Paint.NET :: How To Create Reusable Shape
Mar 2, 2011I've searched under a bunch of terms (shape, sprite, copy, reusable, etc), but I don't even know what words I should be searching for
I've used Paint Shop Pro 8 for many, many years for my very occasional need to create images for our software manuals. One of the tasks I did frequently was take a screenshot of our software and then add some numbers to it that could be referred to in the text of the manual page, like the blue & white numbers here:
I was able to create those number/circle shapes once as vector images and then easily select and copy them from that file (PaintShop's PSP format) into my screenshot files (jpgs or pngs).
I've been able to create my numbered shapes in one file using Paint.NET, but not as vectors - as I understand it, Paint.net doesn't do vector. I can select and copy those, but doing the selection is very finicky to get the exact circle selected. Then when I paste it into another image, the colors are different - I assume this is due to palette differences.
Granted, I could draw the circle and the number individually into each screenshot I need to edit - this seems pretty inefficient compared to the way I've been doing it for years in PaintShop Pro.

All I can see is to make rectangles and then a thick brush to recolour each one with the mouse which takes ages.
can I not create a shape to outline the entire blue area and just click on different colour palettes to see how they look?

My normal usage of Xara is for banners and posters etc. not art or technical drawing. Anyway, I wanted to create a specific shape in Xara - it's not that I can't create it otherwise (it's very simple to create in CAD and export as PDF - import into Xara), it's that I can't create it in Xara - No matter what I try I cannot create this exact shape. I say exact specifically because I can close to fudge it, that's not the point. How would I go about creating this shape exactly.

I have tried to create a solid / shell with boolean cut-outs, but getting these windows at the right angles is becoming very difficult.So, I tried a CV Surf with an opacity map. This allows for the windows to work well, but there is no depth to the surface.Is there a way to add depth to a CV surf object? Also, I want the map of the interior to be different from the exterior. A solid will have a ton of polygons, making mapping a huge time sink.

Xara :: Create Shape With Partial Outline?
Sep 20, 2011I've been using Xara Photo and Graphic designer for about a week now to design some characters for a game I'm working on and in general find it great to use as a freehand authoring tool.
In order to develop a cartoon style, I'm building my characters out of free hand coloured objects with black outlines with cel shading made from partial masked clones of the objects. This works a treat until I come to put two of the objects together and want to erase part of the outline on the topmost object where it meets the underlying one.
I thought I'd found a solution with a tip on the Xara site (at the top of the page here) where you draw the outline portion you want and combine with a second object then break the objects again. This pretty much achieves what I want, I get a filled object with the outline broken where I originally left it, however, things start to go wrong when you attempt to mask clone a part of the object you've created (for example, to produce a shaded portion of the underlying object) as it's still a line and not a shape, so the mask clone gets confused and doesn't cut out the intended area.
This must be a pretty regular requirement, particularly for people creating flash animations, so I'm sure I must be missing something or going about the construction of the image in the wrong way.

Jan 5, 2013I'm creating a bin model. I've hollowed it out, the thickness of the bin tapers from top to bottom. I have selected the edges at the bottom of the bin and just want to connect these to form a solid shape which can be the base of the bin. At the moment it's hollow all the way through.
When I select these edges, then select 'border' and 'cap', nothing happens. How do I make this selection into a simple circular base?

Jul 5, 2012How to create and use new preset shapes in PSP8.
For example, I opened a large arrow, changed its fill color, and followed the instructions to save it (using File > Export > Preset Shape) with the name My Yellow Arrow.
That appears in the small Presets window: But there's no sign of a big yellow arrow in the drop-down list:
(The program won't let me enlarge that window, or list the entries by name.)
Same with my empty circle, 'MyEmptyCircle#1'.
