the file?
I was trying to change the copyright information on a few photos in PS, but every time I open the File Info dialog (ctrl-alt-shift-i) the dialog comes up empty and hangs photoshop. Even if I open PS with a new document and try to open File Info, it still hangs.
Here's my version: Adobe Photoshop Version: 13.0.1 (13.0.1 20120808.r.519 2012/08/08:21:00:00) x64 Operating System: Windows 7 64-bit Version: 6.1 Service Pack 1
PSE 11 catalog but when I try to restore it it says it's empty. I can open the folder/files on my hard drive but the restore function says it is empty.
I have been using Photoshop LE 5 for several years (almost 2 years on this PC).
Now I am getting this error message when I try to open it:
Adobe Photoshop Limited Edition
Could not initialize Photoshop because
(X)the file is locked. Use the 'Properties'
command in the File Manager to unlock
the file.
[OK]
Clicking [OK] shuts down the dialog box and Photoshop window (just solid grey background).
I first noticed the problem the other day when I selected more than one photo.JPG file and right clicked to choose Photoshop. This occurred in my 'user' logon. It also happened any time I tried to open Photoshop.
I logged on as (WinXP (sp2)) 'administrator' and was able to use Photoshop.
I have a problem with CD X4 : when I create a new file, totally empty, and save it, the file size is 2.7 Mo !I deleted all styles (colors, graphics, texts) and the problème is the same.I reinstall the software and the problem is the same.
Odd, and infuriating, problem. PS CS 5.5, Mac OSX 7.3 'Lion'.I was working on three small, not-complex PSD files. Each had been opened, saved, closed, reopened successfully several times.
When loading some .AI artwork to rasterize, Photoshop CS 5.5 got hung up on the open-file dialog box. I got the spinning beachball. Not only did PS stop responding to any input, but the entire Finder did - and eventually even the mouse cursor wouldn't move. I had to force a shutdown and reboot of the Mac.
When I got my system back up and running, I could no longer load those three files. Every time I try to load them, I get this error:'Could not complete your request because the file is empty.'
Acorn, Pixelmator, and Preview also fail to load the files. Preview tells me they're corrupted. Acorn and Pixelmator report unknown errors.Only one of those three fiels was actually open when Photoshop froze. Yet all three files have been affected.Their filesize on disk is non-zero - 70, 105, and 70 KB (small files, I know - 300 x 250 pixels, and again, not complex).
Duplicating the files doesn't work. Copying them to another volume doesn't work. They appear to be completely, permanently destoryed. Their thumbnails render in Finder, but the files refuse to open.Again, the files arenot huge, but they represent half a day's work.
I'm using CorelDraw X4 on a Windows Vista Home Basic System. Trying to "Publish to PDF" produces empty PDF Files, with a page size of 0 mm x 0 mm. The original File has a layout of (German) A4 and a textbox with "Test".
There are no error messages.Even using a PDF Printer (FreePDF XP) doesn't produce a file, but gaves the error message
"%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: -0,15789 ]%%GhostScript Error 1. Error, no PDF file produced! (False)".
For printing or mailing purpose, i used to re-open big .psb layer files (2-6GB) in cs5 and cs6 with keybombo "alt" and "shift" while double clicking the document in the finder window (10.6 + 10.7.5), in order to save time.
This is not possible anymore, everytime i open a document this way its white and empty in photoshop.
I'm a web developer currently slicing an illustrator file for web graphics. Some of the icons and images have shadows, lights, etc, and it's impossible to simply see by a naked eye which pixels contains some shade or nearly transparent color and which doesn't.
It would be extremely useful if I could somehow easily differentiate between empty and non-empty pixels, so I wouldn't miss any when slicing.
When I usually work with corel, I export my files in .png when I finished working so that I can use them in Power Point or whatever. It was never a problem and still works with most of my files, but I have now one file that simply doesn't want to be converted.
I export it like usual (--> export --> .png) but than in the preview it shows me nothing but an empty bar-like part of the file, so basically nothing. The .png file that is created it empty.
Currently have a template setup which we use and when everything is erased, purged, audited etc and the file literally cannot be purged any more the filesize is still 10mb.
There however several hundred items in the "Blocks" section of the purge dialogue box under "View items you cannot purge"..how do you get rid of these?
we have files containing hardly anything which are 20mb and empty files which are 10mb,
The user has Autocad 2014 64 bit Service Pack 1 running over Windows 7 Pro. Everything is working fine until she receives .dwg files from a supplier that uses Autocad 2010. When she opens those files, the screen is empty, no crash/freeze, no error message, just a black background. The other opened files are still there in the background.
The only way she can open the file is by asking a colleague, also running Autocad 2010, to open the file and convert it using the WBLOCK command. After the conversion the Autocad 2014 user can open the file without issues.
I have a drawing that has a filesize of 10meg even when there are no entities in the drawing. There are about 1000 lietypes in the drawing but it wont let me purge them out. These are what are most likely causing the bloat. Some things I have tried without success...
Erase all then purge 3x and audit then purge 3x then audit. Qselect shows no entities in drawing.Save back to acad 2007 and repeat above
I have recently encountered a problem when exporting C3D to V8 dgn. The proxy graphics are set to 1, and I'm using a 3D seed file. Once the file is exported, the dgn file size is no larger than the seed file, and I am being told that the file is completely blank. I've run a recovery, audit - everything I can think of the correct this. I even had a co-worker try and generate a dgn from the same file with the same result.

I got the CAD file 18 MB in size although I do audit, purge, recover, wblock but cannot fix this. The problem was resolved when i created new file in ACAD 2011 and copy all information to.
I mean ACAD 2013 may contain something affect to file size.
I made this two different small project yesterday. Now, opening them and I see nothing in the content area and no time line at all, no assets or symbol shows. It is as a new satring file. I tried opening the html file as well but got the same result. I still can run the html file and see my project but can not open them in Animate and do any modification.
I am on a Mac and installed all the software a few days ago.
Attext output file give a lot of extra empty values when template file include attributes from more than one block.
The drawings I want to extract data from has two blocks with attributes. If I make the template file with attributes from both blocks, I get a lot of extra empty values. If I split the template file in two with the attributes from each block in each template file, the output file is OK.
A copy of the same attributs giving different number of values. (Block REV)
Two template files - 'REV','A','28.03.92','ISOLA','FS','SM','KJ' (Block name + 6 att)
One template file - 'REV','','','','','','','','','','','','A','28.03.92','ISOLA','FS','SM','KJ' (Block name + 17 att.)
How can I get a clean output file giving only the number of values the template file is asking for when the template file has attributes from two blocks? I use ACAD 2010.
