Illustrator :: Shortcut To Get To Transform X And Y Value
Jun 3, 2013
When an object for instance is selected with the Selection Tool, is there a keyboard shortcut to get to the Transform X and Y Value etc.? Now I need to click in the X or Y Value boxes, which means grabbing the mouse and so... Can this be done faster?

It seems that in CC the Free Transform tool does not snap to grid when resizing (for example) a rectangle. If I have "Snap to Grid" turned on, it only is taking effect with new objects getting drawn. Am I understanding this correctly? If I draw a rectangle, and want to reshape/resize it to fit the grid, how do I do this? It's a bit embarrassing asking this question, but CC seems to have changed some things from CS6.

I have a .pdf output from a program I use at work. The .pdf can be opened in illustrator (IL) and I have about a bezillion of objects which are mostly all paths (0.5 stroke and no fill of course).
Due to the large number of objects, IL crashes after a while.
Is there a way to transform/join the paths from one row into one object? I tried rasterize, but the problem is that I can't change the color of the according row afterwards - and I need to be able to change the color later.
Stuff I tried that didn't work"
- Object>Paths>clean up
- Object>Paths>simplify

I fail to see the usefulness of this panel. Aren't all these features accessible through modifier keys? How do I get rid of it for good?I'm guessing it's for access on touchscreen-only systems.

I've came across a thought, how to transform a grouped object. like in Photoshop when we use the distort transformation, we can manipulate the corner points for a particular occasion. Here in the example I have 3 rectangles one smaller than another, and I I have grouped them. Now I'm trying to figure out a way how to adjust the shape into the grey one. I have used the free distort tool, but does no justice. because there is no preview so I cannot see how it adjusts. I'm only after the equivalent of the distortion like in Photoshop.

I'm trying to make a 3D cross section of a building in Illustrator CS5 and I've gotten a lot done already, but now I cannot transform the objects in 3D perspective space.
See Attachment: I can draw and position them in perspective, but when I select the "Perspective Selection Tool (red)" and select an object, the handles in the corners / sides are not visible anymore (blue).

I have been working with creating the effect of indented text. I have created a new fill which I placed behind my original one.I then went to "Effec" Transform & Distort" " Transform". I was going to add a vertical move of 1px - BUT it doesn't move vertically? My fill is moving downwards 1px?!
I thought I was going crazy until I zoomed in and applied the same setting again....sure enough it is moving down for veritical and vertically for down.

I have a horizontal bar graphic and I want to make it have the same shape than a circular graphic that I have as background.
What I do first is to rotate the graph (after converting it in an image) to the right angle, depending on where it has to be positioned. After that, I use the Effect->Deform->Arc to make it fit in the same shape as the circular graph. But when I do those processes (in any order) I get a distorted image, with lines not describing concentric lines (not as radius, I mean).
I got the perfect shape working on a MAC, but now I am working on PC. How can I achieve the same?
I attach an image descrbing what I am telling.

I just installed Illustrator CS6 trial. I have been on Illustrator 9 for years. I am used to clicking on the type tool, then clicking on the artboard and typing a single word. I am not using actual text boxes. When I do that in CS6 I cannot get a bounding box to show me how to resize it using the transform tool (arrow tool). I've gone to view>show bounding box, but it does not do anything.

I'd like to know how to ignore the stroke weight of a shape in the transform box. In other terms, to only consider the surface.
For example, I trace a square with no stroke, and measures 100mm. When I add a 1pt stroke on it, I would still like the transform box to display 100mm, and not 100,353 mm.
I'm working on Illustrator CC (64 bit), Windows 7.

I recently started working with Illustrator CS6, and noticed that the Transform option panel in the top tool bar is listed as a word, which i need to click on in order to access the x/y coordinates and the object height and width values. I was wondering if there was a way to set this toolbar so that these options are locked in the tool bar so that i don't need to always click on the word to expand it out. I have included a screenshot of the tool bar as it exists. Also the align options are set up in this way as well.
I also included a screenshot of the same tools in Indesign to give an idea of what i'm looking for, where everything is expanded out.

I am trying to create a pattern that I have created in previous itterations of Illustrator. In CC when I create a triangle (either via Star, Poly, or Pen tool) and then try to rotate it via Transform Each > Transform again, the rotation point moves according to what the bounding box would be if I reset it, rather than staying in one (original) spot relative to the actual bounding box and triangle. I cannot find any settings that would be affecting the rotate point in this way. I am pretty confident that I am using the same procedure now that I did in older versions of Illustrator. Perhaps I am using the wrong procedure.
Naturally, if you are rotating something around its center you should expect that it would end up create a circular pattern. It is more of a square with concave sides. The red is a perfect circle that I grouped to the triangle to demonstrate the rotate points movement. It is located in the exact center according to the align tools.

I am trying to "skew" an object. I use the Free Transform tool, then click and hold on a handle, then hold down Control, and drag the handle where I want it. This works fine. BUT the second I let go of either the mouse or the Control button, it pops back to its original location/shape. How do I make the transformation "stick"? I'm sure I'm being really dense and missing something very simple.

I was wondering if it's possible to do what Effect > Distort & Transform > Transform does from JS. I had a look at the documentation and found nothing in that direction.
The closest thing I found was PageItem.applyEffect(effectXML) looking at the Object Model Viewer in Extend Script Toolkit, but couldn't find documentation for it and I suspect it might have something to do with SVG filters perhaps ?
In conclusion: Is it possible to apply a Transform effect from JS (and if so, how )?How can applyEffect be used ?

What circumstances would cause inconsistent values for Width and Height to be shown in the Info Panel vs the Transform Panelin AI CS6? For instance, I have a vector object selected and the Transform Panel has "80 in" for the width value and the Info Panel shows "96.8654 in". Height is likewise screwy.

resizing objects by changing the width and height values in the Transform window, while keeping the proportions of the object? When I try this in CS6, the proportions of the object gets totally botched.
This is what I do:
1. Draw a straight line that is rotated some 30-40°.
2. Select the line and click in the W: or H: fields in the Transform window.
3. Make sure that the "Constrain Width and Height Proportions" button is selected.
4. Press and hold the up arrow key on the keyboard.
5. Watch how the line is rotated as it is scaled.
I notice that while I'm pressing the up or down keys, the number in the selected width or height field is incremented nicely (21 mm, 22 mm, 23 mm, 24 mm, etc.), but when I release the key, it is adjusted to a seemingly random number (for example 24 mm -> 24.168 mm). If I switch between pressing up and down for some time, the adjustment can be even more random (24 mm -> 58,944 mm).
I recently upgraded from CS3 where this type of scaling worked flawlessly. I'm using a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.7.5.

1. I have a box shape, with a transform effect applied on it that copies the box 5 times horizontally.
2. I want to use these 6 boxes as a clipping mask.
3. How do I:
a) Directly use this object as a clipping mask? Doesn't look like it's possible. When I try it only uses the original single box as the mask. The other 5 boxes disappear.
b) "Break" the box shape object into 6 separate boxes so that they're no longer "phantom copies" but individual objects that I can then group to form a real clipping mask.

It seems as though having this option in the Preferences unchecked is the default. I work with pattern tiles a lot and I ALWAYS want them to scale and move etc... with the object they're applied to. Every time I open an old file (from a previous version of AI where this option was checked) or start a new file, the option is unchecked, and I've really messed up some art when I've edited without realizing my pattern tiles aren't following along.
How do I make this option persistent? I always have to go in and check the damn little box before I can make any edits. BTW, I'm using AI CS6 through the cloud, so I should be all up to date.

Create shape > Transform > Move horizontal or vertical > select number of copies (missing!)
This was one of my favorite tricks but it looks the ability has been removed in CS6! So now if I want to make a sequence of shapes how can I do it?
Adobe fail? or am I missing something?

I'm trying to move specific anchor points on a path a few pixels up from their current position, while keeping everything else where it is, so it'll transform the figure's shape. I'm trying to do it precise by changing it's dimensions, rather than clicking and dragging. does- work when I direct select the points I want and drag them. Problems with that:
1) I have very little control. If I want the point moved up by whole pixels, I pretty much have to get lucky because it's always in decimal points.
2) With shapes bordering each other (parts of a complex shape), if I want to move their location to scrunch something (Half circle in a larger half circle, wanting to flatten out the base), if I lift those points up, they leave a gap. As if the top border of the outer circle has another anchor point under the lower of the one above that, and I can't click on it to move everything while they're still touching. I can take screenshots if needed. I'm following a tutorial to get used to the program.
Alternately, I suppose if you have a shortcut for constraining the drag to whole pixels instead of fractions, that's great too. In Photoshop and the like, holding Shift would give me precision, but that's not the case in this tool or perhaps program.
